One year ago today, Universal Orlando Resort opened the gates to Universal Epic Universe, and theme park history was made.

In honor of the milestone, we joined a small media session with Jeff Polk, Executive Vice President and General Manager of Universal Epic Universe. Polk reflected on the park’s first year, how guests have shaped its evolution, and what the future holds for one of the most ambitious theme park projects ever built.

Whether you’re a die-hard Universal fan or simply love the art of theme park design, this is a conversation you won’t want to miss.

Thank you to Universal Orlando Resort for the invitation to participate in this special media opportunity.

The Chronos at Universal Epic Universe
The Chronos at Universal Epic Universe

A Career Thirty-Seven Years in the Making

Jeff Polk has been with Universal Orlando Resort for over 35 years. That alone tells you something about what this project meant to him. Polk spent close to the past decade leading the development of Epic Universe, a project he described as one of the rarest accomplishments in the theme park industry.

“I think with this park more than any, from where we started almost 10 years ago to where we came today, we pretty much made it all the way,” he said. “We set out on a mission to do something, and then we actually accomplished that something.” He added that the recognition from peers and others across the business has been “sometimes overwhelming.”

The park’s footprint puts the scale in perspective: the Epic Universe site is roughly the same size as the combined property of Universal Studios Florida and Universal Islands of Adventure, which opened in 1990 and 1999 respectively and have been growing ever since.  “This is a long-haul proposition,” Polk said. The story of what this park will eventually become is still just getting started.

The Details Almost No One Notices Are the Ones That Matter Most

One of the most striking themes in our conversation was Polk’s belief that true immersion isn’t built through the big moments alone. It’s built through the things guests almost never consciously register.

Polk pointed to the individual roses on the scrolling ironwork at Frankenstein’s Manor in Dark Universe as a prime example: small, easy to miss, but exactly the kind of detail that makes the park feel personal. The philosophy runs throughout the entire park, from the way plants on one side are lush and alive while on the other they’re dead and withered, to the dragon transformation details woven throughout How to Train Your Dragon – Isle of Berk. These aren’t accidents. They’re deliberate decisions, knowing some guests may not notice them at first. And often they don’t, until later. “They get home, they look at the photo, and they go, ‘Oh, I didn’t notice this thing was happening over here,'” Polk said.

That’s exactly the point. Polk described the park as being designed around “more intimacy, more immediate immersion, more personal attachment to the experiences in front of you,” so that guests feel like any place they are in the park is their spot, somewhere they can make meaningful to them and to the story Universal is telling.

“It makes it feel so personal and so intimate that it connects you to the place in this kind of organic way,” he said, “and makes you want to share that with others and come back and see if you can discover other things.”

Those layers of quiet detail are what Polk credits with setting Epic apart. “Those are the important things that have really, I think, really put Epic in a whole new space.”

A Layout Unlike Anything Else on Earth

Many guests describe Epic Universe as unlike any park they’ve been to before, and Polk said the layout is a big part of why.

“There’s no other park in the world that’s laid out like Epic’s laid out, where you’ve got this big central space, and then you’ve got these portals really taking you off to these zones,” he said. He clarified that while it shares some DNA with a hub-and-spoke model, “there’s no wagon wheel to go around the outside.”

Underlying all of it was a simple philosophy: “I think the stories dictate how the park should be designed.” Guest services follow the same logic, integrated throughout the park rather than clustered at the front gate, a model built on lessons learned from Universal Volcano Bay.

Celestial Park at Night Keeps Surprising Everyone

If you haven’t experienced Epic Universe after dark, put it at the top of your list.

Celestial Park is home to 7 million color-changing, individually programmable LED lights, and Polk said the nighttime response has been one of the biggest surprises of the park’s first year. “Some things that were a little bit more intense than I expected were how much people really love the nighttime lights in Celestial Park,” he said.

What struck him most was what guests chose to do with that experience. “I’ve never been in a park where people are more enamored with just being in the environment and not doing anything,” Polk said. “Guests are more than willing to just come and sit and watch versus even feeling like they’ve got to go tick all the boxes.”

It was enough to change how the team thought about operating hours. Rather than following the traditional off-season playbook of closing earlier, Epic went the other way. The reason, in Polk’s words, was simple: “Our guests want to be in the park at night.”

Water plays a big role in that magic, too, from Astronomica to the Cosmos Fountain show. Polk described it as creating moments that are Instagrammable, yes, but more than that, genuinely memorable in a way that belongs to you.

Guests Are Shaping the Characters as Much as the Park Shaped Them

One of the most delightful parts of our conversation was hearing how guest behavior has directly influenced the park’s evolving cast of characters.

“What we’re starting to discover from our guests are all these very intimate storytelling moments, like Ygor, which, who knew that was going to happen,” Polk said. Ygor is a character found in Dark Universe, and his unexpected popularity is a perfect example of how guests are forming bonds with even the smallest corners of the park. That fan love has extended to The Plastered Owl, a bar in Celestial Park that has taken on a life of its own. “We’re now producing t-shirts that have The Plastered Owl on the front of them because that’s become a thing.”

Polk said the team is paying close attention to those fan-driven moments as part of Epic’s second-year focus. “Those things we’re really trying to lean into and give that back to the fans that are here telling us that they want more and more of those sorts of end-to-end things.”

That extends to every corner of the park. The flying dragons are another guest favorite. When they appear before the showtimes of The Untrainable Dragon, Polk said it’s intentional: a hint to guests of what’s coming. New character appearances are always joining the mix, too. Yoshi has been making temporary appearances, and Captain Cacao is making his meet-and-greet public debut today, on the park’s one-year anniversary. “We just introduced Captain Cacao to the world,” Polk said, “and he’s actually downstairs right now interacting with team members.”

The seasonal experience is growing alongside it. Polk said they “added holiday decor and are probably going to amp that up a little bit more this year,” framing it as part of Epic’s broader push to build on what guests have responded to most. “We did a few things last year. We’re going to continue to add to that this year,” he said, hinting at a larger offering across entertainment, food, and atmosphere as the park heads into its second holiday season.

Live entertainment is a growing priority heading into year two. “Live entertainment, by the way, huge piece,” Polk said. “Big supporter, big believer in the ability to produce still high-quality live entertainment.” He added, “I love our two shows,” (Le Cirque Arcanus in The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Ministry of Magic and The Untrainable Dragon in How to Train Your Dragon – Isle of Berk) and made clear that the performers across every world of the park are something he takes particular pride in.

Food Goes Far Beyond What You’d Expect

Epic Universe’s food program was designed to feel personal rather than mass-market, and Polk said that was entirely intentional. “We want the food program to not feel mass market,” he said, with real plates, real silverware, and seasonally rotating menus all in service of that goal. “Those things are on purpose because we want guests to feel like they’re having a very personal experience in a very large space.”

Some of those bets paid off in unexpected ways. “Mac and Cheese Cones. Who knew people were going to go crazy for those things?” Polk said with a laugh. The bar program is also expanding, with private barrel bourbons and local brewery partnerships in the works.

Balancing Attendance With the Experience Guests Deserve

Polk was candid about how deliberately Epic has managed access in its first year. “We’ve been spending a lot of time being very cautious and very purposeful about how many people we let in, what type of experience we can get them,” he said. That approach shaped the ticketing rollout, starting with single-day tickets before evolving to multi-day, multi-park options.

On annual passes, Polk was direct about the challenge: “The issue with annual passholders is a tricky one.” Universal has a large existing passholder base, and integrating them thoughtfully takes time. “We’re being very, very deliberate about how we roll those things out so that we don’t overstep our capability,” he said, while making the intent clear: “Of course, we want our passholders to have access.” Discounted ticket products for passholders are already in place in the meantime.

What He Hopes Guests Are Still Saying Years From Now

When asked what he hopes the second year of Universal Epic Universe accomplishes, Polk’s answer was rooted in something deeper than rides or technology.

It comes back to the details. The care. The idea that a guest can visit five, ten, fifteen times and still find something new: a piece of ironwork they hadn’t noticed, a plant they’d walked past a dozen times, a moment that suddenly clicks into place. “So even with this coming week, we’re not going out and promoting this wildly, but we’re doing a bunch of really cool first anniversary merchandise offerings,” Polk said, “stuff I’ve seen that I really want myself.”

For someone who has spent over 35 years with Universal Orlando Resort and nine years bringing this specific park to life, the opening of Epic Universe isn’t just a professional milestone. It’s the culmination of a career spent in the service of the idea that a theme park, done right, can be something truly extraordinary.

One thing’s for sure… it’s been one epic year.

If you’re planning a trip to Universal Epic Universe, one of the first places you’ll encounter is Celestial Park—an all-original world that exists outside the bounds of time and space. Unlike the movie-inspired portals around the park, Celestial Park is a completely new creation filled with surreal landscapes, cosmic wonders, and larger-than-life personalities. Among this original cast of characters at Epic Universe is Captain Cacao, a charming and adventurous bear who’s quickly becoming a fan favorite.

As one of the legendary Celestians—beings who were either born in or drawn to the wondrous world of Celestial Park—Captain Cacao brings whimsy and wonder to Epic Universe. Ready to unwrap the story of this small but mighty hero? You’re in the right place!

Who is Epic Universe’s Captain Cacao?

You may have found yourself wandering into Moonship Chocolates & Celestial Sweets—and honestly, how could you resist? As you walk in, you’ll immediately spot a darling teddy bear with a star over his right eye and a captain’s hat perched atop his fuzzy head. That’s none other than Captain Cacao! But how did this adorable traveler end up in Celestial Park?

With the help of another Celestian—a curious and adventurous girl named Maya of the Skies—Captain Cacao explores the cosmos. Maya travels aboard her enchanted Moonship, the Marshmallow Airship Joei de Ganache, powered by star-shaped floating marshmallows. And yes, you can board this vessel yourself when you step inside Moonship Chocolate & Celestial Sweets at Epic Universe.

Driven by a passion for discovering the finest flavors, Maya soars through the stars in search of the best ingredients the universe has to offer. By her side through every journey is her best friend and the Airship’s loyal captain—Captain Cacao himself. Legend has it that Captain Cacao learned navigation skills just so he could help Maya on her adventures across the universe.

With all this talk of delectable sweets, it makes you wonder if Captain Cacao has run into Penelope and Jaques from Toothsome Chocolate Emporium & Savory Feast Kitchen on his travels!

Before stepping into Moonship Chocolate & Celestial Sweets, don’t forget to look up—you’ll spot the legendary Moonship soaring above, with its intrepid crew: Captain Cacao and Maya of the Skies. Inside the shop, alongside an irresistible array of sweet treats, keep an eye out for charming nods to Captain Cacao throughout the space.

One of the most delightful hidden details inside Moonship Chocolate & Celestial Sweets is a series of miniature doors embedded in one of the shop’s walls. The largest belongs to Maya, the mid-sized door is for Captain Cacao, and the tiniest is marked “M.L.” – short for Major Lolli, a feisty sugar glider who helps keep the Moonship prepped and ready to go.

Another fascinating find is Captain Cacao’s map, which is displayed inside the shop. This chart reveals all the mysterious places where Captain Cacao and Maya gather their delectable ingredients for all the confections offered in the shop. Just to the left of the register, you’ll also find a case filled with unique artifacts collected during their travels.

And of course, beyond the amazing treats, you can bring home Captain Cacao merchandise—including a plushie, bucket hat, or backpack to commemorate your visit to Epic Universe.

So the next time you step into Moonship Chocolate & Celestial Sweets, keep your eyes peeled for all these charming details—and who knows? You might just find yourself swept up in Captain Cacao’s next great adventure across the stars!

Well, Universal Orlando Resort’s newest theme park is no different! We’re uncovering the top Epic Universe secrets, hidden gems, and fun facts that make this destination a next-level experience.

Not only are there unique finds in each portal, but some secrets tie the entire park together—giving Epic Universe the distinct charm of truly feeling like its own world. There are countless hidden details for those well-versed in Universal lore, but we’ve narrowed it down to our top 15. Let’s take a look!

Secrets in Epic Universe’s Celestial Park

Flux Capacitor on Stardust Racers at Epic Universe

You might be thinking, Celestial Park is a newly imagined area, so what hidden gems could there possibly be? Quite a few, actually! From beloved Easter eggs to clever nods to Universal history, here are some details you won’t want to miss:

  • Earl the Squirrel: Inside Northstar Wintry Wonders (look for the falling snow out front), you can spot Earl the Squirrel not once, but twice! Look up to see a conveyor belt of toys that includes an Earl the Squirrel plush. Follow the belt to a screen where the toys are loaded into Santa’s sleigh… and yes, Earl makes it aboard!
  • Flux Capacitor on Stardust Racers: Each coaster vehicle for Stardust Racers sports a Flux Capacitor on the back, a nod to the Back to the Future franchise. While the ride feels like it could hit 88 mph, it actually tops out at 62 mph. The ride’s backstory explains that a certain time-traveling doctor once visited Celestial Park and donated his advanced tech to stabilize the racing comets.
  • Celestial Park Tales: Many stores, restaurants, and attractions in Celestial Park have their own unique lore explaining their origins. You can uncover these stories by checking out each location’s individual guide (Start here!)

Next up, get those Power-Up Bands on, because we’re headed to SUPER NINTENDO WORLD! If you’re a fan of Nintendo, you know that they are beyond detail-oriented — and this land is filled with secrets and nods to the games you love. Here are a few of our favorite hidden details:

  • Shrinking Hallway: On the upper level, you’ll come across a room with a mischievous Bob-omb. As it “explodes” on-screen, the walls, bricks, and power-up blocks suddenly appear larger — that’s because you’ve shrunk, just like in the Super Mario Bros. games! Solve the puzzle at the end of the hall, and you’ll be rewarded with a mushroom to restore your size.
  • Pikmin on the Loose: These adorable plant-like creatures from Nintendo’s Pikmin games are hidden all around this realm. Look for them near the portal to SUPER NINTENDO WORLD, in the Mine-Cart Madness queue mural, and even near the Nintendo Super Star Store in Celestial Park. How many can you spot?
  • Bowser’s Autographed Portrait: Inside the queue for Mario Kart: Bowser’s Challenge, one portrait of Bowser features a special autograph from Shigeru Miyamoto, the legendary creator behind Mario, The Legend of Zelda, Donkey Kong, and Pikmin.

