On May 22nd, 2025, the gateway to Epic Universe officially opened to the world. Universal Orlando Resort’s latest property is, well, a universe of its own. This new theme park consists of five captivating worlds, each with groundbreaking, innovative attractions that guests can visit.

Among these realms, visitors can be transported to the Mushroom Kingdom in SUPER NINTENDO WORLD, where they can meet Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach, and Donkey Kong. They’ll also be able to come face to face with their favorite Vikings and flying creatures from the How to Train Your Dragon franchise, like Hiccup and Toothless, inside How to Train Your Dragon – Isle of Berk. Epic Universe even has its own Wizarding World of Harry Potter, where the park’s travelers will be whisked away to 1920s Paris from the Fantastic Beasts films and step inside the Ministry itself at The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – The Ministry of Magic.

Upon approaching Epic Universe, guests are first greeted by a gateway connected to a massive, emerald tower containing icons representing each of the worlds they can visit during their day. As this tower welcomes everyone to Celestial Park, the world between worlds, and what will surely be an unforgettable adventure, one can’t help but wonder what exactly is this machine of cosmic majestry?

That, dear readers, is the Chronos.

Who created the Chronos?

Epic Universe’s Chronos at Night

As we know, Celestial Park is the central hub of Epic Universe. According to lore, one of the curious visitors to this realm was Vincent Various, a legendary explorer who came upon Celestial Park. When he first arrived, he learned about the Celestians and that they used comets as their transportation between worlds. However, the problem with comets is how unpredictable they can be. So, Vincent crafted a solution — portals.

Of course, portal transportation would be convenient and instantaneous, as all one needs to do is take a single step, and they’re immersed in an entirely different place. However, maintaining these portals would require a large amount of energy. It was then that Various realized that the only way to power these portals would be to harness the energies within the Chronos tower. From there, the Celestians, residents of Celestial Park, would assist in maintaining the power of the Chronos.

The connection between the Chronos tower and Epic Universe

Epic Universe's Chronos at Night
Epic Universe’s Chronos at Night

The visual and symbolic anchor of Epic Universe powers not only these various portals but also Celestial Park itself. Each of the establishments of the world within worlds is fueled by the energies Vincent harnessed. This includes not just shops like Vincent Various’s own Sensorium Emporium, but also Celestial Park’s amazing restaurants like The Atlantic and the out-of-this-world fare of Pizza Moon; as well as the park’s own attractions like Constellation Carousel.

While the true origins of the Chronos tower itself are unclear, one can’t help but wonder if there’s more to Vincent Various’s story and his connection to the Chronos. Could he be the very creator of this awe-inspiring structure? Would this mean that he’s more than just a mere explorer?

With Epic Universe only in its infant years, surely more will be revealed about Various, the Celestians, and the Chronos.

When I first visited Universal Orlando Resort, I missed out on so many opportunities that could have made my trip much smoother and more enjoyable. Now, as a seasoned park-goer, I’ve learned the ins and outs of navigating the parks like a pro. Whether it’s saving time, maximizing perks, or planning smarter, these Universal Orlando Resort tips will help you make the most of your visit!

Packing Tips for Universal Orlando Resort

One thing I’ve learned from frequent visits to Universal Orlando Resort is that anything can happen. It’s always better to pack a little heavier and be prepared than to go light and end up in an inconvenient situation. Sure, the obvious essentials like your phone, wallet, keys, and tickets are no-brainers—but what about the less obvious must-haves?

One item I never leave behind is a portable charging port. With phones and other devices draining fast from keeping up with attraction wait times and snapping countless memory-making photos, it’s a lifesaver.

Other essentials, like ponchos and an extra pair of socks, are handy for those fun water rides or if you run into a quick afternoon rain shower. A refillable water bottle is another must-have to help keep you hydrated and prevent you from having to purchase multiple water bottles throughout the day. And don’t forget sunscreen to protect yourself from the intense Florida sun!

Maximizing Universal Orlando Resort Hotel Benefits

Luggage Services at Universal Aventura Hotel

Staying at a Universal Orlando Resort hotel offers more than just proximity to the parks—it’s packed with perks, including one I wish I had used on my first trip: luggage services. If you arrive early in the morning before your room is ready or need to check out but have a late flight, you do not have to drag your bags around all day. Each Universal Orlando Resort hotel has luggage services that will hold your belongings until you are ready to pick them up or check-in. This means you can enjoy the parks to the fullest, even on your arrival or departure day!

Water Taxi at Loews Sapphire Falls Resort
Water Taxi at Loews Sapphire Falls Resort

Universal Orlando Resort hotel properties also offer their own convenient transportation options and walking trails to the parks. The water taxis and walking trails even have separate security checkpoints, providing a quicker security experience compared to the main security lines.

These hotels typically include Early Park Admission to at least one of their theme parks, though this is subject to change. Be sure to check which parks offer this perk on the days of your visit. This benefit gives hotel guests exclusive first access to some of the most popular attractions before the general crowds arrive!

Using the Universal Orlando Resort App

The Universal Orlando Resort app is one of the best tools for making your day easier. With this app, you can check wait times for all attractions, view show schedules and meet-and-greet times, browse restaurant menus, and access much more. Be sure to check it periodically to help you plan the perfect experience!

Tips for the Best Times to Eat at Universal Orlando Resort

There truly is a strategy to timing your meals at Universal Orlando Resort. Restaurants and quick-service locations tend to fill up quickly during peak dining hours—between 11:30 AM and 1:30 PM for lunch and 5:30 PM and 7:30 PM for dinner. To avoid long lines, it’s best to plan your meals outside these times.

If you’d rather enjoy a full-service meal during these busy times, I highly suggest making a reservation whenever possible to ensure your party is accommodated. However, if your schedule is flexible, dining during off-peak hours can make for a much smoother and more enjoyable experience.

Best Times to Ride

Timing is also crucial when planning out your attractions at Universal Orlando Resort. On my first visit, I rushed straight to the most popular rides in the morning or jumped in line right before the park closed, only to find that many others had the same idea. Now, I’ve learned that some of the best times to jump in these queues are actually midday to around two hours before the park closes. This strategy helps you avoid the early morning or last-minute rush.

Now in its 33rd year of terrifying the masses, Halloween Horror Nights has built a reputation for immersing guests in some of the most anxiety-inducing moments in horror history. A key part of this success comes from partnering with top production companies to bring these nightmares to life—none more prominent than Blumhouse Productions. Since 2014, Jason Blum’s legendary horror franchises have become a staple at Halloween Horror Nights, terrifying and delighting fans year after year.

With such a strong presence at Halloween Horror Nights and three Blumhouse entries for 2024 (Insidious: The Further, Enter the Blumhouse, and this year’s Dead Coconut Club featuring Blumhouse), it’s the perfect time to explore the deep ties between HHN and Blumhouse Productions. Specifically, we’ll be focusing on the in-park use of Blumhouse properties, including haunted houses, scare zones, and roaming characters. While Blumhouse has also been featured in media events, Blumfest at Universal Orlando Resort, and even the popular Scare-Actor Dining experience, those are more HHN-adjacent rather than part of the main event itself.

Now, without further ado, enter the fog of history with us as we begin our journey in 2014.

The Purge: Anarchy (2014)

The Purge: Anarchy at Halloween Horror Nights 2014
The Purge: Anarchy at Halloween Horror Nights 2014

After signing a 10-year first-look deal with Universal Pictures, Blumhouse Productions made its first Orlando appearance at Halloween Horror Nights 24 with The Purge: Anarchy. Based on the first two Purge movies, the scare zone was located in the New York section of Universal Studios Florida. The areas unique story placed guests in the midst of this year’s Purge, where the Old Elegant Woman and Big Daddy would capture and auction off victims as part of the national festivities.

This was the first, but certainly not the last, time we’d see one of Blumhouse’s most beloved franchises at HHN. The success of The Purge: Anarchy was likely due in part to the integration of plain-clothes victims and facade televisions displaying “live feeds” of the Purge, which helped elevate the zone’s storytelling.

Insidious (2015)

Insidious at Halloween Horror Nights 2015
Insidious at Halloween Horror Nights 2015

Following the success of the previous year, Blumhouse was granted an increased presence in HHN 25. This included two of the event’s nine houses being based on Blumhouse properties: Insidious and The Purge. The Insidious house was based on the first three movies from the franchise. Guests would enter the house via the Smith Estate facade and Dalton’s bedroom before entering The Further and passing through several key scenes from the movies.

During their journey, guests crossed paths with the Lipstick Face Demon, The Man Who Can’t Breathe, and The Bride in Black. The haunted house successfully captured the spirit of the Insidious series. The simple but impressive effects and techniques allowed the franchise’s iconic characters to deliver powerful scares.

The Purge (2015)

The Purge at Halloween Horror Nights 2015
The Purge at Halloween Horror Nights 2015

With its success as a scare zone and popularity with Blumhouse fans, creating a house for The Purge franchise only made sense. The house would be based on The Purge and The Purge: Anarchy. Similar to the scare zone from the previous year, guests entering the house would find themselves in the midst of the nation’s annual Purge event. As the guests navigated the maze of scenes from both movies, they were joined by “fake victims” who would be captured and murdered as part of the Purge festivities while trying to escape the other purgers.

While The Purge is more effective when executed as a scare zone rather than a house, the 2015 iteration was still solid. The Purge has always been a natural fit for HHN, and the house’s narrative was still well-done, with scares that allowed it to be genuinely terrifying.

Carey, Ohio has a storied history in HHN, so it makes perfect sense that Blumhouse would find its way into a scare zone based on its infamous drive-in movie theatre. All Nite Die-In’s scareactors and themes were divided into two halves. One was a black-and-white portion based on classic horror movies like The Wolfman, Dracula, and The Invisible Man. The other half would be modern movies such as Chucky, Freddy vs. Jason, and The Purge.

This scare zone was unique in its own right with the era-divided halves. Naturally, characters from Blumhouse’s The Purge were found in the modern line-up. Guests would encounter figures from The Purge franchise, such as the gray hooded skeleton, as well as the demon-mouth and smiling purgers.

The Horrors of Blumhouse (2017)

The Horrors of Blumhouse at Halloween Horror Nights 2017
The Horrors of Blumhouse at Halloween Horror Nights 2017

Two years later, Blumhouse would make its return to HHN in the first iteration of The Horrors of Blumhouse, a tent house based on three of their legendary franchises. Guests would navigate through scenes from The Purge, Sinister, and Insidious within the maze. After passing through the Blumhouse Productions logo, guests were greeted by a title card for Sinister, featuring a bloodied image of Bughuul. The blood trail led them into a series of gruesome scenes from the Oswalt house and the church, both iconic locations from the first two Sinister films. From there, the experience transitioned to chilling scenes from the original Purge and culminated with terrifying moments from the Insidious movies.

Featuring some of Blumhouse’s most popular franchises is undoubtedly a draw for attendees, but that wasn’t the best part of this house. As if that wasn’t enough, The Horrors of Blumhouse not only recreated iconic scenes from the first Insidious movie but also offered a special sneak peek of the franchise’s latest installment, Insidious: The Last Key. To top it off, the house even made an appearance in the Altars of Horror scare zone, serving as a teaser for that year’s haunted house lineup.

The Purge (2017)

The Purge at Halloween Horror Nights 2017
The Purge at Halloween Horror Nights 2017

True to the chaotic spirit of the Purge franchise, the inescapable dangers weren’t confined to just the houses that year. The Purge also returned as a scare zone, immersing guests in the horrors of the first three films. It featured fan-favorite elements like the auction hosted by the Old Elegant Woman and the eerie Smiling Purgers, along with new additions, such as a car outfitted with a steel cage containing a Purger, a victim, and a wood chipper.

