Step right up, folks, for a whimsical treat! Circus McGurkus Cafe Stoo-pendous is back – oh, what a feat! After months behind curtains, away from all eyes, they have jazzed up their menu, a delightful surprise!

Islands of Adventure’s Circus McGurkus Cafe Stoo-pendous has opened its doors after refurbishment, revealing a menu bursting with creativity and flavor. Entrees include a poke bowl, meatball cone, chicken & biscuits, and more – and that’s just the beginning! Pair your meal with new side options like garlic popcorn and desserts such as Green Eggs and Ham Chocolate Cheesecake for the grand finale.

Let’s take a closer look at the bites that await you under the big top!

Circus McGurkus Cafe Stoo-pendous Chicken & Biscuit

Chicken & Biscuit from Circus McGurkus Cafe Stoo-pendous
Chicken & Biscuit from Circus McGurkus Cafe Stoo-pendous

First on our list is the Chicken & Biscuit, a classic Southern dish reimagined with a whimsical carnival twist. The biscuit, uniquely shaped like a circus peanut, is generously drizzled with hot honey, adding a sweet and spicy dimension. While we noted the biscuit leans more towards a waffle in texture, it remains exceptionally delicious and one of our top plates.

Circus McGurkus Cafe Stoo-pendous Red Fish, Blue Fish, Poke Bowl

Red Fish, Blue Fish, Poke Bowl at Circus McGurkus Cafe Stoo-pendous

Dig into this delicious poke bowl crafted with a mix of ingredients that includes blue glass noodles, ahi tuna, cucumber, edamame, and mango, with a splash of yuzu-honey sauce, finished with a sprinkle of furikake seasoning.

The sweet mango pieces add a tropical flair. At the same time, a drizzle of yuzu-honey dressing brings a citrusy sweetness and a mesmerizing color change as you pour this sauce over the noodles, adding an element of entertainment to your meal. This poke bowl is recommended for those who appreciate a sweet nuance to their savory dishes, making it a standout choice for an entrée.

Circus McGurkus Cafe Stoo-pendous Roast Beast Sandwich

This seasonal Who-liday special is now a permanent fixture on the Circus McGurkus Cafe Stoo-pendous menu. This mouthwatering creation combines a savory mushroom meatloaf with thinly shaved ribeye, rich cheddar cheese, and crispy onions, all assembled on a robust pretzel bun. What sets the Roast Beast Sandwich apart, beyond its delectable blend of fixings, is the whimsical touch of a mini sandwich placed atop the main bun. This playful garnish not only enhances the visual presentation, but also echoes the creativity and fun that the world of Dr. Seuss is known for.

Circus McGurkus Cafe Stoo-pendous Tamed Dragon Salad

Tamed Dragon Salad at Circus McGurkus Cafe Stoo-pendous
Tamed Dragon Salad from Circus McGurkus Cafe Stoo-pendous

This salad is a harmonious blend of nutritious and flavorful ingredients, ideal for a fulfilling lunch on a warm Florida day. The Tamed Dragon Salad is composed of red dragon fruit, red quinoa, raspberries, mandarin oranges, almonds, baby spinach, and cucumber with a guava vinaigrette.

Including red quinoa ensures that the dish is hearty and capable of keeping you satiated for extended periods. This base is skillfully complemented by the sweetness and acidity of raspberries, mandarin oranges, and dragon fruit, with the guava vinaigrette adding a tropical zest that ties all the flavors together. The Tamed Dragon Salad is perfect for those seeking a light yet fulfilling meal.

Circus McGurkus Cafe Stoo-pendous Magician Meatball Cone

You notice that the trend with Circus McGurkus Cafe Stoo-pendous’ revamped menu values the presentation of its dishes. This Magician Meatball Cone is no different, as this plate features meatballs and marinara cavatappi in a garlic bread cone. A vegan variation is available that includes plant-based Gardein meatballs as a substitute.

Although the garlic bread cone was somewhat tougher than ideal, this did not detract from the overall enjoyment and delivered a fun spin on the traditional pairing of meatballs and marinara.

Circus McGurkus Cafe Stoo-pendous “Popcorn” Shrimp Box

“Popcorn” Shrimp Box from Circus McGurkus Cafe Stoo-pendous
“Popcorn” Shrimp Box from Circus McGurkus Cafe Stoo-pendous

Circus McGurkus Cafe Stoo-pendous brings a literal twist to the concept of popcorn shrimp, serving up a fun mix of crispy shrimp, popcorn, and curly fries. Although the dish was initially enjoyable, the uniformity in garlic seasoning across its components may become somewhat overpowering over time.

Circus McGurkus Cafe Stoo-pendous The Big Top Burger

The Big Top Burger from Circus McGurkus Cafe Stoo-pendous
The Big Top Burger from Circus McGurkus Cafe Stoo-pendous

No, this isn’t one of Spongebob’s “Pretty Patties.” It’s The Big Top Burger, featuring a fresh beef patty with an excellent char, providing a rich, smoky taste and stacked with sharp cheddar cheese, crisp lettuce, fresh tomato, and onion. These classic burger toppings are assembled on a red brioche bun and served alongside curly fries.

The Big Top Burger is celebrated not just for its bold appearance but also for its classic flavors and the quality of its components, making it go beyond a standard theme park meal and a noteworthy choice for burger enthusiasts.

Circus McGurkus Cafe Stoo-pendous Pizza Pasta

Pizza Pasta from Circus McGurkus Cafe Stoo-pendous
Pizza Pasta from Circus McGurkus Cafe Stoo-pendous

The standout highlight of the updated menu at Circus McGurkus Cafe Stoo-pendous is undoubtedly the Pizza Pasta. While the concept might initially seem unconventional, it expertly blends the quintessential elements of beloved childhood dishes. This culinary creation features cavatappi pasta enveloped in rich, baked macaroni and cheese, adorned with savory pepperoni, and smothered in a classic marinara sauce. For those preferring a vegetarian option, the Pizza Pasta can be served without the pepperoni, maintaining its delicious flavor profile.

Circus McGurkus Cafe Stoo-pendous Green Eggs and Ham Chocolate Cheesecake

Green Eggs and Ham Chocolate Cheesecake from Circus McGurkus Cafe Stoo-pendous
Green Eggs and Ham Chocolate Cheesecake from Circus McGurkus Cafe Stoo-pendous

Let’s satisfy that sweet tooth with a serving of Green Eggs and Ham Chocolate Cheesecake. This dessert is a chocolate lover’s dream, deviating from Sam-I-Am’s iconic dish. Encased within a rich chocolate shell, you’ll discover a luscious chocolate cheesecake resting on a decadent chocolate crust. Topping off this exquisite creation is a chocolate “egg,” a nostalgic nod to the beloved children’s book.

Biting into this sweet treat, we noticed its texture leaned more toward that of a mousse than the denser consistency traditionally associated with cheesecake. Despite this deviation from expectation, the dessert remains thoroughly delicious, offering a satisfying finale to a meal under the circus tent.

Circus McGurkus Cafe Stoo-pendous Caramel Popcorn Cupcake

Popcorn makes another appearance on the new Circus McGurkus Cafe Stoo-pendous menu, but this time appealing to those with a penchant for sweetness. The dessert comprises a blend of caramel popcorn and buttercream icing, all generously drizzled with caramel and served in a mini popcorn bucket. This combination of sweet caramel and rich, creamy buttercream topped with crunchy popcorn provides an indulgent and memorable multi-textural sensation.

Overall, the upgrades made to Circus McGurkus Cafe Stoo-pendous are worth a visit during your time at Islands of Adventure. This dish transcends the typical theme park fare, offering unique options beyond burgers and chicken tenders.

So gather ’round, friends, both big and small. Circus McGurkus is open – come one, come all! Discover the marvels that await on each plate in a dining adventure that’s truly first-rate!

February is a month of many celebrations, and among the most cherished is the holiday of love and romance — Valentine’s Day. Orlando offers many options for residents and visitors to choose from, and Universal Orlando Resort is no different. The choices are seemingly endless, ranging from a vibrant entertainment district and award-winning theme parks to the luxurious resort hotels.

This begs the question of how one makes a perfect Valentine’s Day at Universal Orlando. You’re always welcome to explore at your own pace here. However, if you’re looking for inspiration, we’ve compiled a list of our favorite activities and destinations throughout Universal Orlando Resort to help guide your Valentine’s Day celebration. Starting, of course, at the epicenter of awesome – Universal CityWalk.

Celebrating Valentine’s Day at Universal CityWalk

Universal CityWalk has plenty of ways to enjoy Valentine’s Day, with several savory restaurants and nightlife activities to entertain you and yours. The best part? Parking is free after 6 PM on most evenings!

The classic dinner and a movie date

Antojitos Authentic Mexican Food at Universal CityWalk
Antojitos Authentic Mexican Food at Universal CityWalk

What’s more classically romantic than a meal and a movie? Our suggestion here would be Antojito’s Authentic Mexican Food since they have an exceptional menu and some of our favorite drinks.

Afterward, you can catch the latest flick at Universal Cinemark. Their plush luxury loungers and spacious theaters provide an outstanding viewing experience, making it an ideal choice if you’re looking to impress your date. Opting for Cinemark’s XD auditorium enhances your movie further with wall-to-wall screens, premium sound, and state-of-the-art projectors.

Split a milkshake at Toothsome’s Chocolate Emporium or Cowfish Sushi Burger Bar

Florida has warm, sunny days aplenty, and few things compliment them like a creamy milkshake. Universal CityWalk offers two excellent choices to grab a seat and a shake with your beau.

The Cowfish Sushi Burger Bar
The Cowfish Sushi Burger Bar
The Cowfish Sushi Burger Bar
The Cowfish Sushi Burger Bar

The Cowfish Sushi Burger Bar isn’t just about their infamous burger and sushi fusions (or “burgushi” for those unfamiliar). They also offer premium spiked milkshakes like The King Lives, an alcohol-infused peanut banana shake that is delightful and worth a try.

Milkshakes from Toothsome Chocolate Emporium
The Toothsome Chocolate Emporium & Savory Feast Kitchen’s legendary milkshakes

Of course, you can’t talk about milkshakes at Universal CityWalk and leave out The Toothsome Chocolate Emporium & Savory Feast Kitchen. The restaurant is renowned for its delightful dinner offerings, yet Jacques’ Specialty Milkshakes are a popular choice, generous enough for sharing. With 13 unique and equally impressive flavors available, our top recommendation is the Espresso Buzzzz.

Take your date out for the nightlife at CityWalk

Dining and shopping are only a portion of what Universal CityWalk is known for. The entertainment complex also offers a slew of nightlife activities.

