Celebrate the Holidays at Universal Orlando – 2022 Insider’s Guide

Holidays 2022 at Universal Orlando

The 2022 holiday season is here, and Universal invites guests to unwrap the awesome and let loose this holiday season during its Holidays celebration at Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure. 2022’s festivities run from Saturday, November 12, 2022 to Sunday, January 1, 2023, which puts them on par with the past few years’.

Let’s explore all of the joy that’s to be found at Universal Orlando Resort this holiday season. We’ll start with this overview page, covering the proceedings at Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure and everything going on at Universal’s various hotels. Then we provide three additional pages with even greater detail about Universal’s Holiday Parade Featuring Macy’s, the Grinchmas Who-liday Spectacular, and Christmas in The Wizarding World of Harry Potter.

How does Universal Studios Florida celebrate the holidays?

A good – and merry – number of Universal’s Holidays celebrations can be found right at Universal Studios Florida. Two principal pieces to the Holidays at Universal Studios Florida are the Universal’s Holiday Parade Featuring Macy’s and Christmas in The Wizarding World of Harry Potter.

Universal’s Holiday Parade Featuring Macy’s

Universal’s Holiday Parade Featuring Macy’s

The big event at Universal Studios Florida (well, outside of the Wizarding World, at least) is Universal’s Holiday Parade Featuring Macy’s. Guests can watch some of their all-time favorite characters in a larger-than-life manner through this parade. Characters from Despicable Me, Shrek, and Madagascar will all be featured, in addition to Santa himself!

In the 2021 holiday season, the parade’s various floats were arranged into a wintry walk-through experience, replete with their accompanying balloons from the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. The man of the hour himself, Santa Claus, was still present, taking socially distanced photos with guests. He promises to return in 2022.

Universal’s Holiday Character Celebration

Most of the characters from the traditional Holiday Parade – which includes the casts of the MinionsShrek, and Madagascar film franchises – arrive on floats to sing and dance for (and take more long-distanced selfies with) their throngs of adoring Christmas fans.

Mannheim Steamroller holiday concerts

Guests can attend Mannheim Steamroller concerts on December 3, 4, 10 and 11 in the evening. These concerts are included in daytime ticket admission.

2021 Holiday Tribute Store at Universal Studios Florida

Additional details for 2022 have not been announced just yet, however you can find information on Universal Studio Florida’s 2021 festivities below.

Holiday Tribute Store

It’s back, and better than ever! The Tribute Store was originally created for Halloween Horror Nights in 2015, collecting together in one spot some of that year’s various intellectual properties and pieces of merch, and was then exported to Mardi Gras, doing much the same work. That formula has been repeated once more for Christmas, with Tribute consisting of four themed rooms: Santa’s workshop, Earl the Squirrel, How the Grinch Stole Christmas, and The Wizarding World of Harry Potter.

A small foyer welcomes you to the Tribute Store. This year, details show that this space is likely Santa’s Workshop – a cluttered desk with notes (scorekeeping Reindeer Games and tracking reindeer exercise) and reindeer food lies under a map of the world. Santa’s Workshop has doors that lead straight to the Reindeer Stables, which makes sense considering his occupation.

The first room of the Tribute Store pulls you inside Santa’s Workshop. Here, you can see all the work Santa and his elves have been doing. The perimeter of the room is decorated with details that would charm any fan of Universal Studios Florida, including a moving Locomotive 131 pushing the DeLorean back to the future. Cans of paint, wood chips, and even candy wrappers litter the nooks and crannies of this room, but there’s plenty of toys and items lining the shelves to pick up something for the good boys and girls in your life. Need a reference to see if someone’s deserving of a gift? Go to the back of the room to see Santa’s chair and review his Naughty and Nice list.

The second room in the Holiday Tribute Store is dedicated to Universal’s holiday mascot — Earl the Squirrel. Earl has gained rapid popularity over the past couple years, even getting his own room in the inaugural Holiday Tribute Store (just last year). This year, Earl returns with his Christmas Curios Museum & Emporium. A few items are recycled or repurposed from last year, but of course we can’t blame Earl for squirreling some things away to reuse. In a departure from recent Tribute Stores, this is the room you want to go to to pick up your sweets. There’s a good selection for you to choose from:

  • Fudge, Assorted Flavors – $12.00
  • Christmas Tree Cupcake – $6.00
  • White Christmas Cupcake – $6.00
  • Acorn Gingerbread Cookie – $6.00
  • Squirrel Gingerbread Cookie – $6.00
  • Gingerbread Cookie Sandwich – $7.00
  • Whoopie Pie – $4.50
  • Earl’s Jar Cake, Red Velvet – $12.00
  • Earl’s Jar Cake, Chocolate Cake – $12.00
  • Holiday Trifle Cake – $10.00
  • Mousse Mugs – $10.00
  • Yule Log Brownie – $10.00
  • Christmas Tree Brownie – $8.00
  • Mini Globe Cheesecakes – $8.00
  • Santa’s Boot Cake – $10.00
  • Holiday Cocoa Bombs – $10.00
  • Holiday Cookie Dough Balls – $4.50
  • Jumbo Macarons – $5.00
  • Earl’s Apple – $12.00
  • Ornament Apple – $12.00
  • Fresh Roasted Nuts – one bag $6.00, three bags for $15

This room also has a cooler packed with a selection of Coca-Cola products and water. After you’ve picked up your sweet treats, you’ll carry on through your tour of the Tribute Store and check out later.