Set in the New York section of the park, the scare zone felt like a full-blown invasion, with a multitude of scareactors creating a relentless atmosphere of fear. The inclusion of Kimmy’s car from The Purge: Election Year and the plain-clothes victims from the past heightened the feeling of being fully immersed in the world of The Purge.

The Horrors of Blumhouse (2018)

In its second iteration, The Horrors of Blumhouse had a more concise journey as it was based on Happy Death Day and The First Purge. Guests would cross through the Blumhouse Productions facade, entering into Happy Death Day. Here, they were greeted with an introductory jump scare by the Baby Face Killer — as well as a certain, pivotal poisoned cupcake — in the Bayfield College tunnel. They then witness the many deaths of Tree Gelbman at the hands of Babyface as she tries to figure out the mystery of the killer’s identity and why she keeps reliving the same day.

After exiting the Happy Death Day’s final scene, guests are brought into The First Purge via a transition hall of televisions commencing the New Founding Fathers of America’s original experiment. Guests are thrust into the streets of Staten Island where they encounter a variety of purgers. Not even the exit is safe as a final purger squeezes out one last jump scare as guests left the house.

The Horrors of Blumhouse (2022)

Horrors of the Blumhouse at Halloween Horror Nights 2022
The Horrors of the Blumhouse at Halloween Horror Nights 2022

Universal announced the return of The Horrors of Blumhouse for HHN 31, this time featuring a double feature of Freaky and The Black Phone. Its narrative was a dramatic retelling of the movies as guests attempted to escape the clutches of The Grabber and the Blissfield Butcher.

This version of The Horrors of Blumhouse may have been based on only two movies, but it’s among the longest houses Universal has created for Halloween Horror Nights. This is due to it utilizing both the extended queue of Fast and Furious: Supercharged and an additional tent to weave its story.

The Exorcist: Believer (2023)

The Exorcist: Believer at Halloween Horror Nights 2023
The Exorcist: Believer at Halloween Horror Nights 2023

The following year, the Jason Blum-produced The Exorcist: Believer made its way to the HHN 32 house lineup. Upon entering, guests were immediately transported to a Haitian market, complete with the smells of food cooking and the eerie sound of demonic growls, setting the stage for what was to come. Inside the house, guests were thrust into scenes from the movie, playing a role as the demons possessing Katherine and Angela pursued them.

This latest entry in The Exorcist franchise marked the first time the series had appeared at HHN since 2016. It also served as a living trailer for The Exorcist: Believer, which didn’t hit theaters until October 6, 2023—right in the middle of that year’s Halloween Horror Nights season.

M3GAN (2023)

M3GAN at Halloween Horror Nights 2023
M3GAN at Halloween Horror Nights 2023

After the success of the highly acclaimed M3GANher appearance at HHN was inevitable. Instead of a dedicated house or an anchored scare zone, M3GAN dolls randomly appeared in roaming hordes throughout the park. These M3GANs were similar in style to the beloved chainsaw drill teams and the zombie prisoners from 2008’s Zombies! scare zone. What made the M3GAN horde unique was their parkwide presence and that they weren’t meant to frighten guests. Instead, they performed a choreographed routine based on the film’s popular dance scene that would segue into a photo op.

Insidious: The Further (2024)

Insidious: The Further at Halloween Horror Nights 2024
Insidious: The Further at Halloween Horror Nights 2024

Based on the popular Insidious franchise, this house brings its guests into the infamous red door and into the Further. Insidious: The Further brings guests with the franchise’s most terrifying demons. At the start of the house, you’re guided by Elise Rainer’s voice as you enter the Red Door and cross into the Further. Once in the house, guests encounter monsters from the franchise, such as the Lipstick-Faced Demon, Key Face, and The Bride in Black.

The great thing about Insidious: The Further is that it’s based on the overall franchise rather than a specific movie. This helps it appeal to everyone, as watching the movies is not necessary to understand this house.

Enter the Blumhouse (2024)

Enter the Blumhouse at Halloween Horror Nights 2024
Enter the Blumhouse at Halloween Horror Nights 2024

Much like The Horrors of Blumhouse, Enter the Blumhouse is a scare zone based on several properties of the horror production company. Upon entering the San Francisco section of Universal Studios Florida, guests run a gauntlet of horror armed with some of Blumhouse’s most fearsome villains. This scare zone features the Grabber from The Black Phone, M3GAN, characters from The Purge, Millie Kessler, and the Blissfield Butcher from Freaky, as well as Tree Gelbman and the Baby Face Killer from Happy Death Day.

The scare zone works very well as a highlight of Blumhouse’s most popular franchises. As a bonus surprise this year, it also features a photo op for Blumhouse’s upcoming 2025 Wolfman reboot.

The accumulated points from each vehicle are then averaged to determine whether you’re Bug Bait (less than 100,000), Cosmically Average (100,000 – 150,000), or a Galaxy Defender (over 150,000). Of course, if we’re talking “games,” arcades are on the docket. Palace Theater Arcade in Universal Studios Florida is more than just a fancy facade. The pay-to-play arcade is themed as a grand movie theater.

Palace Theater Arcade features a fun variety of new and classic arcade games. After putting credit on a play card, guests can enjoy the likes of claw machines, pinball, air hockey, racing simulators, and more. While arcades may not be the primary reason for visiting a theme park, this one is definitely worth a visit to cool down and enjoy a refreshing break. It’s also not uncommon to find this writer pairing a Guitar Hero jam session within Palace Theater’s walls alongside a ride on Revenge of the Mummy.

Marvel Super Hero Island

Kingpin’s Arcade

Guests eager to test their luck can visit Kingpin’s Arcade, owned by one of Marvel’s most notorious villains. Enter from the streets of Marvel Super Hero Island, the exit of Doctor Doom’s Fear Fall, or the Cafe 4 entrance and purchase a play card to enjoy a variety of games.

Kingpin’s Arcade stands out as a premier destination for arcade enthusiasts, thanks to its expansive selection of games and immersive theming. Not only is this venue substantially larger with more games to enjoy, but it genuinely feels like a hideout that pays tribute to some of Marvel’s most villainous figures. Inside, you’ll see banners depicting comic versions of popular villains like Red Skull, Baron Zemo, and The Leader. Guests will also catch a look at the Lord of Latveria’s throne as they enter from Doctor Doom’s Fear Fall.

Guests team up with Princess Peach, Luigi, and our hero, Mario, in a cutting-edge attraction that uses specialized goggles, putting you directly into the game! Riders compete against Team Bowser, collecting coins and tossing shells at opponents while skillfully dodging obstacles in this thrilling race. Their coin collection and overall score are recorded via SUPER NINTENDO WORLD’s Power-Up Bands.

We were able to check out the hit attraction at Universal Studios Hollywood and look forward to its premiere at Universal Orlando Resort next year.

It’s worth noting that to fully engage with the interactive activities at SUPER NINTENDO WORLD, guests need to acquire the land’s innovative Power-Up Bands. Available in six different styles – Mario, Luigi, Peach, Daisy, Toad, and Yoshi – these bands function similarly to a mix between the Wizarding World of Harry Potter’s interactive wands and Volcano Bay’s TapuTapu. While these bands are sold separately, they enhance the immersive experience of the land significantly. However, guests can still enjoy racing in Mario Kart: Bowser’s Challenge and exploring SUPER NINTENDO WORLD without a band.

SUPER NINTENDO WORLD’s interactive activities vary from hitting question-mark blocks to slot machines (both of which grant players digital coins) and even activities that reward players with virtual character stamps (which are, in turn, worth even more coins). The more coins gathered by players, the greater their overall score, which creates a fun and competitive experience for guests of all ages.

As excited as we are about this aspect of Orlando’s SUPER NINTENDO WORLD, we’re looking forward to an even bigger mini-game.

Bowser Jr. Shadow Showdown

Bowser Jr. has stolen the Golden Mushroom and locked it away in his fortress. To reclaim it, players must collect three keys by overcoming interactive challenges set by his minions throughout the Mushroom Kingdom, creating an experience reminiscent of a live-action Mario Party. Here are the key challenges we can expect:

 • Goomba Crazy Crank – knock the Goomba off the roller by spinning the crank as fast as possible
 • Koopa Troopa POWer Punch – swipe your Power-Up Band at the right moment to hit a POW block, sending a turtle shell up a warp pipe, thereby taking out a passing Koopa Troopa
 • Piranha Plant Nap Mishap – turn off all the alarm clocks before Petey Piranha wakes up from his nap
 • Thwomp Panel Panic – flip every blue question-mark-block panel to a yellow exclamation-point-block one (in the right order) before the Thwomp strikes
 • Bob-omb Kaboom Room – solve the coin puzzle before the Bomb-omb goes off

Once players have collected all three keys, they will be granted access to Bowser Jr. Shadow Showdown. This interactive virtual reality game involves players using their whole bodies as they duck, jump, and swat in small groups while confronting Bowser Jr. and his flying Clown Car. Super Nintendo World’s final boss battle promises a different kind of attraction than the company’s typical fare. Following your magical exploits and adventures in The Wizarding World of Harry Potter, make your way to Diagon Alley’s Leaky Cauldron to fuel and feast. Beginning today, the menu welcomes two new additions for lunch and dinner – Hunter’s Chicken and Vegan Curry. These latest culinary creations are perfect for wizards and Muggles alike, promising to enchant your palate.

We sampled these new entrées to provide you with a firsthand look at what the Leaky Cauldron’s updated menu has to offer. Let’s dig in!

Leaky Cauldron – Hunter’s Chicken

The Leaky Cauldron’s Hunter’s Chicken features chicken wrapped in crispy bacon and served with a BBQ bordelaise sauce. This dish is topped with a blend of Monterey and cheddar cheese, accompanied by English minted peas, and is served alongside crispy wedge fries and pea tendrils.

This entreé left us thoroughly impressed, quickly climbing the ranks to become one of our favorite chicken offerings throughout Universal Orlando Resort. The harmony of the cheese coating paired with the bacon-wrapped chicken created a delightful fusion of flavors. Smothered in BBQ bordelaise sauce, it not only adds depth but also serves as the perfect dipping sauce for those crispy wedge fries.

Leaky Cauldron – Vegan Curry

The Vegan Curry introduces another plant-based choice to the Leaky Cauldron’s menu, offering a flavorful blend of plant-based Chick’n and potatoes in a rich curry sauce. This dish is served with pita bread for dipping and comes with a fresh garden salad, making it a wholesome and hearty option for those seeking a meat-free meal.

The combination of potatoes, peas, and carrots in the curry sauce is beautifully complemented by the vegan chicken, creating a well-rounded flavor profile. For those cautious about the spice, there’s no need to worry; the spice level is pleasantly mild, making it a delightful option for all palates. The complemented bread serves as the perfect utensil for those who prefer to forgo a spoon, allowing for an immersive and enjoyable curry experience. Additionally, the side garden salad provides a refreshing contrast to the rich flavors of the main dish.

Beyond these two exciting new dishes, guests can indulge in classic British pub fare at the Leaky Cauldron, including favorites like Bangers and Mash and Fish and Chips. Explore the complete menu and more in our comprehensive Leaky Cauldron guide here.

February is a month of many celebrations, and among the most cherished is the holiday of love and romance — Valentine’s Day. Orlando offers many options for residents and visitors to choose from, and Universal Orlando Resort is no different. The choices are seemingly endless, ranging from a vibrant entertainment district and award-winning theme parks to the luxurious resort hotels.

