Milkshakes from Toothsome Chocolate Emporium
Cheers! Toothsome Chocolate Emporium’s legendary milkshakes

What is Toothsome Chocolate Emporium?

The Toothsome Chocolate Emporium & Savory Feast Kitchen is Universal Orlando’s well-executed take on original, themed dining. Don’t let the “chocolate” in the name overwhelm you – while there’s a plethora of cocoa-inspired desserts to choose from, there’s also an expansive menu with options for everybody, including all-day brunch. (Think of The Cheesecake Factory, with a wide range of dishes on top of its namesake dessert specialty.)

Toothsome is composed of three parts. Upon entering, guests can shop through a wide variety of steampunk merchandise, unique Toothsome items, and both freshly made and prepackaged candy. On the opposite side, exquisitely crafted milkshakes and sundaes can be ordered at the bar. And, finally, patrons can proceed into the dining room and select from the full menu of sandwiches, burgers, pasta, formal entrees, desserts, libations, and more (yes, there’s somehow even more – and it’s all incredible).

If you’re lucky, you’ll even have the opportunity to meet Penelope Tibeaux-Tinker Toothsome, the creator of the restaurant, and Jacques, her robot friend. They both occasionally meet-‘n-greet throughout the restaurant.

Where is Toothsome Chocolate Emporium located?

At Universal CityWalk Orlando.

Toothsome Chocolate Emporium – insider tip

You can order most of the milkshakes from the shake bar area of Toothsome Chocolate Emporium, which is located off to the left-hand side of the hostess. There may be a bit of a line, but it’s a quicker way to grab a delicious dessert without waiting for a table!

What’s the story behind Toothsome Chocolate Emporium?

Penelope Toothsome at Toothsome Chocolate Emporium
Penelope Toothsome at Toothsome Chocolate Emporium

Toothsome Chocolate Emporium & Savory Feast Kitchen is the first restaurant at Universal Orlando to have an elaborate backstory with characters that walk around. The narrative centers on the Toothsome family, and you can read it directly from the restaurant below:

Jacques landed the dirigible in front of the small cottage home in London, England. Professor Doctor Penelope Tibeaux-Tinker Toothsome was overjoyed to share her experience and experiments with her family.

She quickly stepped from the cockpit of the airship and dashed up the cobble pathway. She threw open the front door, soaking in her childhood home.

Except… it was empty. All that remained was the old Victrola in the corner of the living room.

Penelope stepped into her mother’s kitchen, recalling the first time she ever tasted chocolate. There was a song in her head. She couldn’t recall the name of it, but it was French and jazzy. There, on the kitchen floor, was a note from her parents.

Dearest Penelope,
We have set out to join you in your adventures. Surely, the world isn’t so big that we can’t find you. We shall look for you wherever chocolate can be found.
Love,
Thomas & Violette Toothsome

Penelope knew immediately what she had to do. She would take everything she knew about chocolate and develop a fully industrialized, state-of-the-art chocolate emporium! Until the day she was reunited with her family, she would share her love and knowledge of chocolate with the world!

With the old Victrola in her arms, Penelope made her way back to the dirigible. Jacques quickly lifted them into the air. They were off to chase their destiny and find the perfect location for the world’s foremost chocolate emporium. There would still be discoveries to be made, but she was determined to make them all.

What are the character interactions like at Toothsome Chocolate Emporium?

While the interactions with Penelope and Jacques aren’t the main event of this restaurant (as with many character dining experiences), their presence is a great supplement to the fantastic food found at Toothsome. If you catch them hanging around during your meal, they’ll more than likely stop by your table for a chat about their latest inventions – oh, and chocolate, of course. (Spoiler alert: robot Jacques will melt your heart with his adorable beep-boop robot language.)

As you’ll see in the photo gallery below, Toothsome Chocolate Emporium & Savory Feast Kitchen has a very distinct aesthetic. The towering smokestacks that adorn the building’s exterior create one of the best views you’ll find in CityWalk, and there are plenty of detailed trinkets to captivate you throughout the venue. With tons of copper and black detailing, the steampunk vibes will immerse you from the moment you step foot inside.

What was Toothsome Chocolate Emporium’s opening date?

Food allergies, Celiac, Vegetarian?? This place has you covered!