Even though it’s the Grinch himself who taught us that maybe Christmas doesn’t come from a store, we are glad that he can be found in the Tribute Store. The third room is a recreation of the Grinch’s lair on Mount Crumpit, just north of Whoville. From stalactites and ratty fabric hanging from the ceiling to the soundtrack playing in the background, you really feel like you’ve stepped into the Grinch’s house. The most impressive feature of this room, in our opinion, is the life-sized Grinch sled. From the looks of things, he’s already taken presents, snoof, and the fuzzles from the residents of Whoville — he’s probably even taken the Roast Beast!

As far as merchandise in this room is concerned, you can find anything Grinch-related here (of course) as well as a healthy assortment of Dr. Seuss selections and general holiday knick-knacks and accessories. Light-up necklaces, holiday-themed earrings, and adorable pins all line the shelves of this room.

The finale to this year’s Tribute Store is a truly beautiful space. Taking a chapter (literally) out of the fourth installation of the Harry Potter franchise, the fourth room immerses guests into the night of the Yule Ball at Hogwarts Castle. Fans will remember that the Yule Ball is, first and foremost, a dance hosted by Hogwarts during the Triwizard Tournament to promote international Magical cooperation. Just as the Yule Ball was, this room carries a white and blue motif and is decorated with a number of beautiful white Christmas trees and icicles. The Great Hall is almost unrecognizable, and even though you won’t be dancing like a Hippogriff (although maybe you’ll want to), you can shop to your heart’s content for all the witches, wizards, and squibs in your life. As you exit the Tribute Store, listen closely for a final Easter egg courtesy of The Weird Sisters.

Additional holiday celebrations at Universal Studios Florida

A Diamond Bella Dancer in her holiday costume

The Blues Brothers Holiday Show

Jake and Elwood perform festive favorites like “Santa Claus Is Coming to Town,” “Blue Christmas,” and more with snow on Delancey Street at the end of each show. The holiday edition of the Blues Brothers street party is a fan-favorite and should not be missed – even folks not familiar with the band/film will surely love this one!

Marilyn & the (Holiday) Diamond Bellas

In 2016, Universal debuted the Marilyn Monroe and the Diamond Bellas street show; the following year, the company decided to cast the fun little production in a Christmas light.

Although the same basic premise – Ms. Monroe and her girls arrive to “film” a musical routine for an upcoming picture – the yuletide-flavored version exchanges the USO bent of the original with (you guessed it) a holiday overlay. The Diamond Bella Dancers now have beautiful Santa-esque costumes that look stunning all in silver, and the second song has been replaced with the time-period-appropriate “Santa Baby.”

We highly recommend sticking around for the show if you manage to catch it while strolling through the park, as it’ll help put a holiday-tinged smile on your face for the rest of the day.

How does Islands of Adventure celebrate the holidays?

Islands of Adventure isn’t outdone by its theme-park sibling next door – here you can (normally) find some of the most fun Christmas activities and events at all of Universal Orlando.

Grinchmas at Seuss Landing

Grinchmas at Seuss Landing in Islands of Adventure

As you likely know, Islands of Adventure has a whole island dedicated to Dr. Seuss, the classic children’s author: Seuss Landing! When the holiday season hits full swing, Universal transforms this area into the whimsical world of Grinchmas (think warm fuzzies with a side of snark).

Seemingly every nook and cranny of this wintry wonderland are filled with yuletide decorations and a whole cast of Who-ville residents who happily interact either among themselves or with guests. The Grinch himself even makes appearances, begrudgingly allowing guests to take photos with him.

Grinchmas Who-liday Spectacular

At Grinchmas at Islands of Adventure, the popular Dr. Seuss book “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” is brought to life in the heartwarming live stage show, “Grinchmas Wholiday Spectacular,” starring The Grinch and the Whos from Whoville. Grinchmas is part of Universal Orlando Resort’s Holidays celebration and features live entertainment that the whole family can enjoy.

This stage-production retelling of The Grinch Who Stole Christmas was suspended last year. But now it returns in its entirety, featuring live song, dance, and humor that brings a fresh take on the classic story.

If you would still like to get more information on this usual highlight of Universal’s Holidays, you can visit our dedicated page to the Grinchmas Who-liday Spectacular.

The Grinch & Friends Character Breakfast

The Grinch at Universal’s Islands of Adventure.
The Grinch at Universal’s Islands of Adventure

This dining experience offers the opportunity to dine on delicious breakfast items while in the company of Whos and the one and only Grinch. Once again, due to COVID-19, The Grinch & Friends Character Breakfast was cancelled in 2020. We will keep you posted on whether or not this experience returns!

What is Christmas in The Wizarding World of Harry Potter?