This begs the question of how one makes a perfect Valentine’s Day at Universal Orlando. You’re always welcome to explore at your own pace here. However, if you’re looking for inspiration, we’ve compiled a list of our favorite activities and destinations throughout Universal Orlando Resort to help guide your Valentine’s Day celebration. Starting, of course, at the epicenter of awesome – Universal CityWalk.

Celebrating Valentine’s Day at Universal CityWalk

Universal CityWalk has plenty of ways to enjoy Valentine’s Day, with several savory restaurants and nightlife activities to entertain you and yours. The best part? Parking is free after 6 PM on most evenings!

The classic dinner and a movie date

Antojitos Authentic Mexican Food at Universal CityWalk
Antojitos Authentic Mexican Food at Universal CityWalk

What’s more classically romantic than a meal and a movie? Our suggestion here would be Antojito’s Authentic Mexican Food since they have an exceptional menu and some of our favorite drinks.

Afterward, you can catch the latest flick at Universal Cinemark. Their plush luxury loungers and spacious theaters provide an outstanding viewing experience, making it an ideal choice if you’re looking to impress your date. Opting for Cinemark’s XD auditorium enhances your movie further with wall-to-wall screens, premium sound, and state-of-the-art projectors.

Split a milkshake at Toothsome’s Chocolate Emporium or Cowfish Sushi Burger Bar

Florida has warm, sunny days aplenty, and few things compliment them like a creamy milkshake. Universal CityWalk offers two excellent choices to grab a seat and a shake with your beau.

The Cowfish Sushi Burger Bar

The Cowfish Sushi Burger Bar
The Cowfish Sushi Burger Bar

The Cowfish Sushi Burger Bar isn’t just about their infamous burger and sushi fusions (or “burgushi” for those unfamiliar). They also offer premium spiked milkshakes like The King Lives, an alcohol-infused peanut banana shake that is delightful and worth a try.

Milkshakes from Toothsome Chocolate Emporium
The Toothsome Chocolate Emporium & Savory Feast Kitchen’s legendary milkshakes

Of course, you can’t talk about milkshakes at Universal CityWalk and leave out The Toothsome Chocolate Emporium & Savory Feast Kitchen. The restaurant is renowned for its delightful dinner offerings, yet Jacques’ Specialty Milkshakes are a popular choice, generous enough for sharing. With 13 unique and equally impressive flavors available, our top recommendation is the Espresso Buzzzz.

Take your date out for the nightlife at CityWalk

Dining and shopping are only a portion of what Universal CityWalk is known for. The entertainment complex also offers a slew of nightlife activities.

Invaders From Planet Putt at Hollywood Drive-In Golf

The Haunting of Ghostly Greens at Hollywood Drive-In Golf
The Haunting of Ghostly Greens at Hollywood Drive-In Golf

Playing a round of putt-putt at Hollywood Drive-In Golf is always a fun and cute suggestion, inviting you and your partner to navigate an 18-hole mini-golf course inspired by cinema. Choose from an epic sci-fi adventure in Invaders From Planet Putt, or opt for The Haunting of Ghostly Greens, which offers an eerie stroll through a haunted mansion’s garden cemetery. Tackle both courses for a full double-feature film scenario!

CityWalk's Rising Star

Additionally, Universal’s Rising Star offers a memorable opportunity to sing your heart out alongside a live band, dedicating your performance to your date.

Universal's Great Movie Escape
Universal’s Great Movie Escape

If you’re a geeky couple like this writer and his wife, you can opt for Universal’s Great Movie Escape, an escape room like no other! CityWalk’s latest addition features two adventure rooms to test your mettle based on popular Universal intellectual properties: Jurassic World: Escape and Back to the Future: OUTATIME.

Celebrating Valentine’s Day at Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure

If you want to make a memorable impact with your date, a day at Universal Orlando Resort’s world-class theme parks is the way to go. The way you explore and enjoy the parks can differ based on your personality or even your Hogwarts House, like your Ravenclaw alumnus writer. Below are several suggestions tailored to cater to these diverse preferences.

Sweep your sweetheart off their feet with a visit to Universal Orlando Resort’s theme parks, offering the gift of joy and togetherness at a fraction of the cost. Take advantage of discounted admission from Orlando Informer to create unforgettable memories this Valentine’s Day.

The relaxed and easy date

A date at Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure isn’t limited to just adrenaline-pumping rides and heart-pounding thrills. Engaging in one of Universal Orlando Resort’s interactive experiences stands out as a uniquely enjoyable option.

The queue of Men in Black Alien Attack at Universal Studios Florida

MEN IN BLACK Alien Attack is a classic in this regard, allowing you and your partner to join the ranks of MIB agents and battle the alien forces invading one of their rigorous training sessions.

E-Liminator X Blaster at Illumination’s Villain-Con Minion Blast

Alternatively, Illumination’s Villain-Con Minion Blast offers an innovative experience to keep your date interesting. Before entering the attraction, guests can collaborate to create their Minion profiles and customize their blasters via the Universal Orlando app. Once they have, they can select a mission or compete to see who can get the highest score and the most collectibles throughout the ride. As Illumination’s Villain-Con Minion Blast is part of Illumination’s Minion Land, you and your date can also enjoy a meal at Illumination’s Minion Cafe, rounding off the experience with a shared bite.

Finding romance through thrills and excitement

Hagrid's Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure at Islands of Adventure

Indulging in a few rides is a must when you’re at one of Universal Orlando’s world-class theme parks. Following this writer’s favorite selections is highly recommended to impress your significant other or create lasting memories. Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure is a top contender. Few things are cuter than sharing a motorcycle and sidecar as you go on an academic monster hunt with your date.

The Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man at Islands of Adventure
The Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man at Islands of Adventure

The Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man is another excellent selection. After transporting into the comic book adventures of everyone’s favorite wall-crawler, grab hold of one another for an edge-of-your-seat thrill ride as Spidey battles the Sinister Syndicate.

Bond over a show and find a quiet moment

Universal Orlando's Horror Make-Up Show
Universal Orlando’s Horror Make-Up Show

Some of the best opportunities for romance come from the smaller moments, and Universal Orlando Resort offers more than you may realize. Simple things like seeing Universal Orlando’s Horror Make-Up Show or The Bourne Stuntacular can provide the perfect bonding material.

Universal Studios Florida’s Central Park is perfect for enjoying the skyline, featuring lakeside seating away from the usual bustle of park traffic. Likewise, Islands of Adventure boasts picturesque spots, including panoramic views at Marvel Super Hero Island and the tranquil walkways near Me Ship, the Olive in Toon Lagoon. These locations provide perfect opportunities to relax and take in the scenery together.

Celebrating Valentine’s Day at the Lowes’ Universal Orlando Resort Hotels

Loews Portofino Bay Harbor Piazza
Loews Portofino Bay Harbor Piazza

While enjoying a date at CityWalk and the Universal Orlando theme parks, a visit to one of the Universal Orlando Hotels is highly recommended. The garden walk that connects Universal CityWalk to Loews Portofino Bay Hotel and Hard Rock Hotel is both leisurely and romantic. This path allows you to enjoy the beauty of floral greenery, bamboo stalks, and waterfront views, providing a serene backdrop for conversation as you stroll.

Enjoy Valentine’s Day dinner at one of the resort hotels

Impressing your date can be as simple as sharing an excellent meal together. Mama Della’s Ristorante is ideal, evoking the warmth and comfort of a home-cooked meal like Nona would prepare. Patrons may even be serenaded by their strolling musicians, adding to the overall ambiance.

Sal's Market Deli at Loews Portofino Bay Hotel

If a lunch date is more your style, Sal’s Market Deli offers some unique options like their ratatouille calzone, which is enough for two to enjoy.

Jakes American Bar at Loews Royal Pacific Resort
Jake’s American Bar at Loews Royal Pacific Resort

Jake’s American Bar at Loews Royal Pacific Resort offers a splendid dinner experience, blending a menu of classic American cuisine within the ambiance of a Pacific island setting. Jake’s adventurous theming is complemented by exceptional service and homemade pretzel rods, burgers, and other delicious offerings.

Make the night special at a seasonal event

Harbor Nights at Loews Portofino Bay Hotel
Harbor Nights at Loews Portofino Bay Hotel

If you want to go the extra mile this Valentine’s Day, the resort hotels have several culinary experiences and other seasonal events. Our favorite is Harbor Nights at Loews Portofino Bay Hotel. It’s a night of jazz, wine, and delicious food pairings. Similarly, Jake’s Beer Dinner at Loews Royal Pacific Resort offers local craft beer pairings with gourmet dishes. Both events happen several times a year and have varying dates, so you’ll want to watch our Universal Orlando Snapshot for when the next event occurs.

The Wantilan Luau at Loews Royal Pacific Resort is an exciting dinner show perfect for a special evening with your significant other. This tropical dinner show transports you on a journey through the cuisine of the Polynesian islands, featuring island music, knife twirlers, and hula and fire dancers. Meanwhile, guests can indulge in an all-you-care-to-enjoy buffet filled with Polynesian specialties, creating a memorable and immersive dining experience.

This separately ticketed event takes place every Saturday, with registration starting at 5:30 PM and seating beginning at 6 PM. Prices can vary with regular seating starting at $45 plus taxes and fees for children ages three to nine and $99 plus taxes and fees for adults. The premium seating option brings you closer to the performance and grants you a souvenir tiki mug. These rates start at $65 plus taxes and fees for children and $119 plus taxes and fees for adults.

“We’re going to Universal!”

This phase alone should get anyone of all ages excited for a vacation to Universal Orlando Resort. That being said, there might be someone in the family, like your teenager who’s been glued to their phone for months, who could use a healthy dose of enthusiasm for this upcoming adventure. So, here are seven tips to get your crew pumped for your visit to Universal Orlando Resort.

Your wallet will be thrilled when you purchase discounted admission to Universal Orlando Resort through your pals at Orlando Informer. It’s an easy way to save some dough to use on experiences with your family!

Get everyone involved in the planning process

We know you’re the mastermind behind those plane tickets, park passes, and hotel reservations. But hold on – before you start crafting the perfect itinerary, gathering everyone’s input will really make this trip one for the family scrapbook. From thrilling rides to delicious dining, there’s something for everyone.

Let’s start with the little ones. Ask them what their favorite characters and movies are. Have they been reading books about the world of Dr. Seuss? Do they run around the house pretending to be a superhero? Visit the park websites with them and see what they are interested in. This is also a good time to see if your little Slytherin is tall enough (or brave enough) to experience Harry Potter and the Escape from Gringotts

If you have older kids and teens at home, you’ve likely gotten a good handle on their interests by now. Have them take the reins and help shape your family’s park experience. Are they craving a milkshake from Toothsome Chocolate Emporium & Savory Feast Kitchen? Do they want some wave pool time at Volcano Bay? Taking their preferences into account keeps everyone on the same wavelength and makes the trip fun for all!

Browse vacation planning tools and websites together

Knowledge is power, so understanding the parks inside and out will aid you in getting the most out of your trip. Getting a lay of the land will help in making a plan with some wiggle room for spontaneity. Dive into vacation planning websites together to answer any outstanding questions and learn helpful travel tips, all while you bond over your collective excitement.

We at Orlando Informer just so happen to have over 200 pages covering Universal’s theme and water parks, hotels, and more for free. Our OI Universal Center is filled with tips, photos, videos, and reviews to help your family become park aficionados.

Plan themed movie nights

The Bourne Stuntacular at Universal Studios Florida
The Bourne Stuntacular at Universal Studios Florida

Leading up to your trip, set aside one night a week for a family movie night dedicated to the cinematic stories that will soon unfold before your eyes.

It’s perfectly fine to use this time for your 800th viewing of Despicable Me. However, the best use of movie night is introducing your kids to stories they don’t know. It will also gauge their ability to handle loud noises, scary things, and moments of peril.