Invaders From Planet Putt at Hollywood Drive-In Golf

The Haunting of Ghostly Greens at Hollywood Drive-In Golf
The Haunting of Ghostly Greens at Hollywood Drive-In Golf

Playing a round of putt-putt at Hollywood Drive-In Golf is always a fun and cute suggestion, inviting you and your partner to navigate an 18-hole mini-golf course inspired by cinema. Choose from an epic sci-fi adventure in Invaders From Planet Putt, or opt for The Haunting of Ghostly Greens, which offers an eerie stroll through a haunted mansion’s garden cemetery. Tackle both courses for a full double-feature film scenario!

CityWalk's Rising Star
CityWalk’s Rising Star

Additionally, Universal’s Rising Star offers a memorable opportunity to sing your heart out alongside a live band, dedicating your performance to your date.

Universal's Great Movie Escape
Universal’s Great Movie Escape

If you’re a geeky couple like this writer and his wife, you can opt for Universal’s Great Movie Escape, an escape room like no other! CityWalk’s latest addition features two adventure rooms to test your mettle based on popular Universal intellectual properties: Jurassic World: Escape and Back to the Future: OUTATIME.

Celebrating Valentine’s Day at Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure

If you want to make a memorable impact with your date, a day at Universal Orlando Resort’s world-class theme parks is the way to go. The way you explore and enjoy the parks can differ based on your personality or even your Hogwarts House, like your Ravenclaw alumnus writer. Below are several suggestions tailored to cater to these diverse preferences.

Sweep your sweetheart off their feet with a visit to Universal Orlando Resort’s theme parks, offering the gift of joy and togetherness at a fraction of the cost. Take advantage of discounted admission from Orlando Informer to create unforgettable memories this Valentine’s Day.

Alternatively, Illumination’s Villain-Con Minion Blast offers an innovative experience to keep your date interesting. Before entering the attraction, guests can collaborate to create their Minion profiles and customize their blasters via the Universal Orlando app. Once they have, they can select a mission or compete to see who can get the highest score and the most collectibles throughout the ride. As Illumination’s Villain-Con Minion Blast is part of Illumination’s Minion Land, you and your date can also enjoy a meal at Illumination’s Minion Cafe, rounding off the experience with a shared bite.

Finding romance through thrills and excitement

Indulging in a few rides is a must when you’re at one of Universal Orlando’s world-class theme parks. Following this writer’s favorite selections is highly recommended to impress your significant other or create lasting memories. Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure is a top contender. Few things are cuter than sharing a motorcycle and sidecar as you go on an academic monster hunt with your date.

The Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man at Islands of Adventure
The Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man at Islands of Adventure

The Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man is another excellent selection. After transporting into the comic book adventures of everyone’s favorite wall-crawler, grab hold of one another for an edge-of-your-seat thrill ride as Spidey battles the Sinister Syndicate.

Bond over a show and find a quiet moment

Universal Orlando's Horror Make-Up Show
Universal Orlando’s Horror Make-Up Show

Some of the best opportunities for romance come from the smaller moments, and Universal Orlando Resort offers more than you may realize. Simple things like seeing Universal Orlando’s Horror Make-Up Show or The Bourne Stuntacular can provide the perfect bonding material.

Universal Studios Florida’s Central Park is perfect for enjoying the skyline, featuring lakeside seating away from the usual bustle of park traffic. Likewise, Islands of Adventure boasts picturesque spots, including panoramic views at Marvel Super Hero Island and the tranquil walkways near Me Ship, the Olive in Toon Lagoon. These locations provide perfect opportunities to relax and take in the scenery together.

Celebrating Valentine’s Day at the Lowes’ Universal Orlando Resort Hotels

Loews Portofino Bay Harbor Piazza
Loews Portofino Bay Harbor Piazza

While enjoying a date at CityWalk and the Universal Orlando theme parks, a visit to one of the Universal Orlando Hotels is highly recommended. The garden walk that connects Universal CityWalk to Loews Portofino Bay Hotel and Hard Rock Hotel is both leisurely and romantic. This path allows you to enjoy the beauty of floral greenery, bamboo stalks, and waterfront views, providing a serene backdrop for conversation as you stroll.

Enjoy Valentine’s Day dinner at one of the resort hotels

Impressing your date can be as simple as sharing an excellent meal together. Mama Della’s Ristorante is ideal, evoking the warmth and comfort of a home-cooked meal like Nona would prepare. Patrons may even be serenaded by their strolling musicians, adding to the overall ambiance.

Sal's Market Deli at Loews Portofino Bay Hotel

If a lunch date is more your style, Sal’s Market Deli offers some unique options like their ratatouille calzone, which is enough for two to enjoy.

Jakes American Bar at Loews Royal Pacific Resort
Jake’s American Bar at Loews Royal Pacific Resort

Jake’s American Bar at Loews Royal Pacific Resort offers a splendid dinner experience, blending a menu of classic American cuisine within the ambiance of a Pacific island setting. Jake’s adventurous theming is complemented by exceptional service and homemade pretzel rods, burgers, and other delicious offerings.

Make the night special at a seasonal event

Harbor Nights at Loews Portofino Bay Hotel
Harbor Nights at Loews Portofino Bay Hotel

If you want to go the extra mile this Valentine’s Day, the resort hotels have several culinary experiences and other seasonal events. Our favorite is Harbor Nights at Loews Portofino Bay Hotel. It’s a night of jazz, wine, and delicious food pairings. Similarly, Jake’s Beer Dinner at Loews Royal Pacific Resort offers local craft beer pairings with gourmet dishes. Both events happen several times a year and have varying dates, so you’ll want to watch our Universal Orlando Snapshot for when the next event occurs.

The Wantilan Luau at Loews Royal Pacific Resort is an exciting dinner show perfect for a special evening with your significant other. This tropical dinner show transports you on a journey through the cuisine of the Polynesian islands, featuring island music, knife twirlers, and hula and fire dancers. Meanwhile, guests can indulge in an all-you-care-to-enjoy buffet filled with Polynesian specialties, creating a memorable and immersive dining experience.

This separately ticketed event takes place every Saturday, with registration starting at 5:30 PM and seating beginning at 6 PM. Prices can vary with regular seating starting at $45 plus taxes and fees for children ages three to nine and $99 plus taxes and fees for adults. The premium seating option brings you closer to the performance and grants you a souvenir tiki mug. These rates start at $65 plus taxes and fees for children and $119 plus taxes and fees for adults.

During your Universal Orlando Resort vacation, you might find yourself immersed in the excitement and forget to make dining reservations, or perhaps you’re simply seeking something quick and convenient to allow more time for park enjoyment. Fortunately, choosing quick and accessible options doesn’t mean you’ll miss out on exciting and delectable choices!

Universal Studios Florida boasts a variety of outstanding, delicious, and fast quick-service choices to satisfy any craving on the go. Below are some of our favorite spots to check out during your visit!

The Fountain of Fair Fortune

The Fountain of Fair Fortune at The Wizarding World of Harry Potter - Diagon Alley
The Fountain of Fair Fortune at The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Diagon Alley

The moment you walk through the opening brick wall into Diagon Alley, the magic instantly washes over, and you become fully immersed in the Wizarding World of Harry Potter. Between the sights, sounds, and spells, it is easy to forget you are not actually in London.

One of the top tasks usually on the list is to grab one of the famous frozen, cold, or hot Butterbeers.  Most muggles gravitate toward the first Butterbeer vendor they encounter. This is frequently The Hopping Pot, conveniently situated to the right of the entrance, just behind Weasleys’ Wizard Wheezes. Given its prime location, The Hopping Pot often attracts a lively crowd, especially at peak times.

A more efficient strategy is to venture down the alley towards Harry Potter and the Escape from Gringotts and look for The Fountain of Fair Fortune to the right of Florean Fortescue’s Ice-Cream Parlour. This lesser-frequented quick service spot offers Butterbeer in all variations, along with Wizarding World-specific beers and other non-alcoholic beverages, usually with shorter wait times as it is more hidden from the main thoroughfare.

Chez Alcatraz

Chez Alcatraz at Universal Studios Florida

Looking for a delicious and refreshing cocktail to enjoy while strolling the park? Head straight to Fisherman’s Wharf, located in the San Francisco area by the exit of Fast and Furious – Supercharged. This quick-service bar has an excellent variety of specialty drinks and cold beer, which may be served in a fun way (like the Ocean Attack). Once you’ve got your drinks, snap a picture with the great white shark hanging just steps away!

Central Park Crepes

Crepe at Central Park Crepes

This charming crepe stand is a haven for foodies, offering a delectable array of fresh, mouth-watering crepes that promise to tantalize your taste buds. Catering to all preferences, the stand boasts an extensive menu that spans from savory to sweet, ensuring a perfectly crafted crepe for everyone in your group. A rotating seasonal crepe also makes its appearance on the menu to offer a unique taste with every visit.

These crepes are not only a treat to the palate but are also crafted for sharing, making them the perfect, hearty snack to enjoy with friends and family. Located right outside Central Park near Cafe la Bamba, don’t miss this crepe stand on your next trip.

Bumblebee Man’s Taco Truck

Bumblebee Man’s Taco Truck at Universal Studios Florida
Bumblebee Man’s Taco Truck at Universal Studios Florida

Have a hankering for some tacos? The Bumblebee Man’s Taco Truck, nestled in the heart of Springfield, U.S.A.: Home of the Simpsons, arguably serves the best tacos you’ll find at Universal Orlando Resort. Although the menu is compact, it’s packed with incredibly bold and mighty flavors. Diners can choose between chicken, beef, and pork tacos topped with onions and cilantro on a flour tortilla. Paired with a side of chips and salsa, they are perfect to share or keep for yourself (I know I would).

Once you’ve secured your tacos, head behind the truck to find one of the best places to sit and eat, providing amazing views of the park’s lagoon.

Illumination’s Minion Café

Illumination’s Minion Café at Universal Studios Florida

Illumination’s Minion Café, a recent addition to Universal Studios Florida, quickly ranks among my top quick-service choices. Situated in Illumination’s Minion Land, near the park’s entrance, this restaurant offers ample seating spread across three spacious and delightfully themed rooms. The decor is utterly charming, bringing to life the whimsical world of the Minions as they engage in their signature antics of chaos and mayhem.

PX-41 Punch at Illumination's Minion Cafe

For added convenience, all orders are placed through the Universal Orlando Resort app, with your selections delivered directly to your table. The menu features a diverse range of entree options, from noodle bowls to sandwiches, complemented by specialty beverages and desserts. The quality is superb, promising a dining experience that leaves every member of your group completely satisfied.

Don’t have time to sit inside and eat? No worries! Illumination’s Minion Café offers mobile ordering to its pick-up window, which can be found just outside of this location.

Universal Studios Florida Quick Service Honorable Mentions

San Francisco Pastry Company at Universal Studios Florida

TODAY Cafe at Universal Studios Florida

While a few spots didn’t make the top rankings, they certainly deserve an honorable mention for their exceptional offerings.

The San Francisco Pastry Company serves an impressive selection of sandwiches, salads, soups, and desserts. Each option is exquisitely decadent and crafted to gratify your hunger.

