Universal Epic Universe brings the thrills in a big way, and coaster fans have a lot to celebrate. From intricate storylines and next-level animatronics to spinning carts, dragon gliders, and racing at crazy high speeds, each roller coaster in Universal Orlando Resort’s newest theme park packs different kinds of fun and excitement.

Whether you’re craving heart-pounding experiences or something more family-friendly, Epic Universe delivers.

Universal Epic Universe Coasters: From Chaotic Carts to Celestial Speed

Ranking the coasters at Epic Universe wasn’t easy—they each bring something unique to the track—but we took on the challenge! If you’re short on time or want to know what to ride first at Epic Universe, here’s how we’d rank this park’s four roller coasters.

#4 | Mine Cart Madness (SUPER NINTENDO WORLD)

Mine-Cart Madness at Universal Epic Universe

Vibe: Chaotic, creative, and full of nostalgia

Looking for a coaster that’s approachable for all ages at Epic Universe? This is a great one to start with.

Mine Cart Madness takes you deep into Donkey Kong Country on a ride full of jumps, surprises, and just the right amount of chaos. The “invisible track” tech makes you feel like you’re leaping across broken rails, and the queue is a nostalgic dream for Nintendo fans. Adorable animatronics and splashy surprises make it a must-ride.

Why It’s Great:

 • Unique jumping track technology
 • Wild, bouncy ride energy
 • Incredibly detailed theming from start to finish
 • Super cool queue!

#3 | Curse of the Werewolf (Dark Universe)

Curse of the Werewolf at Universal Epic Universe

Vibe: Shadowy, spellbound, and unpredictably fun

Don’t underestimate this one. Curse of the Werewolf isn’t the biggest coaster in Epic Universe, but it delivers style, speed, and eerie surprises. The way your car spins changes what you see—so each ride gives you different glimpses of the surrounding Darkmoor village, and of the werewolf lurking in the shadows. That re-rideability, paired with fast turns and atmospheric detail, makes it a standout.

Why It’s Great:

 • Quick launch and unpredictable spins
 • Enchanting theming with a classic creature twist
 • Different views and moments every time you ride

#2 | Hiccup’s Wing Gliders (How to Train Your Dragon – Isle of Berk)

Hiccup's Wing Gliders at Epic Universe's How to Train Your Dragon – Isle of Berk
Hiccup’s Wing Gliders at Universal Epic Universe

Vibe: Joyful, beautiful, and full of heart

Hiccup’s Wing Gliders is a smooth, soaring experience that feels more like flying than coasting.

Set against the sweeping cliffs of Berk, this story coaster delivers an enchanting narrative and richly immersive theming. You’re not just riding a dragon—you’re part of this world. With stunning views, gentle thrills, and happy surprises throughout, it’s fun, easy to enjoy again and again, and one of the most universally loved coasters in the park. This one’s likely to rank highest for those who appreciate the ride without the rush.

Why It’s Great:

 • Smooth and immersive flying sensation
 • Breathtaking views of the land
 • Enchanting, story-driven ride experience
 • Appeals to all ages
 • Easy to ride again—and you’ll want to!

#1 | Stardust Racers (Celestial Park)

Stardust Racers at Universal Epic Universe
Stardust Racers at Universal Epic Universe

Vibe: Celestial, fast, and full of air-time

Stardust Racers isn’t just big—it’s the longest coaster ever built by Universal Orlando Resort and the crown jewel of Epic Universe. With speeds of 62 mph and heights up to 133 feet, it’s easily the most intense ride at Epic Universe and, in our opinion, the best. This dual-track coaster launches you into a high-speed race across the stars, with wild airtime, smooth inversions, and stunning visuals. Each side of the track feels unique, and the night lighting is especially spectacular. It’s fast, thrilling, and unforgettable.

Why It’s Great:

 • Dual-track racing and near-miss moments
 • Massive airtime hills
 • Cosmic visuals and sleek theming
 • Amazing lighting at night

Which Epic Universe Coaster Should You Ride First?

There’s no wrong answer when it comes to the coasters at Universal Epic Universe. Your favorite might depend on your thrill threshold, who you’re riding with, or what kind of experience you want that day.

 • Stardust Racers is perfect for adrenaline chasers and coaster enthusiasts.
 • Hiccup’s Wing Gliders is a go-to for families, first-timers, and anyone who wants a joyful ride.
 • Curse of the Werewolf is great for adventurous children, monster fans, and guests who love a little mystic flair.
 • Mine Cart Madness is fast, bouncy chaos with a heavy dose of nostalgia—ideal for Nintendo lovers.

Whether you’re a thrill-seeker or visiting with kids, there’s a roller coaster in Epic Universe for you. And with each one set in a fully themed realm, the experience goes far beyond just the ride.

When Universal Epic Universe was just concept art and hype, we ranked the rides we were most excited for (check out that blog here). Now we’ve ridden every single one. Some met expectations. Others blew us away!

This list is based on what stood out: the thrills, the storytelling, the ride tech, and those unforgettable moments that had us laughing, screaming, or saying, “We’re doing that again.”

The Ultimate Ride Ranking for Epic Universe

#11 | Fyre Drill (How to Train Your Dragon – Isle of Berk)

Fyre Drill at Universal Epic Universe

Anticipated Ranking: #10

Fyre Drill is beautifully themed and fits right into the playful chaos of Isle of Berk. It’s colorful, interactive, and absolutely made for those sweltering Florida days! This attraction is slow and not actually very competitive, but you will get soaked. A great choice for younger kids or anyone who is looking to cool off.

#10 | Constellation Carousel (Celestial Park)

Anticipated Ranking: #11

Yes, it’s a carousel—but it’s stunning. Especially at night, when Celestial Park lights up around you. The seating is clever and unique, allowing multiple riders per creature, so you can enjoy a romantic ride with someone special or sit close to your little one who might be nervous about riding alone. It also lets parents enjoy the ride with their kids, instead of just standing beside them like on a traditional carousel. Peaceful, nostalgic, and elevated.