For example, E.T. Adventure will be a lot more meaningful if they know who E.T. is. Stream one of the Bourne movies to see if they are interested in watching The Bourne Stuntacular. Bonus points if your family sits down to enjoy every Fast & Furious film together.

With a plethora of attractions based on films in a theme park that celebrates the magic of the cinema, family movie night becomes a preview into the adventures that await at Universal.

Start a countdown

Nothing helps build the excitement for a trip than counting down the days until it begins. Sure, you can cross the days off on a calendar. But why settle for the mundane when you can explore your creative side?

Design your own advent calendar, where each day unveils a travel necessity or accessory to pack away in your luggage. Or, opt for the tear-away countdown, eagerly ripping off each number every morning to unveil a new day of anticipation.

Have your kids earn their souvenir and snack money

Voodoo Doughnut at Universal CityWalk Orlando
Voodoo Doughnut at Universal CityWalk Orlando

Does your child long to wield a wand from Olivander’s Wand Shop? Is your teen itching to get their hands on the Instagram-worthy pink box of donuts from Voodoo Doughnut? Have them earn their souvenirs through doing chores and making their grade goals.

No big ticket item in mind? Well, let’s get creative! Divide your reward system into different categories: Splurges $50 and over, budget-friendly under $30, snack over $15, shirt under $35. The idea is to score their vacation wants by putting in the effort.

Get pumped about walking

Let’s talk vacation fitness. When both kids and parents are used to a desk-bound daily routine, stepping into 8+ hours on your feet all of a sudden can be a bit of a shock to the system.

On my most recent visit to Universal Islands of Adventure, I logged 12,789 steps. That’s 6.1 miles! Let’s prepare for this by getting your family on their feet. Start with 15-20 minute walks around your neighborhood with everyone clad in comfortable sneakers.

While we know that this might not get someone “excited,” it’s a step (thousands of them, really) towards setting the expectations of the experience.

Don’t over-excite your family

This last tip seems counter to what we’re talking about here. Keeping everyone excited about your Universal Orlando trip is fun, but be weary of pre-trip burnout.

Be respectful of your group’s activities outside of theme park planning. Don’t shove attraction videos in your kid’s face immediately after school. While some of us live and breathe all things theme parks (raises hand), your family might not be on the same rollercoaster of enthusiasm. So, hold off on shoving POV attraction videos in your kid’s face the minute they come home from school. Let them do their own thing and understand when it’s time to ease in and out of the planning.

If you drive them crazy with praise about the 70-mile-per-hour launch on Jurassic World VelociCoaster, their interest in this thrill could become nothing more than “Let’s get this over with.” Remember to save some magic and excitement for the parks. Everyone will enjoy it better that way.

As the temperatures drop, festive tunes fill the air, and decorations adorn every corner – the holidays are officially here! And when it comes to decking the halls, Universal Orlando Resort doesn’t just participate; it steals the show! From the coziness of The Wizarding World of Harry Potter to their original festive character, Earl the Squirrel, greeting all of his new friends, they have truly outdone themselves.

One of the more unique ways Universal Orlando celebrates the holidays this season is by paying homage to theme park attractions of the past through Christmas ornaments. They are hung amongst the many decorations, and our team was able to spot some of these discreet surprises to share with you!

Dueling Dragons

Islands of Adventure, Islands of Adventure Trading Company

Once upon a time, before Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure and even before The Wizarding World of Harry Potter, the fire and ice dragons were in a constant struggle with one another, and riders were thrown right in the middle of it on dueling tracks. While it was sad to see this opening day attraction go, it made way for arguably one of the greatest rides to date.

Universal Orlando Resort decided not only to give Dueling Dragons its own Halloween Horror Nights house in 2023 but also to celebrate it this holiday season. The fire and ice dragon ornaments can be found on the tinsel surrounding the Islands of Adventure Trading Company.

Poseidon’s Fury

Islands of Adventure, DeFoto’s Expedition Photography

The echoes of the recently-retired walk-through attraction still reverberate this Yuletide. Those who dared step into the colossal temple would find themselves in the heart of a clash of titans. The pivotal role of Poseidon’s trident in the epic battle against Lord Darkenon is commemorated in its miniature ornament version – make sure to check it out at DeFoto’s Expedition Photography.

The Eighth Voyage of Sinbad

Islands of Adventure, DeFoto’s Expedition Photography

While searching for Poseidon’s trident at Defoto’s Expedition Photography, be on the lookout for Sinbad’s swords! This action-packed stunt show took place in the Lost Continent and showcased our hero, Sinbad, and his sidekick, Kabob, hunting for treasure hidden in a cave. Even though the show’s 19-year run ended in 2018, the legend still lives on.

Terminator 2 3D

Universal Studios Florida, The Bourne Stuntacular

The Terminator famously stated he would be back, but we didn’t expect it to be in this fashion. Terminator 2 3D combined live-action stunts with 3D film and ultimately closed in 2017. Head over to The Bourne Stuntacular, the show that replaced the vacancy left by Terminator 2 3D, to spot the famous silver skull with red eyes hidden in a wreath.

Lucy: A Tribute

Universal Studios Florida, The Brown Derby

Before the combined UNIVRS store and Hello Kitty shop, there was Lucy: A Tribute. This little exhibit that closed in 2015 showcased many artifacts from Lucille Ball’s life and awards given to The Lucy Show and I Love Lucy. Keep your eyes peeled for the famous Vitameatavegamin bottle ornament on the Brown Derby Hat Shop in the Hollywood section of the park.

Fievel’s Playland

Universal Studios Florida, The Kitty Cat Club

Earlier this year, Fievel’s Playland closed for good to make way for the new Dreamworks Animation land coming soon to Universal Studios Florida. Fievel can be spotted amongst the decorations around The Kitty Kat Club.

Hercules & Xena: Wizards of the Screen

Universal Studios Florida, Mel’s Drive-In

This closed attraction goes pretty far back into the theme park archives. This show, a relic from 1997 to 2000, didn’t just entertain – it threw viewers right into the heart of the movie. Where this classic production once captivated audiences, Transformers: The Ride – 3D now reigns supreme. Swing by Mel’s Drive-In for a tiny treasure keeping the nostalgia alive.

Back to the Future: The Ride

Universal Studios Florida, Central Park

Before handing the reins to The Simpsons, this attraction had an impressive run between 1991 and 2007. Spot the famous DeLorean hanging from the East Green sign in Central Park.

Alfred Hitchcock: The Art of Making Movies

Universal Studios Florida, Universal Orlando’s Horror Make-Up Show

This fusion of 3D film and live performance opened alongside Universal Studios Florida in 1990. Alfred Hitchcock: The Art of Making Movies commemorated the 40+ year history Alfred Hitchcock had with Universal Studios before closing in 2003 to make way for Shrek 4-D (RIP to this attraction). The ornament paying tribute to this retired attraction can be seen outside of Universal Orlando’s Horror Make-Up Show.

Dynamite Nights Stunt Spectacular

Universal Studios Florida, Starbucks

Speaking of opening day attractions, Dynamite Nights Stunt Spectacular is another remembered in ornament form. This Miami Vice-inspired stunt show took place from 1990 to 2000 on the Universal Studios Florida Lagoon and was packed with tricks performed by live actors and pyrotechnics. Head over to Starbucks to find the glittery jet ski hiding in the tinsel.

JAWS

Universal Studios Florida, Starbucks

While checking out the Dynamite Nights Stunt Spectacular ornament, keep those eyes peeled for Bruce donning a Santa hat. Back in the day, JAWS, an opening day attraction, held its ground until 2012 when it made way for Diagon Alley. This boat ride around Amity Island would have thrill-seekers face-to-face with the legendary great white beast.

Kongfrontation

Universal Studios Florida, Sahara Traders

Before there was Skull Island: Reign of Kong at Islands of Adventure, there was the ever-popular opening day attraction Kongfrontation. Riders followed along on Kong’s path of destruction until Revenge of the Mummy took over in 2002. This incredible ape can be found on the corner of Sahara Traders.

Twister: Ride It Out

Universal Studios Florida, Race Through New York Starring Jimmy Fallon

This extreme experience plunged participants into the blockbuster movie Twister, unveiling the special effects that brought this film to life. Intense winds and flying farm animals were just a glimpse into what this wild attraction offered. The tribute ornament for Twister: Ride It Out can be found outside of Race Through New York Starring Jimmy Fallon, which is where this thrilling experience once stood.

Curious George

Universal Studios Florida, Metropolis

In 2001, Curious George stole the spotlight as a giant balloon at Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. This moment is referenced in the metropolis façade, a nod to the whimsical presence of everyone’s favorite curious little monkey.

Ghostbusters Spooktacular

Universal Studios Florida, New York Firehouse

The Ghostbusters franchise has been part of the tapestry of Universal Studios Florida since its early days. With a dedicated attraction, HHN house, merchandise, and more, it would only make sense for a slimy homage by the New York firehouse.

The Funtastic World of Hanna-Barbera

Universal Studios Florida, Music Plaza

The Funtastic World of Hanna-Barbera had riders joining forces with Yogi Bear and Boo-Boo on a quest to save Elroy Jetson in this adventure that delighted guests until 2002. You can find a reminder of this journey at the Universal Music Plaza kiosk across from the Super Silly Stuff store.

1. Those two velociraptors screaming at each other mean more than you think!

As you muster up the courage to take on Jurrasic World, don’t forget to wave to the two velociraptors at the entrance! Their names, Pyrock and Blizrock, are a nod to the two dragons that once battled on the Dragon Challenge coaster.

2. For another Dragon Challenge Easter Egg, check out the Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure queue!

Pyrock, who represented Fire, and Blizrock, who represented Ice, aren’t only protecting the entrance to Jurrasic World Velocicoaster. Dragon Challenge, which Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure replaced, made its mark on the queue near the entrance wall of the ruins. Though the “Dueling Club” is also a club at Hogwarts run by its very own Dark Arts Professor, Gilderoy Lockhart, the red and blue dragon surrounding these words leads fans to believe there is a dual meaning.

3. Head down Knockturn Alley to find a reference to Jaws!

As you turn down this mysterious cobblestone path within Diagon Alley, keep your eyes open for a window filled with shrunken heads. These heads, located in front of Borgin and Burkes, can be silenced with the Mimblewimble spell, but if you take the time to listen to their music, you can hear a familiar ditty. This tune, “Show Me the Way to Go Home” is famous for its feature in the Jaws film with the three leading men. The next time you find yourself lost in Knockturn, listen out for the lyrics because “you will always hear [them] singing a song.”

4. For another Jaws reference, check out the record shop in front of Diagon Alley!

Jaws references are hidden all over Diagon Alley since it directly replaced the opening day attraction. While you’re heading in to exchange your money at Gringotts Wizarding Bank, check the windows of the record shop in London. There is one album labeled “Here’s to Swimmin’ with Bowlegged Women” by the Quint Trio. This is a nod to the song Quint sings in Jaws.

5. What is a Minion’s favorite meal? BANANAS!

Head over to Despicable Me Minion Mayhem to see one of the best-kept secrets of Universal! As you make your way through the queue, keep your eyes peeled for real banana trees planted next to the path. It adds a “bunch” of fun to all of the Minion madness!

6. There are no straight lines in Seuss Landing!

In Seuss Landing, whimsy's always expanding, where whimsical wonders are quite outstanding
In Seuss Landing, whimsy’s always expanding, where whimsical wonders are quite outstanding!