Fun Facts from Epic Universe’s Dark Universe

Ygor roaming Darkmoor

Now, get out your garlic bulbs and wooden stakes, because we’re heading to the village of Darkmoor. This entire area is packed with hidden details and easter eggs, but here are a few of our favorites:

  • Maria’s Memorial: In the graveyard at the entrance (where you might even spot Dr. Victoria Frankenstein’s assistant, Ygor, wandering), look for a statue of a young girl holding flowers in her dress. This is a touching nod to Maria from the original Frankenstein film—an accidental victim of Frankenstein’s Monster—serving as a quiet memorial to one of Universal’s most tragic characters.
  • The Darkmoor Well: The village is said to be built above catacombs where vampires dwell. The well outside Das Stakehaus emits fog by day, but glows ominous red at night to signal that the vampires have awoken. Look closer, and you’ll spot spikes for “feeding” those below, plus a Latin inscription on the metal band that translates to: “Never forget that you exist by our will alone.” Guess that’s the vampire way of saying welcome?
  • The Number 428: Spotted throughout Darkmoor, this number is a nod to Carl Laemmle Jr.’s birthday (April 28). As the son of Universal Studios’ founder and the producer behind multiple original Universal Monster movies, his legacy is honored here. Look for “428” on a brick wall across from Das Stakehaus and again on the radio in Pretorius’ Scientific Oddities.

Easter Eggs Revealed from The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Ministry of Magic

Le Gobelet Noir at Universal Epic Universe's The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Ministry of Magic
Le Gobelet Noir at Universal Epic Universe’s The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Ministry of Magic

Just like Darkmoor, The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Ministry of Magic is teeming with fun finds that fans of the Boy Who Lived will love!

  • Muggle vs. Magical Posters: As you enter through the portal into 1920s Paris, the walls are covered in posters meant for Muggles. Once you pass through the archway, and the ads shift to magical ones promoting everything from frog choir auditions to warnings about not confronting Grindelwald—or using the Eiffel Tower as a portkey! Don’t speak French? Grab a translation app and see what else you can discover! One mural needs no translation: a massive vintage perfume ad to your right as you enter. This is an earlier version of Divine Magic, the same wizarding fragrance featured in King’s Cross Station and Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.
  • A Dark Detail: At the first house on Rue Cachee, you’ll occasionally see a green light glowing in the window—a clear sign of the Killing Curse in The Wizarding World. This is believed to be the site of Grindelwald’s first crimes. Look closely in the other windows and you’ll spot the eerie skull pipe he used in the Fantastic Beasts films.
  • Secrets of Le Goblet Noir: On a lighter note, if you decide to dine at Le Goblet Noir (and you should), take a moment to look around! Since Nicolas Flamel lives above the tavern, references to the Sorcerer’s Stone and Deathly Hallows are sprinkled throughout. Spot the Deathly Hallows symbol hanging in the corner and the Three Brothers puppets from The Tale of the Three Brothers, like those seen in the Diagon Alley puppet show.

Secrets in Epic Universe’s How to Train Your Dragon – Isle of Berk

Mead Hall at Epic Universe's How to Train Your Dragon – Isle of Berk

Now we’ll glide our way to Isle of Berk. According to Senior Creative Director Katy Pacitti, this area is more about immersive details than hidden Easter eggs—but we still uncovered some fun finds for you.

  • A Sweet Personal Touch: Universal often slips in nods to the creatives who help bring the parks to life. Inside the How to Treat Your Dragon shop, look toward the upper displays to spot “Katy’s Kandy’s,” a reference to Senior Creative Director Katy Pacitti herself!
  • Tug-of-War: Among Berk’s many dragons (including Cloudjumper, Hiccup’s mom’s dragon, who alternates between being asleep and awake), you’ll find two adorable baby dragons playing tug-of-war with a fish. This playful moment is a fun callback to other Universal attractions—like two dinos fighting over a shirt on Jurassic Park River Adventure and a pair battling over a slice at Pizza Predatoria in Islands of Adventure.
  • Gothi’s Perch: When visiting Mead Hall, don’t forget to look up—way up! Above the grand 16-foot-7-inch doors is the hut of Gothi, the silent village elder. You’ll spot her standing outside, keeping a watchful eye over the entire Isle of Berk, dragons and Vikings alike.

We hope you’ve enjoyed these little Easter Eggs and fun finds. Besides the exciting rides and attractions, one way to enjoy Epic Universe is to take a moment to look and listen. You might hear jazz drifting through the streets of The Wizarding World, catch a secret conversation in Dark Universe, or spot a clever detail high above your head. Every corner of Epic Universe is packed with surprises that make it feel truly alive—and who knows, maybe you’ll even discover a few secrets of your own!

The sun is shining, the daily afternoon thunderstorms are rolling through, and you can’t be outside for more than 20 minutes without being completely drenched in sweat. Summer has arrived in Central Florida, and it’s here to stay. Visiting the theme parks this time of year isn’t just about navigating rides and attractions—it’s also about staying cool while doing it. To help you make the most of your day, here are our top tips for beating the heat at Universal Epic Universe.

Universal Epic Universe

Essentials to Beat the Heat at Universal’s Epic Universe

One of the simplest yet most crucial things you can do to prepare for the Florida heat is to pack smart for the day ahead.

  • Bring refillable water bottles – Take advantage of the free water available at Coke Freestyle machines throughout the park.
  • Pack electrolyte packets – These are great for quick hydration and can help you bounce back faster from the Florida heat.
  • Don’t forget sunscreen – A must-have to protect your skin from sunburn during long days outdoors.
  • Wear a hat or bring an umbrella – These offer shade from the sun and can provide cover during the frequent afternoon rain showers.
  • Use a portable fan or cooling towel – Perfect for staying cool and comfortable while exploring everything Universal Epic Universe has to offer.

All of these can easily fit into a small park bag that does not take up too much room or effort to carry.

What to Wear to Stay Comfortable in the Heat

When going to a theme park, it is important to be prepared for a full day of walking and activity. Dress in lightweight, breathable clothing to stay cool and avoid heavy fabrics like jeans or hoodies, which can trap heat and become uncomfortable. Wear supportive, broken-in shoes to prevent blisters and bring an extra pair of socks in case your feet get wet or you need additional cushioning.

How to Avoid Peak Heat Times at Universal Epic Universe

Mornings and evenings are typically the coolest parts of the day, making them ideal for exploring the park. To avoid the peak heat, consider taking a break between noon and 3 p.m.

The Oak and Star Tavern at Epic Universe's Celestial Park

If you’re able, head back to the hotel and enjoy the pool or take a nice nap. If you are not staying on Universal property, use this time to take a lunch break somewhere cool and shaded with air conditioning. Some of our favorite dining options include The Oak and Star Tavern, Toadstool Cafe, Mead Hall, Café L’air De La Sirène, and Das Stakehaus.

Smart Ways to Take a Break from the Sun

Staying cool is key during the summer months at Universal Epic Universe—and luckily, there are plenty of fun ways to do just that! If you’re looking for a quick break from the sun, consider catching one of the incredible shows in the park. The Untrainable Dragon located in How to Train Your Dragon – Isle of Berk and Le Cirque Arcanus in The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Ministry of Magic each offer around 20 minutes of entertainment, shade, and refreshing air conditioning.

Monsters Unchained: The Frankenstein Experiment at Epic Universe's Dark Universe

Already seen both shows? No problem! Head to a ride with a mostly indoor queue, giving you a cool escape while you wait. Great options include Harry Potter and the Battle at the Ministry, Monsters Unchained: The Frankenstein Experiment, and Mario Kart: Bowser’s Challenge.

“Cool” Things to Do When It’s Hot at Universal Epic Universe

Epic Universe has some unique activities to help keep you cool during some scorching days.

In Celestial Park, kids (and kids at heart) will love Astronomica, a splash pad perfect for beating the heat while having a blast.

Over in How to Train Your Dragon – Isle of Berk, Fyre Drill is an interactive boat ride that’s sure to leave you smiling—and soaked!

Craving something refreshing? Frosty Moon has delicious ice cream soft serve options that are sure to satisfy every sweet tooth. Right next door, Celestiki offers frozen cocktails that are perfect for guests 21 and up looking to chill out in style.

Vegan and Vegetarian Food in Celestial Park at Epic Universe

Celestial Park, the main hub of Epic Universe, has quite a few dining options that are sure to satisfy, especially for our vegetarian and plant-based friends.

Pizza Moon

A very popular star in the constellation of Celestial Park is Pizza Moon. Believe me when I tell you, this is not your ordinary pizza place. Each pie is perfectly portioned for one, but with so many tempting options on the menu, sharing is definitely the way to go if you want to sample more than one flavor.

The vegan option at Pizza Moon is the Harvest Moon — a truly appetizing choice. It features a tomato sauce base topped with grilled artichokes, Divina tomatoes, roasted peppers, Castelvetrano olives, and a handful of fresh arugula. Simply divine!

The Giant Mushroom

For our vegetarian travelers, there are a few heavenly options — including my personal favorite so far, The Giant Mushroom. This flavorful pie features roasted garlic béchamel, fromage de lune, wild mushrooms, truffle aioli, and parsley.

Another standout is The Nanarossa, Pizza Moon’s take on a classic Margherita. It’s made with a tomato sauce base, fresh mozzarella, stracciatella, heirloom tomatoes, and fresh basil.

If pasta is more your thing, check out this vegetarian-friendly offering: Pink Moon alla Vodka. It includes a unique pasta, cheese-stuffed Triangoletti, with a spicy tomato cream sauce and topped with fromage de lune. If you’re a cheese lover like I am, this is sure to be a favorite!

Looking for something on the lighter side? Vegetarians can also enjoy the crisp and refreshing Moon Cheese Caesar Salad, featuring chopped romaine, crunchy Moon Cheese, Caesar dressing, and grated Parmesan.

Last but not least is the fruit-forward Lunar Phase Cake, a delightful dessert featuring Meyer lemon olive oil cake, a splash of limoncello, juicy blackberries, and crunchy raspberry crisps.

Meteor Astropub

For another quick-service bite in Celestial Park, Meteor Astropub is a stellar choice. Beer lovers will appreciate the impressive drink selection, and the vegan and vegetarian offerings are just as noteworthy.

Vegan selections include the handheld Vegan Sausage and Peppers, including plant-based sausage, pepperonata, basil aioli, and arugula on a toasted roll. Other vegan options include the wasabi pub fries, regular pub fries, and a side salad.

For our vegetarian friends, check out the Grilled Fourmaggio. The most out-of-this-world grilled cheese sandwich you’ll ever have, with sharp cheddar, smoked cheddar, basil goat cheese, and American cheese with a side of tomato bisque.

Vegetarians can also enjoy the dessert menu, including the Astronomer’s Shortcake Skillet, which features delicious strawberry ice cream, a warm biscuit, and strawberry and cream crumbs. Also, don’t miss the Atlas’ Chocolate Cake, which combines marshmallow fluff, chocolate cream, toasted almonds, and whipped topping.

Oak & Star Tavern

Next up is Oak & Star Tavern, a quick-service spot known for its mouthwatering BBQ. But don’t worry — even if you’re skipping the meat, there are some delicious vegan and vegetarian options here that are sure to satisfy your taste buds!

Nothing starts a good day at the parks like a filling breakfast. Vegan and vegetarian diners can begin their day off right with the Ancient Grain Tofu Scramble, which includes ancient grains, tomato pepper stew, tofu, and arugula. Craving a nice, crispy piece of bacon? They’ve got you covered with a vegan bacon side that hits the spot!

For lunch, we have a mouthwatering BBQ Jackfruit Sandwich with four-hour-smoked jackfruit, pickled red onions, and chimichurri on a toasted bun! If you want some sides, Oak & Star also offers braised greens, tropical coleslaw, mango bread, BBQ crinkle fries, smoked Harissa cauliflower, and for vegetarians, the three-cheese mac and cheese.

Looking for something fresh? The Grilled Peach Arugula Salad is a vibrant choice for vegetarians. Plus, when it’s time for dessert, don’t miss the creamy Banana Pudding or the indulgent Warm Sticky Cake, perfectly paired with pecan ice cream for a sweet finish.

Frosty Moon

Never fear, vegan travelers—you have options for dessert as well! Head over to Frosty Moon, where you can indulge in a vegan chocolate chip cookie and a vegan vanilla ice cream! Each guest can pick an ice cream flavor and two toppings. Vegetarians can try it all, but the vegan toppings include Oreo crumble and birthday sprinkles.

Comet Dogs

One of the smaller food stands in Celestial Park, Comet Dogs, is easy to overlook — but don’t pass it by! They offer a tasty vegan- and vegetarian-friendly option: the Smoky Carrot Dog. It’s a tantalizing slow-roasted glazed carrot with vegan feta and microgreens inside of a cosmic purple ube bun!

Atlantic

Now let’s explore the full-service dining options in Celestial Park, starting with Atlantic. This gorgeous Victorian-style eatery nestled in the heart of Epic Universe offers some of the best views of the lagoon, Universal Helios Grand Hotel, and the surrounding Celestial Park.

For starters, vegans and vegetarians can enjoy the King Oyster Mushroom Ceviche. This sans-seafood offering has all the refreshing flavors of ceviche, but with king oyster mushrooms. The dish is rounded out with tomato, jicama, and lime.

The soup and salad menu is packed with vegetarian-friendly choices — cool, crisp, and full of flavor! If you’re looking for a vegan version, be sure to ask a Team Member if modifications can be made to accommodate your needs. Here are a few standout salads to check out:

  • House Seasonal Salad: A mix of baby beets, goat cheese, frisée, peach oat crumble, and blood orange vinaigrette.
  • Hearts of Palm Caesar Salad: Cool romaine, parmesan crisps, hearts of palm, crunchy focaccia croutons, and a parmesan black pepper dressing.
  • Tomato Burrata Salad: Two of my favorite ingredients in one delicious dish: ripe heirloom tomatoes and creamy burrata, paired with arugula and a white balsamic dressing.

Prefer a bowl of soup? Check out the Sweet Corn Chowder featuring sweet Florida-grown corn, celery root, potatoes, Sweety Drop Peppers, and baby basil.

As if those options weren’t tempting enough, let’s move on to the entrées!

Romesco Romanesco
Romesco Romanesco from Universal Epic Universe’s Atlantic

For vegans and vegetarians alike, you are in for a treat with the Romesco Romanesco. This dish stars the visually stunning, fractal-shaped Romanesco broccoli, oven-roasted to perfection and served with hazelnut romesco sauce, fregola, wild mushrooms, and delicate pea tendrils.