#9 | Yoshi’s Adventure (SUPER NINTENDO WORLD)

Anticipated Ranking: #9

Yoshi’s Adventure is exactly what it promises: slow, charming, and full of Mushroom Kingdom whimsy. The queue is adorable, the views from the ride are fun, and the glowing egg hunt adds a bit of interactive magic. For kids and Nintendo enthusiasts, it’s sweet and satisfying.

#8 | Mine-Cart Madness (SUPER NINTENDO WORLD)

Mine-Cart Madness at Universal Epic Universe

Anticipated Ranking: #7

There’s no denying this ride lives up to its name—you’ll feel every bump, jolt, and twist like you’re racing through a Donkey Kong jungle in a rickety mine cart. It’s rougher than it looks and more intense than the height requirement suggests. But the theming is fantastic and the queue is full of playful details. Clever effects, like the “track jump,” make it feel straight out of the game. Donkey Kong fans will love the chaos and character-packed fun.

#7 | Dragon Racer’s Rally (How to Train Your Dragon – Isle of Berk)

Anticipated Ranking: #8

Soaring above Berk with spinning wings is just plain fun. You can control how much you flip, which makes it accessible for both cautious and adventurous riders. It’s a great middle-ground attraction that blends playful fun with just the right touch of excitement. I was a little nervous going in, but it wasn’t as scary as I expected. I actually really enjoyed it!

#6 | Curse of the Werewolf (Dark Universe)

Curse of the Werewolf at Universal Epic Universe

Anticipated Ranking: #4

Short? Yes. But so worth it. This ride is enjoyable, eerie, and even more exciting than I expected. The spinning coaster track gives it a surprising amount of intensity, and the werewolf theming is perfectly creepy without being too scary for most. The free-spinning cars make every ride different, giving it great re-ride value.

#5 | Stardust Racers (Celestial Park)

Stardust Racers

Anticipated Ranking: #3

This coaster means business—fast, sleek, and absolutely bursting with adrenaline-pumping moments. If you’re a coaster enthusiast, prepare to meet your new favorite. The track not only adds drama to the park’s skyline but also delivers a wild mix of maneuvers, from classic inversions to fresh surprises like the Celestial Spin, where you’re face-to-face with the other vehicle mid-ride. It’s intense, no doubt, but totally worth it even if you’re usually hesitant about big coasters; this one’s worth braving at least once.

#4 | Mario Kart: Bowser’s Challenge (SUPER NINTENDO WORLD)

Anticipated Ranking: #6

This ride is all about the theming. Both the queue and ride are packed with incredible physical props and detail. The ride system can take a moment to get the hang of, but once you do, it’s a total blast. It’s not a high-speed attraction, but it’s immersive, interactive, and fun in a way only Mario Kart can pull off. If Nintendo was your childhood, this one’s a dream come true.

#3 | Hiccup’s Wing Gliders (How to Train Your Dragon – Isle of Berk)

Hiccup's Wing Gliders at Epic Universe's How to Train Your Dragon – Isle of Berk

Anticipated Ranking: #5

This story coaster hits the sweet spot—fun and fast with just the right dose of thrill for all kinds of riders. How to Train Your Dragon fans will enjoy spotting Easter eggs and dragon facts throughout the queue, but once you’re on the ride, it’s pure joy. The kind of attraction you finish and immediately say, “Let’s go again.” I think this one surprised me the most. I thought it would be good, but it’s great!

#2 | Harry Potter and the Battle at the Ministry (The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Ministry of Magic)

Harry Potter and the Battle at the Ministry at The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Ministry of Magic

Anticipated Ranking: #2

The queue alone is worth your time—it’s immersive, detailed, and honestly breathtaking. Once the ride starts, the story kicks in fast, and it’s packed with movement, effects, and some truly impressive animatronics. I won’t spoil anything, but several moments drew full-audience gasps from our ride vehicle. You’ll want to experience it again just to catch everything you missed the first time!

#1 | Monsters Unchained: The Frankenstein Experiment (Dark Universe)

Monsters Unchained: The Frankenstein Experiment

Anticipated Ranking: #1

Not to brag, but I called it—this was my most anticipated ride, and it absolutely delivers. The animatronics are massive, detailed, and shockingly lifelike, and the ride strikes a perfect balance between scary, thrilling, and genuinely fun. The story is strong, the vehicle motion is smooth, and there’s even unexpected humor and character depth woven in. It’s dark, exciting, beautiful, and brilliantly designed. Not just the standout at Epic Universe—this is one of the best theme park experiences anywhere.

Universal Epic Universe: Best Rides by Category

 • Best Coaster Thrill: Stardust Racers
 • Most Immersive Storytelling: Monsters Unchained: The Frankenstein Experiment & Harry Potter and the Battle at the Ministry
 • Best Ride for Younger or Hesitant Riders: Yoshi’s Adventure & Constellation Carousel
 • Best Ride to Cool Off on a Hot Day: Fyre Drill

At Epic Universe, theming isn’t just decoration—it’s an experience. Every detail pulls you deeper into breathtaking worlds, with live actors, ambient entertainment, and spontaneous moments making every visit thrillingly unpredictable.

In Celestial Park, wonder takes center stage. Gardens, pathways, and waterways shimmer under more than seven million individually controlled LEDs. Elegant dining and shopping, the massive Helios Grand Hotel, and breathtaking statues at the park’s edges add to the feeling of stepping into a celestial dream.

Epic Universe’s How to Train Your Dragon – Isle of Berk

Isle of Berk has dragons, dragons, and more dragons—peeping out from rooftops and soaring overhead, while massive Viking structures and intricate carvings transport you into a world built for mythical beasts and fearless heroes.

Step into 1920s Paris in The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Ministry of Magic. Tall Parisian buildings line the streets, with cobbled alleys, wrought iron balconies, and hidden magical touches that make the world feel rich, alive, and enchantingly real.