Christmas decorations in The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Hogsmeade

Due to popular demand, Universal offers a full-blown Christmas party at The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – at both Hogsmeade in Islands of Adventure and Diagon Alley in Universal Studios Florida.

In addition to both lands being decked to the hilt with decorations, garlands, and Christmas lights, you can also experience exclusive food and entertainment (including holiday songs by the Frog Choir and Celestina Warbeck). The star of the holidays at The Wizarding World of Harry Potter is The Magic of Christmas at Hogwarts Castle, the projection-mapping show that is a festive version of The Nighttime Lights at Hogwarts Castle.

Just like Universal’s Holiday Parade or Grinchmas, the wizarding Christmas celebration is included in general theme-park admission.

Get detailed, in-depth information on everything wizarding-yuletide-related in our dedicated page to Christmas in The Wizarding World of Harry Potter.

What are the exclusive food and drinks at Universal during the holidays?

Mistletoe Pines Village, CityWalk

New this year is Mistletoe Pines Village, a themed pathway within CityWalk that is stocked with seasonal delights. Here, you can grab artistic confections, mouth-watering beverages, and even custom art. Usually, the Tribute Store is overflowing (sometimes literally) with treats and the people trying to get to them. While the Tribute Store still has a selection of sweets for guests, Mistletoe Pines Village takes some of the edge off and invites guests to take advantage of the space in CityWalk to enjoy desserts and delicious drinks in this lagoon-side respite.

How do I meet Santa Claus at Universal Orlando?

Universal's Holiday Experience Featuring Macy's Balloons
Universal’s Holiday Experience Featuring Macy’s Balloons

Many guests ask the question, “Where can we meet Santa at Universal Orlando?” Guests last year could briefly interact (socially distanced) with Santa last year for a photo op in the Holiday Experience Featuring Macy’s Balloons. This year, however, the only place to see Santa is on his float on the Universal’s Holiday Parade featuring Macy’s.

What’s the exclusive merchandise at Universal during the holidays?

Earl the Squirrel at Universal Orlando Resort

Universal has long released exclusive merchandise as part of its yuletide celebrations, but it really started to up the ante in this regard over the last few years, especially when Christmas in The Wizarding World of Harry Potter was ushered in. This year, Earl the Squirrel has been the first to take over the aisles at Universal Orlando Resort.

Here’s what guests can purchase in the Universal Legacy Store in CityWalk:

  • Earl the Squirrel Blanket – $60.00
  • Earl the Squirrel Adult Hoodie – $60.00
  • Earl the Squirrel Wood Ornament – $12.00
  • Earl the Squirrel Drawstring Backpack – $30.00
  • Earl the Squirrel Gift Label Stickers – $8.00
  • Earl the Squirrel Balsam & Pine Scented Candle – $20.00
  • Earl the Squirrel Holiday Mug – $15.00
  • Earl the Squirrel Youth Holiday Long-sleeve – $28.00

Beyond these items, guests can find holiday merchandise across the resort. The best place to shop for these items is the Holiday Tribute Store. Each room is full of seasonal items and holiday accessories that will complete any visit to Universal Orlando Resort during the holidays. Unique to the Tribute Store are the wax figurines you can collect. The Christmas Tree in the Mt. Crumpit Sanitation Department room and The Reindeer in Earl’s Christmas Curios Museum & Emporium are both $6.00. The Yule Ball room has a beautiful collection of Hogwarts house items and a curated collection of holiday-fitting Wizarding World of Harry Potter merchandise.

Care to see what else is usually on hand? Here’s a look at what we’ve found over the past few years:

What are the Holidays premium add-ons at Universal Orlando?

Holiday Tree Hunt

A holiday tree located in Spongebob Storepants

Introduced in 2019 (and spawning a scarecrow spinoff for Halloween this year), the Holiday Tree Hunt will return again in 2021.

The basic premise remained the same: find the Christmas trees (some in Universal Studios Florida, some in Islands of Adventure, and a couple in CityWalk), collect the stamps that are located next to each, and then work your way to one of three shops (Park Plaza Holiday Shop in USF, Port of Entry Christmas Shoppe in IOA, or Universal Studios Store in CW) to receive a “festive holiday gift”: a special tree ornament. The twist comes in the fact that the stampable “treasure map” – and, thus, the holiday prize at the end – has to be purchased for $9.95.

Just seeing the Christmas trees really is worth the effort, whether you opt to buy the corresponding brochure or not – each is beautiful and brilliantly themed, whether that be to the Marvel superheroes, Jurassic Park, or The Toothsome Chocolate Emporium & Savory Feast Kitchen‘s steampunk milieu.

What about the parks and Universal CityWalk?

The restaurants at the parks and Universal CityWalk offer an incredible variety of wonderful food, but they don’t typically have buffets or special events for Christmas, even when there isn’t a pandemic going on. Instead, they tend to offer a few holiday-themed items in addition to their regular menus. To learn what they may be offering this year (and to possibly book a table), visit our dining reservations page for contact information.

This wraps up our overview of the 2021 holiday festivities at Universal Orlando. Be sure to check out the navigation links below to continue planning your visit.