Here, vegetarian guests have plenty of irresistible desserts to choose from.

Try the Piña Colada Panna Cotta, a tropical delight made with coconut panna cotta, Malibu rum–marinated pineapple, and topped with a light coconut meringue.

El Pulpo from Universal Epic Universe's Atlantic

Or indulge in El Pulpo, a rich and creamy cheesecake paired with berry espuma, pistachio sponge cake, graham cracker crumble, fresh raspberries, and a swirl of raspberry gel.

Diners can also enjoy the unique Passion Fruit “Caviar” — don’t worry, the caviar is made entirely from passion fruit! This inventive dessert features chocolate pain de gênes, hazelnut crunch, Jivara mousse, and the bright, fruit-forward passion fruit caviar.

Landlubber's Snickerdoodle Loot at Universal Epic Universe's Atlantic

And last but not least, the Landlubber’s Snickerdoodle Loot. This treasure includes Snickerdoodle cake, cookie butter ganache, and Biscoff sand. Yarr!

The Blue Dragon Pan-Asian Restaurant

What is sure to be one of the most popular eateries in Celestial Park and maybe all of Epic Universe is this incredible full-service restaurant. Located at the edge of Celestial Park, right in front of the stunning Universal Helios Grand Hotel, The Blue Dragon Pan-Asian Restaurant is hard to miss, with its magnificent blue dragon entryway inviting guests inside. Once you step through, you’ll find a delicious menu filled with Chinese, Japanese, and Thai-inspired cuisine. Vegan and vegetarian travelers will also be pleased to discover a variety of thoughtfully crafted dishes just for them.

Smashed Cucumbers
Smashed Cucumbers from Universal Epic Universe’s The Blue Dragon Pan-Asian Restaurant

Starting with the small plates, vegans can enjoy the Smashed Cucumbers, which are actually more sliced than smashed, but these refreshing cucumbers are tossed with a dragon sauce, topped with fresh cilantro and peanuts, and a touch of Sichuan dust to round it all out.

Love those flavors, but craving noodles too? Go for the Cold Noodles dish! It features the same deliciously dressed cucumbers and toppings, served over a bed of chilled noodles — a perfect, cooling option for a hot day in the parks.

From the dim sum menu, check out the Vegetable Spring Roll, which includes fresh veggies and a house-made dipping sauce!

For the big plates section, Blue Dragon offers a vegan-friendly option called Kai-Ming’s Mapu Tofu. This satisfying dish has vegan ground pork and Sichuan chili crisp sauce served with fluffy white rice.

Don’t forget dessert! Vegetarians can enjoy just about everything on the menu including the Kaffir Lime Rice Pudding with mango and toasted sesame seeds over sesame ice cream. Also available is the Banana Napoleon with miso butterscotch bananas, 5 spice wontons, and vanilla ice cream. And last but not least, Passion Fruit Mooncake. This special treat includes creamy passionfruit cheesecake, dragon crust, mango, and tangy passionfruit!

Vegan and Vegetarian Food in Epic Universe’s SUPER NINTENDO WORLD

“Here we go” over to SUPER NINTENDO WORLD! SUPER NINTENDO WORLD is probably the most immersive and interactive world in all of Epic Universe, but how do the snacks add up? Good news! The attention to detail Nintendo affords to the park also holds true for the food offered throughout SUPER NINTENDO WORLD. The vegan and vegetarian food here is truly a game-changer!

Toadstool Cafe

First stop: Toadstool Cafe, where Chef Toad has you covered! This quick-service spot is packed with whimsical treats that are just as fun to look at as they are to eat.

Toadstool Cheesy Garlic Knots

Vegans can kick things off with the Super Mushroom Soup — a rich and creamy mushroom blend served with adorable Super Mushroom–shaped crackers. Vegetarians can get started with the Toadstool Cheesy Garlic Knots, a savory favorite that’s perfect for sharing (or not — we won’t judge!).

Piranha Plant Caprese

Next up, for our vegetarian players is the Piranha Plant Caprese salad. This salad, featuring tomatoes, fresh mozzarella, asparagus, and fresh basil pesto with mixed greens and apple vinaigrette, is sure to be a refreshing treat before you go play all the fun games throughout SUPER NINTENDO WORLD.

Power-Up Spaghetti Marinara
Power-Up Spaghetti Marinara from Universal Epic Universe’s Toadstool Cafe

One of the standout entrées comes from the kids’ menu — the Power-Up Spaghetti Marinara — and trust us, adults will want in on this one too! Far from your average bowl of spaghetti, this fun and flavorful dish is topped with Power-Up parmesan crisps, served with a Toadstool cheesy garlic knot, and finished off with a delightful coin cookie. It’s a crowd-pleaser for all ages!

? Block Tiramisu
? Block Tiramisu from Universal Epic Universe’s Toadstool Cafe

For dessert, we have the ? Block Tiramisu. This adorable dessert comes in a ? Block, just like the ones you’ll spot throughout the realm. Inside, you’ll find coffee-soaked ladyfingers topped with a dusting of cocoa powder and finished with a chocolate Power-Up mushroom. Wahoo!

Mt. Beanpole Cake
Mt. Beanpole Cake from Universal Epic Universe’s Toadstool Cafe

There is also the Mt. Beanpole Cake, which is just as cute as the tiramisu. Vegetarians can enjoy this layered cake topped with matcha mousse, and a chocolate Super Star.

Princess Peach's Birthday Cake
Princess Peach’s Birthday Cake from Universal Epic Universe’s Toadstool Cafe

Lastly, the real highlight of the dessert selections is Princess Peach’s Birthday Cake. This festive sweet treat is a delicious yellow cake, topped with whipped topping, raspberries, mango, sprinkles, star chocolates, and a Princess Peach cookie! This dessert is easily big enough to share.

Yoshi’s Snack Island

Yoshi's Snack Island at Universal Epic Universe
Yoshi’s Smoothie from Universal Epic Universe’s Yoshi’s Snack Island

It wouldn’t be SUPER NINTENDO WORLD without Yoshi, who has his own snack stand called Yoshi’s Snack Island. This small but worth it quick-service eatery is not one to miss. Yoshi’s Smoothie is bound to energize our vegetarian friends! It has a Granny Smith apple flavor, a sweet honeydew syrup with milk, and is topped with whipped cream and bursting boba. Prefer something tropical? There’s a mango version too!

Green Shell Calzone from Universal Epic Universe's Yoshi's Snack Island

For our plant-based friends, we have the Green Shell Calzone! This hearty calzone is stuffed with vegan Italian sausage, marinara sauce, and vegan mozzarella cheese.

The Bubbly Barrel

The Bubbly Barrel at Universal Epic Universe
DK Crush Float from Universal Epic Universe’s The Bubbly Barrel

One more treat for our vegetarian friends is over at The Bubbly Barrel, which, as you might guess, is located in the Donkey Kong Country Area of SUPER NINTENDO WORLD. The DK Crush Float packs as big of a punch as Donkey Kong himself! This banana pineapple soft serve float with pineapple soda also includes a waffle bowl, toffee pieces, and caramel popcorn. Want to level up? You can also order the DK Crush Float in a collectible souvenir barrel mug!

Vegan and Vegetarian Food in Epic Universe’s Dark Universe

Quite the change from the bright and cheery SUPER NINTENDO WORLD, we have the home of the monsters that started it all, Dark Universe. As you step through the portal and enter the village of Darkmoor, the eerie ambiance is something to behold both day and night. The spine-tingling creativity you see throughout Darkmoor is also reflected in the unique and sometimes macabre dishes. Best of all, vegan and vegetarian travelers get to join in fun as well.

De Lacey’s Cottage

Warm Hearted Cinnamon Bites
Warm Hearted Cinnamon Bites from Universal Epic Universe’s De Lacey’s Cottage

Let’s start with the snack options — beginning at De Lacey’s Cottage, the spot where, in Universal Monsters lore, Frankenstein’s monster experiences his first glimpse of kindness and comfort.

At this quick-service stand, you can experience the same with the Warm Hearted Cinnamon Bites, which are cinnamon and sugar donut pieces served with cream cheese icing and streusel! Our vegetarian friends can also enjoy the Frank & Friends Pretzel served with white cheese.

Burning Blade Tavern

Hunter's Garlic Stake at Epic Universe's Burning Blade Tavern

For something a little more filling, try the handheld options at The Burning Blade Tavern, one of the many iconic structures in Darkmoor. Vegetarian options include the Hunter’s Garlic Stake, a crispy garlic butter pretzel with garlic dipping sauce. Certain to keep Dracula away!

Burning Cheddar Bites from Universal Epic Universe's Burning Blade Tavern

Another great snack is the Burning Cheddar Bites, fried cheese poppers with a side of sriracha ranch.

Das Stakehaus

Last but not least is my favorite spot in Darkmoor: Das Stakehaus. From the name and design to the menu itself, this place is a must-visit for fans of the original Universal Monsters. While nothing can truly replace the former Universal Studios’ Classic Monsters Café from Universal Studios Florida, Das Stakehaus mostly makes up for its absence… mostly.

Our Favorite Vegan Familiar’s Stuffed Cabbage from Universal Epic Universe's Das Stakehaus

At Das Stakehaus, vegan diners can sink their teeth into Our Favorite Vegan Familiar’s Stuffed Cabbage—cabbage filled with Impossible meat, and served with beet bucatini in a bell pepper tomato sauce.

Red Velvet Death from Universal Epic Universe's Das Stakehaus

There is also a selection of vegan and vegetarian sides, including fries, grapes, and slaw, but let’s talk about dessert. Don’t miss the Red Velvet Death, a red velvet heart “beet” coffin cake topped with chocolate crumbs and puffed rice “maggots.” It’s the perfect treat for visiting monsters!

After you eat, be sure to walk around the restaurant to take in all the grim and creepy art and artifacts. Das Stakehaus is a feast for the eyes as well as the palate! Take a bite!

Vegan and Vegetarian Food in The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Ministry of Magic at Epic Universe

For our next journey, grab some floo powder, and before you know it, we find ourselves in 1920s Paris! Known worldwide for its culinary excellence, this iconic city has been beautifully brought to life in The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Ministry of Magic, capturing all the elegance, charm, and flavor in true magical style.

Café L’air De La Sirène

First stop is the Café L’air De La Sirène. Fans of the Fantastic Beasts franchise will appreciate seeing some familiar creatures woven into the tile designs inside the cafe.

Cassoulet Végétalien aux Haricots Blancs
Cassoulet Végétalien aux Haricots Blancs from Universal Epic Universe’s Café L’air De La Sirène

For a rich and delicious meal, vegan visitors have two delectable options. First, the Cassoulet Végétalien aux Haricots Blancs. A hearty stew with cannellini beans, vegan sausage, vegan bacon, trumpet mushrooms, carrots, and tomatoes, topped with baguette croutons. And if you want something a little more delicate, but just as delicious, check out the Baguette Ratatouille Provençale, featuring roasted tomatoes, zucchini, squash, and eggplant, topped with pickled red onions and arugula, drizzled with basil pistou, served in a warm, crusty baguette. Bon appétit!

Vegetarian guests also have some appetizing dishes to choose from, starting with the Oeufs en Cocotte, poached eggs, mornay sauce, gruyere cheese mashed potatoes, toasted baguette, and a side of seasonal berries with lavender honey. It doesn’t get more Parisian than that… unless we’re talking about crêpes!

Crêpe Citronnée aux Chambord
Crêpe Citronnée aux Chambord from Universal Epic Universe’s Café L’air De La Sirène
Butterbeer Crepe
Butterbeer Crepe from Universal Epic Universe’s Café L’air De La Sirène

The crêpes stand at Universal Studios Florida is incredibly popular for good reason, but these crêpes take things to a whole new level! You have two to choose from: the Crêpe Citronnée aux Chambord, with lemon cream cheese, Chambord sauce, and fresh berries, and the Bieraubeurre Crêpe featuring shortbread cookie, butter Bavarian cream, Bieraubeurre cream, strawberries, Bieraubeurre drizzle, and shortbread cookie garnish. That’s right friends, we now have a Butterbeer crepe! If you are a fan of the other Butterbeer offerings in the various Wizarding World locations, this is a MUST try!

Galette de Tomates et Fromage
Galette de Tomates et Fromage from Universal Epic Universe’s Café L’air De La Sirène

If you’re craving a sweet bakery treat, vegetarian guests have plenty to choose from — including the croissant, almondine, cinnamon brioche, and pain au chocolat. Prefer something savory? Try the Galette de Tomates et Fromage, a butter pastry filled with roasted tomato, soubise, and goat cheese.

Crème Brûlée
Crème Brûlée from Universal Epic Universe’s Café L’air De La Sirène

And last but certainly not least, one of my personal favorites, a classic Crème Brûlée. This indulgent dessert features smooth vanilla custard, a crisp layer of caramelized sugar, and a topping of fresh berries.

Le Gobelet Noir

Next up in our culinary adventure is Le Gobelet Noir. This quick-service establishment belongs to a character you’ve heard tell of, Nicolas Flamel, the creator of the Sorcerer’s Stone! This is another fun restaurant to look around and spy various Easter Eggs from the Wizarding World. But let’s get to their vegan and vegetarian offerings.

Ancient Forest Salad

Lentil Stew

Vegans can try out the Ancient Forest Salad, featuring a medley of greens and vegetables topped with an herb vinaigrette. For something more hearty, the Lentil Stew is sure to please! This rich dish contains lentils, vegan bacon, and root vegetables alongside artisan bread! Perfect for a chilly fall or winter day.

Baklava
Baklava from Universal Epic Universe’s Le Gobelet Noir

Accio dessert! At Le Gobelet Noir, plant-based guests can indulge in baklava made with pistachios, walnuts, vegan anglaise, and coconut nectar.

And just like in the other Wizarding World locations, there’s a trusty Butterbeer cart nearby. Good news for our plant-based pals: a vegan, non-dairy version is available, so everyone can enjoy a taste of the magic!

Vegan and Vegetarian Food in Epic Universe’s How to Train Your Dragon – Isle of Berk

Last but not least, we leave the Wizarding World and head to another world full of magical creatures—dragons! How to Train Your Dragon – Isle of Berk is home to some of the most beloved characters in Epic Universe, including Hiccup, Astrid, and everybody’s favorite dragon, Toothless. And as we know from the movies, they know how to eat! Fortunately, they haven’t forgotten their vegan and vegetarian guests — everyone’s invited to the table!