Similarly, TODAY Cafe stands out as an excellent quick-service choice. It’s renowned for some fantastic breakfast sandwiches, making it a must-visit for early risers looking for a delicious start to their day.

This Summer will debut the latest quick-service eatery at Universal Studios Florida Illumination’s Minion Cafe. Located in the new Minion Land, it serves as one of the park’s flagship restaurants and is part of the more significant area, which also includes other eateries such as the Bake My Day sweet shop and attractions like Despicable Me: Minion Mayhem and the upcoming Illumination’s Villain Con Minion Blast.

Recently, we made our way to take a gander at the soft opening of Minion Cafe, along with its menu, and we are excited! The cafe’s aesthetics will immerse patrons in the world of everyone’s favorite henchmen, Kevin, Stuart, Bob, and Otto, upon entry with incredibly vibrant Minion-related theming throughout. Within its Dining Room and the Minion Break Room, a quick gaze will catch the sights of Minion-themed tables and easter eggs, such as Stuart’s wrecked guitar from the self-titled Minions (2015) movie. The menu also provides plenty of its own references as guests have the opportunity to actually try Agatha’s Honeymoon Soup from Despicable Me 3 (2017). Even the splattered sauce portion of Mel’s Meatball Mountain’s plating refers to the chaos behind the kitchen doors, unseen by guests. Truly, the restaurant is alive with the spirit of Minions.

Getting into the food, the Minions are serving an eclectic selection of creative fare from bowls, to handhelds, and desserts, which offer a ton to choose from. Frankly, there isn’t a bad meal here, but we know how it can be. Whether it’s a solo guest conquering the parks or families trying to control their own Minion madness, some direction is always appreciated. So here are our favorite menu items from Illumination’s Minion Cafe.

Uncle Dru’s Belly Fillin’ Pork Sandwich

$13.99

Uncle Dru’s Belly Fillin’ Pork Sandwich is a delectable handheld item that represents all the best aspects of a sweet and savory blend of flavors. The pancetta is slow-roasted to perfection, and its accompaniment with the sweet apple butter brings a wonderfully balanced taste. This played very well with the chimichurri which helped round out the sandwich. The pairing of crispy plantain strips brings an extra sweet, fruity crunch to the dish while also remaining true to the Minion theme.

This is easily our favorite item on the menu as it’s delicious, filling, and different from anything else you can find within the parks. To boot, it’s one of the best things you can find at Universal Orlando Resort and, if we may be so bold, this may be the best sandwich of its kind in Orlando. Of course, this is humbly stated as everyone is entitled to what they like, but if you must make a choice, let this be the one you make when visiting the parks.

Carl’s Crispy Cauliflower

$14.99

This entree bowl features cauliflower florets at its center stage and proves that vegetables can be the star of any show. They’re deep-fried to perfection and are accompanied by a sweet and spicy chili dipping sauce, which helps add some extra flare to the meal. This takes place alongside blue coconut sticky rice, cilantro-seasoned edamame, and Thai cucumbers which balance the savory, spicy play with some sweet freshness and welcomed texture. The cucumbers also double as a small side and a palette cleanser for anyone wishing to experience each item wholly.

Overall, the combination of the fried cauliflower florets, sticky rice, and choice of vegetables make for an enjoyable Asian-inspired dish. While the sweet and spicy chili sauce does bring a mild heat, it leads more into the sweet spectrum. We’d suggest this as a great mid-day meal for anyone wanting something refreshing and filling while not being heavy as the portion size is also pretty generous for the price.

Chicken Stuart’s Szechuan Surprise

$15.49

The featured player of this dish is the rotisserie chicken, which serves as a mainstay from the former Universal Monsters Cafe and a favorite of just about every attendee. What makes this take different is its added glaze of Szechuan spice. The spicy umami with notes of citrus and flower plays incredibly with the chicken’s smokey and savory traits. With that said, the inherent sizzling bite of the sauce tends to linger, and eating too much at once can be a bit, well- surprising. Just be mindful of your pace and it’ll make for a fun, tasty dish.

Paying homage to anything doesn’t come easy. Especially when it’s a former flagship of the park. To that, we’d say that Universal hit it out of the park with this dish. Not only did they put a new, mouthwatering spin on one of the park’s most popular items, but the masterminds behind Minion Cafe chose to keep the original rotisserie and pizza ovens from Monsters Cafe. This means every chicken that’s ordered is essentially a tribute to the former establishment.

Steak and Cheese Ray Sandwich

$14.99

Put simply, this sandwich can be thought of as Universal Orlando’s take on Philly Cheese Steak, but better. The Minion chefs start by marinating the roast beef filling in French Onion sauce and top it with caramelized onions, both of which assist in accentuating the beef’s savory flavor and tenderness. While many similar dishes suffer from being just a tad on the salty side, this one doesn’t. Before being placed fully in its cheese and onion brioche bun, it’s given a “blast” of pimento cheese sauce and then paired with crispy plantain strips (do we sense a banana-related pattern here?) providing guests with a familiar and festive dish.

El Macho’s Salsa y Salsa Ropa Vieja

$16.99

This bowl is a solid choice for anyone looking for something with a Latin flare. It pairs braised beef with ‘El Macho’ tostones, cilantro rice, cucumber and tomato salad, and salsa roja. What sold us on this dish was the addition of the cucumber and tomato salad, which brough a bright freshness to the plate. As with each of the menu items at Minion Cafe, the portion size is good for the price and the plating is exceptional as it welcomes patrons to take it in visually before and upon consumption.

As always, anyone wanting to get a taste of what the Minions have in store can do so and save on Universal Orlando Resort tickets from your trusted source at Orlando Informer!

It hits. That moment when the day’s fast pace has caught up with you and the world has suddenly hit the slow motion button. A zombie-like haze overcomes all of your senses and basic functions, and the only words you can muster emerge as near-incoherent, slurred stammering rather than the thoughtful communication you’d hoped for. This calls for one thing — coffee! But you’re at a bustling theme park with your family — more specifically, you’re at Universal Orlando Resort. You can’t simply leave everyone, there’s barely a moment amidst the brain fog to properly research “Universal Studios coffee,” and you can forget about trekking to a local bean brewer for a cup of that life-giving nectar. We’re at an impasse and we need a solution — stat!

So this begs the question: Where on Universal Orlando Resort’s property can we find nature’s revitalizing elixir?

Cinnabon at Universal’s Islands of Adventure

As a self-proclaimed coffee aficionado and someone who functions almost entirely on caffeine, I’ve found myself caught in this scenario more times than I care to recall. In order to guide you through this dilemma, I’ll go over where each coffee shop is located, the general cost of bean water there, and how they may differ from each other in terms of coffee blends and types.

Never fear, dear readers- let me show you the way!

Starbucks Coffee at Universal Studios Florida

Starbucks Coffee

Located in:
– CityWalk, across from AMC
– New York, Universal Studios Florida
– Port of Entry, Universal’s Islands of Adventure
Coffee price range: $2.69 – $5.79 plus tax

When it comes to coffee, Starbucks is unquestionably the nation’s steadfast provider. They’re the coffee shop that’s familiar to everyone and you can find them no matter where you are. Universal Orlando Resort is no exception. There’s a Starbucks Coffee located just about anywhere a guest can access on the resort’s property. Each hotel features either a fully-functioning Starbucks or is at least equipped with Starbucks products. If you’re visiting the parks, the most convenient Starbucks will be at CityWalk’s main entrance as one of the first establishments you pass by, on your left. If you find yourself in need while you’re inside the parks, fear not — at Universal Studios Florida, you’ll find them in New York, located near the San Francisco border, opposite from Louie’s Italian Restaurant. Islands of Adventure has an establishment at the end of Port of Entry just as you turn to Marvel Super Hero Island. If you’re looking for a quick breakfast, each location also offers pastries and limited sandwiches in addition to the brand’s complete drink menu for your convenience.

Cinnabon in Port of Entry at Universal’s Islands of Adventure

Cinnabon

Located in:
– Port of Entry, Islands of Adventure
– Universal CityWalk, across from Starbucks
Coffee price range: $3.29 – $4.79 plus tax

Much like Starbucks, Cinnabon is a reputable chain with on-site locations offering the brand’s standard menu of baked goods and beverages. If you are heading into the parks, you can easily spot them at the entrance of CityWalk to your right and at Port of Entry’s end over in Islands of Adventure. Both locations offer their full menu to choose from, and patrons in search of a decent cup of coffee have a few options here. They can purchase a hot cup of the chain’s Signature blend or opt for their famous Mochalatta Chill beverage. Cinnabon also offers cold brew coffee, which comes in Cinnamon Bun, vanilla, or caramel flavors. I prefer to steer more in the local direction rather than nationwide chains when I’m grabbing my java or recommending where to find yours, but I won’t pass judgement on anyone for their preferences. Regardless of where you stand on the matter, there’s certainly no arguing that Cinnabon is always a solid option to grab your fix from.

TODAY Cafe

Located in:
– Production Central, Universal Studios Florida
Coffee price range: $3.99 – $4.69 plus tax

I hide nothing when it comes to my love for Today Cafe. They have a great menu that’s unique from anything else you can get on park property, and this is the coffee shop I turn to for my caffeinated needs while visiting Universal. Being the picky coffee fiend I am, that says a lot! Their coffee is a smooth, delicious, and exclusive dark roast blend of Sumatran, Peruvian, and Ethiopian beans. Guests have the option to have it served in the form of lattes, cappuccinos, nitro blends, espresso, and hot or iced coffee. All of those options can be further enhanced with flavors of vanilla, hazelnut, or caramel for an additional ninety-nine cents. If you want my advice, this is the best coffee shop across Universal Orlando Resort. Today Cafe consistently brews a fine cuppa, and the value isn’t bad either. If you find yourself in the mood for a nibble, they offer a great selection of sandwiches and pastries to pair with with your coffee, and the wait to retrieve your order is never terrible.

Lard Lad Donuts

Located in:
– Springfield, U.S.A, Universal Studios Florida
Coffee price range: $3.00 – $4.25 plus tax

This one seems to sneak under most people’s radar. When you think of Lard Lad Donuts, the first thing that comes to mind are the donuts, and rightfully so. With that in mind, what pairs better with a donut than a good cup of coffee? In the spirit of this culinary tradition, Lard Lad serves their own brew. We should take a moment here to note that it’s only served as a standard cup and its flavor is on the bolder side with only half and half or milk in lieu of creamer and flavorings. However, none of this should deter you. Especially when paired with a tasty sweet like The Big Pink, a stronger coffee taste can be quite complementing. If you find yourself around the Springfield area and in need of some extra pep, you’ll also enjoy knowing that there’s rarely ever a line. This means that getting a coffee from a welcoming Team Member is always quick and easy. At the very least, I say if it’s good enough for Chief Wiggum, it’s good enough for me.