One of the most memorable parts of Dr. Seuss’ illustrations was the lack of straight lines. Universal’s Creative team brought this to life by making sure his one trademark was followed through a world of twirly and swirly lines, decorations, and trees within Seuss Landing at Islands of Adventure. Over the years, Universal Orlando Resort has also re-homed a number of trees from areas impacted by hurricanes. Their unique lines and variety were an easy way to incorporate the playfulness of Seuss’ work into the natural elements of Seuss Landing.

7. There is a piece of the Berlin Wall behind Hard Rock on City Walk

Want to show off your history knowledge? Walk along the path on the right-hand side of Hard Rock Cafe in City Walk to see an authentic piece of the Berlin Wall!

8. There is a nod to the Fantastic Four in front of Doctor Doom’s Fearfall

Before stepping onto this thrill-seeking drop ride, look closely at the ground in front of the attraction. Four spaces are dedicated to the Fantastic Four team — Human Torch, Mr. Fantastic, Invisible Woman, and Thing – and presumably, all that’s left of the Fantastic Four after Doctor Doom dispatched our brave superheroes with his powerful, fear-based weapon. These are often overlooked, but before you take a chance on Doctor Doom’s Fearfall, make sure to point them out to your family and friends!

9. Look for “Adam” all over Marvel Super Hero Island!

While you’re walking around enjoying the sights of Marvel Super Hero Island, where the thunderous roars of The Incredible Hulk Coaster echo in the background, spend some time admiring the artwork done by Marvel Illustrator Adam Kubert. He is a long-time artist for both Marvel and DC and designed the giant images of famous comic book characters found all over Superhero Island. But here’s the twist – Adam’s hidden his name within each masterpiece. So, the next time you stroll through this part of the park, unleash your inner detective and see who can find his name first!

Planning a trip to Universal Orlando Resort is a very exciting and fun experience, but it can also be a little stressful and sometimes overwhelming when it comes to managing your budget. The typical travel expenses can add up very fast, but with enough research and preparation, you can keep vacation costs in check while enjoying a relaxing getaway.

Determining the Total Budget

Whether planning a fun-filled family adventure, a romantic escape for two, or a thrilling solo trip, one thing remains vital – nailing down that grand total budget. It all starts with making a list of the essential components to create your dream vacation: travel, lodging, park tickets, food, and souvenirs. Determine how much you are willing to spend within each category and add all these amounts together to find your total budget for your Universal Orlando visit. With this in place, it is time to figure out how to stay within your financial blueprint.

Travel

Flying to Orlando or hitting the road, travel costs can quickly consume a huge chunk of your vacation spending plan. To get the most bang for your buck, decide how you want to arrive. If you choose to travel by plane, begin researching airfare from your closest airport to Orlando International Airport (MCO), the closest airport to Universal Orlando Resort. If the airline tickets land within your budget, awesome! Snag them and cross that off your list. If it doesn’t, do not fear.

Try going to Google Flights and plugging in MCO as your destination, the travel dates, and how many tickets are needed. Then, click on “Track Prices” to be notified whenever the cost of the plane tickets has changed. If you are flexible with your travel dates and are not particularly picky about the airline you fly, hundreds can be saved in this component. For instance, a typical ticket on American Airlines to MCO can average around $275 per person, while the average flight on Spirit Airlines can average around $125 per person for the same dates.

Once you have made it to MCO, you will now need a way to get to your lodging destination. This can be an expense most people forget to prepare for. If you are staying at a Universal Orlando Resort hotel, we recommend checking out the Super Star Shuttle, the resort’s transportation from MCO. This service must be booked at least 24 hours prior to your scheduled flight time and costs $39 per person above 10 years old and $36 per child ages 3-9.

Alternative options for airport transport are cabs and ride-share services. A ride-share service, like Uber or Lyft, from MCO to the Universal Orlando Resort area is usually about $30 for the cheapest option.

Driving to Universal Orlando can also be a cost-efficient choice, depending on where you are coming from. Opting for a road trip involves additional cost factors, like hotel parking fees. Many Orlando hotels offer convenient parking options for a small additional cost, so be sure to research whether your chosen accommodation includes this service.

Lodging

Thankfully, Orlando does not have a shortage of places to stay while on vacation. In fact, Universal Orlando Resort has eight different hotel options for any budget. They range from Value Hotels, such as the Endless Summer Resorts, to Premier Hotels, like Hard Rock Hotel.

Pricing equates to their amount of amenities and comfort. There is a hotel option for any budget on Universal property. The Endless Summer Resorts start at about $96 a night, while Hard Rock Hotel begins at $372 per night. Each accommodation provides complimentary transportation to the theme parks and Universal CityWalk. Some hotels have water taxis in addition to free shuttles and beautiful walking paths that have their own security lines. These are usually less crowded than the main security hub outside of CityWalk, allowing less time spent going through security and more time knocking out some of your must-do attractions. It’s important to note that the Universal Endless Summer Resort hotels do not have walking path access but still benefit from quick and easy bus transportation.

If you decide to stay outside of Universal Property, there are plenty of accommodations in the surrounding area. When choosing this option, you may be faced with adding transportation costs to your budget. Not all off-site hotels have free transportation to CityWalk and the theme parks like Universal Orlando properties do. This may cause you to depend on ride-share services or renting a car to get around.

Park Tickets

Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit at Universal Studios Florida

Fortunately for your wallet, Orlando Informer offers a variety of discounted tickets to fit any vacationer’s plans. Purchasing through your pals at Orlando Informer can save you up to $63.37 over gate prices, meaning more cash to allocate to some delicious park snacks or sweet keepsakes. And if you are eager to minimize wait times during your Universal visit, we also have Universal Express Passes available at a lower rate, ensuring you make the most of your visit without the hassle of lines! Check out all of the possible savings here.

Food

Otto's Noodle Bowl from Illumination's Minion Cafe

Quickly after you arrive to Universal, you’ll find an array of dining choices and be faced with the delicious dilemma of what to eat that stays within your spending plan. This can especially be true if Universal Orlando is currently in the middle of one of their festivities. Events such as Mardi Gras and the Holidays at Universal offer a variety of limited-time food options to celebrate these occasions. If you are a foodie who wants to try everything, this can add up quickly. Research in advance what dishes you absolutely want to try and would be bummed leaving your vacation without doing so. This could be a crêpe at Central Park Crepes in Universal Studios, a burger from Wimpy’s in Islands of Adventure, or a specialty treat from Voodoo Doughnut in CityWalk.

Once you have made your list of “must tries,” factor in the prices of these items into your food budget. Those items listed above are all from quick-service food locations and tend to be lower-cost options. You can plan to spend about $15 to $20 per person in this case. Also check out our article on “Bang for Your Buck” Snacks for some great budget-friendly choices!

Another tactic? Bring your own snacks and drinks with you. While Universal won’t permit coolers or full meals to be brought into the parks, having a lunch box of snacks and a refillable water bottle can save you some serious dough throughout the day. Please check the park rules for acceptable containers and food items as you pack your bag for your day.

Prefer to savor and take time to enjoy your meals? Universal Orlando has many delicious, full-service dining establishments to check out. Lombard’s Seafood Grille, Mythos Restaurant, Antojitos Authentic Mexican Food, and The Toothsome Chocolate Emporium & Savory Feast Kitchen are popular and fantastic options on Universal property. Be prepared to spend about $50 per person dining at these restaurants.

Souvenirs

Dervish and Banges in Hogsmeade

Be it a funny Minions sweatshirt, a precious E.T. plush, or your favorite Harry Potter character’s wand, you’ll want to be leaving your Universal Orlando vacation with some sort of memento. What better way to remember your trip than with a piece of Universal to bring home?

Similar to the food situation, you may find yourself overwhelmed with options. One pro tip is to purchase a Universal gift card to allocate your souvenir spending. You can get these ahead of time at a local grocery store or purchase a pre-loaded Visa card to achieve the same purpose. Once the gift card is used up, you know not to purchase any more merchandise. This strategy is also sometimes a lifesaver for parents, who can dole out pre-loaded gift cards to their children and help them determine their wants and purchases.

As you can see, there is a Universal Orlando trip to suit nearly every wallet size. Let’s not forget that regardless of your financial plan, you are sure to have an unforgettable time during your Universal Orlando Resort vacation!

Back in what feels like centuries ago, I was sorted into Ravenclaw by Pottermore. I’d wanted Gryffindor, but the more I researched and learned, the sorting made sense. Ravenclaws value wisdom, cleverness, and wit, and it isn’t unheard of for members of this house to be a bit eccentric or a maybe even an oddball, making them one of the more accepting houses by nature. It’s no wonder, then, that the blue, silver, and bronze colors would resonate within me. Given this and my love for Universal Orlando Resort, I wanted to rediscover The Wizarding World of Harry Potter in a new way. More specifically, appreciating it as a true Ravenclaw would.

Now, it’s unwise to just run into these things. Even the most jubilant occasion has to have a carefully thought plan in order for it to be successful. So, how does one experience The Wizarding World of Harry Potter as a proud Ravenclaw? Of course, you could simply go all-in on merchandise; purchasing hoodies, pins, scarves, and everything in between; and enjoy the parks, content in your fandom. That’d be fine as we all love showing our house spirit. However, for those wanting a deeper relationship, there are ways to better know The Wizarding World of Harry Potter. Before we get too ahead of ourselves here, preparations are in order.

Diagon Alley, Universal Studios Florida

Experiences for Ravenclaws

What: Fun Facts; Easter Eggs; Spellcasting; Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure
Location: Hogsmeade and Diagon Alley

As Ravenclaw students, we’re an eccentric, studious lot who are inclined to know every detail about The Wizarding World. Though this would include factoids like the 7,456 bricks that make the entrance wall to Diagon Alley; the 62,000 crystals of Gringott’s 4 chandeliers — the meticulous counting of each I’ll neither confirm nor deny having personally done — and the fact that the Knight Bus near King’s Cross is an actual movie prop from Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, that’s not what we’re here for today. We’re wanting the kind of brain candy that strengthens the bond with our house.

Dervish and Banges in Diagon Alley, Universal Studios Florida

On this list is making sure to not miss items such as Ravenclaw Alum Gilderoy Lockhart’s book in Dervish and Banges shop display, Moaning Myrtle playfully haunting the washrooms in Hogsmeade Village, or Rowena Ravenclaw’s living portrait (the latter which can only be visited by those who take the walking tour of Hogwarts Castle). Some of these may be a little less adventurous than others, but all of them are worthwhile endeavors true to the silver and blue.

Now, here is where those interactive wands come in — as we know, throughout the grounds of both Hogsmeade and Diagon Alley, you can find golden symbols in the form of what are essentially magic compasses to show you how to use your wands to interact with The Wizarding World. The symbols will show you how to use your wand, and we know that Ravenclaws will work to cast the perfect spells. Each of Ollivander’s interactive wands comes with a map depicting the 25 spell locations throughout The Wizarding World, and a stop to Knockturn Alley will reveal two, lesser-known, “secret” locations (or you can refer to our easy-to-follow guide). There’s simply no better way to enjoy The Wizarding World of Harry Potter than memorizing each location by heart and becoming a master spell-caster. My favorite spell is Reparo, which can be cast on the suit of armor at the Blacksmith Shop in Diagon Alley, but there are so many that you’ll easily find yours in your adventures.

Of course, no visit to Universal Orlando Resort is complete without the inclusion of a ride or show. My top recommendation would be Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure. This story-coaster doubles as a special Care of Magical Creatures class conducted by the beloved half-giant and a thrilling attraction with plenty to absorb through the queue. Ravenclaws will love soaking in the queue details, which features class equipment statistics, creature information, and even tracking down the hidden pixies in each room. The ride is a fun misadventure where you’ll encounter and learn about all sorts of fantastic beasts. As the perfect way to end your day, don’t forget to catch The Nighttime Lights at Hogwarts Castle. This breathtaking projection show embellishes the castle with not only the colors of Ravenclaw, but each of the school’s houses, showing us that no matter your sorting, Hogwarts is nothing without each house (a notion that every Ravenclaw shares).