Mead Hall

Mead Hall is a quick-service restaurant, and another fun place to explore as you dine. You might not think this Viking establishment would have much in the way for vegans and vegetarians, and you would be wrong!

Nordic Harvest Salad
Nordic Harvest Salad from Universal Epic Universe’s Mead Hall

The Nordic Harvest Salad featuring a generous mix of greens and hearty grains, blueberries, radishes, apples, and trail mix, topped with a raspberry walnut vinaigrette, is sure to satisfy ANY appetite!

If you’re looking for a hefty handheld, though, you can’t go wrong with Valka’s Vegan Burger. This patty is made from ancient grains, with mushrooms, leeks, smoked berry aioli, and arugula sandwiched in a pumpernickel Kaiser bun and served with Nordic fries.

Stormfly's Catch of the Day
Stormfly’s Catch of the Day from Universal Epic Universe’s Mead Hall

For dessert, you might not think fish would have a place on the menu, but for our vegetarian friends, you can check out Stormfly’s Catch of the Day! This cereal crumble and chocolate mousse fish is just as fun to look at as it is to eat.

Spit Fyre Grill

Valka's Vegan Bowl
Valka’s Vegan Bowl from Universal Epic Universe’s Spit Fyre Grill

Spit Fyre Grill has another vegan offering that is sure to please. Valka’s Vegan Bowl is filled with kale spring mix, bean salad, pineapple salsa, candy beets, vegan feta, and mango and mint vinaigrette. It’s a nice, refreshing treat to have while you sit in the seating area overlooking the Fyre Drill boat ride!

Hooligan’s Grog & Gruel

Goldfish Mac and Cheese Cone
Goldfish Mac and Cheese Cone from Universal Epic Universe’s Hooligan’s Grog & Gruel

Last but not least, we need to talk about Hooligan’s Grog & Gruel. This quick-service stand is THE place to check out in Isle of Berk. Known for its wildly popular handheld cones, this spot is home to one of the park’s favorite snacks. The Goldfish Mac and Cheese is the vegetarian-friendly option, and it’s a total crowd-pleaser! Savory mac and cheese with Goldfish served in a crispy bread cone. Do not sleep on this one-of-a-kind creation!

Whew, what a ride! From savory snacks to full-on feasts, Universal Epic Universe truly goes above and beyond in serving up delicious food for vegan and vegetarian visitors. Whether you’re plant-based by choice or just curious to explore, there’s a world of flavor waiting for you.

Welcome, travellers! The long-awaited portals at Universal Epic Universe have opened, and guests from all over the world have the opportunity to experience Universal Orlando Resort’s fourth theme park. But with so much to see and do, it’s easy to overlook key details that can make or break your day. That’s why we’ve put together our top Epic Universe tips, along with the most common mistakes to avoid, to help you make the most of your visit.

From easy-to-miss details to frequent first-timer slip-ups, this blog highlights the biggest Epic Universe mistakes to avoid so you can enjoy a smooth, unforgettable day in the park.

Universal Epic Universe Transportation Tips: Don’t Get Caught Without a Plan

The Chronos at the front of Celestial Park
The Chronos at Epic Universe

It may come as a surprise that Epic Universe is on an entirely separate property from Universal Islands of Adventure and Universal Studios Florida. Thankfully, Epic Universe has its own complimentary transportation going from Universal Orlando Resort Hotels and select Universal Partner Hotels. While Universal hotels like Cabana Bay Beach Resort and Loews’ Royal Pacific Resort have frequent shuttles going across Universal Orlando Resort’s properties, their Partner Hotel transportation may only run at set times and could require reservations, so don’t get left behind—check the schedule in advance.

If you’re staying at Stella Nova or Terra Luna, great news: Epic Universe is just across the street! Walking to the park takes about 10–15 minutes, so it’s perfect for those who prefer to skip the shuttle and stretch their legs.

Rideshare apps like Uber and Lyft are always an option, though they’ll cost more than hotel-provided transportation. That said, thinking ahead about your hotel’s location and available transit options can save you major headaches later. A little planning = a lot more park time.

Epic Universe Entrance in Universal Helios Grand Hotel

Guests of Helios Grand Hotel hit the jackpot when it comes to getting to the park. These accommodations come with a dedicated entrance to Epic Universe, placing you right between Dark Universe and The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Ministry of Magic. Talk about an epic backyard!

Avoid This Common Universal Epic Universe Mistake: Wear the Right Gear

There is truly depth to each of the worlds within Epic Universe — literally. One of the biggest aspects that sneaks up on travellers is the surprising number of stairs they’ll encounter during their visit. Here, wearing comfortable, supportive shoes and any knee or ankle braces will be a lifesaver when climbing up and down those staircases.

Rest assured, elevators are available throughout various attractions and worlds for guests who need them. Please speak with a Team Member for assistance.

Universal Epic Universe Tips for Entertainment: Don’t Miss the Must-See Shows

The Untrainable Dragon at Epic Universe's How to Train Your Dragon – Isle of Berk
The Untrainable Dragon at Epic Universe’s How to Train Your Dragon – Isle of Berk

Currently, Epic Universe has two live entertainment shows within its worlds: The Untrainable Dragon in How to Train Your Dragon – Isle of Berk, and Le Cirque Arcanus in The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Ministry of Magic. These shows deliver jaw-dropping effects, immersive storytelling, and heartwarming moments, making them absolutely worth carving out time for. That said, timing is everything. Showtimes can overlap, and if you’re not paying attention, it’s easy to miss one (or both) in the whirlwind of it all.

We’ve found that one of the best ways to assist in maximizing your day at Epic is via the Universal Orlando Resort app. Much like their other parks, the app displays the full entertainment schedule for the day, and you can even set reminders for the performances you don’t want to miss. This will help immensely in managing your visit just right while creating memories at Epic Universe.

Also on that note….

Reserve, Remind, and Maximize Your Day

We at Orlando Informer are big proponents of being able to move about at your leisure on vacation. That said, planning ahead for certain experiences can go a long way in making the rest of your visit stress-free and seamless. This is where the Universal Orlando Resort app comes in!

Harry Potter and the Battle at the Ministry at The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Ministry of Magic
Harry Potter and the Battle at the Ministry at The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Ministry of Magic

Besides showtime alerts for the must-see live entertainment, the app is where guests will make virtual queue reservations for Harry Potter and the Battle at the Ministry (if it’s in use during your visit). Additionally, mobile ordering plays a key role in Epic Universe’s dining experience—guests will place their orders for quick-service spots like Mead Hall in Isle of Berk and Das Stakehaus in Dark Universe directly through their devices. And while you can visit the host stand at Atlantic or The Blue Dragon Pan-Asian Restaurant, table-service reservations can also be made digitally for added convenience.

Finally, make the most of your Epic Universe visit (and your budget) by purchasing discounted theme park tickets through Orlando Informer here!

Tonight, that vision became reality. We had the immense honor of joining Universal Orlando Resort for the Grand Opening Celebration of their newest theme park, Universal Epic Universe, on the eve of its official opening day on May 22.

The voice of Chairman and CEO of Universal Destinations & Experiences, Mark Woodbury, welcomed the crowd, followed by a powerful voiceover from none other than Steven Spielberg. The show unfolded as a symphony of sound and light to celebrate each new portal, beginning with the Super Mario Bros. theme, seamlessly transitioning into the soaring notes of the Harry Potter score as fireworks erupted above. The atmosphere shifted with the haunting notes of Dark Universe, casting a mysterious tone that made you wonder what creatures might be stirring in the shadows. Then came the emotional swell of How to Train Your Dragon – Isle of Berk, accompanied by the fan-favorite track “Test Drive.”

Then, the grand finale: drones rose into the night, swirling into formation. As the final sparks faded and the smoke cleared, these drones formed a glowing portal above a single, powerful word: “Epic.”

It’s hard not to feel a lump in your throat watching it all unfold—this culmination of years of anticipation. For theme park fans, it’s a moment of awe and emotion, watching history happen in real time. Parks like this aren’t built every year, or even every decade. On May 22nd, 2025, the gateway to Epic Universe officially opened to the world. Universal Orlando Resort’s latest property is, well, a universe of its own. This new theme park consists of five captivating worlds, each with groundbreaking, innovative attractions that guests can visit.

Among these realms, visitors can be transported to the Mushroom Kingdom in SUPER NINTENDO WORLD, where they can meet Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach, and Donkey Kong. They’ll also be able to come face to face with their favorite Vikings and flying creatures from the How to Train Your Dragon franchise, like Hiccup and Toothless, inside How to Train Your Dragon – Isle of Berk. Epic Universe even has its own Wizarding World of Harry Potter, where the park’s travelers will be whisked away to 1920s Paris from the Fantastic Beasts films and step inside the Ministry itself at The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – The Ministry of Magic.

Upon approaching Epic Universe, guests are first greeted by a gateway connected to a massive, emerald tower containing icons representing each of the worlds they can visit during their day. As this tower welcomes everyone to Celestial Park, the world between worlds, and what will surely be an unforgettable adventure, one can’t help but wonder what exactly is this machine of cosmic majestry?

That, dear readers, is the Chronos.

Who created the Chronos?

Epic Universe's Chronos at Night
Epic Universe’s Chronos at Night

As we know, Celestial Park is the central hub of Epic Universe. According to lore, one of the curious visitors to this realm was Vincent Various, a legendary explorer who came upon Celestial Park. When he first arrived, he learned about the Celestians and that they used comets as their transportation between worlds. However, the problem with comets is how unpredictable they can be. So, Vincent crafted a solution — portals.

Of course, portal transportation would be convenient and instantaneous, as all one needs to do is take a single step, and they’re immersed in an entirely different place. However, maintaining these portals would require a large amount of energy. It was then that Various realized that the only way to power these portals would be to harness the energies within the Chronos tower. From there, the Celestians, residents of Celestial Park, would assist in maintaining the power of the Chronos.

The connection between the Chronos tower and Epic Universe

Epic Universe's Chronos at Night
Epic Universe’s Chronos at Night

The visual and symbolic anchor of Epic Universe powers not only these various portals but also Celestial Park itself. Each of the establishments of the world within worlds is fueled by the energies Vincent harnessed. This includes not just shops like Vincent Various’s own Sensorium Emporium, but also Celestial Park’s amazing restaurants like The Atlantic and the out-of-this-world fare of Pizza Moon; as well as the park’s own attractions like Constellation Carousel.

While the true origins of the Chronos tower itself are unclear, one can’t help but wonder if there’s more to Vincent Various’s story and his connection to the Chronos. Could he be the very creator of this awe-inspiring structure? Would this mean that he’s more than just a mere explorer?

With Epic Universe only in its infant years, surely more will be revealed about Various, the Celestians, and the Chronos.

The countdown has begun! Epic Universe is almost here, and it’s set to change everything you know about theme parks. As Universal Orlando Resort’s most ambitious offering yet, this all-new park will feature five immersive worlds, groundbreaking attractions, and an entirely different layout from what longtime fans might expect. If you’re preparing for your first visit to Epic Universe, there’s a lot to take in—and even more to get excited about!

From navigating the unique park design to maximizing your time in each area, our tips will help you feel confident and ready to explore from the moment you step inside.

Understand the Epic Universe Layout

Universal Epic Universe Concept Art Map
Universal Epic Universe Concept Art Map

Epic Universe doesn’t follow the typical park layout you might be used to. Instead of a loop (like Islands of Adventure) or a main-street-style boulevard (like Universal Studios Florida), this park is built around a central hub—Celestial Park—with the other four immersive areas branching out from it.

Each section is accessed through a large, story-driven portal designed to fully transport you into the world beyond. That means you won’t always see what’s ahead until you walk through the entrance. That said, reviewing the park map in advance can be helpful—especially if you want to make the most of your time.

Universal has also opened an Epic Universe Preview Center at CityWalk, where you can explore a scale model of the park and get a feel for the layout ahead of your visit. It’s a good way to start getting excited about what’s coming and pick up some themed merchandise while at it.

What to Wear and Pack for Your First Visit to Epic Universe

Florida weather doesn’t always cooperate with your plans. A sunny morning can turn into a thunderstorm by the afternoon, and the heat and humidity are year-round guests. Wearing breathable clothing and comfortable shoes is key.

Belt bags or crossbody slings are handy for carrying essentials like sunscreen, a water bottle, and a phone charge without the hassle of lockers. Plus, packing a poncho isn’t a bad idea if you plan to spend the entire day at the park.

Some visitors enjoy coordinating their outfits to match their favorite fandoms. SUPER NINTENDO WORLD is perfect for bold reds and greens, while a gothic-inspired look is ideal for representing Dark Universe.

Explore Menus Before Your First Visit

The Bubbly Barrel at Universal Epic Universe
DK Crush Float from The Bubbly Barrel

One of the most exciting aspects of Epic Universe is the focus on themed dining. Universal has put a lot of thought into the food across the park, creating restaurants and menus that fit the tone of each land.

SUPER NINTENDO WORLD features Toadstool Cafe, a colorful eatery with playful options like a Super Mushroom Pizza Bowl and Princess Peach’s Birthday Cake. Over in How to Train Your Dragon – Isle of Berk, dine like a Viking at Mead Hall, serving up hearty fare.

Browsing our Epic Universe guides (complete with menus) is a great way to plan your meals ahead of time. Not only will you get a taste of what each spot has to offer, but you’ll also get a better sense of pricing before you arrive.

Find the Best Photo Spots

With five richly detailed realms, Epic Universe is already being called one of the most visually stunning theme parks ever built. There are going to be plenty of opportunities for great photos, from sweeping skyline shots of Celestial Park to character meet-and-greets in How to Train Your Dragon – Isle of Berk. Each section will have its distinct aesthetic, so even if you’re not into posing for photos, you’ll likely find yourself pulling out your phone to capture the atmosphere.

Watch Social Media Highlights Before Your First Visit

While Epic Universe hasn’t officially opened to the public just yet, Orlando Informer had the exciting opportunity to preview its offerings a few weeks ago! Curious about what’s in store? A quick scroll through our YouTube channel, Instagram, or TikTok will give you an early look at the rides, food, merchandise, and so much more. It’s not just a fun watch; it can help you determine what’s most important to you during your visit.