Finnegan’s Bar & Grill

Located in:
– New York, Universal Studios Florida
Coffee price range: $2.99 – $12.50 plus tax.

Finnegan’s Bar & Grill offers a selection of 3 different coffee types: Cafe Latte, Cappuccino, and Espresso. This is already a solid start as it falls in line with most full-service restaurants’ offerings, but anyone wanting some spirit with their bean brew can opt for a traditional Irish Coffee, which is a blend of Irish Whiskey and coffee. Astute readers may have noticed that this is technically an off-menu item since it’s not officially listed, but don’t worry — the fan-favorite restaurant has a full bar, meaning that they can craft just about anything you wish. All you’d need to do is simply request it from your server. Finnegan’s typically requires that their patrons are seated in order to be served on which could take a while depending on their crowd level. I’d suggest taking advantage of the bar counter since they’re the speedier choice to grab your beverage from.

Universal’s Fresh Eats

Location:
– Universal Orlando Security Rotunda
Coffee price range: $3.29 – $4.79 plus tax.

Much like Diagon Alley, The Fresh Eats stand is a vendor that’s hidden in plain sight amongst the daily bustle of eager guests and a large souvenir venue nearby. They offer three options of Starbucks brews as part of their standard offerings: regular cold brew, Vanilla cold brew, and regular coffee, as well as seasonal selections like their Unicorn Frappuccino. As a precaution, it’s worth mentioning that they’re only purchasable in the company’s “Grande” size, but it’s still a decent spot to grab your coffee from. In addition to this venue serving Starbucks, this is another location with little to no wait on average since guests crossing through the rotunda are either more concerned about making their way through the Security gates or are too distracted by the rack of limited edition Back to the Future glassware and other eye-catching merchandise. They also have select offerings from Voodoo Donuts, which always pair perfectly with that cup of Joe as a quick breakfast before making your way to the parks.

That leads me to my next location.

Voodoo Doughnut

Located in:
– Universal CityWalk, by NBC Sports Grill & Brew
Coffee price range: $3.29 plus tax

Voodoo Doughnut has earned a nationwide reputation around their famed donuts, but I would contend that they should be also be known for coffee. Through a partnership with Portland-based Nosso Familia — a coffee company whose humble beginning was funded by a successful Kickstarter campaign — Voodoo Doughnut serves the coffee brand’s Teodoro’s Italian roast to their beloved patrons. This full-bodied, medium-dark blend’s flavor is expressed with cocoa, roasted nuts, hints of woody spice, caramel, and a gentle touch of almond. In the spirit of transparency, I didn’t know they offered coffee until fairly recently. Once I discovered this, I rushed over to give it a try and I have to say I was impressed by how much I enjoyed it. If you’re like me and prefer a little extra flair to your brew, I’ll always suggest adding a splash of half and half or creamer and opt for the addition of vanilla, hazelnut, or caramel for 79 cents. However, if you take yours black, it’s still a smooth sip that will do the trick that I’m sure you’ll enjoy. It is considered Nosso Familia’s “crowd pleaser” after all.

Toothsome’s Chocolate Emporium

Located in:
– Universal CityWalk, between Islands of Adventure and Hard Rock Live
Coffee price range: $14.00 – $15.00 plus tax

Toothsome’s is famous for two things: a passion for chocolate, and some impressive milkshakes. With that said, the latter’s menu has something that every coffee lover can dig into — the Espresso Buzzzz! To make this incredible delectable, the establishment’s confectioners fill one of their signature souvenir jars to the brim with a blend of coffee ice cream and fresh-brewed espresso. They then top and rim the jar with a chocolate mousse whip, chocolate-covered espresso beans, four biscotti cookies, and a single maraschino cherry. It’s almost too beautiful to consume, but consume you will! While it does lean more into the dessert category, it’s a sweet treat that will still provide a perk to your step and serve as the perfect way to treat yourself. Although you’ll have to grab yourself a reservation and table for this last one, it’s more than worth the effort. Toothsome’s full-service restaurant also has the Chocolate Coffee Banana, which is a cocktail made up of Caribe Club banana rum, Galliano Ristretto coffee liqueur, Faretti chocolate, soy milk, and chocolate bitters — a perfect potable for a post-meal-pick-me-up.

We hope this list makes your future coffee pursuits at Universal Orlando Resort easier! With so many options to choose from, you’re sure to find something to enjoy and keep the fun going.

What’s a vacation in Florida without some great seafood? The Sunshine State is surrounded by water and is supplied with ample varieties of fresh fish, shellfish, and more. Throughout Orlando, you can find restaurants serving up fresh and delicious seafood. Take it from a local – these are the best restaurants to catch some fresh food from the sea at.

Best seafood at Walt Disney World

The Boathouse at Disney Springs
The Boathouse at Disney Springs

Walt Disney World Resort has some great seafood, despite being home to Ariel and her under-the-sea friends.

Let’s start off with the best seafood in the theme parks. Magic Kingdom has two options: Columbia Harbor House is a counter-service restaurant inside Liberty Square, near the Haunted Mansion (it’s actually my favorite quick-service place at the park). Highlights of the menu include Grilled Salmon, a Grilled Shrimp Skewer, and classic Fried Shrimp – a staple of Columbia Harbor House. I suggest heading up to the second floor to dine; it’s quieter and has some great views of Fantasyland and Liberty Square.

For table-service inside Magic Kingdom, my favorite is Skipper Canteen in Adventureland. The venue’s story is that it is run by Jungle Cruise skippers so they can have extra income (kind of an edgy backstory, if you think about it). I absolutely love the atmosphere – there are so many details to explore, and lots of Jungle Cruise-appropriate puns, too. The menu has seen some changes over Skipper Canteen’s relatively short lifetime, but, currently, there are three seafood entrees: Fried Whole Fish, Seafood Stew, and Fresh Sustainable Fish. If you really, really love seafood, you should try a whole fried fish (at Skipper Canteen or elsewhere) – it’s a lot of work navigating an entire whole fish with your fork, but nothing compares to the flavor.

Over at Epcot, you’ll find Coral Reef Restaurant, where you can immerse yourself into the wonderful world under the sea. Located at The Seas with Nemo & Friends, you’ll dine right alongside the second largest aquarium in North America – which provides some spectacular views and an unbeatable ambiance. The menu is a little limited compared to other Disney restaurants, but the Lobster Seafood Boil and Seared Mahi Mahi are great for aficionados.

A hidden gem for seafood is located at Animal Kingdom. Tiffins Restaurant is an explorer’s paradise, with an atmosphere that is sophisticated and that contains tributes to the beauty of world travel. Highlights of the menu include Charred Octopus as well as Thai Curry Mussels for appetizers and Whole Fried Sustainable Fish for an entree. And the wine selection and cocktail list are among the best in all of Disney World.

At Disney Springs, you will find two incredible venues dedicated to seafood: The Boathouse and Paddlefish, which are located pretty close to each other. It is hard for me to decide which I prefer, but I could give a slight edge to Boathouse – I enjoy its atmosphere, especially at its Dockside Bar right on the water. Really, though, you cannot go wrong with either one – since both of their menus are dominated by fresh seafood, I highly recommend either one for a true seafood fan.

It would be remiss of me to not include Todd English’s bluezoo at the Swan hotel. The eatery has an atmosphere all its own, located in a resort with a style all its own. Offering the largest raw bar in Walt Disney World, bluezoo has some of the most beautifully presented seafood you can find – and creatively prepared, too. A dinner here is costly, but it is sure to also be unforgettable.

Best seafood at Universal Orlando

The Palm at Hard Rock Hotel
The Palm at Hard Rock Hotel

At Universal Orlando Resort, you can find great seafood inside the theme parks, at CityWalk, and at some of the hotels. Within the parks, Lombard’s Seafood Grille is your best pick, as the name implies; overlooking the Universal Studios Florida lagoon, Lombard’s is one of the park’s original restaurants, so going here is a little like stepping back in time to Universal Studios’s original days. The menu is impressive – highlights include the Fisherman’s Basket (full of fried seafood goodness) and the Cioppino Ocean Bowl (with mussels, calamari, little neck clams, Atlantic cod, shrimp, tomato fennel broth, and fusilli pasta).

For something much more casual, head over to Springfield: Home of the Simpsons for the fried seafood specialties of The Frying Dutchman. As a big fan of The Simpsons, I love the this area of the theme park, and I think Fast Food Boulevard, where Frying Dutchman is housed, has some of the best quick-service food in all of Universal Orlando. Here, you can order the Battered and Plattered Fish Combo and Basket o’ Bait, which consists of fried cod, coconut-crusted shrimp, and fried calamari.

It is hard to argue against Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. being the best place for seafood at CityWalk. Of course, there is shrimp galore, like the movie says – options include Shrimp Cocktail, Shrimp Mac and Cheese, Shrimp Gumbo, Coconut Shrimp, Shrimp New Orleans, Shrimper’s Heaven, and more. This casual and energetic restaurant is a guaranteed fun time; life may be like a box of chocolates, but at Bubba Gump, you know you’re going to get some great seafood.

If you want a high-end experience, consider The Palm at Hard Rock Hotel. Throughout the country, The Palm has locations at the most popular cities, and here at Orlando, you can savor delicious seafood specialties like Branzino and Chilean Sea Bass. The venue is also a well-known steakhouse, so if you’re dining with someone who would prefer an excellent steak while you’re in search of excellent seafood, you will both be happy here.

Best local restaurants for seafood in Orlando

We are so fortunate here in Orlando to have so many great restaurants throughout our area. When in search of the best seafood, you can, of course, head out to either coast for ocean-side dining, but there is also actually plenty of places for great seafood in Central Florida.

Most locals rank High Tide Harry’s as the best seafood in the City Beautiful, and this come-as-you-are eatery is packed to the gills with tasty catches from the sea. The menu is massive, and there are specials based on whatever is fresh from the ocean that day – essentially any seafood you can imagine coming out of Florida’s oceans can be found here. There is a raw bar, you can get a variety of crab legs, or you can try a Florida favorite: rock shrimp. High Tide Harry’s is located near the Orlando International Airport, so consider it to either kick off your Orlando vacation or end it on a great note. (Oh, and don’t forget to order a cocktail or a beer served in a fish bowl!)

Not far from Universal Orlando is an area known as Restaurant Row, which is home to Big Fin Seafood Kitchen. For over a decade, Big Fin has been serving Orlando with a fantastic raw bar, sushi, and creative seafood specialties. During the months of mid-October to mid-May, Florida enjoys stone crab season, so be sure to order that here if you visit during this time. Its Happy Hour runs Monday to Saturday, 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm, and on Sunday, 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm – you can enjoy great drink and food specials, and I suggest sitting at the open-air bar if the weather is nice.