Luna Lovegood’s Wand in Universal Studios CityWalk

Shopping for Ravenclaws

Where: Scribbulus; Madam Malkins Robes for All Occasions; Ollivanders Wand Shop
Location: Diagon Alley

Most will tell you Dervish and Banges in The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Hogsmeade is famously your one-stop shop for buying all things “Wizarding.” There’s nearly nothing they don’t have in terms of Harry Potter merch and you can even snag a poster of The Quibbler, The Wizarding World’s alternative magazine published and edited by Luna Lovegood’s father, Xenophilius Lovegood. However, the busy crowds found in this store could hold us back from our studies or moving about our day. On busy days like that, I recommend visiting Madam Malkin’s Robes for All Occasions and Scribbulus over in The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Diagon Alley. Sure, they’re separate stores, but they’re a short walk from each other and you’ll find everything you need more efficiently. Fashionistas can purchase perfectly fitted school robes, seasonal attire, and even Rowena Ravenclaw’s diadem at Madam Malkin’s. Over at Scribbulus, you’ll find quills, stamps, parchment and other academic essentials for the notes you’ll assuredly take during our journey through the parks.

Finally, we need to acquire our most important item — a wand! Garrick Ollivander, The Wizarding World’s most notable wandmaker, has a shop in each park. Both are just as reputable as the other, but those wanting to follow Harry’s journey will want to visit the main branch in Diagon Alley. Not only is this location larger, providing a more comfortable and smoother experience, but this is also where the store is canonically located. Our house wands are limited to either Luna Lovegood or Cho Chang; but since the shop is literally owned and operated by a former Ravenclaw, whichever your favorite is will suffice. Whether the wand you choose — or, more likely, chooses you — is a birthday or limited edition wand, just be sure that it’s an interactive one. Now, with our supplies gathered, it’s time to fuel up.

Butterbeer in Diagon Alley at Universal Studios Florida

Food and Drink for Ravenclaws

Where: Three Broomsticks, Honeydukes, Sugarplum’s Sweet Shop, Hog’s Head Pub
Location: Hogsmeade and Diagon Alley

The Wizarding World offers an array of culinary options suitable for any Ravenclaw to maintain our immeasurable perception. If a proper mid-day meal in the parks is what you’re looking for, the rotisserie smoked chicken with corn on the cob and roasted potatoes at Three Broomsticks is the smart choice. It provides enough rounded nutrition for the day without completely befuddling us. One of my favorite snacks is a tin of Bertie Bott’s Every Flavor Beans. Each flavor is different and you never know which you’ll get next, adding a fun perk while taking in the sights or waiting to board the next attraction. Another quintessential treat would be a Cauldron Cake. Its size makes it perfect for a quick, delectable break between attractions and can be easily consumed on-the-go. I like to think of its reusable, silicone cauldron framing as a cheeky representation of our bookish tendencies and I love that it comes with the recipe so you can remake it at home. Either of these can be found at Honeydukes or Sugarplum’s Sweet Shop for your enjoyment.

Enjoying a mug of Butterbeer is essential when you’re visiting The Wizarding World of Harry Potter. However, as much as the parks do their best, obtaining this fan-favorite specialty drink can be a hassle. My time-saving hack is getting mine from the Hog’s Head Pub in Three Broomsticks in Hogsmeade. They are rarely very busy and their staff is exceptionally friendly. Alternatively, if timed right, the Hopping Pot in Diagon Alley can be a more rewarding option. There may be a mild line, but you can grab your favorite type of Butterbeer here. Bonus points from this writer will be awarded to the students who opt to have their Butterbeer served warm in a souvenir tankard, as is canon in the stories.

It hits. That moment when the day’s fast pace has caught up with you and the world has suddenly hit the slow motion button. A zombie-like haze overcomes all of your senses and basic functions, and the only words you can muster emerge as near-incoherent, slurred stammering rather than the thoughtful communication you’d hoped for. This calls for one thing — coffee! But you’re at a bustling theme park with your family — more specifically, you’re at Universal Orlando Resort. You can’t simply leave everyone, there’s barely a moment amidst the brain fog to properly research “Universal Studios coffee,” and you can forget about trekking to a local bean brewer for a cup of that life-giving nectar. We’re at an impasse and we need a solution — stat!

So this begs the question: Where on Universal Orlando Resort’s property can we find nature’s revitalizing elixir?

Cinnabon at Universal’s Islands of Adventure

As a self-proclaimed coffee aficionado and someone who functions almost entirely on caffeine, I’ve found myself caught in this scenario more times than I care to recall. In order to guide you through this dilemma, I’ll go over where each coffee shop is located, the general cost of bean water there, and how they may differ from each other in terms of coffee blends and types.

Never fear, dear readers- let me show you the way!

Starbucks Coffee at Universal Studios Florida

Starbucks Coffee

Located in:
– CityWalk, across from AMC
– New York, Universal Studios Florida
– Port of Entry, Universal’s Islands of Adventure
Coffee price range: $2.69 – $5.79 plus tax

When it comes to coffee, Starbucks is unquestionably the nation’s steadfast provider. They’re the coffee shop that’s familiar to everyone and you can find them no matter where you are. Universal Orlando Resort is no exception. There’s a Starbucks Coffee located just about anywhere a guest can access on the resort’s property. Each hotel features either a fully-functioning Starbucks or is at least equipped with Starbucks products. If you’re visiting the parks, the most convenient Starbucks will be at CityWalk’s main entrance as one of the first establishments you pass by, on your left. If you find yourself in need while you’re inside the parks, fear not — at Universal Studios Florida, you’ll find them in New York, located near the San Francisco border, opposite from Louie’s Italian Restaurant. Islands of Adventure has an establishment at the end of Port of Entry just as you turn to Marvel Super Hero Island. If you’re looking for a quick breakfast, each location also offers pastries and limited sandwiches in addition to the brand’s complete drink menu for your convenience.

Cinnabon in Port of Entry at Universal’s Islands of Adventure

Cinnabon

Located in:
– Port of Entry, Islands of Adventure
– Universal CityWalk, across from Starbucks
Coffee price range: $3.29 – $4.79 plus tax

Much like Starbucks, Cinnabon is a reputable chain with on-site locations offering the brand’s standard menu of baked goods and beverages. If you are heading into the parks, you can easily spot them at the entrance of CityWalk to your right and at Port of Entry’s end over in Islands of Adventure. Both locations offer their full menu to choose from, and patrons in search of a decent cup of coffee have a few options here. They can purchase a hot cup of the chain’s Signature blend or opt for their famous Mochalatta Chill beverage. Cinnabon also offers cold brew coffee, which comes in Cinnamon Bun, vanilla, or caramel flavors. I prefer to steer more in the local direction rather than nationwide chains when I’m grabbing my java or recommending where to find yours, but I won’t pass judgement on anyone for their preferences. Regardless of where you stand on the matter, there’s certainly no arguing that Cinnabon is always a solid option to grab your fix from.

TODAY Cafe

Located in:
– Production Central, Universal Studios Florida
Coffee price range: $3.99 – $4.69 plus tax

I hide nothing when it comes to my love for Today Cafe. They have a great menu that’s unique from anything else you can get on park property, and this is the coffee shop I turn to for my caffeinated needs while visiting Universal. Being the picky coffee fiend I am, that says a lot! Their coffee is a smooth, delicious, and exclusive dark roast blend of Sumatran, Peruvian, and Ethiopian beans. Guests have the option to have it served in the form of lattes, cappuccinos, nitro blends, espresso, and hot or iced coffee. All of those options can be further enhanced with flavors of vanilla, hazelnut, or caramel for an additional ninety-nine cents. If you want my advice, this is the best coffee shop across Universal Orlando Resort. Today Cafe consistently brews a fine cuppa, and the value isn’t bad either. If you find yourself in the mood for a nibble, they offer a great selection of sandwiches and pastries to pair with with your coffee, and the wait to retrieve your order is never terrible.

Lard Lad Donuts

Located in:
– Springfield, U.S.A, Universal Studios Florida
Coffee price range: $3.00 – $4.25 plus tax

This one seems to sneak under most people’s radar. When you think of Lard Lad Donuts, the first thing that comes to mind are the donuts, and rightfully so. With that in mind, what pairs better with a donut than a good cup of coffee? In the spirit of this culinary tradition, Lard Lad serves their own brew. We should take a moment here to note that it’s only served as a standard cup and its flavor is on the bolder side with only half and half or milk in lieu of creamer and flavorings. However, none of this should deter you. Especially when paired with a tasty sweet like The Big Pink, a stronger coffee taste can be quite complementing. If you find yourself around the Springfield area and in need of some extra pep, you’ll also enjoy knowing that there’s rarely ever a line. This means that getting a coffee from a welcoming Team Member is always quick and easy. At the very least, I say if it’s good enough for Chief Wiggum, it’s good enough for me.

Finnegan’s Bar & Grill

Located in:
– New York, Universal Studios Florida
Coffee price range: $2.99 – $12.50 plus tax.

Finnegan’s Bar & Grill offers a selection of 3 different coffee types: Cafe Latte, Cappuccino, and Espresso. This is already a solid start as it falls in line with most full-service restaurants’ offerings, but anyone wanting some spirit with their bean brew can opt for a traditional Irish Coffee, which is a blend of Irish Whiskey and coffee. Astute readers may have noticed that this is technically an off-menu item since it’s not officially listed, but don’t worry — the fan-favorite restaurant has a full bar, meaning that they can craft just about anything you wish. All you’d need to do is simply request it from your server. Finnegan’s typically requires that their patrons are seated in order to be served on which could take a while depending on their crowd level. I’d suggest taking advantage of the bar counter since they’re the speedier choice to grab your beverage from.

Universal’s Fresh Eats

Location:
– Universal Orlando Security Rotunda
Coffee price range: $3.29 – $4.79 plus tax.

Much like Diagon Alley, The Fresh Eats stand is a vendor that’s hidden in plain sight amongst the daily bustle of eager guests and a large souvenir venue nearby. They offer three options of Starbucks brews as part of their standard offerings: regular cold brew, Vanilla cold brew, and regular coffee, as well as seasonal selections like their Unicorn Frappuccino. As a precaution, it’s worth mentioning that they’re only purchasable in the company’s “Grande” size, but it’s still a decent spot to grab your coffee from. In addition to this venue serving Starbucks, this is another location with little to no wait on average since guests crossing through the rotunda are either more concerned about making their way through the Security gates or are too distracted by the rack of limited edition Back to the Future glassware and other eye-catching merchandise. They also have select offerings from Voodoo Donuts, which always pair perfectly with that cup of Joe as a quick breakfast before making your way to the parks.

That leads me to my next location.

Voodoo Doughnut

Located in:
– Universal CityWalk, by NBC Sports Grill & Brew
Coffee price range: $3.29 plus tax

Voodoo Doughnut has earned a nationwide reputation around their famed donuts, but I would contend that they should be also be known for coffee. Through a partnership with Portland-based Nosso Familia — a coffee company whose humble beginning was funded by a successful Kickstarter campaign — Voodoo Doughnut serves the coffee brand’s Teodoro’s Italian roast to their beloved patrons. This full-bodied, medium-dark blend’s flavor is expressed with cocoa, roasted nuts, hints of woody spice, caramel, and a gentle touch of almond. In the spirit of transparency, I didn’t know they offered coffee until fairly recently. Once I discovered this, I rushed over to give it a try and I have to say I was impressed by how much I enjoyed it. If you’re like me and prefer a little extra flair to your brew, I’ll always suggest adding a splash of half and half or creamer and opt for the addition of vanilla, hazelnut, or caramel for 79 cents. However, if you take yours black, it’s still a smooth sip that will do the trick that I’m sure you’ll enjoy. It is considered Nosso Familia’s “crowd pleaser” after all.