With so much to discover, a little planning can make all the difference in getting the most out of your first visit to Epic Universe. From jaw-dropping attractions to immersive areas, this is a theme park experience like no other.

Today was the big day! Orlando Informer had the incredible opportunity to step inside Universal Epic Universe, the highly anticipated new theme park at Universal Orlando Resort. Although the park officially opens to the public on May 22, 2025, we were granted exclusive early access and are here to give you a first look at what makes this park a true game-changer. From groundbreaking attractions to immersive realms, here are our top takeaways from our day exploring Universal Epic Universe.

Celestial Park at Universal Epic Universe

The Chronos at the front of Celestial Park
The Chronos at the front of Celestial Park

As the breathtaking entry point and heart of Universal Epic Universe, Celestial Park sets the stage for everything this next-generation theme park has to offer. This stunning area blends innovative design with immersive storytelling, drawing guests in from the moment they step through the gates.

Greeting visitors at the front of the park is The Chronos, the towering icon of Universal Epic Universe. This majestic, moving structure serves as both a visual anchor and a symbolic gateway, inviting guests to explore the awe-inspiring realms beyond. It’s an unforgettable welcome that sets the tone for the adventure ahead.

Celestial Park at Universal Epic Universe

Designed with a wheel-and-spoke layout, Celestial Park serves as the central hub, connecting visitors to the park’s various immersive worlds through portals. According to the lore, it was Vincent Various who crafted these portals. The Celestials, inhabitants of this Celestial Park, once traveled via comets (like the ones you’ll race aboard in Stardust Racers, more on that below). But comets, as thrilling as they were, proved unpredictable. So, Various stepped in to create something more reliable: the portals.

But don’t be too quick to rush through! This area offers far more than just a pass-through experience.

One of the biggest showstoppers here is Stardust Racers, a high-speed, dual-launch coaster that dominates the skyline with sleek tracks and spectacular inversions. It’s a must-ride for adrenaline seekers and one of the most thrilling attractions in the entire park.

Prefer something a little more laid-back? Constellation Carousel offers a dreamy, celestial take on the classic merry-go-round.

Celestial Park Highlights

  • Stardust Racers: It’s a beautiful, gravity-defying experience with unique elements you won’t find on any other coaster in the park.
  • Fountain Features: Playful, dancing fountains are scattered throughout, adding energy to this cosmic area.
  • Helios Grand Hotel: This luxurious resort serves as a striking visual anchor, seamlessly completing the skyline and enhancing the immersive, cohesive atmosphere of Celestial Park.
  • Pizza Moon: A fan favorite! This Victorian theater-inspired pizzeria features animated set pieces and a lively atmosphere that’s just as memorable as the pizza itself. If you’re dining in Celestial Park. It’s a must-try!

SUPER NINTENDO WORLD at Universal Epic Universe

Donkey Kong Country in SUPER NINTENDO WORLD

Calling all gamers! SUPER NINTENDO WORLD has officially landed at Universal Epic Universe, and it’s everything we dreamed of and more. After making its debut in Universal Studios Japan and Universal Studios Hollywood, this vibrant, game-inspired realm now has a home right here at Universal Orlando Resort, complete with a warp pipe entrance that instantly immerses you in the pixel-perfect worlds of Mario, Donkey Kong, and beyond.

Take on Mario Kart: Bowser’s Challenge, an interactive dark ride where AR headsets and real-world racing combine. Race through familiar tracks, dodge Koopa shells, and aim for victory alongside Mario and friends. Or team up with Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong on Mine-Cart Madness, a thrilling coaster that brings the game mechanics to life.

For a more relaxing experience, hop aboard Yoshi’s Adventure for a leisurely journey through the Mushroom Kingdom. We had a blast spotting colorful eggs, pressing interactive buttons along the way, and soaking in the unique views of SUPER NINTENDO WORLD.

  • Nods to Other Nintendo Franchises: While Mario and Donkey Kong take center stage, be on the lookout for hidden nods to other Nintendo franchises. Spot the Pikmin tucked away in the scenery, and don’t miss the Nintendo Super Star Store in Celestial Park, where stained-glass windows feature Link and Zelda from The Legend of Zelda series.
  • Mine-Cart Madness: Though we’ve experienced Mario Kart: Bowser’s Challenge in Hollywood, this was our first time riding Mine-Cart Madness. This coaster simulates wild stunts like leaping from one track to another, blurring the line between game and reality.

Dark Universe at Universal Epic Universe

Portal to Dark Universe
Portal to Dark Universe

At Orlando Informer, we take our horror seriously—especially as devoted fans of Halloween Horror Nights. So it’s no surprise that Dark Universe was one of our most anticipated areas of Universal Epic Universe. The best part? It completely lived up to the hype. This world is a love letter to the legacy of Universal Monsters that introduces a fresh, modern twist that’s more fun than frightening, making it accessible and thrilling for guests of all ages.

The Burning Blade Tavern at Universal Epic Universe
The Burning Blade Tavern at Universal Epic Universe

One of the crown jewels of Universal Epic Universe, Monsters Unchained: The Frankenstein Experiment, is easily one of our favorite attractions in the entire park. This dark ride follows Dr. Victoria Frankenstein, a brilliant descendant of the infamous scientist, as she attempts to control and experiment on some of the most iconic monsters in history. The result? A heart-pounding monster mash where Dracula, The Mummy, and more collide in a narrative that feels like the Avengers: Endgame of the monster-verse.

For slightly lighter, family-friendly fun, Curse of the Werewolf offers a spinning coaster experience inspired by The Wolf Man’s origin story. It’s the perfect introduction to thrills for younger guests, all while keeping the eerie tone that makes Dark Universe so unique.

Dark Universe Highlights

Meet Ygor inside Dark Universe
Meet Ygor inside Dark Universe
  • Power Surges & Story Integration: One of the most compelling elements of Dark Universe is its immersive environmental storytelling. Throughout the village, guests may notice sudden power surges—lights flickering, energy spikes, and strange sounds. These moments are tied to the experiments happening inside Frankenstein Manor, which towers ominously above Dark Universe. Is it a breakthrough? Or something gone terribly wrong?
  • Roaming Characters: Unlike most modern theme parks, Dark Universe breaks the mold with roaming characters that bring the village to life. Keep your eyes peeled for Dr. Victoria Frankenstein’s assistant, Ygor, or monster hunters patrolling the streets of Darkmoor. These interactions add depth and realism, making Dark Universe feel like a living, breathing world.

The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Ministry of Magic at Universal Epic Universe

Universal Epic Universe continues to expand its offerings with the third and most ambitious chapter of The Wizarding World of Harry Potter, offering fans an all-new way to explore the magical world we know and love. Blending elements from the Harry Potter and Fantastic Beasts films, this immersive area uses a Time-Turner portal to transport guests back to 1920s Paris, echoing the atmosphere of Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald.

Much like Diagon Alley over at Universal Studios Florida, Ministry of Magic is tucked away from the modern world. Once you enter the portal, you’re greeted by a sprawling, Parisian cityscape that feels entirely removed from Central Florida. Every inch is meticulously detailed, making this realm one of the most immersive experiences in Universal Epic Universe.

Harry Potter and the Battle at the Ministry at The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Ministry of Magic
Harry Potter and the Battle at the Ministry at The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Ministry of Magic

The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Ministry of Magic features two major offerings that expand the Wizarding World like never before. Harry Potter and the Battle at the Ministry is a groundbreaking attraction that takes you deep into the heart of the British Ministry of Magic. Centered around the long-anticipated trial of Dolores Umbridge, this ride invites both longtime readers and film fans to explore the halls of this magical government institution for the very first time.

Enter the big top of Le Cirque Arcanus, first introduced in Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald. Here, magic leaps from the stage with breathtaking live performances, aerialists, stunning puppetry, and fantastic beasts that spring to life through a seamless fusion of stagecraft and special effects.

The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Ministry of Magic Highlights

  • Portal Entry: Keen-eyed fans will spot a lineup of wands mounted around the portal, including those of Harry, Hermione, Queenie, Newt, and Grindelwald. Look up, and you’ll find the Elder Wand, which was wielded by both Dumbledore and Grindelwald at a point in time—a nod to the shared history between these powerful wizards.
  • Immersive Environment: Whether you’re a die-hard Potterhead or a casual fan, this world is an absolute showstopper. From its massive Parisian facades and intricately themed shops to the ambient magic woven through every corner, The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Ministry of Magic delivers an unforgettable experience that feels far beyond the Muggle world. Fun fact: this area features the tallest buildings ever constructed for any Wizarding World location to date!
  • Harry Potter and the Battle at the Ministry: This queue is easily one of our new favorites—it’s an unforgettable walkthrough of the Ministry of Magic, revealing areas we’ve never explored before. The grand atrium is a visual spectacle, complete with a restored Fountain of Magical Brethren and an enchanting weather-filled ceiling. Along the way, you’ll pass through the Ministry’s reception area, the Auror locker room, the Hall of Ministers, and even Dolores Umbridge’s iconic pink-and-gold office. It’s a richly detailed experience on a truly epic scale. And just when you think it can’t get better, it does—because this all leads up to what we believe is one of the greatest theme park rides in the world. Imagine The Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man mashed up with The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror, all while seamlessly blending screen-based wizardry with immersive practical sets. It’s an edge-of-your-seat experience that’ll have you breathless, even while you’re sitting down.
  • Le Cirque Arcanus: An absolute standout, this spellbinding live show blends modern technology with theatrical artistry to conjure dazzling illusions, mythical creatures, and breathtaking magical moments on stage.
  • Specialty Beverages: Yes, Butterbeer is here (of course!), but this portal also debuts brand-new wizarding drinks. Try the refreshing Thé Fraise, a strawberry-mint iced tea, or dare to sip Le Breuvage Sombre du Gobelet Noir, a deep, fruit-forward brew topped with yogurt-popping pearls.

From the moment you pass through the portal, you’re transported to the cliffs of Berk. Just beyond the entry point, a beautifully engraved stone sets the scene with a heartfelt tale of unity and bravery.

It’s a magical performance that captures the spirit of the How to Train Your Dragon series in a whole new way.

How to Train Your Dragon – Isle of Berk Highlights

  • Epic Reveal Moment: Like the Ministry of Magic, Isle of Berk begins with a jaw-dropping reveal that instantly immerses you in its fantastical setting. It’s not just a theme park world—it feels like you’ve traveled to a Viking realm.
  • Dragons at Every Turn: From tucked-away sculptures to lifelike animatronics, dragons are everywhere in Isle of Berk. Whether flying overhead, interacting with guests, or featured in ride details, the presence of dragons gives the entire area a sense of movement and life—making it one of the most dynamic zones in Universal Epic Universe.

One of the biggest takeaways from our first visit to Universal Epic Universe is just how faithfully the park brings its concept art to life. Every detail, from the sweeping skylines to the immersive worlds beyond the portals, feels like it was pulled straight from the renderings we’ve studied for months. It’s truly a visual masterpiece and an absolute must-visit for any theme park enthusiast.

In keeping with the immersive design of Epic Universe, all realms, including the new Harry Potter area, are separated by berms with “portal” entrances. These portals act as magical gateways, transitioning guests from the central hub of Celestial Park – a world between worlds – to the distinct realms of each area. After crossing into The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Ministry of Magic, guests will be transported to two historical points within the Harry Potter film franchise: The magical side of 1920s Paris from the Fantastic Beasts films and the 1990s British Ministry of Magic from the Harry Potter series.

We’ll start with  Place Cachée since it’s the easiest to cover as much of the newest Wizarding World takes place here. Place Cachée is a pocket realm similar to The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Diagon Alley where many wizarding shops and cafes can be found.

Now, this 1920s bustling, French shopping district is specific to the film Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald. Although this movie is the second installment of the Fantastic Beasts franchise, don’t worry — knowing the first or third movies won’t be important to enjoying this portion of Epic’s Wizarding World (although you’re welcome to watch them anyway).

That said, watching Crimes of Grindelwald before your visit can add an extra layer of excitement, as you’ll spot familiar details and locations, like Le Cirque Arcanus and recognizable storefronts, straight from the screen.

Dolores Umbridge on Trial at Epic Universe’s The Wizarding World of Harry Potter

Harry Potter and the Battle at the Ministry at The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Ministry of Magic
Harry Potter and the Battle at the Ministry at The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Ministry of Magic

Grab your time turners! Upon entering Harry Potter and the Battle at the Ministry, guests are transported forward in time to the 1990s Ministry of Magic. Here, Ministry of Magic visitors will witness the trial of Dolores Umbridge, the former High Inquisitor of Hogwarts and a secondary antagonist within the series. On that note, to understand why Umbridge is standing trial, there are two key reference points to consider:

Start with Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. The fifth installation in the Harry Potter film franchise is Umbridge’s first appearance and it wastes no time in showing us her cruel nature. This film is also where we learn that, while she’s no Death Eater, it quickly becomes clear that her ideology isn’t far off from Voldemort’s.

Since the attraction’s story takes place after the events of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 and Part 2, fans will want to watch those two films next. While Deathly Hallows Part 2 is where we’re told Umbridge will stand trial, it’s specifically Deathly Hallows Part 1 that provides further detail about how wicked Umbridge truly is as she extends her cruelty and prejudice to Muggle-born wizards and witches following Voldemort’s takeover of the Ministry of Magic.

Now that we’re up to date, we can cross the Métro-Floo and enter the British Ministry of Magic for the long-anticipated trial of Dolores Umbridge. Surely nothing could go wrong… right?

Why stop there? When you think of icons that represent Universal Orlando Resort, one name stands out above the rest: the Universal Monsters. From Dracula and Frankenstein’s Monster to The Mummy, The Invisible Man, and The Phantom of the Opera, these legendary creatures have captivated audiences for over a century.

The legacy of the Universal Monsters began in 1923 with The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Universal’s first major monster movie, adapted from Victor Hugo’s 1831 novel. From that moment on, the Universal Monsters carved out a permanent place in cinematic history, evolving from literary legends to silver-screen superstars. And now, they’re stepping back into the spotlight in a big way with the highly anticipated Dark Universe—coming to Universal Orlando Resort’s brand-new theme park, Epic Universe, when it opens in May 2025.

We’ll dive into the cinematic origins, theme park evolution, and thrilling future of the Universal Monsters—and discover how they’ve earned their very own world within Epic Universe.