The Burning Blade Tavern at Universal Epic Universe

In Darkmoor, a gothic village cloaked in fog and shadows, empty graves, flickering lanterns, and a crumbling castle turn the streets into a living horror story. The windmill of The Burning Blade Tavern erupts into flames day and night, delivering one of the park’s most jaw-dropping spectacles. Every corner oozes eerie detail—from roving monsters to food that leans into the bizarre (brains, anyone?). With monster-themed makeup and full costuming available, you can even become part of the world yourself.

Step Through Portals and Into Stories

At Epic Universe, you’re not just visiting a theme park—you’re stepping into a living story where laughter echoes through the lands, dragons soar overhead, and magic pulses around every corner. A day at Universal Islands of Adventure is about high-speed roller coasters, magical worlds, and delicious eats—but enjoying the park on a budget is easier than you think! Whether you’re craving a quick snack before braving The Incredible Hulk Coaster or a hearty meal after escaping a raptor encounter on Jurassic World VelociCoaster, the park has plenty of wallet-friendly options.

Croissant Moon Bakery: Affordable Breakfast in Universal Islands of Adventure

Start the day with the Sunrise Breakfast – served daily until 11 a.m. – that won’t break the bank. Choose from two cheese and egg croissants ($8.99): one with ham and one with bacon. Prefer something different? The bakery also offers a ham, egg, and cheese empanada at the same price. For a lighter bite, grab a croissant, danish, or croffle at a slightly lower cost.

Three Broomsticks: Budget-Friendly Dining in The Wizarding World

Three Broomsticks Exterior
Three Broomsticks at Universal Islands of Adventure

No trip to Islands of Adventure is complete without a stop at Three Broomsticks in Hogsmeade. While some signature meals are pricier, you can still find affordable options. The Kid’s Fish & Chips is a smaller portion of the British staple, perfect for a light meal. Priced at $9.49, the Kid’s Fish & Chips includes fish, chips, and a side of grapes.

Fire Eater’s Grill: Quick Bites at Islands of Adventure

Fire Eater’s Grill serves delicious, budget-friendly Mediterranean-inspired options in The Lost Continent. The Traditional Gyro Platter ($13.49) features seasoned meat wrapped in warm pita bread with lettuce, tomato, onion, and tzatziki sauce, served with chips. The Falafel Gyro Platter ($13.49) is a great vegetarian option with the same delicious toppings. If you’re looking for a quick grab-and-go snack, look no further than the Pita with Tzatziki ($4.79).

Green Eggs and Ham Cafe: Fun and Affordable Tots at Islands of Adventure

Over in Seuss Landing, Green Eggs and Ham Cafe offers whimsical and tasty loaded tater tots that satisfy your hunger without stretching your budget. The quick-service restaurant offers six crispy and golden-loaded tater tot dishes, ranging in price and toppings.

A few of my favorites include the Pizza Tots, Buffalo Chicken Tots, and Carnitas Tots – all priced below $12.49. For a plant-based option, Green Eggs and Ham Cafe serves up Vegan Pizza Tots, featuring tater tots topped with plant-based pepperoni, sausage, mozzarella, and parmesan cheese.

Exploring Universal Islands of Adventure on a budget doesn’t mean sacrificing delicious meals. With plenty of affordable dining options, from crispy loaded tater tots to grab-and-go pastries, you can fuel your day without overspending. Stick to these budget-friendly tips and savor the best flavors of the Islands of Adventure while keeping your wallet in check!

Universal Islands of Adventure opened its doors to the world on May 28th, 1999. Within the quarter-century thereafter, it has been an influential force in the theme park industry in both its immersive theming and groundbreaking attractions. Seeing it cross the threshold into its 25th year is something of a proud moment, not just from the perspective of guests and someone who witnessed Islands of Adventure during its infancy but also those of us who have reported on the park since that time. Much like a parent looking back at their child’s accomplishments, it makes one want to open the scrapbook of history and reminisce on some of Islands of Adventure’s former attractions.

Nostalgia hits hard with Islands of Adventure. The park’s rich history and evolution over the years offer more than meets the eye, making it a story worth telling on its own. As we dive deeper, let’s explore the myriad of unique attractions that have called this park home—many of which are still referenced to this day.

Dueling Dragons

Enchanted Oak Tavern and Dueling Dragons at Islands of Adventure’s Merlinwood

Dueling Dragons was an opening attraction at Islands of Adventure and one of the many offerings in Merlinwood. The fan-favorite ride played a major part in the backstory of this specific area of the island and the Enchanted Oak Tavern restaurant located just across from it.

Merlyn, the wizard who protected the realm of Merlinwood, had been deceived by the scheming sorceress, the Lady of the Lake, whose magic waters transformed him into a mystic oak tree, leaving his kingdom unguarded and taking up new residence in the dining location referencing his fate. The warlocks from neighboring kingdoms, Pyrock and Blizzrock, coveted Merlyn’s spell book and immediately jumped on the chance to invade Merlinwood. Unknown to them, the book was cursed, trapping them in the form of dragons. This did little to slow the warlocks’ ambitions and their continued battle destroyed Merlyn’s keep and attracted many knights who would fall trying to slay them. As a result, Merlyn enlisted the help of others who would choose their fate as they mounted the dragons in an attempt to subdue them.

When Dueling Dragons opened in 1997, it gained notoriety for launching its “dueling” trains simultaneously during the majority of its operation. Once The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Hogsmeade opened, Dueling Dragons took on the moniker of Dragon Challenge to tie into the new theming until its permanent closure in 2017. This made way for Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure, which would open in 2019.