Toothsome’s Chocolate Emporium

Located in:
– Universal CityWalk, between Islands of Adventure and Hard Rock Live
Coffee price range: $14.00 – $15.00 plus tax

Toothsome’s is famous for two things: a passion for chocolate, and some impressive milkshakes. With that said, the latter’s menu has something that every coffee lover can dig into — the Espresso Buzzzz! To make this incredible delectable, the establishment’s confectioners fill one of their signature souvenir jars to the brim with a blend of coffee ice cream and fresh-brewed espresso. They then top and rim the jar with a chocolate mousse whip, chocolate-covered espresso beans, four biscotti cookies, and a single maraschino cherry. It’s almost too beautiful to consume, but consume you will! While it does lean more into the dessert category, it’s a sweet treat that will still provide a perk to your step and serve as the perfect way to treat yourself. Although you’ll have to grab yourself a reservation and table for this last one, it’s more than worth the effort. Toothsome’s full-service restaurant also has the Chocolate Coffee Banana, which is a cocktail made up of Caribe Club banana rum, Galliano Ristretto coffee liqueur, Faretti chocolate, soy milk, and chocolate bitters — a perfect potable for a post-meal-pick-me-up.

We hope this list makes your future coffee pursuits at Universal Orlando Resort easier! With so many options to choose from, you’re sure to find something to enjoy and keep the fun going.

Universal Orlando’s roller coasters: What are the differences? https://orlandoinformer.com/blog/universal-orlando-roller-coasters-differences/ Thu, 15 Apr 2021 13:45:12 +0000 https://orlandoinformer.com/?p=130195 We break down each of Universal Orlando's six roller coasters, letting you know what to expect in terms of story and thrills.

]]>
Whether you’re a Ravenclaw-esque enthusiast like myself who heartily ingests any and all ride factoids or someone braving their first time on a roller coaster, it’s good to have some prior knowledge on the subject. Naturally, coasters are something of an artificial species – they come in all different sizes, themes, and classes. One could even say that every theme park doubles as its own “Kingdom Animalia,” of sorts.

This is definitely true at Universal Orlando, which offers a class of roller coaster to pair perfectly with each of its unique guests. And given the soon-to-arrive Jurassic World VelociCoaster, we at Orlando Informer found ourselves inspired to take stock and get to better know the resort’s roster of amazing coaster experiences.

The following is our accounting of each ride. Although we could – and probably would – speak endlessly on this subject, we’ve simplified the descriptions to fast-facts first and a quick excerpt afterwards, which will help provide additional details and information. And for anyone unfamiliar or looking to take that next step in his or her roller-coaster endeavors, we’ve also categorized the list by intensity, to show which attractions you can consider “entry level” to – well, you get the picture.

Entry-level roller coasters at Universal Orlando

Woody Woodpecker’s Nuthouse Coaster

Woody Woodpecker’s Nuthouse Coaster at Universal Studios Florida
 • Location: Woody Woodpecker’s KidZone, Universal Studios Florida
 • Height requirement: 36 inches (supervising companion for those under 48)
 • Max speed: 21.7 mph
 • Approximate duration: 1:00

Woody Woodpecker’s Nuthouse Coaster holds the double honors of being Universal Orlando’s very first roller coaster as well as the attraction that helped officially launch Woody Woodpecker’s KidZone back in 1999. It is, of course, designed for families and has the interest of the younger crowd in mind. This ride favors very vibrant decor and an easy-to-follow story of a wild and entertaining train ride around a literal nut factory with Woody as your “host.”

Despite its wacky name and what you may expect from the titular woodpecker, Nuthouse Coaster’s pace isn’t very fast, and the track stays mostly low to the ground, with just enough tight turns and twists to entertain you. As long as no one in your family is easily scared or squeamish, this would prove to be a fun way to start or end your day.

Flight of the Hippogriff

Flight of the Hippogriff at Islands of Adventure
Flight of the Hippogriff at Islands of Adventure

After originally starting off life as Flight of the Unicorn, this kiddie coaster got swept up in the Harry Potter makeover and was reborn as Flight of the Hippogriff in 2010. The attraction’s new concept revolves around a lesson in riding Buckbeak the hippogriff by Professor Hagrid, who utilizes wicker replicas (aka your ride vehicles). After boarding them and getting settled under the lap bar, guests are encouraged to bow to an animatronic hippogriff, as is customary with these magical creatures.

The overall experience is fun and family friendly, as the ride doesn’t go very fast or feature any inversions. Still, although Flight of the Hippogriff isn’t scary by any means, some guest feedback suggests that the little ones may find it just a wee intense at first, due to how high it climbs and how quickly it reaches its top speed. With that said, however, Hippogriff does offer a great mid-ride look at Hogwarts Castle and at Hagrid’s hut (which can be seen in even greater detail in Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure), which makes it worth a try.

Easy roller coasters at Universal Orlando

Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit

Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit at Universal Studios Florida
Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit at Universal Studios Florida
 • Location: Production Central, Universal Studios Florida
 • Height requirement: 51 inches
 • Max speed: 65 mph
 • Approximate duration: 1:23

Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit boasts a fun, music-centric theme and a great soundtrack for guests to choose from that features an accessible “secret list.” If you get good enough at the selection process, this could allow you to set a different tone for each time you ride.

While this is one of the faster coasters on Universal Orlando Resort property, I always suggest Rockit as anyone’s “first big roller coaster.” Yes, that initial 167-foot vertical lift seems very daunting, but it’s easily the scariest part of this attraction; once you’re over that steep hill, you’re in for a fun, smooth ride. Sure, its top speed is just short of The Incredible Hulk Coaster‘s maximum pace, but you’d never guess it, and Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit doesn’t actually ever go upside-down. This allows for a happy medium of achieving easy thrills while testing the waters of the more intense coaster experiences in the parks.

Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure

The ride vehicles of Hagrid's Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure
Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure at Islands of Adventure

Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure not only challenges you to say its name three times fast, but it also serves as Universal’s first official half-giant step into the realm of “story coasters,” roller coasters which endeavor to tell a narrative during the ride itself (and not just in the queue). Rubeus Hagrid takes center stage as your host, leading you on a field trip deep within the Forbidden Forest to learn more about the Wizarding World’s magical creatures. Guests board cars that are designed after Hagrid’s motorbike, complete with a main seat and sidecar, both of which have lap-bar restraints to keep you safe. True to everything Harry Potter, the queue is highly detailed, and the ride portion boasts some great animatronics that include many fantastic beasts, as well as one of the professor himself.

If Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit looks too intimidating, this would be an excellent alternative as an introductory coaster – not only won’t you find any inversions, but it also isn’t terribly fast or intense. With that said – and without spoiling anything – readers will want to make note of a backwards portion (in which the motorbike “breaks down in mid-air,” as it’s want to do) and a very sudden drop straight down.

Moderate roller coasters at Universal Orlando

Revenge of the Mummy

Revenge of the Mummy at Universal Studios Florida
Revenge of the Mummy at Universal Studios Florida (image: Universal)
 • Location: New York, Universal Studios Florida
 • Height requirement: 48 inches
 • Max speed: 40 mph
 • Approximate duration: 2:57

We at Orlando Informer hold no secrets about our love for this attraction, as we’ve covered it extensively.

Put simply, Revenge of the Mummy takes place behind the scenes of a fictitious sequel to The Mummy, starring a coffee-deprived Brendan Fraser – a production which eventually goes horribly wrong. As you traverse the queue, you’ll notice the scenery blend from a movie shoot to a 1940s Egyptian-tomb excavation, which culminates in a boarding area with lap bar-equipped vehicles that have been designed as mine carts to fit the theme.

It’s certainly not Universal’s fastest coaster, but what it lacks in speed, it makes up for in thrills. If pressured, it’s hard to pinpoint the most intense part of the ride experience, as there are so many; instead, it’s better to say that the only reason Revenge of the Mummy is categorized as “moderate” is due to the ride never going upside-down. If you do choose to venture onto this attraction, there’s a ton of fun and humor you’ll be rewarded with.

Intense roller coasters at Universal Orlando

The Incredible Hulk Coaster

The Incredible Hulk Coaster
The Incredible Hulk Coaster at Islands of Adventure
 • Location: Marvel Super Hero Island, Islands of Adventure
 • Height requirement: 48 inches
 • Max speed: 67 mph
 • Approximate duration: 2:15

The Incredible Hulk Coaster is traditionally a must-do for anyone visiting Universal Orlando. In its current iteration, which debuted in 2016, guests take the role of “experimental test subjects” for General Thaddeus Ross – his latest attempt to take down the menace that is the Hulk. After winding through the military lab, riders board the roller coaster’s sleek, green vehicles, which come equipped with shoulder restraints and seat belts.

After being brought into what’s meant to be the center of a gamma core, passengers are launched into the actual ride experience, accompanied by the Hulk’s roar and the musical stylings of Fall Out Boy’s Patrick Stump. The track involves an exciting flurry of twists and loops, which you smash through nonstop at top speed, making it an immensely thrilling ride and easily the resort’s most intense coaster.

Jurassic World VelociCoaster: 4 things we’re most excited about https://orlandoinformer.com/blog/jurassic-world-velocicoaster-4-things-most-excited-about/ Wed, 10 Mar 2021 20:50:25 +0000 https://orlandoinformer.com/?p=129143 From its record-breaking thrills to the narrative possibilities, see what has us most hyped about Universal Orlando's new roller coaster.

The post Jurassic World VelociCoaster: 4 things we’re most excited about appeared first on Orlando Informer.

]]>
Despite the effects of a lingering pandemic, Universal has done their best to maintain their word to consistently deliver brand-new, world-class attractions at their parks. With the upcoming addition of Jurassic World Velocicoaster, we have a new roller coaster making its nest at the Jurassic Park section of Islands of Adventure. And it’s not just that – with it comes a long-awaited update to align the theme in the Orlando neck of the woods with the cult series’s Jurassic World sub-franchise.

Although this is the only new addition to Universal Orlando Resort that we can expect this year, that doesn’t mean there isn’t plenty for us hens to gab about. It’s a given that what’s sure to be a star ride already has us wild-eyed and nipping at the heel, so what better way to satiate some of our anticipation than to talk about what’s exciting us most?

Hold onto your butts, readers.

1. Jurassic World theming and representation

Jurassic World cast
The cast of Jurassic World will be making an appearance in VelociCoaster

One could state that the first step towards representing Jurassic World began with the popular Raptor Encounter at Islands of Adventure, and I would agree. When it was relocated during VelociCoaster’s construction, the theming that matched the original franchise was retired and updated so the meet-and-greet’s marquee now sports stylings of blue-and-white font on a slate-colored habitat cage – the signature of the Jurassic World sub-series. (And a few years before this, the generic raptor was switched out with the World pack leader herself, Blue.) But as exciting as the minor renovation was, this small taste left fans like myself wanting more, and the powers that be knew they’d have to deliver. Fortunately, just like life, they found a way.