Finally, Grills Lakeside is the absolute best option if you don’t want to drive out to the beach but still get the feeling you are there. There are two Grills locations on the East Coast, and one new one in Orlando. About a 30-minute drive from the attractions area, along the shores of Lake Fairview, Grills Lakeside Orlando has incredible views of the water. Locals quickly fell in love with this place thanks to its tropical atmosphere and locally sourced food. Offering live music in the evenings, Friday though Sunday, Grills Lakeside is a great place to kick back, enjoy a few drinks, and nibble on delicious seafood like Peel and Eat Shrimp, Seared Tuna, Bahamian Fish Chowder, or a Fish Reuben Sandwich.

One of the many things that makes an Orlando vacation so wonderful is the excellent service offered at Universal Orlando and Walt Disney World Resorts. Often, the service you receive throughout your visit can make or break your vacation – and when you experience excellent service, you may want to reward it by providing a monetary tip.

Yes, we’ve already covered tipping in Orlando, generally, but it’s good to know ahead of time what positions at Disney and Universal, specifically, can accept tips, and what amounts are customary. So here we go!

Tipping at Disney and Universal’s hotels

Strong Water Tavern at Loews Sapphire Falls at Universal Orlando Resort
Strong Water Tavern at Sapphire Falls Resort

Some people view a hotel as just a place to sleep, but, in reality, it’s your home away from home, where you start and end every day. The staff at your resort can help answer questions, assist you with your room, provide useful information to make sure you have a great vacation, and, sometimes, even help extend the theme of Universal Orlando and Disney World’s lushly detailed hotels.

At your resort, you will most likely encounter a variety of staff members, with some traditionally receiving gratuity and others not. Generally speaking, positions that involve physical labor – like those in bell services handling luggage and those in housekeeping who work hard to keep the rooms clean – receive tips. It is important to note that, for the most part, jobs that normally receive tips are dictated by Florida law – a business must indicate if a position is considered a tipped role.

  • Bell service staff members generally receive $1.00 to $2.00 per bag for their service. If you feel the service is exemplary, you can certainly provide more.
  • Disney’s Magical Express allows guests to be bused from Orlando International Airport to their Disney resort and back again, with their luggage leaving the airplane and magically making its way to their hotel room. It is a nice touch to provide gratuity to the Magical Express bus driver, one or two dollars per person in your party.
  • For housekeeping staff, it is customary to tip a buck or two per person in the room per day, or, generally, $5.00 per day. It is a nice idea to tip daily, as sometimes housekeeping staff can change day to day, meaning your room may be cleaned by different employees each time.
  • If you request an item to be brought to your room, or if something is delivered, it is nice to provide $1.00 or $2.00, depending on the item and speed of service.
  • In-room dining, or room service at both Disney and Universal, results in automatic gratuity.
  • Universal Orlando’s hotels often include an 18% service charge for their pool (and some regular) bars. Be sure to review your bill before providing any additional gratuity.

Front desk and concierge staff generally cannot accept tips. If you would like to provide one, feel free to offer it, and if they decline due to a hotel policy, then consider asking to share your compliments to a manager so they can be made aware of the staff member’s helpfulness. An exception to this rule is at the concierge club level – generally, the staff here can accept gratuities, whether they are serving you food and drink in the lounge or helping you plan your vacation. For food and beverage, two to three dollars is a good idea to leave on the table if you make use of the lounge and its offerings; for the concierge staff who assist you with trip planning and other arrangements, $5.00 to $10.00 is generally good, but leave $20.00 if you use their service extensively (this would be on a per-interaction basis, if possible).

One last note: Disney resorts have the option for you to skip housekeeping service, if you wish. If you do, you will receive a Disney gift card, whose amount varies by hotel type and length of stay – generally, five to 10 dollars per night. (The final night of your stay does not count towards this, as your room must be cleaned after you depart.)

Who to tip at Universal and Disney’s theme parks

Be Our Guest at Magic Kingdom
Be Our Guest Restaurant at Magic Kingdom

Essentially, the only positions inside Walt Disney World and Universal Orlando’s theme parks that receive tips are servers at the full-service restaurants and bartenders at the bars.

  • At the theme-park bars, $2.00 to $3.00 per drink, if mixed, is a good range, whereas one or two bucks per drink, if beer or wine, is acceptable.
  • At the full-service restaurants, 15% to 20% is customary. This is based on the total of the bill, including drinks, and before any discounts. If the service is really great, consider tipping more; if, on the other hand, the service is poor, it is still polite to tip a little something – and ask for a manager, if necessary.
  • Gratuity isn’t included in either Disney Dining Packages or the Universal Dining Plan; however, for parties of six or more, a tip is automatically added at Disney World.

For all other positions inside the theme parks, tips are not accepted. If a cast or team member, such as a ride attendant or merchandise host, provides great service, please visit Guest Relations or Guest Services to provide a compliment. Or you can contact either park through Twitter (@WDWGuestServices + #CastCompliment or @UniversalORL + UOFistBump) – just be sure to include their name and work location, and if you happen to catch their hometown on their nametag, that helps, too.

Other information about tipping at Disney World and Universal Orlando

Universal Orlando’s legendary water taxis

  • Bus and boat transportation are an important part of getting around both Walt Disney World and Universal Orlando Resorts, but the staff who man these vehicles are generally not able to accept gratuity.
  • If you use a taxi, ride-share service, or Disney’s Minnie Vans, a tip of roughly 10% is a good rule of thumb.
  • Both Universal and Disney have full-service spas at select hotels; Mandara Spa at Portofino Bay Hotel automatically charges 20% gratuity, and this is also the case at Disney’s Senses Spa.

Valet parking is an option at Universal Orlando’s parking structure that leads to CityWalk and the theme parks, and both Universal and Disney’s premium class of hotels offer valet parking, as well. It is a good idea to consider providing a tip both when you drop off the car and when it is returned to you; I have found that when I tip both times, I receive faster service.

Traveling as a vegan used to be difficult. Not only was it unguaranteed that the destination would be able to provide vegan dining options, but even if they did have something to offer, most of the time there would only be one dish – and it would be uncreative, at best. Because of this, most vegans opted to bring their own food to places, which could be quite difficult in a busy theme-park environment like Universal Orlando Resort.

Now, however, those with a vegan diet don’t have to worry about limited food options around the resort. With newly-added menu items throughout the theme parks and CityWalk, eating vegan at Universal just got a whole lot easier.

Quick-service park options

Beyond Burger at Universal Orlando Resort
Beyond Burger at Universal Orlando Resort (image: Universal)

Previously, there weren’t any vegan options available at the quick-service locations in the theme parks – now, however, there are a variety of dishes that can be found throughout both Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure. (Quick-service restaurants tend to share menus throughout the two parks, and this is still the case for vegan options; if it can be found at Studios, it can be found at Islands.)

One of the biggest changes to come to the park is that the new Beyond Burger is now being served at Richter’s Burger Co. and Mel’s Drive-In at Universal Studios and Captain America’s Diner at Islands. The Beyond Burger is a plant-based patty, served with Follow Your Heart vegan cheese and topped with Vegenaise sauce. Those who have had the burger say it’s a great alternative to a meat-based product, and the Vegenaise sauce adds a wonderful flavor to the sandwich.

Over at Louie’s Italian Restaurant (in Studios) and Cafe 4 (in Islands), you can find spaghetti bolognese (a pasta dish served with plant-based Gardein sausage crumbles), spaghetti with marinara sauce (ask for no meatballs), and minestrone soup, although this latter option is only available at Louie’s, and not Cafe 4. Eating at these two restaurants is a great option for those looking to avoid the typical theme-park fare, and the portion sizes are generous. (Just a note, however – some nights, Cafe 4 hosts the Marvel Character Dinner, and the food there isn’t as vegan-friendly.)

If burgers and Italian food aren’t up your alley, you can also head over to either Mel’s Drive-In at Universal Studios or The Burger Digs at Islands of Adventure for their Chick’n and avocado sandwiches. Served with plant-based Gardein chicken, Follow Your Heart cheese, and smashed avocado, this sandwich is a great alternative to the Beyond Burger. You could also grab an “I ‘Heart’ Vegan Sandwich” from Today Cafe during lunch (after 11:00 am) or a veggie press sandwich from either San Francisco Pastry Co. or Croissant Moon Bakery.

Finally, Universal Studios’ Classic Monster Cafe offers The Mummy Combo, a slow-cooked jackfruit barbeque sandwich platter. Or you could head over to Thunder Falls Terrace to grab a jackfruit rice bowl – you would just have to ask them to remove the cheese and sour cream from the dish.

Table-service in the parks

Confisco Grille at Islands of Adventure's Port of Entry
Confisco Grille at Islands of Adventure’s Port of Entry

If quick-service isn’t your thing, or if you’d rather enjoy a longer respite from the heat, each of the four table -service restaurants in the parks now offer vegan options.

At Islands of Adventure, Mythos features vegan pad thai (a favorite) and a souvlaki couscous bowl (these options also have a non-vegan variety, so they need to be requested as vegan upon ordering). Additionally, the complimentary bread service can be vegan but should be double-checked before consuming, in case suppliers have changed, and the mezze platter is also a wonderful vegan appetizer available at the restaurant. Confisco Grille offers a variety of dishes, as well, including pad thai, hummus, fajitas (served without meat or cheese), and chipotle sausage with orzo, which features Gardein sausage crumbles, chipotle pesto, and roasted red peppers.

Over at Universal Studios Florida, Lombard’s Seafood Grille has penne genovese, a dish served with Beyond Sausage, roasted garlic, and basil. They can also prepare their mushroom quinoa dish as vegan, if asked. Finnegan’s Bar & Grill has also added a vegan dish to their menu – a Beyond Burger vegan shepherd’s pie. Served with vegan red bliss mashed potatoes and steamed vegetables, this dish is a filling meal for anybody looking to re-energize their theme-park day.

Snacks and other goodies

Auntie Anne’s at Islands of Adventure

Universal has partnered with Ben and Jerry’s and Auntie Anne’s to provide snacks at various locations throughout the theme parks, and these two companies offer vegan options; Ben and Jerry’s has coconut- and almond-based non-dairy frozen desserts, as well as various sorbet flavors, while Auntie Anne’s soft pretzels are vegan but must be ordered without butter.

For additional snacks throughout the parks, popcorn is vegan, as is the whole fruit and fruit cups offered at many of the snack stands. Dippin’ Dots rainbow sorbet is vegan, along with traditional (non-Bavarian) soft pretzels. For those Harry Potter fans, Butterbeer is not vegan, and guests should ask team members about the different wizarding snacks as they see them because suppliers consistently change.

CityWalk

Bigfire's Cauliflower Steak at CityWalk
Bigfire’s Cauliflower Steak at CityWalk

There are so many vegan options available in CityWalk – too many to name them all here. Almost every restaurant location at Universal’s dining/shopping/entertainment district will be able to provide a good-tasting vegan meal, but there are a few standouts that should be highlighted.