Fans of the ride shouldn’t fret, however — as per Universal’s tradition, tributes have been placed in Dragons’ honor. Within Hagrid’s queue, guests will find a “Dueling Club” mural of ice and fire dragons. Over in Jurassic Park, the raptors at the entry arch of Jurassic World VelociCoaster are a nod to the two dragons that once battled on the former attraction. Dueling Dragons even received a dedicated Halloween Horror Nights house in 2023

Island Skipper Tours

Island Skipper Tours at Islands of Adventure

Island Skipper Tours held dual honors as Port of Entry‘s sole attraction and guests’ in-park waterway to Jurassic Park via the Great Inland Sea (that’s the fancy name for Islands of Adventure’s lagoon for those keeping notes.) and consisted of three eclectic-styled boats: The Boatney (which was themed as a re-purposed school bus), the Tropic Trader (which had the appearance of a 19th century sailboat), and Sam Plane (which gave the appearance of a boat made of recycled airplane parts complete with a rotating propeller).

While Island Skipper Tours was an opening-day attraction for Islands of Adventure and certainly served the theme of Port of Entry, it was meant purely as a time-saving convenience for guests. Unfortunately, Island Skipper Tours would be completely phased out by 2003, a mere four years after the park’s opening date, but guests can still find its dock in the Port of Entry to this day.

Pandemonium Cartoon Circus

Toon Lagoon Amphitheater at Islands of Adventure
Toon Lagoon Amphitheater at Islands of Adventure

Toon Lagoon was once home to one of the handful of elaborately themed live shows in Islands of Adventure. Guests could make their way to a 2,000-seat amphitheater where they’d catch Pandemonium Cartoon Circus — a live show that featured all of Toon Lagoon’s comic strip characters in a musical performance under the guise of a circus show hosted by Rocky and Bullwinkle. It featured seven acts and even included music like “The Funny Business” by award-winning composer Andrew Lippa, which also appeared on both the original and special edition versions of the Islands of Adventure soundtrack.

When it opened, Pandemonium Cartoon Circus was one of the park’s family-friendly attractions and was heavily promoted. It even made a feature appearance on the Rosie O’Donnell Show. Sadly, Pandemonium Cartoon Circus only lasted a few months, with its official closing date being February 29, 2000. With that said, while it’s rare, you can still find videos of the show online, and it’s absolutely worth watching.

Mat Hoffman’s Aggro Circus

Following Pandemonium Cartoon Circus’ closure, the Toon Lagoon Amphitheater would be repurposed for a seasonal extreme sports show, Xtreme Xventure from 2000 to 2001. During peak seasons, the stage that once hosted famous comic strip characters like Popeye and Betty Boop now found itself home to skateboarders, inline skaters, and BMX riders doing some pretty nifty stunts for the audience. This would be replaced from 2002 to 2004 by BMX royalty Mat Hoffman’s Crazy Freakin’ Stunt Show and later Mat Hofman’s Aggro Circus from 2010 to 2011.

Both Crazy Freakin’ Stunt Show and Aggro Circus were hosted by Mat Hoffman and operated seasonally. These jaw-dropping entertainment offerings featured extreme sports athletes, with Mat Hoffman’s Aggro Circus utilizing the big top theme, along with appearances by skateboarder Sergie Ventura and inline skater Fabiola da Silva.

Triceratops Encounter

Triceratops Encounter was a walk-through attraction located in Jurassic Park that brought to life a “living, breathing triceratops” through the combined magic of audio-animatronics and a real-life Team Member. Triceratops Encounter featured three animatronic sickly triceratops, each with their own name: Topper, the matriarch and eldest, alongside Chris and Cera. Each had distinct dino-personalities on top of advanced functions such as dilating eyes, sneezing, and coughing.

Triceratops Encounter was especially unique in that it operated under the guise of typical animal encounters found at similar parks. The live team member would act as the host and caregiver to a “sick triceratops” while informing guests about that particular dino’s typical diet and behaviors. Guests were also welcome to pet their new triceratops friends, adding to the realism of the attraction.

While Triceratops Encounter was certainly a fan favorite for park-goers, the attraction experienced on-again-off-again operations. It closed in 2003 and reopened seven years later as a strictly seasonal affair under the name “Triceratops Discovery Trail.” Eventually, Universal retired the triceratops for good in 2012.

While we may have lost a unique attraction, we did get a similar triceratops photo op with the 2021 Jurassic World Tribute Store celebrating the grand opening of Jurassic World VelociCoaster.

Eighth Voyage of Sindbad

The Eighth Voyage of Sindbad at Islands of Adventure
The Eighth Voyage of Sindbad at Islands of Adventure

The Eighth Voyage of Sindbad, one of the original attractions at Islands of Adventure, was situated in the Lost Continent’s Sindbad’s Bazaar. This was a traditional stunt show that followed the vein of Indiana Jones Epic Stunt Spectacular at Disney’s Hollywood Studios and had an approximate 20-minute run time.

The show followed Sindbad and his sidekick, Kabob, as they performed incredible stunts while rescuing Princess Amoura from Merseria, the evil witch, along with her henchmen. The show would have various performances throughout the day, depending on the season, and featured an interactive pre-show by the Mystic Fountain that still entertains guests to this day.

The Mystic Fountain at Universal Islands of Adventure
The Mystic Fountain at Islands of Adventure

The Eighth Voyage of Sindbad was designed to be one of two opening-day shows at Universal’s new theme park, giving guests a spectacle of action, stunts, and even pyrotechnics (the other original show being the aforementioned Pandemonium Cartoon Circus). Although Eighth Voyage had more than enough in terms of action to hold the attention of any audience on paper, its days were numbered especially once The Wizarding World of Harry Potter opened in Islands of Adventure and overtook a good portion of Lost Continent. While there wasn’t any one specific reason given for the closure, there were a few things at play outside of the boy wizard’s arrival.

The Eighth Voyage of Sindbad at Islands of Adventure
The Eighth Voyage of Sindbad at Islands of Adventure

Over the show’s 19-year life, the stunts had only been updated once and were never cheap (especially considering every show would feature a performer professionally catching on fire over and over every day). After holding its final performance on September 15, 2018, Universal has been mum about what will replace the Eighth Voyage of Sindbad, but we trust that whatever does will be well worth the wait.

The post Ultimate Guide to the Top Bars at Universal Orlando Resort appeared first on Orlando Informer.