The Early Years of the Universal Monsters

Dracula on Monsters Unchained: The Frankenstein Experiment
Dracula in Universal Epic Universe

The Hunchback of Notre Dame, plus many of his cohorts such as Dracula (written by Bram Stoker) and Frankenstein’s Monster (created by Mary Shelley), first emerged from the pages of classic literature before being immortalized in the beloved films we know and love from Universal.

However, others originated as films themselves. The beloved 1999 film The Mummy, starring Brendan Fraser, is loosely inspired by the 1932 classic of the same name, written by John L. Balderston.

Regardless of their origins, monsters have stayed in our minds and been part of the entertainment landscape for generations—and rightly so. Whether it’s the horror or the humanity, something about these monsters is, well…universal.

But how did these monster movies become, essentially, the very first cinematic universe? It all began with great storytelling—and, as always, a little bit of luck.

Motion pictures were invented in the late 1800s, and as the technology progressed beyond the Lumiere brothers’ Cinematographe and The Edison company’s Kinetoscope, pictures were ready for the big screen. But where to find a story? Books. That’s where novels like Dracula, Frankenstein, and The Phantom of the Opera came into play. These were very successful films in the 1930s and saw the rise of the first generation of Hollywood Horror stars, including Lon Chaney, Bela Lugosi, and Boris Karloff.

After those initial films, and other classics such as The Mummy, The Invisible Man, and The Bride of Frankenstein, there was a lack of horror films, so Universal re-released Dracula and Frankenstein and started coming up with new ideas such as Son of Frankenstein.

The Creation of the First Cinematic Universe

The Wolf Man in Universal Epic Universe

As great as the original monsters were and are, their stories had been told, so to carry on their legacy, it was time to branch out.

In the 1940s, Universal released The Wolf Man, which starred the son of a familiar face, Lon Chaney, Jr. The 1940s was also the era of the monster crossovers, which were wildly popular and helped to cement the Universal Monsters into Hollywood history. Movies like Frankenstein Meets The Wolf Man (1943), House of Frankenstein (1944), and Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein (1948) offered up the same beloved monsters but with new and original twists for the filmgoing public.

The Creature from the Black Lagoon at Universal Epic Universe
The Creature from the Black Lagoon in Universal Epic Universe

Without those crossovers, the original monsters might have faded into oblivion. Luckily for us, they endured, and the 1950s introduced The Creature from the Black Lagoon along with a new Mummy film.

But it was in the late 1950s that the Universal Monsters became transmedial. In 1957, Universal struck an epic 10-year television deal with Screen Gems. This deal allowed Universal to distribute 52 of their titles, which were included in Mel Jass’ Mel’s Matinee Movie between 1958 and 1979, keeping the monsters in the mix for American audiences.

It was during this era that a young Stephen Sommers, who would go on to direct 1999’s The Mummy, had his first introduction to the classic monster. His experience is a testament to the importance of keeping these legacy stories alive, allowing new generations of filmmakers to discover them and create their own unforgettable films.

Universal Monsters in Theme Parks

The 1960s also marked the Monsters’ debut in the theme park world. When Universal Studios Hollywood opened in 1964, it featured the Studio Backlot Tour, complete with appearances from Frankenstein’s Monster. Guests could also purchase a variety of themed merchandise, including models, toys, masks, and even postage stamps.

Fast-forward to the 1990s… thanks to a merger with Panasonic, Universal was able to release VHS versions of all their classic films, making them widely available for the general public to enjoy at home whenever they wanted—keeping the monsters alive for a new generation. The success of this endeavor ultimately paved the way for 1999’s The Mummy and spin-off films inspired by the original Monsters, such as Van Helsing, also directed by Stephen Sommers and starring Hugh Jackman.

Universal Orlando’s Horror Make-Up Show at Universal Studios Florida
Universal Orlando’s Horror Make-Up Show at Universal Studios Florida

June 7, 1990, was the opening day of Universal Studios Florida and with it, a show most of us know and love, Universal Orlando’s Horror Make-Up Show, previously known as The Phantom of the Opera Horror Make-Up Show, paying homage to the monster of the same name portrayed by Claude Rains in 1943. The current iteration of the show has a montage of various films, highlighting the work of Jack Pierce, the legendary designer behind many monsters, including Dracula, Frankenstein’s Monster, the Wolf Man, and the Bride of Frankenstein.

Universal Studios’ Classic Monsters Cafe at Universal Studios Florida
Universal Studios’ Classic Monsters Cafe at Universal Studios Florida

The monsters continued their march into the realm of theme parks with the opening of the Classic Monster’s Cafe (RIP) in 1998. During its time at Universal Studios Florida, the restaurant offered up quick-service BBQ meals, but the best part was the memorabilia, props, and the TV screens showing clips from the original films.

Revenge of the Mummy at Universal Studios Florida

Next up, the curse, it’s real! Revenge of the Mummy opened in 2004 with none other than Rick O’Connell himself (Brendan Frasier) there to mark the occasion. To this day, the ride remains a favorite among both locals and tourists, not to mention one of the most quotable. After all, Brendan probably would’ve enjoyed it a little more if he’d gotten his CUP OF COFFEE! [ghostly swoosh!]

Since its inception as Fright Nights in 1991, Universal Monsters have been woven into the very fabric of Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Studios Florida. Creatures like Frankenstein’s Monster, Dracula, the Wolfman, and more have been haunting guests for decades, making appearances in houses, shows, and beyond.

In 2020, Universal was determined to keep the Universal Monsters legacy alive—even in a year when Halloween Horror Nights looked a little different. Although the full event was scaled back, three haunted houses opened during daytime park hours as part of a special “seasonal experience,” one of which was Universal Monsters: The Bride of Frankenstein Lives. The best part? She made a triumphant return in 2021 for HHN30.

Universal Monsters have become a staple of the event—and now…

Epic Universe: The Next Chapter

Epic Universe’s Dark Universe

Ever since Monster’s Cafe closed its doors at Universal Studios Florida, fans have been craving a new permanent home for the iconic monsters. That wish is finally coming true—Dark Universe will be unveiled with the grand opening of Epic Universe in May 2025.

The highly anticipated Dark Universe will feature multiple thrilling components—including two major attractions: Curse of the Werewolf, a family-friendly coaster, and Monsters Unchained: The Frankenstein Experiment, a dark ride that plunges guests into the eerie catacombs of Frankenstein Manor. But beware—Frankenstein’s Monster isn’t the only creature lurking in the shadows!

At Das Stakehaus, you’ll find vampire-approved cuisine where there’ll be stakes on steaks. Over at The Burning Blade Tavern, dine beneath the iconic flaming windmill, a nod to the climactic scene from the 1931 Frankenstein film. And De Lacey’s Cottage offers a more heartfelt touch, inspired by the very place where Frankenstein’s Monster first experienced kindness and enjoyed a meal after escaping the laboratory.

Universal Orlando Resort is on track to open its newest theme park,  Epic Universe, on May 22, 2025. Among its five awe-inspiring areas is How to Train Your Dragon – Isle of Berk, a world based on the How to Train Your Dragon franchise. Berk is set to have the most attractions of the areas within Universal Epic Universe, so it’s important to brush up on Dragons’ lore. This means getting our hands on all the reference materials we can. With that, we have you covered with the movies to help prepare for your next trip!

Epic Universe's How to Train Your Dragon – Isle of Berk
Epic Universe’s How to Train Your Dragon – Isle of Berk

As guests are meant to be completely immersed in Hiccup and Toothless’ world, everything about the Viking village of Berk is meant to be an attraction. Isle of Berk is inspired by the events of How to Train Your Dragon 2, when Berk has become an idyllic home to both Vikings and dragons alike. This makes the sequel the most essential film for understanding Berk’s current story—though watching the first movie is just as important for a solid foundation.

Fly High at Epic Universe’s How to Train Your Dragon – Isle of Berk

Hiccup's Wing Gliders at Epic Universe's How to Train Your Dragon – Isle of Berk

Hiccup’s Wing Gliders is a family coaster that showcases Hiccup’s innate ingenuity and prepares future dragon riders. While the bond between Viking riders and their dragons is certainly a big part of How to Train Your Dragon 2, you’ll want to make sure to watch the spin-off series Dreamworks Dragons. It spans a lengthy eight seasons, but this will provide a true appreciation of how much dragon-riding has become tied to Viking culture.

Race into Action at Dragon Racer’s Rally

Dragon Racer's Rally at Epic Universe's How to Train Your Dragon – Isle of Berk

Dragon Racer’s Rally goes hand-in-hand with Wing Gliders in terms of what to watch, but it does get a little tricky. Canonically, dragon racing doesn’t begin until the events of the 2014 short film Dragons: Dawn of the Dragon Racers, so make sure to have this and Dragons: Riders of Berk, the first season of the streaming series, on your watch list.

Unleash the Action at Epic Universe’s How to Train Your Dragon – Isle of Berk’s Fyre Drill

Fyre Drill at Epic Universe's How to Train Your Dragon – Isle of Berk

At Fyre Drill, Viking twins Ruffnut and Tuffnut are Berk’s trainers of aspiring riders in tests of skill. The tests mainly involve putting out fires with water cannons and are specific to Epic Universe, but it does pull from the training courses throughout the Dragons series. So be sure to underline the importance of watching as much as you can of the streaming show.

As you gear up for your Viking adventure, why stop there? Check out the must-watch movies before exploring Epic Universe’s Dark Universe, and level up with our top game picks for SUPER NINTENDO WORLD. Ready to make it all happen? As we gear up for the opening of Universal Epic Universe, speculation and elation surround all aspects of the new park. But let’s face it – it’s the rides everyone is most excited about.

Although we can’t experience them firsthand just yet, here’s a look at the most anticipated rides coming to Universal Epic Universe based on what we know so far.

The Ultimate Ride Countdown for Universal Epic Universe

Epic Universe is set to deliver an incredible array of experiences—thrilling attractions, jaw-dropping shows, interactive play areas, world-class entertainment, unforgettable dining, and more. But today, we’re zeroing in on the heart-pounding rides that put you in the action—strapping in, buckling up, and racing along the track.

When the park opens on May 22, 2025, guests will have 11 incredible rides to experience. From fun-filled excitement to hold-onto-your-seat, pulse-pounding, unforgettably amazing, and out-of-this-world exhilarating, here’s the lineup!

Constellation Carousel inside Universal Epic Universe
Constellation Carousel at Universal Epic Universe

The 11th ride on our list is Constellation Carousel. This beautiful all-ages experience reimagines the classic merry-go-round with celestial creatures like lions, dragons, and peacocks that rotate 360 degrees and rise six feet in the air. The ceiling showcases a Star Tracker with rotating celestial patterns, while the Mesmerizer creates a stunning ribbon cone effect overhead.

With smaller turntables inside the main one, this isn’t your average carousel—it’s dynamic, imaginative, and perfect for everyone in your party. Although not space-themed and working on a more basic carousel turntable, you might compare it to Walt Disney World’s Prince Charming Regal Carrousel at Magic Kingdom Park for the similar intricate designs and whimsical figures, though Constellation Carousel will be an all-new, exciting experience. You’ll definitely want to check it out!

Height Requirement: Children under 48″ must have a supervising companion; hand-held infants are not allowed.

#10 | Fyre Drill (How to Train Your Dragon – Isle of Berk)

Fyre Drill at Epic Universe's How to Train Your Dragon – Isle of Berk
Fyre Drill at Universal Epic Universe

Looking to beat the heat? The 10th ride on our list is for you! Fyre Drill is a family-friendly, interactive boat ride where Viking twins Ruffnut and Tuffnut have turned Berk’s Fyre Skööl into a playful water-based competition.

Guests use onboard water cannons to aim at flame-like targets and other boats. You can shoot water over 28 feet to hit targets and other Viking ships! This ride blends the relaxed pace of classic boat rides like Jungle Cruise with the competitive fun of interactive attractions like Illumination’s Villain-Con Minion Blast—all with the prospect of getting drenched! Fyre Drill is a surefire way to cool you down on a hot Florida day.

Height Requirement: Children under 48″ must have a supervising companion; hand-held infants are not allowed.

#9 | Yoshi’s Adventure (SUPER NINTENDO WORLD)

Concept Art for Yoshi's Adventure at Epic Universe's SUPER NINTENDO WORLD
Yoshi’s Adventure at Universal Epic Universe

Ranked as our ninth most anticipated ride, Yoshi’s Adventure is a charming, family-friendly journey through the Mushroom Kingdom. Riders join Yoshi on a quest to find glowing eggs, bringing the beloved character and his adventures to life.

This ride is all about theming—vivid colors, intricate details, and so much to take in. It’s designed to captivate young kids, whose faces will light up with wonder, and parents will love watching them soak up the magic. I adore slow rides with beautiful theming and plenty to see, and I can’t wait to experience this with my toddler. I know he’s going to love every second of it!

With interactive elements and scenic views of this mega-themed land, Yoshi’s Adventure is a slow-moving ride perfect for relaxing and taking in all the sights and sounds. This is the ride you enjoy after a day full of thrills, taking it all in at a slower pace.

Height Requirement: 34” minimum (supervising companion required for guests under 48”).

#8 | Dragon Racer’s Rally (How to Train Your Dragon – Isle of Berk)

Dragon Racer's Rally at Epic Universe's How to Train Your Dragon – Isle of Berk
Dragon Racer’s Rally at Universal Epic Universe

A high-flying adventure, Dragon Racer’s Rally brings Berk’s favorite pastime, Dragon Racing, to life—and it’s number eight on our list.

Riders will soar up to 67 feet on Viking-crafted dragon-riding trainers, performing thrilling aerobatics and barrel rolls. With the ability to customize your experience from “mild” to “wild” by adjusting how much your “dragon” flips, this ride tests your skills as you practice to become a dragon-racing champion.

Some might underestimate this kind of attraction, thinking it’s tamer than a traditional coaster—but don’t be fooled. For those who aren’t natural thrill-seekers, flipping and spinning through the air can actually feel more intense. Since this ride type isn’t common, it offers a unique thrill. The innovative concept and replayability could make this a ride you’ll want to experience again and again!

Height Requirement: Riders must be at least 48” tall.

#7 | Mine-Cart Madness (SUPER NINTENDO WORLD)

Concept Art for Mine-Cart Madness Epic Universe's SUPER NINTENDO WORLD
Mine-Cart Madness at Universal Epic Universe

Mine-Cart Madness comes in at number seven on our most anticipated rides list.