Bigfire – the newest restaurant in CityWalk – offers a cauliflower steak, grilled and served with warm farro salad and a charred tomato sauce. Antojitos Authentic Mexican Food can modify many of its entress, like fajitas, quesadillas, and enchiladas, into vegan dishes, if asked. Bob Marley – A Tribute to Freedom serves Ital Eats stuffed peppers that are naturally vegan, and they also have other options that can be made vegan, as well. VIVO Italian Kitchen offers up a vegan sausage pasta, made with Gardein sausage crumbles, and Jimmy Buffet’s Margaritaville also serves the Beyond Burger.

For dessert, Toothsome Chocolate Emporium and Savory Feast Kitchen can make vegan milkshakes that use soy milk and vegan chocolate ice cream, although the item isn’t listed on the menu and must be specifically asked for. Voodoo Doughnut also offers a wide variety of their doughnuts as vegan, offering a great post-park (or pre-park!) sweet.

Although there are many options available to guests visiting the resort, sometimes you just want to have your food taken care of and not have to worry about what you are going to eat. If you purchase a VIP Tour at Universal – a private or a two-park non-private experience – you will be in the hands of chefs who will ensure your dietary needs are taken care of. With their own private dining for breakfast and lunch, maintaining a vegan diet will be a breeze with the VIP Experience. Just make sure your preferences are mentioned upon booking so the team can have breakfast ready for you when you arrive.

One of the many joys of visiting theme parks is indulging in sweet treats you might otherwise resist. In this edition of THE BIG 5, I take your sweet tooth on a journey through Universal Orlando’s best desserts.

And please note: for this countdown, I stuck with desserts that can be found in the two theme parks and CityWalk.

#5 – Chocolate trifle & ice cream at Three Broomsticks

The trifle is a traditional, layered dessert hailing from the UK. The chocolate trifle found at Three Broomsticks is layers of moist chocolate cake, chocolate mouse, and fresh strawberries. Each time I felt like I was having too much chocolate, a spoonful of fresh and sweet strawberries would change up the taste. And the serving size is just enough to get your sweet fix without feeling weighed down.

Three Broomsticks is also home to Florean Fortescue’s ice cream, which is available in vanilla, chocolate, and, my personal favorite, strawberry peanut butter. I am a peanut butter fanatic!

Soon we will be able to enjoy Florean Fortescue’s Ice-Cream Parlor at Diagon Alley. I hope that the ice cream there is hand-scooped; the current variety is prepacked and frozen pretty solid. I suggest letting it sit to soften it up.

#4 – The “King” Carrot Cake at NASCAR Sports Grille

You don’t have to be a NASCAR fan – or even a sports fan – to appreciate the great food and generous portions at NASCAR Sports Grille. It is difficult to choose a dish from the impressive dessert menu (which consists of seven choices!), but the “King” Carrot Cake would have to be it.

The sweet sugar-and-spice cake is made fresh, in-house, and definitely with love. And at nearly a pound, it is massive! Nothing prepared me for how big it is.

This dessert is a homemade classic and is very comforting. Just make sure you have a few folks with which to share.

A very close second to the massive carrot cake is the Chocolate Tire Blowout. Not only is it a cute name, it is a chocolate lover’s bliss. Who doesn’t love molten lava cake? NASCAR Sports Grille serves theirs warm and melty with cold vanilla ice cream.

#3 – Chocolate Hurricane at Jimmy Buffett’s Margaritaville

Get ready to be blown away! You will absolutely have to have a crew with you to defeat this bad boy.

Jimmy Buffett's Chocolate Hurricane.

A whole pint of vanilla ice cream is accompanied by brownies, Kit Kat and Heath bars, mini-cookies, sliced bananas, chopped macadamia nuts, and a crazy amount of whipped cream. Chocolate and caramel sauces are swirled at your table in a hypnotic spinning turn on a Lazy Susan. It is one of those “I can’t believe we’re doing this” epic desserts.

#2 – Fresh Apple Cobbler at Hard Rock Cafe

Who knew rock stars had such a sweet side? This Fresh Apple Cobbler is almost worthy of a standing ovation. The apples are crisp, tart, and surrounded by a luxurious, caramelized brown sugar filling. The crumble topping is buttery and not too crisp, and a few raisins add a subtle juicy sweetness.

Of course, what apple dessert would be complete without a scoop of creamy, sweet vanilla ice cream topped with caramel sauce? This comforting dessert is sure to make you feel warm and toasty inside.

I have also tried the Twisted Shakes at Hard Rock. There are four flavors of these adult-oriented, alcoholic milkshakes, and I’ve had two: the Twist & Shout Shake and the VooDoo Brew.

The Twist & Shout is a blend of Guinness Stout, Barcardi Oakheart spiced rum, dark crème de cacao, chocolate syrup, and vanilla ice cream. Supposedly, there is also salted caramel syrup, which I could not taste, and it is topped with whipped cream and bacon pieces. Overall, this shake tasted very watered-down and left me underwhelmed.

The VooDoo Brew has much stronger flavors, and I was very pleased. This fruity, creamy shake is made with vanilla ice cream, Smirnoff Blueberry vodka, Monin Desert Pear, and Shock Top Belgian white ale.

#1 – Chocolate Banana Gooey Cake at Mythos

Overlooking the beautiful Islands of Adventure lagoon, Mythos is an iconic theme park restaurant. It is beautiful inside and offers a panoramic view of the park.

When it’s time for dessert, the Chocolate Banana Gooey Cake takes the ever-popular chocolate molten lava cake to a new level.

The warm, flourless chocolate cake melts in your mouth. The fresh-sliced bananas are sinful when dipped in the gooey chocolate flowing over the plate. But the best part, for me, is the peanut butter ice cream (told you I am a peanut butter fanatic!) – both it and the caramel sauce heighten the indulgent flavors of this delectable dessert.

Honorable mention: Mini Dessert Shots

I am a big fan of this concept, as I love to end a meal with something sweet but am also trying to eat better and manage my weight. Luckily for me, these mini-desserts fit the bill perfectly.

There are four flavors from which to choose: crème brulee, Oreo, key lime, and raspberry cheesecake.

Universal Orlando's ubiquitous mini dessert shots, as seen at Mythos.

The raspberry cheesecake is my favorite of the four; the cheesecake would have been too plain without the raspberry topping, but, together, the layers are sweet and satisfying.

Being on vacation means doing all sorts of wonderful things you can’t normally do at home. So while you may think twice about ordering dessert when you’re out to eat back at home, don’t give it a second thought when you’re having a blast at Universal Orlando – there’s just way too many terrific treats to resist. Besides, you’re bound to burn off those calories with all those extra steps you’ll be taking as you walk throughout the parks.

Important update

As of November 3, 2013, all the information in this blog post PLUS additional details about the park’s new dining plan can now be found on our rebooted Complete guide to Universal’s Dining Plans page in the OI Universal Center.

Original Post

The Universal Dining Plan, a new feature available for guests booking Universal vacation packages, debuted on July 1, 2013. In this post we offer readers a look at the basic plan information and provide an in-depth review from a “real guest” who used the plan in August. Finally, in the comments section we encourage to ask questions or share your experience with the new plan.

Overview

The new Universal Dining Plan is available to add to any vacation package with on-site hotel or off-site hotel, booked through Universal Parks & Resorts Vacations. The cost of the Universal Dining Plan is $45.99 + tax for adults and $17.99 + tax for children (age 3-9) – gratuities not included.

The Universal Dining Plan is NOT AVAILABLE for purchase at the parks.

If you have trouble viewing the details of the plan in the image above, you can view/download the PDF file by clicking here.

Please note that as of August 2013 Three Broomsticks is included in the Universal Dining Plan. In addition, a table service credit may be used for the Superstar Breakfast at Universal Studios Florida (reservations required, call 407-224-7554; for some reason this option is not listed on the form above but is definitely available).

Universal Dining Plan: Real guest review #1

I enjoyed my first family vacation at Universal last week (August 19). We had a great time! I have been to Disney four times over the previous six years and have always loved it. I always get the dining plan when I go to Disney in some form or another. I have read all the debates, for and against, and to me I just like it. I had not read about the Universal Dining Plan until after booking. I was happy to find out that we could add it to our vacation package, and so we did.

We were staying eight nights but decided to purchase a 3-day plan because we planned to visit other parks. I was happy to find out that the 3-day plan only meant that we got three days worth of food — not necessarily three consecutive days of dining. In other words, our credits could be used any time during our stay.

Upon arriving at the Royal Pacific Resort, I eventually made my way to the ticket kiosk. When my tickets printed, the Universal Dining Plan tickets were wrong. Each ticket had a different person’s name on it; none of the names were ours. After waiting in line for 10 minutes, we were told that there were problems with the Universal Dining Plan tickets printing at the kiosk and they would swap them out. We received new plastic dining plan cards.

On the first day we went to a cart in Islands of Adventure to get an Icee for a snack. The cashier told us that they did not accept the Universal Dining Plan there. The menu board at cart clearly had the “UD” symbol next to the prices. When we asked her about this, her reply was, “the register doesn’t have the button.” We walked quite a way to another Icee stand. This is when we found out about the unfortunate process of paying with your dining card. Each one was processed separately so one snack could be taken from each card. Because of this, throughout our trip it took several minutes to process even simple orders each time we used the plan. We much prefer Disney’s approach, as they put all entitlements essentially on one account (eg. three days for four people equals 12 snacks, 12 counter service, etc.).

That evening we had a reservation at Lombard’s Seafood Grille inside Universal Studios Florida. First, the food was good but not excellent. The plan offers any entree on the menu (except the lobster). I will say that the menus at the table service restaurants are not large. There are not many more options than any Disney restaurant, post-dining plan menu changes. After dinner our waiter appeared with a tray of desserts for the table. We were told that they were out of the deserts that came with the dining plan and put these options together instead. It was quite good.

The next day as we continued to use our cards it became more and more apparent that the staff was not comfortable handling the cards. We got everything from calling over someone to help to “Phew! It worked.” At the counter service restaurants, after ordering and paying for all four family member orders separately, the cashier has to yell over that she just had four Universal Dining Plan orders — that’s the only way the cooks knew to keep them together.

On the second day we has a reservation at Mythos inside Islands of Adventure. My older son (10), who had an adult plan, ordered a chocolate milk. We were told that this would not be included in the Universal Dining Plan. Really? He got a Sprite instead. Throughout the meal I was very disappointing with the service, and I could not help but feel our server’s less than stellar performance was the result of us paying with the Universal Dining Plan. After dinner we were again told that they were out of the desserts that came with the plan. We got a scoop of vanilla ice cream, whip cream and a few sprinkles. We waited 10 minutes at least for our ice cream while desert after decadent desert poured out of the kitchen. Needless to say we were not happy! In my opinion, if a restaurant runs out of an item, they should offer something better — not worse. Finally a manager, Glen, came over to speak with us.