]]>
While Universal Orlando Resort is undeniably centered around family fun, it harbors a whole other world beyond its kid-friendly attractions. Amidst the family-oriented atmosphere, you’ll find top-notch establishments perfect for a romantic night on the town, a swanky lounge to vibe in, or just some counter space where you can nurse a breather from the parks over a well-crafted cocktail.

With so many great watering hole options at Universal Orlando Resort, what makes a bar “the best”? The drinks are the obvious factor, but it’s more than a quality libation poured by a generous hand. A “good” bar consists of attentive service and a welcoming, well-themed, and entertaining atmosphere alongside a considerable menu. The best bars provide the utmost in all of these accordingly.

Given these demands and some investigation, here is a compilation of our suggestions from the vast array of fantastic options across Universal Orlando Resort. Along with each feature, we’ve also provided a drink recommendation that represents that bar the most.

NBC Sports Grill & Brew

NBC Sports Grill & Brew at Universal CityWalk Orlando
NBC Sports Grill & Brew at Universal CityWalk Orlando

Location: Universal CityWalk Orlando
Drink recommendation: When in Rome Beer Flight

While both parks have fine offerings for beer lovers, this venue is a great choice for someone wanting to enjoy a cold one and have the ultimate game-watching experience. It takes everything you know and love about the standard American sports bar while tremendously amplifying it with classy Edison theming.

The establishment features several high-definition, big-screen televisions playing various sports games, including an outdoor jumbotron, and bars on both the upper and lower floors with a decent amount of seating. Mention what game you’re trying to follow, and there’s the possibility they can seat you accordingly, depending on the table availability. If you have friends and family who aren’t exactly sports fanatics, some tables are even equipped with shuffleboard games to keep non-spectators entertained while everyone else takes in the game day excitement.

The menu has an impressive offering of food and beverage but excels in its beer and cider selections. Its extensive list includes over 100 types of ales, ciders, and lagers, which come in bottled and draft forms. Within their impressive lineup is their exclusive local house brew – the 862. This IPA blends floral, citrus, grapefruit, and pine aromas balanced with a medium-high hop bitterness. Keep an eye out for its ever-changing seasonal version crafted at a local brewery with fresh, Florida farm-grown ingredients of the season.

NBC Sports Grill & Brew also offers several great flight options. Personally, I’d suggest their When in Rome flight, consisting of two of their three exclusive brews, the Firkin beer and the 862 seasonal flavor, as well as Florida’s own Swamp Ape IPA and Key West Sunset Ale.

Antojito’s Authentic Mexican Food

Antojito's Authentic Mexican Food at Universal CityWalk
Antojito’s Authentic Mexican Food at Universal CityWalk

Location: Universal CityWalk Orlando
Drink recommendation: Antorita

Antojito’s theme can be stated as “Traditional Mexican with a modern, urban flare” and is one of the most vibrant venues on property inside and out. Within its festive exterior, it offers two indoor bars on both the upper and lower floors and a quick-service stand outside in the form of a food truck near the entrance for when you want to grab a drink on the go. Within their neon-accented interior are decorations of contemporary art celebrating Mexican culture with highlights of luchadors, colorful graffiti, and other urban-style art. As one of the only venues that offer live entertainment on Universal Orlando property, guests can enjoy the music stylings of a solo guitarist and a mariachi band on select evenings.

Focusing back on the bar itself, the service has always been top-notch during my visits. Their menu is consistent with their theme, offering Mexican beers, different mezcals, and an extensive list of tequilas. In our opinion, The Antorita is the drink that conveys this bar the best. Their namesake margarita is their take on a traditional house margarita that consists of José Cuervo Silver Tradicional tequila, Cointreau, Gran Gala, and garnished with a fresh lime.

If you want something a little less traditional that’s still representative of the bar, I’d also suggest the Blood Orange or my current favorite, The Pineapple Fire and Ice, which comes with a bonus pineapple ice pop! Best of all, their drinks are made from scratch, meaning you can technically customize how you take your beverage.

Strong Water Tavern

Strong Water Tavern at Loews Sapphire Falls Resort
Strong Water Tavern at Loews Sapphire Falls Resort

Location: Loews Sapphire Falls Resort
Drink recommendation: Tavern Grog

If I were to take a stance, Strong Water Tavern should be on anyone’s list of Orlando’s Best Theme Park Bars, and I dare to not-so-humbly call it the best bar on Universal Orlando’s property. Sapphire Falls’ lobby bar has a classy but laid-back vibe with cobblestone and dark wood tones and nautical wall splashings behind the bar’s white marble counter. It’s spacious with plenty of comfortable places to relax that almost beckon you to take a seat and have a drink.

Venturing to their outdoor seating, the patio boasts several choice spots to enjoy a beverage while taking in the serenity of the hotel’s waterfall and lagoon that joins Sapphire Falls with its neighboring hotels. Strong Water Tavern is a rum bar by nature. As such, they have an extensive selection of over 60 types, some of which are barrel-aged right there at the establishment, and a menu of inspired cocktails to choose from, as well as regional Caribbean tapas to pair with your drink of choice.

Of course, I’ve pinpointed their Tavern Grog to be their representative libation. This cocktail utilizes Plantation Original Dark Rum, pimento dram (rum-based liqueur for those taking notes.), demerara sugar, and citrus. The flavors mingle with each other in a subtle but enjoyable fashion, helping this drink define the term “craft” within mixology and showcasing their creative prowess. It’s also likely the best drink on property. It’s so popular that Universal Orlando offers a video tutorial on making the signature beverage at home. Alternatively, they offer expert-guided tastings of their rum selections. The difference with them is you’ll have in-depth education from their Rum Captain on each sampling instead of a simple pairing.

Finnegan’s Bar and Grill

Finnegan's Bar and Grill at Universal Studios Florida
Finnegan’s Bar and Grill at Universal Studios Florida

Location: Universal Studios Florida, New York
Drink recommendation: Finnegan’s G&T

Intricately themed as a traditional Irish pub, Finnegan’s is the go-to in-park bar considered a favorite spot of both Universal Orlando Passholders and guests traveling abroad.