On this new family coaster, you’ll join Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong on a wild adventure through the jungle to protect the Golden Banana. Just like in Donkey Kong Country, your mine cart will leap across gaps in the track—a cutting-edge feature that’s sure to surprise and delight both fans and newcomers alike.

While this sounds thrilling, the lower height requirement means it’s designed to be a perfect family experience. It could easily become many young Nintendo fans’ first roller coaster adventure.

Height Requirement: Riders must be at least 40” tall to board Mine-Cart Madness, with a supervising companion required for guests under 48”. Hand-held infants are not allowed.

#6 | Mario Kart: Bowser’s Challenge (SUPER NINTENDO WORLD)

Concept Art for Mario Kart: Bowser;s Challenge e at Epic Universe's SUPER NINTENDO WORLD
Mario Kart: Bowser’s Challenge at Universal Epic Universe

Coming in at number six on our list is another attraction I’m really excited about! Mario Kart: Bowser’s Challenge brings the iconic racing video game to life. With special goggles, riders team up with Mario, Luigi, and Princess Peach to take on Bowser’s team. You’ll navigate underwater worlds, soar through clouds, collect coins, and launch shells in this revolutionary racing adventure.

Fans of competitive rides like MEN IN BLACK Alien Attack or Toy Story Mania are sure to love this video game-inspired adventure. Its blend of storytelling and interactive elements also gives me a bit of Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure vibes from EPCOT.

While it’s a racing-themed ride, don’t expect high speeds—it’s more about the immersive environments, exciting gameplay, and all the details you can take in. It’s going to be a must-ride for gamers!

Height Requirement: Riders must be at least 40” tall to experience Mario Kart: Bowser’s Challenge, with a supervising companion required for guests under 48”.

#5 | Hiccup’s Wing Gliders (How to Train Your Dragon – Isle of Berk)

Hiccup's Wing Gliders at Epic Universe's How to Train Your Dragon – Isle of Berk
Hiccup’s Wing Gliders at Universal Epic Universe

The fifth most anticipated ride, Hiccup’s Wing Gliders, lets guests soar through the skies at speeds of up to 45 mph on a dragon-inspired contraption crafted by Hiccup.

With thrilling dives and sweeping turns alongside Hiccup and Toothless, riders will feel the true spirit of dragon flight. This family coaster offers mid-level thrills—perfect for a first ‘big coaster’ or anyone seeking a fun, high-speed ride.

Online discussions and fan conversations often compare this attraction to Hagrid’s Magical Motorbike Adventure—a massive compliment, considering Hagrid’s is one of the best coasters in the world. While this ride may be less intense, it’s shaping up to be just as immersive, dynamic, and fun. The fact that it’s being compared to Hagrid’s speaks volumes about the excitement and creativity behind it.

Height Requirement: Riders must be at least 40” tall to experience Hiccup’s Wing Gliders, with a supervising companion required for guests under 48”. Handheld infants are not allowed.

#4 | Curse of the Werewolf (Dark Universe)

Curse of the Werewolf at Universal Epic Universe

Coming in at our fourth placement is Curse of the Werewolf, a unique spinning coaster that perfectly blends storytelling with family-friendly thrills.

The adventure starts at the Guild of Mystics’ wagon camp, where you’ll get an ominous warning from a mysterious seer about an ancient curse. Then you’re off, racing through the forest with werewolves in hot pursuit! The best part? Since it’s a free-spin coaster, every ride is totally different. You’ll spin through eerie tunnels and past haunting figures during the two-minute journey, reaching speeds up to 37 mph. The suspense of turning around and possibly coming face-to-face with a monstrous werewolf adds a whole new level of excitement.

Curse of the Werewolf’s synchronized launches and werewolf encounters promise an incredibly immersive experience. I have a feeling this is going to be one of those attractions that draws people back again and again. We’ll have to wait until opening day to know for sure, but I think Curse of the Werewolf will surprise and delight those willing to embrace its eerie charm.

Height Requirement: Guests must be at least 40” tall to ride.

#3 | Stardust Racers (Celestial Park)

Stardust Racers inside Universal Epic Universe
Stardust Racers at Universal Epic Universe

Thrill seekers, get ready! If you’re a coaster enthusiast, Stardust Racers is the ride you’ve been waiting for.

This breathtaking dueling coaster combines classic nostalgia with cutting-edge thrills. Reaching 62 mph, soaring to heights of 133 feet, and covering 4,800 feet of track in just 90 seconds, it’s a high-speed race like no other.

Themed around the Celestians, who harness cosmic energy to ride comets, this beautiful new coaster delivers heart-pounding maneuvers, including the “Celestial Spin”—an inverted crisscross intensifying the thrill of racing side by side.

By night, the glowing ride vehicles streak across the sky like comets, elevating the magic of Universal’s longest coaster. Blending state-of-the-art design with maximum excitement, Stardust Racers promises to be one of the most exciting experiences at Epic Universe!

Height Requirement: This ride requires riders to be at least 48” tall, with child swap available for younger guests.

#2 | Harry Potter and the Battle at the Ministry (The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Ministry of Magic)

Harry Potter and the Battle at the Ministry at The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Ministry of Magic
Harry Potter and the Battle at the Ministry at Universal Epic Universe

Our second most-anticipated ride at Epic Universe is Harry Potter and the Battle at the Ministry, and with Universal keeping many details under wraps, the excitement and anticipation are higher than ever!

You’ll be transported through the Métro-Floo from Paris to the stunning British Ministry of Magic’s grand atrium. The adventure centers around Dolores Umbridge’s trial, which takes a dramatic turn as she escapes, leading to a chase through magical departments alongside Harry, Ron, Hermione, and Higgledy, Umbridge’s house-elf.

The groundbreaking ride system features omnidirectional lifts that move up, down, and side to side, immersing guests in an action-packed escape filled with Death Eaters, magical creatures, and more. Think of the magical elevators from Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, with elements similar to some of the most iconic attractions in the area (think The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror, Harry Potter and the Escape from Gringotts, and Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance).

The best part? With a lower height requirement, this magical adventure will be accessible to many wizarding fans. And given Universal’s track record with Wizarding World attractions, we’re in for some incredible surprises!

Height Requirement: Guests must be at least 40” tall to experience this attraction.

#1 | Monsters Unchained: The Frankenstein Experiment (Dark Universe)

Dark Universe at Universal Epic Universe
Monsters Unchained: The Frankenstein Experiment at Universal Epic Universe

I was excited about Dark Universe—until I saw footage and read descriptions of this ride. Then, I was beyond excited. Unbelievably thrilled. Absolutely blown away!

So, it should come as no surprise that the most anticipated ride coming to Universal Epic Universe has got to be the thrilling, terrifying, revolutionary Monsters Unchained: The Frankenstein Experiment.

Towering over the village of Darkmoor, Monsters Unchained: The Frankenstein Experiment is a terrifying dark ride unlike anything you’ve ever seen. Inside eerie catacombs, Dr. Victoria Frankenstein struggles to control legendary monsters like The Wolf Man, The Mummy, and Dracula. But things go terribly wrong when Dracula breaks free. Universal isn’t holding back – called one of the scariest rides they’ve ever made, this attraction will not be for the faint of heart.

As seen in previews from Universal Orlando Resort, the animatronics are truly mind-blowing, featuring 14 of “the most technologically-advanced animated figures that have ever been built.” Add in the incredible Phantom of the Opera organ shooting flames in sync with haunting music, and we’re looking at something that could redefine dark rides as we know them. This ride is going to be EPIC.

Height Requirement: Guests must be at least 48” tall to ride.

Epic Universe Awaits—Start Your Countdown

Universal Orlando Resort’s newest theme park, Epic Universe, is on track to open on May 22, 2025. Like many others, we eagerly anticipate the debut of one of Epic Universe’s five areas: Dark Universe. This shadowy realm draws inspiration from Universal’s Classic Monsters movie franchise. Dark Universe centers around the village of Darkmoor—a place where monsters, monster-makers, and their hunters reside among innocent residents just trying to survive.

With Darkmoor’s distinct narrative, innovative attractions, and shops on the horizon, you’re likely wondering how to prepare for all the excitement. Of course, the movies from Universal Pictures’ Classic Monsters collection are a great starting point. Navigating this extensive lineup, however, can be tricky. To help, we have a definitive guide of what to know and the movies to watch in preparation for your travels.

Monsters Unchained: The Frankenstein Experiment

Monsters Unchained: The Frankenstein Experiment at Universal Epic Universe

Monsters Unchained: The Frankenstein Experiment is practically a who’s who of Classic Monsters characters. Guests will come face-to-face with Victoria Frankenstein, the great-great-granddaughter of Dr. Henry Frankenstein, as well as Frankenstein’s Monster, Dracula, the Wolf Man, and the Gill-man from The Creature From the Black Lagoon.

Frankenstein’s Monster has seven movies in its canon, but we’d suggest 1931’s Frankenstein and 1935’s Bride of Frankenstein. These will help to understand the monster and its original creator, Henry. As for our famous vampire, 1931’s Dracula would be the one to see since almost every version of him has been inspired by that film. Turning to the Gill-man, you’ll want to watch The Creature From the Black Lagoon and The Creature Walks Among Us from his canon trilogy.

Curse of the Werewolf

The Wolf Man has a total of five movies in his Universal Classic Monsters canon. Curse of the Werewolf also features Maleva, the omniscient leader of The Guild of Mystics, as our guide. To prepare, we recommend watching 1941’s The Wolf Man and its 2010 remake. Both Maleva and the Wolf Man appear in these iterations and will give you a base idea of what to expect.

Pretorius’ Scientific Oddities

Pretorius’ Scientific Oddities at Universal Epic Universe
Pretorius’ Scientific Oddities at Universal Epic Universe

1935’s Bride of Frankenstein will clue you into who Dr. Septimus Pretorius is. As the other resident mad scientist of Dark Universe, his most famous work is The Bride. Dr. Pretorius is thought to have met his doom by the film’s conclusion, but his devotees have placed his experiments on full display at Darkmoor’s flagship store, Pretorius’ Scientific Oddities. Who knows? You might just leave inspired to continue his experiments… or at least with a few eerie souvenirs for your own collection.

Darkmoor Village’s Character Experiences

Meet the Dark Universe Characters

Guests exploring Darkmoor Village will have plenty of meet-and-greet opportunities. Outside of the village inhabitants and monster hunters, they’ll encounter Frankenstein’s Monster, The Bride (both previously mentioned), The Invisible Man, and Dr. Frankenstein’s assistant, Ygor. While there are six movies in the classic Invisible Man canon and a remake, you’ll be fine to just watch 1933’s The Invisible Man.

It should be mentioned that, while he’s still essentially the same character, the assistant to the Frankenstein family was originally named Fritz. Ygor wouldn’t appear until 1938’s Son of Frankenstein and its follow-up, Ghost of Frankenstein. So we’d suggest adding those two to the watchlist as well.

Universal Orlando Resort is redefining the theme park game with the opening of its newest property, Epic Universe, which is on track to open on May 22, 2025. While it will consist of five brand new, uniquely themed areas, one of the most anticipated is SUPER NINTENDO WORLD. The land will feature four innovative attractions: Mine-Cart Madness, Yoshi’s Adventure, Mario Kart: Bowser’s Challenge, and Bowser Jr. Shadow Showdown. The latter is an interactive in-park side game where guests can unlock access by collecting three keys earned through activities inspired by the Mario Party series.

If you’re like us, the question of what games to play in preparation for becoming a SUPER NINTENDO WORLD superstar has crossed your mind. Of course, you’ll want to start with the original Super Mario Bros. for the Nintendo Entertainment System. As the details get complex from there, we’ve compiled a definitive list of what games to focus on before visiting the Mushroom Kingdom.

Mario Kart: Bowser’s Challenge

It goes without saying that Mario Kart is one of Nintendo’s most hallowed franchises, with a current total of 15 games that span multiple consoles. Most of the inspiration for Mario Kart: Bowser’s Challenge comes from 2014’s Mario Kart 8 entry on the Nintendo Wii.

Mario Kart's queue at Super Nintendo World

Based on the Hollywood and Japanese iterations, this is evident in the ride’s queue, which takes guests through Bowser’s castle, complete with stunning interior decor and trophies representing each racing circuit from Mario Kart 8. This attention to detail extends to the attraction’s ride vehicles as well. Keen-eyed guests will also notice the Mario Kart TV broadcasting van (Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, anyone?) parked in the queue.

Mine-Cart Madness

Mine-Cart Madness pulls its inspiration directly from the first Donkey Kong Country game on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System. It’s the name of the 27th level of the game and, more specifically, the fifth level of its fifth land. That may seem a little far into the game to play, but the Donkey Kong Country franchise is a popular one for a very good reason. This level can act as a virtual preview of the cart jumps and track breaks we can look forward to at the SUPER NINTENDO WORLD attraction.

Yoshi’s Adventure

Concept Art for Yoshi's Adventure at Epic Universe's SUPER NINTENDO WORLD
Concept Art for Yoshi’s Adventure at Epic Universe’s SUPER NINTENDO WORLD

Players of the Super Mario Bros. franchise were first introduced to Mario and Luigi’s trusted steed and enemy-eating sidekick in Super Mario World on the Super Nintendo console. Yoshi was then given more prominence in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi’s Island, which established Yoshi as part of the Super Mario Bros. franchise.

These two games are key to understanding Yoshi as a group within the series. In both Super Mario World titles, Yoshi is deeply woven into Mario’s story. Players gain insight into these lovable dinosaurs, learning about their different types, unique abilities, and the fact that “Yoshi” refers both to the iconic character and the species as a whole.

Bowser Jr. Shadow Showdown

Bowser Jr. Shadow Showdown in Super Nintendo World at Universal Studios Hollywood
Bowser Jr. Shadow Showdown in Universal Studios Hollywood

Bowser’s only son was first introduced in the Nintendo Gamecube’s Super Mario Sunshine, where he was disguised as Shadow Mario and acted as the main antagonist. This is the game to focus on for the character, but those wanting supplemental material will want to turn their gaze to Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam as the Nintendo 3DS game adds to Bowser Jr.’s story.

Additionally, Super Mario Bros: Wonder for the Nintendo Switch is perfect here, as the Hollywood and Japan versions of Bowser Jr. Shadow Showdown utilize black silhouettes and shadow-based gameplay. Similarly, many levels in Wonder feature a comparable visual style, giving players an excellent opportunity to adjust to this unique format.