In preparation for the ride, its creators teamed up with the Jurassic World filmmakers to match with the source material down to the finest detail, sparing no expense. We can see this from the attraction’s marquee and housing, what’s visible of the raptor paddock, and the coaster vehicles’ stylings, as well as the surrounding horticulture and signage. Considering what information about the experience has been released, we can not only expect some fun dangers along the way (seriously, we’re racing with fully grown raptors here – have you seen the movies?), but to cross paths with Owen Grady and others from the cinematic hit – the attraction has been given its own original story set within the characters’ world. This provides us with a well-deserved, dino-sized step towards proper Jurassic World representation on the East Coast.

2. The best features of two roller coasters built into one

Jurassic World VelociCoaster sunset
A beautiful shot of a beautiful hill

Jurassic World VelociCoaster’s tagline, “A new species of coaster,” is a simple and nearly perfect description of what to expect. This attraction is essentially a hybrid of two different types of roller coasters, and one thing’s for sure: there isn’t much like it. During the guests’ journey, they’ll be subjected to two intense launches, with the first racing from zero to 50 miles per hour in three seconds (at the beginning of the ride), and a later boost launching the vehicles from 40 to 70 miles per hour in just 2.4 seconds. They’ll also be subjected to four inversions, multiple zero-gravity stalls that promise a total of 12 seconds’ worth of air time, a one-of-a-kind 360-degree barrel roll, and that already-infamous 155-foot-tall top hat containing an 80-degree, 152-foot drop!

Wow! My heart’s pounding just typing all of that out. The possibility of catching a view of Islands of Adventure from 155 feet above the park’s lagoon already had me sold, but as a fan of thrill rides, I’m psyched to experience the transitions of everything Universal has packed into this “frankencoaster.” Can you imagine how exhilarating it’ll be to catch that much air time and spin that close to the water? I know I’ll do everything in my power to be a part of any soft openings we may be graced with. And if you weren’t already sold, VelociCoaster’s features should most certainly have everyone’s ears perked, at the least.

3. A record-setting attraction

Jurassic World VelociCoaster's mammoth drop
That mammoth drop, in close (and scary!) detail

Universal Orlando’s newest coaster is set to break some records, and not just in the resort’s book – but let’s not jump ahead here.

Focusing solely on Universal itself, VelociCoaster is set to have the steepest coaster drop in either theme park due to the aforementioned top hat’s 80-degree descent. For those crunching the numbers with me, that title is currently held by Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit in Universal Studios Florida. By comparison, the new Jurassic World attraction’s 155-foot peak may not be as high, but it is still 10 degrees steeper than Rockit’s own 90-degree descent. And shifting over to the top-speed category, VelociCoaster’s latter launch reaches the ride’s maximum pace of 70 miles per hour. This feat crowns it as king of this realm and dethrones The Incredible Hulk Coaster, which maxes out at 67 mph.

Jurassic World VelociCoaster’s domination over its peers doesn’t stop there, either. Broadening our scope to the state level, the prehistoric thriller’s maximum velocity will simultaneously make it both the king of top speed at Universal Orlando and the fastest launch-type coaster in all of Florida. Cheetah Hunt in Busch Gardens Tampa Bay has held that reign proudly since 2011, with launches of zero to 30 miles per hour in 1.8 seconds, and a subsequent boost of 38 to 60 mph in two seconds.

4. Night rides and trailblazing possibilities

Jurassic World VelociCoaster nighttime with lights
This will be one hell of an experience at night

While it may seem that everything’s been talked about, there’s arguably still more yet to salivate over.

Guests looking to add some oomph to their ride experience could take VelociCoaster for a spin at night, as you would Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit or The Incredible Hulk Coaster. The aesthetics of the vehicles’ blue lighting already beckon you to do so, and this could potentially enhance your Jurassic enjoyment. Doubling up on the attraction in this way could intensify not only the characteristics of the ride’s track, but any possible raptor encounters, as well. I’ll surely be doing this, as it would make for some truly great memories.

As much as riding this in any fashion should excite you, what has us most hyped is its potential influence on the future. If you’re raising an eyebrow or tilting your head, allow me to elaborate: it’s the industry’s consensus that theme-park history should have its eye on VelociCoaster. This hair-raising adventure into the realm of Jurassic World is set to incorporate some heavy theming into the attraction’s overall experience. Exactly how cohesive the ride portion will be has yet to be seen, but Universal has already successfully dipped its proverbial toes into the deeply themed waters of “story coasters” with Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure and, technically, Revenge of the Mummy. If the past is any indication here, I wouldn’t be surprised to see Universal’s designers use what they’ve learned thus far to revolutionize the industry yet again by weaving an intricate, original tale – similar in depth to attractions such as E.T. Adventure or The Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man – into VelociCoaster’s already-innovative and intense nature.

Even if this doesn’t come to pass, Jurassic World VelociCoaster still gives us a lot to look forward to, and I’m sure it’ll have the Orlando Informer – and Owen Grady – Seal of Approval.

It is a time in our lives unlike any other – the places we go to for an escape and to create precious memories are currently unavailable to us. But, as Professor Dumbledore once said, “Happiness can be found in the darkest of times, if one only remembers to turn on the light.”

In recent weeks, we’ve seen theme-park fans recreating their favorite experiences in their own home. The creativity is inspiring. Whether you go all out and recreate your favorite rides or keep things simple by whipping up a treat, we’ve rounded up some of the more memorable ways to bring a little Universal Orlando Resort excitement to your own home.

Recipes and tips for Universal Orlando treats at home

DIY Butterbeer cookies
DIY Butterbeer cookies

The strongest sense linked to memory is smell, so fill your home with the familiar scents and flavors of some of your favorite Universal treats.

Of course, everyone’s favorite delight at Universal Orlando is Butterbeer, which comes in many forms (you can get a full list here). If you want to make your own Butterbeer beverage at home, we have a few options for you to try, and you can also bake your own Butterbeer cookies with this recipe.

Another beloved treat comes to us during Halloween Horror Nights – Pizza Fries! These are pretty easy to make at home. Cook up some crinkle-cut French fries, then layer them with tomato sauce, shredded cheese, and some pepperoni slices. Bake together in the oven until the cheese gets melty and the pepperoni gets a little crisp, and you’re good to go. You might want to dim the lights and put on some spooky music to really recreate the Pizza Fries experience.

Unfortunately, Mardi Gras at Universal Orlando was cut short this year. Consider browsing our list of specialty food and drinks that was served at 2020’s annual event and see if you can whip some up at home. Then browse the concert lineup and listen to some music from your favorite artist. If you’ve got beads of your own, then there’s no shame in making a homemade Mardi Gras parade, too!

Now, if you want some official tastes of the resort that you can make at home, then check these out: the good folks at Universal published a recipe for the Confetti Milkshake from Toothsome Chocolate Emporium, the Big Apple Grilled Cheese from Today Cafe, the Irish Soda Bread from Finnegan’s Bar & Grill, and the Green Eggs & Ham Tots from (where else?) Green Eggs and Ham Cafe. Enjoy!

Books and movies inspired by Universal Orlando

Matt Damon as Jason Bourne
Bourne is waiting for you in Orlando… and at home

If you’re like me, as fun as all this sounds, you just don’t have the time right now to recreate special foods at home (I have a toddler at home who’s no longer in childcare). So keeping the Universal Orlando spirit alive in our house is better through simpler means, like novels and films.

Although I haven’t done so yet, I fully intend to revisit the original Harry Potter books, as they truly are some of the best novels to escape into. Of course, with a child, we read a lot of Dr. Seuss, and any time we read a book together, I think about how great Seuss Landing is. For some thrill, Michael Crichton’s Jurassic Park is a must-read. And comic book fans can get the feeling of being at Marvel Super Hero Island by jumping into some classic Marvel Comics titles.

The list of films that inspire Universal Orlando attractions is almost overwhelming. For a family movie night, you can’t go wrong with E.T. or any of the Despicable Me or Shrek installments. If your family is full of Harry Potter fans, then a movie marathon may be in order – and the Butterbeer recipes I mentioned earlier could come in handy. Big blockbusters like the 1999 version of The Mummy or 2007’s Transformers easily make you feel like you’re back in Universal Studios Florida. Or getting to know the Jason Bourne movies might be a good idea as we get ready to welcome the new stunt show.

Other inspirations

Butterbeer pick two meme
You can only pick two…

There are other ways to enjoy the comfort and excitement that Universal Orlando Resort brings. Over at our Universal Community Facebook group, we’ve seen some wonderful ideas. One family, for example, recreated their entire vacation they had planned, including staying at Royal Pacific Resort – they wore leis and drank out of souvenir cups as they recreated rides and other experiences. (If you aren’t already a part of this Facebook community, it’s a great place for chatting with other fans and getting answers to lots of vacation-planning questions – activities that may mean more now than ever before.)

If you’re active on social media, like Twitter or Instagram, check out #HomemadeUniversal or #UniversalAtHome for more inspiration. And be sure to post your own at-home creations! While you’re there, you can also chime in on such tough questions as which set of attractions you’d chose for the rest of time or which two versions of Butterbeer would you select if all the others were vanquished?

If you’re still missing the parks, don’t worry – we’ll keep you posted on all the closing (and reopening!) news here.

Staying connected on social media and creating some homemade Universal Orlando experiences are wonderful ways to come together as we each face this difficult time, and you can do that with 100,000+ other Universal fans over at our OI Community Facebook group.

I’ll be the first to admit, I just did not see the big deal about Hello Kitty and the other Sanrio characters. Then I set foot in the brand new Hello Kitty store at Universal Studios Florida and I think I get it now…. sort of. To the dismay of long time Universal fans, the I Love Lucy Tribute walk through attraction took its final bow in 2015. In its place a bright and bubbly shop brimming with all kinds of cuteness has now opened its doors.

On the day of my visit, the first day of operations for this shop, there was all manner of management and Team Members gathering in every corner of the shop admiring their new domain. I entered through the smaller entrance at the far right end of the building. The shop sits at the corner of the Hollywood area and Production Central.

Before you even enter you are sure to notice the brightly colored window displays. I also noticed that the sign on the building had yet to be installed. I love visiting something when it first opens. You’ll never see a ride, attraction, shop, or restaurant in that same state as when it first opens and welcomes guests for the first time.

Outside of the far right entrance is a fun little detail. There used to be a large I Love Lucy sign. When it was removed a large rectangular hole needed to be filled, so in true Hollywood style, Hello Kitty’s autograph was scrolled into a concrete block. It’s a cute touch for anyone who notices it.

Once inside the bright colors and circular curvy shapes hit like a wall of happiness. I’m a pretty upbeat person, but I think if I stayed in this store long enough I’d get a migraine. The merchandise offers a good selection for little kids, preteens, and adults that are young at heart. It is very apparel focused, but you’ll also find toys and a few housewares, especially cups and mugs.

So far there is no merchandise that is exclusive to Universal. Everything on the shelf is something you could find at any other Sanrio store or online. However, I spoke with a manager and he said that Universal Orlando and Hello Kitty mashup merchandise is in development. I continued the inquisition and asked if he knew if the awesome Universal Hello Kitty mashup movie posters would be used as inspiration and he gave me every indication to believe this may be the case.

The prices are on the high side, though nothing really out of the ordinary for a theme park store. Especially when you consider that both Universal and Sanrio need to make money off this stuff.

I was surprised to find a case full of Hello Kitty confections at the back of the store. These items are brightly decorated and absolutely adorable. I can see these treats being popular with any fan of Hello Kitty. Prices range from $4 for fudge (the flavor variety is impressive) to $10 for gourmet apples. Each piece of fudge has an adorable Hello Kitty style red bow, simply precious, almost too cute to eat….. almost.

Overall, I can see this store being popular and a big money maker for Universal. The whole space is adorable, friendly, welcoming, and upbeat. I can’t wait to see what the Universal + Hello Kitty merchandise looks like!