The venue is split in two as Finnegan’s offers full food service and a bar, each having its own entrances. Those just wanting to grab a quality “trip enhancer” need only to hop over to their side before returning to their Universal Studios Florida visit. Finnegan’s Bar & Grill also sits alongside Antojito’s as an establishment where you can often pair live entertainment with a meal or libation.

Naturally, beer and whiskey are featured, but Finnegan’s also offers a full bar bursting with potential for crafting signature drinks. As we delve into the depths of this liquid playground, there are two handcrafted creations we would like to highlight that embody this bar. Sip on Finnegan’s twist on a gin and tonic with their Finnegan’s G&T, crafted with New Amsterdam Gin, Chambord Liqueur, tonic water, and simple syrup, and topped with a fresh sprig of rosemary. But if your taste buds crave the taste of Emerald Isle charm, the Green Tea Clover is calling your name! This elixir offers a melon-infused spin on the traditional Irish Whiskey Sour, comprised of Jameson Irish whiskey, Midori liqueur, peach schnapps, and sour mix.

Bar 17 Bistro

Bar 17 Bistro at Aventura Hotel
Bar 17 Bistro at Aventura Hotel

Location: Aventura Hotel
Drink recommendation: Night on Fire

Aventura’s rooftop bar secures a well-deserved spot among the top-recommended bars at Universal Orlando Resort and is widely considered to be one of the best watering holes in Orlando. Accessing the elevated Bar 17 Bistro is incredibly easy, thanks to a dedicated express elevator that whisks you away to the 17th floor in no time.

Once you’re there, the lounge’s plexiglass surroundings offer a breathtaking panoramic view of the cityscape and three Universal Orlando’s parks. Rest assured, wherever you choose to settle into among their wide array of seats, an awe-inspiring vista awaits. We suggest aligning your visit with dusk as it acts as a wonderful mood setting and is when Orlando is most vibrant.

I’ll admit that researching this article marked my inaugural visit to this bar, and since that first encounter, I’ve been drawn back into its welcoming, laid-back ambiance with a drink in hand. Speaking of drinks – at first glance, there isn’t a concoction that boldly claims the title of this bar’s representative signature drink.

I’d say that the Night on Fire would be the drink of choice here. Bar 17 Bistro’s expert bartenders fill your glass with Absolut Vanilia Vodka, Absolut Citron Vodka, Cointreau, lime juice, simple syrup, and blackberries topped with Fresno pepper. The combined experience with each sip pleasantly compliments Bar 17’s open-air environment with a little added spice. Bonus points are awarded for those who pair it with a view of Krakatau at Volcano Bay.

Honorable Mention: Fat Tuesday

Fat Tuesday at Universal CityWalk
Fat Tuesday at Universal CityWalk

Location: Universal CityWalk Orlando
Drink recommendation: 44 Magnum

This quick-service, walk-up bar may not be unique to Universal Orlando, but its notoriety warrants consideration. They have a consistent line-up of frozen, colorful daiquiris and seasonal flavors, which you can get on their own or swirl together. The guest demand for Fat Tuesday at their upper-level location next to Pat O’ Brien’s has become such that they’ve expanded to a secondary stand on CityWalk’s lower level across from the Universal Studios Store.

Both offer the same speedy, friendly service and selection of frozen drinks, but I gravitate toward their lower-level location. It offers a good amount of seating and prime people-watching opportunities, as well as a great view of the lagoon stage during the nights when CityWalk arranges live entertainment.

If I had to choose what drink defines Fat Tuesday, it’d have to be the 44 Magnum. It’s a mix of their strongest flavors and darn fine to enjoy, especially during that Spring and Summer Florida heat – And don’t be afraid to add in the extra shot!

Universal Orlando’s roller coasters: What are the differences? https://orlandoinformer.com/blog/universal-orlando-roller-coasters-differences/ Thu, 15 Apr 2021 13:45:12 +0000 https://orlandoinformer.com/?p=130195 We break down each of Universal Orlando's six roller coasters, letting you know what to expect in terms of story and thrills.

The post Universal Orlando’s roller coasters: What are the differences? appeared first on Orlando Informer.

]]>
Whether you’re a Ravenclaw-esque enthusiast like myself who heartily ingests any and all ride factoids or someone braving their first time on a roller coaster, it’s good to have some prior knowledge on the subject. Naturally, coasters are something of an artificial species – they come in all different sizes, themes, and classes. One could even say that every theme park doubles as its own “Kingdom Animalia,” of sorts.

This is definitely true at Universal Orlando, which offers a class of roller coaster to pair perfectly with each of its unique guests. And given the soon-to-arrive Jurassic World VelociCoaster, we at Orlando Informer found ourselves inspired to take stock and get to better know the resort’s roster of amazing coaster experiences.

The following is our accounting of each ride. Although we could – and probably would – speak endlessly on this subject, we’ve simplified the descriptions to fast-facts first and a quick excerpt afterwards, which will help provide additional details and information. And for anyone unfamiliar or looking to take that next step in his or her roller-coaster endeavors, we’ve also categorized the list by intensity, to show which attractions you can consider “entry level” to – well, you get the picture.

Entry-level roller coasters at Universal Orlando

Woody Woodpecker’s Nuthouse Coaster

Woody Woodpecker’s Nuthouse Coaster at Universal Studios Florida
 • Location: Woody Woodpecker’s KidZone, Universal Studios Florida
 • Height requirement: 36 inches (supervising companion for those under 48)
 • Max speed: 21.7 mph
 • Approximate duration: 1:00

Woody Woodpecker’s Nuthouse Coaster holds the double honors of being Universal Orlando’s very first roller coaster as well as the attraction that helped officially launch Woody Woodpecker’s KidZone back in 1999. It is, of course, designed for families and has the interest of the younger crowd in mind. This ride favors very vibrant decor and an easy-to-follow story of a wild and entertaining train ride around a literal nut factory with Woody as your “host.”