As Universal Orlando Resort prepares to unveil its latest theme park, Epic Universe, anticipation heightens with a first look at Stardust Racers inside Celestial Park. This area, the first that guests will explore before venturing into the realms of Universal’s newest theme park, features the impressive 5,000-foot track of Stardust Racers, stretching across Celestial Park’s skyline.

Stardust Racers inside Universal Epic Universe

Until now, details about Stardust Racers have been limited. It’s known as a dueling coaster where thrill-seekers can hit speeds of up to 62 miles per hour and ascend to heights of 133 feet. Complementing the cosmic vibe of Celestial Park, the ride lacks traditional track lighting, which allows its fully illuminated vehicles to mimic shooting stars under the night sky. Today’s reveal brings more details, heightening the excitement as we count down to the grand opening of Epic Universe.

Epic Universe's Celestial Park
Stardust Racers inside Epic Universe

Universal Orlando Resort emphasizes storytelling in its attractions, and Stardust Racers is a prime example. The narrative introduced today reveals that the Celestians, inhabitants of Celestial Park, have mastered the ability to harness the energy from the universe. This power allows them to leap onto comets and surf across the skies.

A highlight from today’s reveal was the “Celestial Spin,” a breathtaking maneuver in which two coaster vehicles execute an inverted crisscross. As they soar through the air, riders can glimpse the other vehicle below before swiftly swapping positions. Today’s release from Universal Orlando Resort included actual footage of this maneuver, showcasing its innovative design.

Known as the governing body for the magical community in Great Britain and Ireland, the Ministry of Magic comes to life in Harry Potter and the Battle at the Ministry. Here is how Universal described this new offering:

The adventure begins when guests travel by Métro-Floo – a unique mode of wizarding transit inspired by the iconic Floo Network seen in the films – to journey from wizarding Paris to the British Ministry of Magic for the long-awaited trial of the infamous Dolores Umbridge. Upon arrival, guests will enter the Ministry’s jaw-dropping grand atrium and venture through other departments before boarding magical, omnidirectional lifts to watch the trial take place…until Umbridge attempts to escape. Guests then join Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, Hermione Granger, and a house-elf named Higgledy in a thrilling chase that will propel them up, down, forward, backward, sideways, and more throughout the Ministry as they try to capture Umbridge – all while dodging attacks from Death Eaters, rampaging creatures and more along the way.

While exploring the streets of Place Cachée, guests may encounter other visitors, officials, and residents from the wizarding world, including exchange Students from the Hogwarts and Ilvermorny Schools of Witchcraft and Wizardry, an Auror from the Ministère des Affaires Magiques de la France who roams inquiring of suspicious characters, talking portraits of delightful wizards who engage with locals about the happenings in Place Cachée, and more.

Given the caliber of The Wizarding World’s attractions at Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure, visitors can expect an array of truly unforgettable experiences.

Dining in The Wizarding World

The existing lands of Hogsmeade and Diagon Alley at Universal Orlando Resort have already delighted us with a taste of British cuisine, offering dishes like Beef Pasties, Bangers & Mash, and classic Fish & Chips. Now, it’s time to savor French culinary delights in this new Wizarding World of Harry Potter location.

There is no doubt that a wand is an essential accessory when exploring The Wizarding World. The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Ministry of Magic introduces a new shopping destination for this magical tool at Cosme Acajor Baguettes Magique, a Paris-based store featured in Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald. In addition to imports from Ollivanders, visitors will find a selection of wands packaged in this shop’s signature three-sided boxes, each containing a list of locations throughout the wizarding world where guests can practice casting spells.

Towering above the village of Darkmoor stands the foreboding Frankenstein Manor, shrouded in mystery. Within its walls lies Monsters Unchained: The Frankenstein Experiment, a dark ride that brings you up close to iconic figures such as The Wolf Man, The Mummy, The Creature from the Black Lagoon, the Brides of Dracula, and more. Venture deep into the eerie catacombs where the brilliant Dr. Victoria Frankenstein unveils her latest daring experiments, attempting to harness the power of these iconic monsters. But beware—her control falters, and Dracula breaks free, unleashing a torrent of monstrous fury. Will you escape the clutches of these unleashed horrors?

Venture deeper into Dark Universe where you’ll find Curse of the Werewolf, a family spinning coaster. Based on The Wolf Man, immerse yourself in the origin story of one of horror’s most legendary creatures. Your adventure begins at the encampment of The Guild of Mystics, where you are greeted by Maleva, the guild’s all-knowing seer and revered leader. With a grave tone, she warns that you carry the mark of the werewolf. Boarding a wagon, you plunge deep into the forest, twisting and turning in a frantic race to escape the encroaching werewolves. Will you flee in time, or will you transform into the very creature you fear?

Earlier this year, Universal Studios Florida introduced a limited-time makeup experience that transformed guests into iconic silver-screen monsters. It seems this was just a preview of what’s to come with the Dark Universe’s Darkmoor Monster Makeup Experience, promising even more transformations!

Step into the heart of Darkmoor, where monsters eagerly await to greet unsuspecting visitors. Encounter the formidable creations and iconic characters of Dark Universe, including Dr. Victoria Frankenstein’s Monster, Bride of Frankenstein, Ygor, and The Invisible Man. Next, visit De Lacey’s Cottage, a quick-service spot named after the family observed by the monster in Mary Shelley’s novel Frankenstein. Here, guests can find a variety of snacks and cool treats like cinnamon bread, ice cream, twisted taters, and more.

If you share this author’s deep-rooted love for gaming, you know that the term extends far beyond video games. Gaming culture embraces a wide array of pastimes, from board games and card games to the world of theme parks. While it might seem a bit niche, major theme parks like Universal Orlando Resort have been aware of this for ages and have made strides to cater to gaming enthusiasts.

Whether it’s expansive areas like the already popular SUPER NINTENDO WORLD or the Universal Orlando Resort App (which we’ll dive into shortly), there are numerous ways to play and more than you’d think, though we wouldn’t blame you for the oversight. Fortunately, we’ve put together a breakdown for those wanting to get their game on while visiting Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure. This guide goes over what can be found at each park and even some helpful tips for leveling up and maximizing your gaming experience where applicable.

Grab your squad and power up with discounted theme park tickets through Orlando Informer! It’s game on at prices that won’t deplete your coin stash. Check them out here, and let the games begin!

Interactive Attractions

World Expo

MEN IN BLACK Alien Attack

MEN IN BLACK Alien Attack
MEN IN BLACK Alien Attack

One of the most competitive attractions for guests is MEN IN BLACK Alien Attack. Riders join as the MIB’s newest recruits in a training program that becomes a real mission after an alien ship crash-lands in New York City.

MEN IN BLACK Alien Attack is a fan-favorite shooter-style ride where guests collect points throughout the attraction via its various targets. The accumulated points from each vehicle are then averaged to determine whether you’re Bug Bait (less than 100,000), Cosmically Average (100,000 – 150,000), or a Galaxy Defender (over 150,000). Pro tip: we have an in-depth guide for those wanting to max out their score at 999,999.

Minion Land

Illumination’s Villain-Con Minion Blast

Illumination’s Villain-Con Minion Blast offers a unique experience that utilizes a motion-based pathway and handheld blaster. Guests navigate the Villain-Con tradeshow floor as they join the Vicious 6 with their E-Liminator Blaster, using an assortment of weapons to rise through the ranks of bad behavior.

Although it might initially appear as just another shooter-style attraction, this ride is anything but. Gamers can use the Universal Play option in the Universal Orlando Resort app to track their scores and earn trophies, as well as add-ons to customize their blasters.

Arcades

New York

Palace Theater Arcade

Palace Theater Arcade
Palace Theater Arcade

Of course, if we’re talking “games,” arcades are on the docket. Palace Theater Arcade in Universal Studios Florida is more than just a fancy facade. The pay-to-play arcade is themed as a grand movie theater.

Palace Theater Arcade features a fun variety of new and classic arcade games. After putting credit on a play card, guests can enjoy the likes of claw machines, pinball, air hockey, racing simulators, and more. While arcades may not be the primary reason for visiting a theme park, this one is definitely worth a visit to cool down and enjoy a refreshing break. It’s also not uncommon to find this writer pairing a Guitar Hero jam session within Palace Theater’s walls alongside a ride on Revenge of the Mummy.

Marvel Super Hero Island

Kingpin’s Arcade

Palace Theater Arcade

Guests eager to test their luck can visit Kingpin’s Arcade, owned by one of Marvel’s most notorious villains. Enter from the streets of Marvel Super Hero Island, the exit of Doctor Doom’s Fear Fall, or the Cafe 4 entrance and purchase a play card to enjoy a variety of games.

Kingpin’s Arcade stands out as a premier destination for arcade enthusiasts, thanks to its expansive selection of games and immersive theming. Not only is this venue substantially larger with more games to enjoy, but it genuinely feels like a hideout that pays tribute to some of Marvel’s most villainous figures. Inside, you’ll see banners depicting comic versions of popular villains like Red Skull, Baron Zemo, and The Leader. Guests will also catch a look at the Lord of Latveria’s throne as they enter from Doctor Doom’s Fear Fall.

Carnival Games

Springfield: Home of the Simpsons

Simpsons Games

Both Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure feature carnival-style games throughout their parks. In Springfield, classic games like hammer strength, ball toss, balloon popping, and whack-a-mole receive a unique twist, featuring themes like Mr. Burns’ Radioactive Rings and Wac-A-Rat, inspired by Bart and Lisa’s favorite show, Itchy and Scratchy. Winning offers prizes such as a plush Blinky the Three-Eyed Fish, Radioactive Man, or a Sideshow Bob wig.

Jurassic Park

At Islands of Adventure, guests in Jurassic Park will find traditional carnival games themed after aspects from the Jurassic Park and Jurassic World franchises. Guests can test their skills at DNA Sequencer, a novice balloon-popping game, or Target Training, where players use an air cannon to knock down a tower of cans (keep an eye out for the Barbasol can Easter egg). There’s also Hammond’s Hot Shots, a dinosaur-themed hoop game. Guests can take home prizes like a shiny dino plush.

Toon Lagoon

Toon Lagoon Games

Toon Lagoon Games offers a delightful selection of classic carnival games similar to those found across Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure. Favorites like Tub Toss, water gun races, and the ever-popular Whack-a-Mole feature more traditional themes yet boast some of this writer’s favorite prizes. Located close to Marvel Super Hero Island, guests can win basketballs themed with Groot or other prizes that gaming fans would love, like a plush Reptar, Minions, and even E.T.

Opening in 2025, How to Train Your Dragon – Isle of Berk at Epic Universe will be a land where the entire family can step into a fantastical world where Vikings and dragons live in harmony! In Fyre Drill, guests are invited to play during an interactive boat ride where every member of the family can partake in a friendly competition with onboard water cannons that shoot 28-foot streams of water to take out flame-like targets and even competing boats.

SUPER NINTENDO WORLD

Mario Kart: Bowser’s Challenge

Coming in 2025, SUPER NINTENDO WORLD in Epic Universe is bringing Mario Kart: Bowser’s Challenge to Universal Orlando Resort. Guests team up with Princess Peach, Luigi, and our hero, Mario, in a cutting-edge attraction that uses specialized goggles, putting you directly into the game! Riders compete against Team Bowser, collecting coins and tossing shells at opponents while skillfully dodging obstacles in this thrilling race. Their coin collection and overall score are recorded via SUPER NINTENDO WORLD’s Power-Up Bands.

We were able to check out the hit attraction at Universal Studios Hollywood and look forward to its premiere at Universal Orlando Resort next year.

Power-Up Band activities

Power-Up Bands from Super Nintendo World inside Universal Studios Hollywood
Power-Up Bands from SUPER NINTENDO WORLD inside Universal Studios Hollywood

It’s worth noting that to fully engage with the interactive activities at SUPER NINTENDO WORLD, guests need to acquire the land’s innovative Power-Up Bands. Available in six different styles – Mario, Luigi, Peach, Daisy, Toad, and Yoshi – these bands function similarly to a mix between the Wizarding World of Harry Potter’s interactive wands and Volcano Bay’s TapuTapu. While these bands are sold separately, they enhance the immersive experience of the land significantly. However, guests can still enjoy racing in Mario Kart: Bowser’s Challenge and exploring SUPER NINTENDO WORLD without a band.

Question Mark Block at SUPER NINTENDO WORLD in Universal Studios Hollywood
Question Mark Block from SUPER NINTENDO WORLD inside Universal Studios Hollywood

SUPER NINTENDO WORLD’s interactive activities vary from hitting question-mark blocks to slot machines (both of which grant players digital coins) and even activities that reward players with virtual character stamps (which are, in turn, worth even more coins). The more coins gathered by players, the greater their overall score, which creates a fun and competitive experience for guests of all ages.

As excited as we are about this aspect of Orlando’s SUPER NINTENDO WORLD, we’re looking forward to an even bigger mini-game.

Bowser Jr. Shadow Showdown

Bowser Jr. Shadow Showdown in Super Nintendo World at Universal Studios Hollywood
Bowser Jr. Shadow Showdown in SUPER NINTENDO WORLD at Universal Studios Hollywood

Bowser Jr. has stolen the Golden Mushroom and locked it away in his fortress. To reclaim it, players must collect three keys by overcoming interactive challenges set by his minions throughout the Mushroom Kingdom, creating an experience reminiscent of a live-action Mario Party. Here are the key challenges we can expect:

  • Goomba Crazy Crank – knock the Goomba off the roller by spinning the crank as fast as possible
  • Koopa Troopa POWer Punch – swipe your Power-Up Band at the right moment to hit a POW block, sending a turtle shell up a warp pipe, thereby taking out a passing Koopa Troopa
  • Piranha Plant Nap Mishap – turn off all the alarm clocks before Petey Piranha wakes up from his nap
  • Thwomp Panel Panic – flip every blue question-mark-block panel to a yellow exclamation-point-block one (in the right order) before the Thwomp strikes
  • Bob-omb Kaboom Room – solve the coin puzzle before the Bomb-omb goes off

Once players have collected all three keys, they will be granted access to Bowser Jr. Shadow Showdown. This interactive virtual reality game involves players using their whole bodies as they duck, jump, and swat in small groups while confronting Bowser Jr. and his flying Clown Car. Super Nintendo World’s final boss battle promises a different kind of attraction than the company’s typical fare. Victory against Bowser Jr. not only earns you additional coins but also bragging rights on the leaderboards.