Initially, we came to Toothsome at City Walk, thinking we would get desserts... But, when we opened the menu, we all decided the entrees looked so great that we would order lighter dinners and then get dessert. Our server, Jenn from PA (also a trainer) was amazing! My friend has celiac, her husband doesn't eat anything with onion (even a hint of onion), and I am vegetarian, so we has a few food restrictions. She was super knowledgeable about the menu, each item's ingredients, and also had Chef Frankie come to the table to ensure all of the details of each item we were interested in was fully understood. She created extra "allergy" tickets to attach to the order in the kitchen so the cooks knew to change their gloves, and use the fryer that was for non meat/gluten free food items, etc. SUPER PROFESSIONAL and CARING in this regard. As a vegetarian for 10 years, I have never had a server/chef team ever review the details of the menu items in such details as to ensure a comfortable and confident dining experience.

As far as the food itself, it was delishe! Keep in mind, I did not eat any of the meat/chicken/fish items, but the table's feedback was excellent for everything. We started out with roasted brussel sprouts (veg and gluten free); pork belly sliders (made with gluten free bun); truffle oil, parmasean fries (made w GF fries, veg).

Entrees included: fettuccini alfredo with chicken, teriyaki salmon with rice and veggies; braised short ribs over grits; waldorf salad (modified with a gluten free dressing and no walnuts); avacado toast (veg); steamed broccoli with grated cheese (veg).

For dessert, the GF options included chocolate or peanut butter ice cream with chocolate sauce and sprinkles, or a couple of plated desserts, including a flourless chocolate cake and flan or creme brulee? My friend had peanut butter ice cream with chocolate sauce and sprinkle and was so happy! The rest of the table shared a giant brownie brittle sundae - giant wedges of thick, ewwy gooey brownie, topped with a couple of scoops of chocolate ice cream, chocolate whipped cream, chocolate sauce, a piece of brownie brittle (more like a thin brownie); and chocolate sprinkles. My only suggestion on the brownie dessert would be regular whipped cream, and maybe mini chocolate chips in lieu of sprinkles. I would also LOVE to see hot fudge, but as explained by Jenn, with the volume of desserts they do, and the temp they need to keep hot fudge at, it isn't possible logistically to do. I do feel like the sundae needed a bit more texture or crunch, but otherwise, outstanding with enough for 5 people to have a few spoons and feel very satisfied (with a bit left over!).

Just wanted to convey our thanks and appreciation to the management and staff at Toothsome for making this dining experience 5-stars!! The mere fact that the staff was so caring about our dietary needs and requests went such a long way!! Although most places do have GF and Veg "options" they can be limited, and the staff are not always well versed in the menu item ingredients and have to "go in the back to ask the chef"... They sometimes even seem annoyed by us asking several questions (defensive, like you are trying to make their job more difficult); Yet the Toothsome staff was the 100% opposite - kudos for showing us what "hospitality" should be. You have set the bar very high for your neighboring restaurants on City Walk! Thank you again!

Great vacation dinner
Date Of Last Visit: Feb. 24, 2017

Fun, inventive food. good choices for all tastes. We recommend getting lots of apps to share. Desserts are amazing and over the top. Prices quite reasonable for a resort. Atmosphere is fun but not overly noisy.

MUST COME!
Date Of Last Visit: 3/18/17

I had the bacon milkshake, shrimp and lump crab mac & cheese and the chocolate mousse...
My eyes were bigger than my stomach!
However, I just couldn't stop eating...Everything was just so good!

There is only one criticism...This restaurant has been popular since it's opening so be prepared to wait. Not sure if there is a time that it's NOT super busy. Might be during the school week????

Otherwise this place is AMAZING! Highly recommend it!

All we got was water
Date Of Last Visit: 04/17/2027

Zero would be my rating but it doesn't allow that as an option. Arrived at Orlando Florida location at 16:13PM, were seated within two minutes, ordered water to start. Asked the server what she recommended on the menu. She made a suggestion and stated "I'm not going to be your server, but I'm going to get your drinks started", came back with the drinks and took our order and said that she was putting them right in. Waiting, waiting, waiting... 16:47PM another server comes over to say that she was taking over. We overheard a hostess tell her that she had a gen party table on the way and she was excited. All the while another server in the same area had seated and taken care of two other tables that had three in the party like ours. It wasn't busy when we sat. We asked for tha.e manager when the server came back over 16:59PM. A female manager came over to the table with the server and stated "the server said that you have been waiting long and I'll go check on your order". When the manager walked away the server quickly approached stating "it's not my fault but your food is coming". A few minutes later a male manager came over to apologize but an hour and some minutes later the damage had already been done.

Fabulous Milkshake
Date Of Last Visit: 10/22/2016

I had the risotto and a 5x chocolate milkshake. The milkshake was so tasty and rich, definitely to be shared! The risotto was ok to. It had some breadcrumbs or something on top that I wasn't crazy about, but I just moved it away and it was good!