Despite its wacky name and what you may expect from the titular woodpecker, Nuthouse Coaster’s pace isn’t very fast, and the track stays mostly low to the ground, with just enough tight turns and twists to entertain you. As long as no one in your family is easily scared or squeamish, this would prove to be a fun way to start or end your day.

Flight of the Hippogriff

Flight of the Hippogriff at Islands of Adventure
Flight of the Hippogriff at Islands of Adventure

After originally starting off life as Flight of the Unicorn, this kiddie coaster got swept up in the Harry Potter makeover and was reborn as Flight of the Hippogriff in 2010. The attraction’s new concept revolves around a lesson in riding Buckbeak the hippogriff by Professor Hagrid, who utilizes wicker replicas (aka your ride vehicles). After boarding them and getting settled under the lap bar, guests are encouraged to bow to an animatronic hippogriff, as is customary with these magical creatures.

The overall experience is fun and family friendly, as the ride doesn’t go very fast or feature any inversions. Still, although Flight of the Hippogriff isn’t scary by any means, some guest feedback suggests that the little ones may find it just a wee intense at first, due to how high it climbs and how quickly it reaches its top speed. With that said, however, Hippogriff does offer a great mid-ride look at Hogwarts Castle and at Hagrid’s hut (which can be seen in even greater detail in Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure), which makes it worth a try.

Easy roller coasters at Universal Orlando

Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit

Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit at Universal Studios Florida
Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit at Universal Studios Florida
 • Location: Production Central, Universal Studios Florida
 • Height requirement: 51 inches
 • Max speed: 65 mph
 • Approximate duration: 1:23

Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit boasts a fun, music-centric theme and a great soundtrack for guests to choose from that features an accessible “secret list.” If you get good enough at the selection process, this could allow you to set a different tone for each time you ride.

While this is one of the faster coasters on Universal Orlando Resort property, I always suggest Rockit as anyone’s “first big roller coaster.” Yes, that initial 167-foot vertical lift seems very daunting, but it’s easily the scariest part of this attraction; once you’re over that steep hill, you’re in for a fun, smooth ride. Sure, its top speed is just short of The Incredible Hulk Coaster‘s maximum pace, but you’d never guess it, and Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit doesn’t actually ever go upside-down. This allows for a happy medium of achieving easy thrills while testing the waters of the more intense coaster experiences in the parks.

Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure

The ride vehicles of Hagrid's Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure
Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure at Islands of Adventure

Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure not only challenges you to say its name three times fast, but it also serves as Universal’s first official half-giant step into the realm of “story coasters,” roller coasters which endeavor to tell a narrative during the ride itself (and not just in the queue). Rubeus Hagrid takes center stage as your host, leading you on a field trip deep within the Forbidden Forest to learn more about the Wizarding World’s magical creatures. Guests board cars that are designed after Hagrid’s motorbike, complete with a main seat and sidecar, both of which have lap-bar restraints to keep you safe. True to everything Harry Potter, the queue is highly detailed, and the ride portion boasts some great animatronics that include many fantastic beasts, as well as one of the professor himself.

If Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit looks too intimidating, this would be an excellent alternative as an introductory coaster – not only won’t you find any inversions, but it also isn’t terribly fast or intense. With that said – and without spoiling anything – readers will want to make note of a backwards portion (in which the motorbike “breaks down in mid-air,” as it’s want to do) and a very sudden drop straight down.

Moderate roller coasters at Universal Orlando

Revenge of the Mummy

Revenge of the Mummy at Universal Studios Florida
Revenge of the Mummy at Universal Studios Florida (image: Universal)
 • Location: New York, Universal Studios Florida
 • Height requirement: 48 inches
 • Max speed: 40 mph
 • Approximate duration: 2:57

We at Orlando Informer hold no secrets about our love for this attraction, as we’ve covered it extensively.

Put simply, Revenge of the Mummy takes place behind the scenes of a fictitious sequel to The Mummy, starring a coffee-deprived Brendan Fraser – a production which eventually goes horribly wrong. As you traverse the queue, you’ll notice the scenery blend from a movie shoot to a 1940s Egyptian-tomb excavation, which culminates in a boarding area with lap bar-equipped vehicles that have been designed as mine carts to fit the theme.

It’s certainly not Universal’s fastest coaster, but what it lacks in speed, it makes up for in thrills. If pressured, it’s hard to pinpoint the most intense part of the ride experience, as there are so many; instead, it’s better to say that the only reason Revenge of the Mummy is categorized as “moderate” is due to the ride never going upside-down. If you do choose to venture onto this attraction, there’s a ton of fun and humor you’ll be rewarded with.

Intense roller coasters at Universal Orlando

The Incredible Hulk Coaster

The Incredible Hulk Coaster
The Incredible Hulk Coaster at Islands of Adventure
 • Location: Marvel Super Hero Island, Islands of Adventure
 • Height requirement: 48 inches
 • Max speed: 67 mph
 • Approximate duration: 2:15

The Incredible Hulk Coaster is traditionally a must-do for anyone visiting Universal Orlando. In its current iteration, which debuted in 2016, guests take the role of “experimental test subjects” for General Thaddeus Ross – his latest attempt to take down the menace that is the Hulk. After winding through the military lab, riders board the roller coaster’s sleek, green vehicles, which come equipped with shoulder restraints and seat belts.

After being brought into what’s meant to be the center of a gamma core, passengers are launched into the actual ride experience, accompanied by the Hulk’s roar and the musical stylings of Fall Out Boy’s Patrick Stump. The track involves an exciting flurry of twists and loops, which you smash through nonstop at top speed, making it an immensely thrilling ride and easily the resort’s most intense coaster.

Despite the effects of a lingering pandemic, Universal has done their best to maintain their word to consistently deliver brand-new, world-class attractions at their parks. With the upcoming addition of Jurassic World Velocicoaster, we have a new roller coaster making its nest at the Jurassic Park section of Islands of Adventure. And it’s not just that – with it comes a long-awaited update to align the theme in the Orlando neck of the woods with the cult series’s Jurassic World sub-franchise.