Our conversation with Glen made it sound like the Universal Dining Plan was basically dumped on Universal’s team members with no advance notice. They were given one brief training, then it was on. The team members were overwhelmed with problems and lack of training. Glen was very nice, however, and after our experience at Mythos he personally took us to Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey. We got a mini tour of the castle from him and a trip to the front of the line.

We enjoyed our final table service meal at Finnegan’s Bar & Grill inside Universal Studios Florida. The food again was good, even slightly better than good. We finally got our included desserts… dessert shots. Ummm, can I have the vanilla ice cream instead?

But we did have another issue on our last day. We bought two waters and the cashier insisted that he could ring them together and use two different dining cards (verses the one-order-per-one-card process I explained earlier). He ended up deducting a beverage and a counter service meal from our card. We were sent to a nearby information booth to fix the problem. Fixed, all set. Then later that afternoon we went to Richter’s Burgers for lunch. One card did not have a counter service meal on it. Not fixed. Fortunately the manager was able to fix it for us. Just another hassle.

Overall I would say that Universal has issues to fix with their new dining plan. In addition to what I described above, there needs to more choices: there are currently no options in the resorts, and there is also only one counter service option in Citywalk, Pastamore (now closed for renovation!). The bottom line is, I definitely would not purchase a dining plan if we were to return next year.

– Steve

Thank you, Steve, for offering a brutally honest review of the Universal Dining Plan. We can only hope that as the plan matures over the next few months, Universal is able to address all the concerns you’ve mentioned.

Universal Dining Plan: Real guest review #2

Visited Universal 8/27-8/28 and a few hours on 8/30, my children and I (ages 12 and 16) purchased a 3 day, 4 night Universal vacation package at an off site hotel. Included in the package was a “free” 2 day dining plan. We arrived in Orlando on a Monday and went to city walk so that I could print out our tickets before our first day at the park on Tuesday. I also noticed that the names on the dining plan tickets were wrong. However, you need to go to guest services(at the entrances located just inside the parks) and get a plastic type credit card in order to use the card so the names on the cards really do not matter. Included on each of our 3 cards was two table service meals, two quick service meals, 2 beverages and 2 snacks(note that butterbeer counts as a snack!).

We did not encounter any problems using the card other than learning that each transaction needs to be rung up separately. We used our table service meals at Mythos restaurant for lunch both days mainly because we did not want a big meal at the end of the day and it was too far to go to CityWalk. The choices for full service are very limited and since we do not like seafood and Irish pub food, that left Lombardi’s and Finnegan’s out. That left Mythos and Confisco Grille. We found our meals to be excellent and were content with the small dessert shot that is included with the table service option.

We ate our first counter service meal at Krusty Burger and Cletus’ Chicken Shack because we happened to be in that area at dinnertime. We made sure to ask if they accepted the dining plan and they did. No problems using the card, but hands down it was the worst meal we ate at the parks. The novelty of saying that we ate at Krusty Burger did not justify the poor quality of the food. Our second counter service meal was at The Three Broomsticks. I found the quality of the food better than Fast Food Blvd but not as good as Mythos. The quick service meals are just that — food that is already prepared, sitting in pans under a heat lamp waiting for someone to order it.

We used our beverage credits on water and soda and our snack credits on butterbeer and a pastry from Starbucks. I liked the idea of not having to pull out cash or a credit card every time we wanted to eat something but the quality of the counter services meals did not justify getting the dining plan. Eat a big breakfast, have a big meal at Mythos and grab a butterbeer instead. I will not be getting the dining plan the next time we visit Universal.

– Debra

Thanks, Debra, for sharing your review. It sounds like you were more displeased with the food overall then with the mechanics of using the Universal Dining Plan, so I’m happy that, at least in that regard, your experience was better than Steve’s. I’ve also confirmed on a recent visit to Universal that yes, the dining plan can be used at Fast Food Blvd. Since FFB isn’t listed on the material, I think some team members are telling guests that cannot be used there — hence the confusion.

Readers, if you have a question about the Universal Dining Plan or would like to share your own thoughts, we encourage you to do so in the comments section at the bottom of the post!

With all of the Minion Mayhem going on at Universal Orlando Resort lately, wouldn’t it be fun to have some of your own Minion Mayhem at home? You can with these super tasty and cute minion cupcakes!

To make your Minion cupcakes you will need the following:

  • Box cake mix (or your own from scratch recipe.)
  • Frosting
  • Twinkies
  • Smarties candy
  • Brown sprinkles
  • Writing icing (black if possible – I didn’t have black so I used green and blue)

Follow directions on cake mix box for the cupcakes. For a healthier option, you can substitute oil with applesauce. Once baking is complete, allow some time for cooling.

Minion cupcakes.
Minion cupcakes.

While the cupcakes are cooling you can prepare your Minions. For your minions you will cut the Twinkies in half.

Minion cupcakes.
Minion cupcakes.

Minion cupcakes.

To prepare the goggles/eyes pick two Smarties of the same color. Place two dots of writing icing on the Twinkie where you want your Minion’s goggles to be. This will act as glue to hold them on. Next, outline the goggles with your writing frosting and add the goggle headbands.

Once that is done, you’re ready to place a dot of writing icing in the middle of each Smartie to complete the eyes.

Now it’s time to frost the cupcakes. I added blue food coloring to mine to match the Minion’s uniforms.

Now you can give your Minions a mouth and place them on top of the cupcakes. Next grab some brown sprinkles and place them into the top of their heads for the hair. It’s fun to get creative with these!

For extra fun, I made some speech bubbles. These would be a great way to add a message to your cupcakes, Happy Birthday for example.

Your Minion Cupcakes are now complete. Time to enjoy!

Welcome to our next Special Needs Are Universal article. The purpose of this OI Blog series is to answer your theme park disability questions and give families the confidence to enjoy all of Orlando! This week we’ll be discussing food allergies.

Special Needs are Universal.
Special Needs are Universal.

As of January 21, 2013, a new law classifies those severely allergic to shell fish, peanuts, wheat, corn, gluten (celiac disease) and some other allergens as able to fall under the Americans with Disabilities Act. It only stands to reason that theme park restaurants must now be equipped with ingredient information for guests with these allergies, as this new law leaves restaurants more vulnerable. This leads me to our question from AMJ:

We are planning our first visit to US/IOA in May. My children and I are vegetarians. Additionally, my DD (dear daughter) has a severe egg allergy. She is also allergic to mustard and tree nuts. Disney is fabulous with handling food allergies and having vegetarian options, but we have had some not so great experiences at other theme parks so I am a little concerned about how we are going to handle this.

At Disney, the counter service restaurants have ingredient binders with the cashiers. Does anyone know if US/IOA has anything similar? Are the table service restaurants helpful with special diets?

I’m nervous that we will show up to eat a restaurant at US/IOA and we won’t have any choices. What is the policy of US/IOA of bringing food into the parks?

AMJ, you need not be nervous about your family’s dietary needs while visiting the Universal Orlando. I have personally worked with several Team Members over the years and have rounded up the information you need to make your vacation a success.

Regarding dietary binders, Universal does not have them, as such. However, chefs and restaurant managers DO have the information you need about their food offerings. A couple of years ago I worked with the manager of the International Food & Film Festival restaurant (currently under construction to become Simpson’s themed) to see what she could do to help our daughter find food that could be easily swallowed, as our daughter cannot chew. She was a great help at the time and offered to make our daughter mac & cheese if we gave her 48 hours notice. She also was in charge of the Team Members’ cafeteria, and although she couldn’t make one serving, she could make a large batch to serve for the team, holding back a serving for our daughter. We didn’t have to do that because shortly after Three Broomsticks opened, which does serve mac & cheese on their kids’ menu. I can’t stress enough how good the park Team Members are with helping you when you have special needs, and that includes dietary.

Contacting Universal Orlando

Last week when I called upon Cathrina, the café manager for her help, and she responded via email that managers and chefs have ingredient lists or can pull a product to look at the labels for what each item contains. She actually went above and beyond by contacting NBC/Universal’s Quality Control Chef Bobby Burdick (who also goes by Chef Bob). One of his roles is to provide information to any guest who has allergies. He gave permission for me to make available his email and cell phone number for guests who are planning their vacations and can contact him directly, as it is easier if guests contact UOR in advance of their visit. Chef Burdick can be emailed at Bob.Burdick@universalorlando.com or call him at 321-388-2123. Since your family is sensitive to several ingredients, I would advise you to contact Chef Burdick. Please make sure you give him adequate time to research your request. Personally, I would question him about the quick-service restaurants and carts since you never know when you’re going to want a quick bite and need no reservation. You can also request information at FoodServiceCUF@universalorlando.com. Although no specific time frame is given, if possible I’d allow at least a 48 hour window to make your reservation and inform the restaurant of your dietary requests.

UOR’s website does address Food Allergies by providing the following information:

Research Dining Options Before You Arrive
As you’re making plans to visit Universal Orlando Resort, browse through the online menus for our theme park restaurants. Acquainting yourself with the available options ahead of time can give you a head start later. If you have any further questions after viewing the menus, you can call 407-224-3463 and speak to a Guests Services Team Member.

Editor’s note: Since Universal does not publish menus for all of their restaurants, we recommend that you browse the restaurants pages in the OI Universal Center, where we provide all menus by way of photos or PDF files.

Check With Restaurants Once You’re Here
If you aren’t able to research dining options ahead of time, don’t worry. You can ask to speak to a chef or manager at any restaurant within Universal Orlando Resort, or at any of our on-site hotels once you’re here. Let them know which guest in your party has a food allergy or intolerance, and what the allergy/intolerance is. Our culinary staff will make every effort to prevent that allergen from coming in contact with any part of that guest’s meal.

It should be noted, however, that Universal Orlando does not have separate food preparation facilities in which to prepare allergen-free foods. There is occasionally the chance that allergens may have been introduced to one or more ingredients before they reached the kitchens at Universal Orlando—and, on other rare occasions—even inadvertently as the food was being prepared.

Bring Your Own Food
You’re also welcome to bring your own food with you if you prefer. Simply notify a Security Team Member performing the security bag check at the front gate that you or a member of your party has a food allergy/intolerance. Please do not bring glass, and items should be contained in a soft-sided cooler.

Universal Orlando guests staying at one of our on-site hotels may keep their food refrigerated in their hotel room. During check-in, ask the Front Desk Clerk for a refrigerator to be placed in your room. Note: there will be a fee of for use of the refrigerator. Your hotel can give you details. The hotel is unable to accept or hold food in its kitchen on behalf of the guest.

The page recommends you research dining options before you arrive. Once you’re at the resort, check with your chosen restaurants at the parks, hotels and CityWalk. Ask to speak with the chef or manager to explain any allergy or intolerance your party member may have. Culinary staff will do their best to make sure that your meal does not come in contact with your allergen, but they also want you to know that their kitchens do not have separate facilities in which to prepare food.

Full-service restaurants

Full-service restaurants are helpful without prior contact, depending upon your need, but be sure and tell your dining reservation team member about your allergies. When we ate at Finnegan’s in Universal Studios Florida, the manager offered to send someone to another restaurant to obtain something our daughter could eat when we found their mashed potatoes included the skins, which causes her to choke. And we can’t say enough about Confisco Grill in Islands of Adventure; they have always prepared their mac & cheese specifically for our daughter and even given her a larger portion since she can’t chew the sides that accompany the dish.

Bring your own food

Yes, you can carry in your own food!  The website info says you should notify the Security team member that you or a member of your family has food allergies when they are checking your bags. We’ve been carrying in food for our daughter for years and have never been questioned. Be advised you can only carry SMALL soft-sided coolers, and it is requested that no containers be made of glass. We’ve also never been questioned about why a single serving can of baked beans or pudding cup is on the table in the restaurants. We used to heat her food and put it in a thermos, but since we’ve found restaurants that serve her favorite mac & cheese, we usually only carry pudding cups and Ensure. Most restaurants do not have microwaves in their kitchens, but after speaking with an assistant park manager a few years ago were given a letter to allow us to use the ovens available at Family Services located at First Aid.

Vegetarian or healthy options

All the restaurants at Universal Orlando offer at least a couple of vegetarian/healthy options, usually salads, chicken, and garden burgers. As you might expect, the quick-service restaurants will have a smaller selection of these options while the full-service restaurants will have a bigger selection. That being said, Universal does mark some of their venues as offering Vegetarian Meals/Healthy Choices, which you can see here (click the image to view a larger version and look for the red apples):

CityWalk is the same story. In terms of their menus, they all are going to offer a mix of healthy and not-so-healthy meals.

If you’d like to do more research, you can browse the restaurants pages in the OI Universal Center, where we provide all menus by way of photos or PDF files.

Hard Rock Hotel’s The Kitchen Restaurant.

For the extreme park-goers like myself, it is hard to leave the park before closing. Unfortunately, there are only so many places you can go for a fourth meal at 12:00am after relaxing a bit in the hotel. After calling around, we finally found out that The Kitchen, located at the Hard Rock Hotel on the Universal property, was still open. Since it was so late, we were not really expecting anything special. We have been here before for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, but we have not been here for a while, so we were excited to pay another visit here.

We arrived to the restaurant, and surprisingly, there were a few people dining (guess they had a long day at Universal as well). Our waiter came and was immediately very polite and helpful, regardless of the time. With our drinks, he brought out the basket of bread. Even though it is just a basket of bread, it was absolutely amazing. In the basket, there was a huge variety of bread, crackers, and things of the like. Usually when I ask for olive oil for my bread, it takes about five to ten minutes, even if there is not a lot of people in the restaurant. He brought the olive oil in about two minutes, which I thought was very impressive.

Taking our order, I informed him on my dietary restrictions (I am a vegan), and he recommended a Pasta Primavera with marinara sauce. My father ordered the Penne Pasta Florentine, and my brother ordered the Margarita Flatbread. Along with the helpfulness, our waiter also always kept a smile and was very funny and personable (I would recommend him by name but I actually forgot the name).

The food came out relatively quickly (about twenty minutes). My pasta was very tasty, and the sauce was practically perfect. The vegetables were fresh and the noodles were boiled to perfection. According to my father, his pasta was also superb. He added chicken to his dish, which he said added a lot of flavor but was not completely necessary. He really enjoyed the flavor of the dish. My brother was very satisfied with the flatbread. It was basically a pizza, but a really good one at that. He stated that the cheese was perfectly melted, and it needed no extra cheese or salt. We were all very happy with our meals.

The check came out to a little more than we were expecting (around fifty-five dollars for three people), but it was an overall very good experience.

Unfortunately my photos from the evening did not turn out, so Dan is lending some of his for this post. Here is Dan’s wife and his daughter during their own recent visit to The Kitchen at Hard Rock.

Wantilan Brunch at Loews Royal Pacific Resort.

Chefs at Loews Royal Pacific Resort are creating a brunch that fits perfectly with what Sundays are meant to be: a time to relax, unwind, enjoy a good meal and spend time with family and friends. Sunday Brunch at the Wantilan launches March 11 and continues through June 24 in the outdoor Wantilan Pavilion.

“We set out to create a brunch experience that is laid back and fun, while featuring a delicious, chef-inspired selection on the buffet,” says General Manager Larry Beiderman. “People can come in their shorts, bring the kids and enjoy live music while they relax in our tropical paradise.”

The new Sunday brunch takes place in the hotel’s Polynesian-themed outdoor Wantilan pavilion, designed to reflect the natural beauty of the South Pacific and the graciousness of island hospitality. Featured buffet items include roasted Hawaiian honey-glazed ham, sesame-crusted salmon, spiced chicken breast, potato hash with eggs sunny side up, Tahitian French toast, Applewood smoked bacon, Portuguese sausage, salads, desserts, champagne or mimosas, plus a children’s buffet with kid-friendly favorites. Live entertainment traces the roots of Hawaiian music and dance, and encourages the audience to take part.

View the Sunday Brunch at the Wantilan menu below, or download the PDF file here: http://bit.ly/SBW12menu (PDF file).

Registration begins at noon, with brunch and live music from 12:30 – 2:00 pm. Reservations can be made by phone at 407-503-DINE (3463) or on-line at http://bit.ly/OTRWL.

On our recent trip to Orlando, NBA City was tops on the dining wishlist for our sports-loving teenage son. After an exciting day at Universal Studios, it was off to CityWalk for a basketball-themed evening meal.

The 33 foot statue that is featured as the focal point to the entrance of the building can’t help but instantly impress fans of all ages:

NBA City at Universal CityWalk in Orlando.

Adjacent to the doorway, various basketballs adorn the exterior featuring the hand prints of some of the NBA’s most notable stars. The theming is carried throughout the property, even into the washrooms, where the garbage cans are each adorned with basketball nets so you can “slam dunk” your trash.

Their on-site store and gift shop offers an extensive selection of merchandise for every team in the league. From jerseys and t-shirts to a selection of unique gifts and souvenirs, basketball enthusiasts will find everything they need here.

NBA City at Universal CityWalk in Orlando.

Looking for a little recreation before or after your meal? Consider shooting some hoops at their outdoor 3-point area. The cost to play is $8 per person, but your talents can “net” you anything from a discount at the on-site photo studio to a custom jersey of your choice, depending on how many balls you’re able to hoop. The fun continues indoors as well, where there are a selection of basketball-themed and arcade style games adjacent to the gift shop. The on-site souvenir photo studio allows you to have your picture taken with your favourite player or coach using special computer-generated enhancements at a price that’s within reason.

When we finally gave into our hunger and abandoned our exploration, we were seated immediately and greeted by an energetic, young server. She was prompt and attentive and had a cheerful disposition. If I could fault her at all, it was the fact that she tried to talk us out of our original menu selections…..much as I am sure she was trying to be helpful, we really did just want some standard pub food. For those desiring an entree with more flair than one of the signature hamburgers, their menu included steak, pork and pasta options at a variety of price points.

Overall, the meal quality was fine. Nothing deserving of special praise, but the taste was good and portions were large. Dinner for three including non-alcoholic beverages, an appetizer tray to share, and no desserts totaled $84.00 including tax and tip.

Large screen televisions are easily visible throughout the two-level seating area, allowing patrons to catch the big game while they enjoy their meal. Murals and an assortment of other memorabilia adorn the walls giving guests a fully immersive basketball experience.

For NBA fans young and old, this restaurant is a “do not miss”, simply for the atmosphere alone. The meal will be more than satisfactory, and the service will not disappoint. We give it a winning score!

The Pad Thai at Mythos inside Universal’s Islands of Adventure.

Dining at theme parks is an important part of your Orlando vacation. Good planning will make sure the least amount of obstacles get in the way of enjoying yourself. First of all, no matter what you do, there’s always going to be hazards with eating meals at a theme park. You may be with picky eaters. You may have to try and figure out where you are going to be and what you want to eat 180 days away from now. In today’s column we will look at what happens when you cross that restaurant rubicon with one of the most challenging patrons they encounter – the vegetarian.

There are several types of vegetarians. The one type most people think of when they think of a vegetarian is an “lacto-ovo-vegetarian.” These are people who choose not to eat any type of animal meat (fish, beef, pork, chicken) but who include eggs and dairy products in their diet. A “Pescatarian” is a type of vegetarian who chooses to avoid eating meat with the exception of fish. A “vegan” is a vegetarian who chooses not to eat or drink any product that has any animal derived products. This means they do not eat meat, fish, cheese, or drink milk. We could parse further distinctions and classifications of veggie diets, but the vast majority of vegetarians will fit into one of the aforementioned categories.

For our recent trip to Universal Studios, my party included one lacto-ovo-vegetarian, two pescatarians, and one vegan. (There’s a joke in there somewhere, but we’ll keep moving.) Now, if you’ve ever been out to a restaurant with a vegetarian or vegan in the real world, you’ll know that oftentimes, these diners are relegated to the salad bar as their only vegetarian option. Thankfully, vegetarian diets have become much more popular in recent years, and so restaurants and theme parks alike are expanding their menus to accommodate such guests.

Universal Orlando Resort has some decent-to-great choices for vegetarians. Please note that pretty much any sit-down restaurant on Universal property will have a choice of a salad, so those food items won’t be highlighted here for you. I’m also not including vegetarian-friendly side dishes that you can order (such as french fries, baked potatoes, or the great cheese bites at NBC Sports Grill & Brew). And lastly, I’m not including fish dishes, as the menus for Bubba Gump Shrimp Co or Pat O’Brien’s would be printed almost in their entirety (plus, we all know pescatarians aren’t real vegetarians anyway, right?).

Each of the three on-site hotels at Universal Orlando has a CLUB LEVEL. I cannot recommend this more if you are traveling with a vegetarian or vegan. Throughout the day there are high quality foods available to choose from. Breakfast has a great fruit platter and various pastries (and soy milk for coffee). Snacks at lunchtime and regularly a fruit and or veggie based platter at night. All the vegetarians in our party ate like kings in the club lounge and would consider the offerings to be just as good as almost any restaurant on property or out in the Real World.

The club level lounge at Royal Pacific Resort offers great options for vegetarians.
The club level lounge at Royal Pacific Resort offers great options for vegetarians.

The best bet overall goes to MYTHOS in Islands of Adventure. It is a restaurant that has a lot of hype and deservedly so. Not only is the atmosphere absolutely incredible, the food is top notch as well. The vegan pad thai (see the photo at the top of the post) got rave reviews from both that ordered it and the chef’s pizza was best pizza I have had in any theme park restaurant. It doesn’t take a “foodie” to tell the difference between eateries that use high quality ingredients, and those that just truck in frozen junk and reheat it. Go out of your way to try Mythos on your next trip.