Although this is the only new addition to Universal Orlando Resort that we can expect this year, that doesn’t mean there isn’t plenty for us hens to gab about. It’s a given that what’s sure to be a star ride already has us wild-eyed and nipping at the heel, so what better way to satiate some of our anticipation than to talk about what’s exciting us most?

Hold onto your butts, readers.

1. Jurassic World theming and representation

The cast of Jurassic World will be making an appearance in VelociCoaster

One could state that the first step towards representing Jurassic World began with the popular Raptor Encounter at Islands of Adventure, and I would agree. When it was relocated during VelociCoaster’s construction, the theming that matched the original franchise was retired and updated so the meet-and-greet’s marquee now sports stylings of blue-and-white font on a slate-colored habitat cage – the signature of the Jurassic World sub-series. (And a few years before this, the generic raptor was switched out with the World pack leader herself, Blue.) But as exciting as the minor renovation was, this small taste left fans like myself wanting more, and the powers that be knew they’d have to deliver. Fortunately, just like life, they found a way.

In preparation for the ride, its creators teamed up with the Jurassic World filmmakers to match with the source material down to the finest detail, sparing no expense. We can see this from the attraction’s marquee and housing, what’s visible of the raptor paddock, and the coaster vehicles’ stylings, as well as the surrounding horticulture and signage. Considering what information about the experience has been released, we can not only expect some fun dangers along the way (seriously, we’re racing with fully grown raptors here – have you seen the movies?), but to cross paths with Owen Grady and others from the cinematic hit – the attraction has been given its own original story set within the characters’ world. This provides us with a well-deserved, dino-sized step towards proper Jurassic World representation on the East Coast.

2. The best features of two roller coasters built into one

A beautiful shot of a beautiful hill

Jurassic World VelociCoaster’s tagline, “A new species of coaster,” is a simple and nearly perfect description of what to expect. This attraction is essentially a hybrid of two different types of roller coasters, and one thing’s for sure: there isn’t much like it. During the guests’ journey, they’ll be subjected to two intense launches, with the first racing from zero to 50 miles per hour in three seconds (at the beginning of the ride), and a later boost launching the vehicles from 40 to 70 miles per hour in just 2.4 seconds. They’ll also be subjected to four inversions, multiple zero-gravity stalls that promise a total of 12 seconds’ worth of air time, a one-of-a-kind 360-degree barrel roll, and that already-infamous 155-foot-tall top hat containing an 80-degree, 152-foot drop!

Wow! My heart’s pounding just typing all of that out. The possibility of catching a view of Islands of Adventure from 155 feet above the park’s lagoon already had me sold, but as a fan of thrill rides, I’m psyched to experience the transitions of everything Universal has packed into this “frankencoaster.” Can you imagine how exhilarating it’ll be to catch that much air time and spin that close to the water? I know I’ll do everything in my power to be a part of any soft openings we may be graced with. And if you weren’t already sold, VelociCoaster’s features should most certainly have everyone’s ears perked, at the least.

3. A record-setting attraction

That mammoth drop, in close (and scary!) detail

Universal Orlando’s newest coaster is set to break some records, and not just in the resort’s book – but let’s not jump ahead here.

Focusing solely on Universal itself, VelociCoaster is set to have the steepest coaster drop in either theme park due to the aforementioned top hat’s 80-degree descent. For those crunching the numbers with me, that title is currently held by Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit in Universal Studios Florida. By comparison, the new Jurassic World attraction’s 155-foot peak may not be as high, but it is still 10 degrees steeper than Rockit’s own 90-degree descent. And shifting over to the top-speed category, VelociCoaster’s latter launch reaches the ride’s maximum pace of 70 miles per hour. This feat crowns it as king of this realm and dethrones The Incredible Hulk Coaster, which maxes out at 67 mph.

Jurassic World VelociCoaster’s domination over its peers doesn’t stop there, either. Broadening our scope to the state level, the prehistoric thriller’s maximum velocity will simultaneously make it both the king of top speed at Universal Orlando and the fastest launch-type coaster in all of Florida. Cheetah Hunt in Busch Gardens Tampa Bay has held that reign proudly since 2011, with launches of zero to 30 miles per hour in 1.8 seconds, and a subsequent boost of 38 to 60 mph in two seconds.

4. Night rides and trailblazing possibilities

This will be one hell of an experience at night

While it may seem that everything’s been talked about, there’s arguably still more yet to salivate over.

Guests looking to add some oomph to their ride experience could take VelociCoaster for a spin at night, as you would Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit or The Incredible Hulk Coaster. The aesthetics of the vehicles’ blue lighting already beckon you to do so, and this could potentially enhance your Jurassic enjoyment. Doubling up on the attraction in this way could intensify not only the characteristics of the ride’s track, but any possible raptor encounters, as well. I’ll surely be doing this, as it would make for some truly great memories.

As much as riding this in any fashion should excite you, what has us most hyped is its potential influence on the future. If you’re raising an eyebrow or tilting your head, allow me to elaborate: it’s the industry’s consensus that theme-park history should have its eye on VelociCoaster. This hair-raising adventure into the realm of Jurassic World is set to incorporate some heavy theming into the attraction’s overall experience. Exactly how cohesive the ride portion will be has yet to be seen, but Universal has already successfully dipped its proverbial toes into the deeply themed waters of “story coasters” with Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure and, technically, Revenge of the Mummy. If the past is any indication here, I wouldn’t be surprised to see Universal’s designers use what they’ve learned thus far to revolutionize the industry yet again by weaving an intricate, original tale – similar in depth to attractions such as E.T. Adventure or The Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man – into VelociCoaster’s already-innovative and intense nature.

Even if this doesn’t come to pass, Jurassic World VelociCoaster still gives us a lot to look forward to, and I’m sure it’ll have the Orlando Informer – and Owen Grady – Seal of Approval.
