Keep note that children must be at least six years old to swim with dolphins.

Additionally, you can explore The Grand Reef, swimming alongside a diverse array of tropical fish in a stunning coral reef setting.

During these water experiences, Discovery Cove ensures guest safety and well-being with lifeguards stationed throughout, providing peace of mind during your visit.

Discovery Cove is one of the best experiences Orlando has to offer. This all-inclusive escape from reality is unlike anything else you’ll find in the City Beautiful. Within its borders is a tropical paradise secluded from the bustle of its surroundings, where guests can eat, drink, swim, and sway the day away. This day resort offers guests the opportunity to meet some of nature’s most awesome animals and get to know how they’re taken care of while gaining a better understanding of them.

Bottlenose Dolphins

While a wide array of birds and mammals await you as part of the Discovery Cove Resort Package during your visit, others are available as part of an upgraded experience, like their famous Animal Trek and Shark Swim packages. As big fans of Discovery Cove, we wanted to share some of our favorite animals that reside at the park and how you can meet them.

Taking a glance at their logo, Discovery Cove is expected to feature a porpoise or two on the list of animals you can find. As such, the resort is home to a pod of Bottlenose Dolphins. Guests wishing to meet them can do so by purchasing the Discovery Cove Resort Package with Dolphin Swim, which includes a meet-and-greet with one of them, and a memorable photo opportunity, and “swim” session. While this is the only way to have an up-close interaction, guests can always catch them doing tricks and swimming throughout the day from the shore of Dolphin Lagoon.

As a pro tip, those interested in purchasing the Dolphin Swim package will want to remember to be at the resort during the start of check-in, which is at 7:30 AM daily. This may seem a bit early, especially when you’re on vacation, but doing so will help ensure the best selection of return times to select from for your interaction and photo session. Take it from this writer– Florida sunlight can be intrusive that afternoon. If you opt for a more leisurely morning, no need to fret! Return times are typically still available if you arrive later than 7:30 AM.

Reef Sharks

Imagine swimming alongside some of nature’s most fearsome-looking predators. Shark fans visiting Discovery Cove can face their fears while living in the thrill of encountering reef sharks with their Shark Swim upgrade! This package takes place in the resort’s Grand Reef, home to four species of reef sharks: Blacktip Reef, Nurse, Zebra, and Bonnetheads. Each is unique from the other and a necessary part of the ocean’s vast ecosystem. While they can reach upwards of 12 feet in length, don’t worry – Discovery Cove’s trained experts will teach guests why they shouldn’t fear them right away, their care at the resort, and that there’s more to them than meets the eye.

Discovery Cove’s Shark Swim upgrade begins at $169 plus tax. Those interested will be proud of their purchase knowing that five percent of the proceeds go towards the Guy Harvey Foundation, which helps fund oceanic scientific research and educational programs. Alternatively, shark enthusiasts wanting to simply catch a view of the park’s 20+ reef sharks can also do so via a plexiglass window in the Grand Reef.

Rays

One of the easiest ways to meet one of Discovery Cove’s many aquatic denizens is to simply head over to the Grand Reef. Here, visitors will come across one of the biggest and most energetic creatures on the property – rays! Of the two varieties, the park has six Southern Rays, which are famously massive in size, and 34 speedy Cownose Rays. Both tend to swim across the entirety of the Grand Reef, but the Southern Rays tend to stick to the deeper, more spacious end while the Cownose will usually be found near the shore.

While the opportunity to interact and take pictures with the rays of the Grand Reef is included, Discovery Cove offers an upgrade that allows guests to assist in their morning feeding. This typically takes place at around 8:30 AM and has a starting price of $59 plus tax.

Moray Eels

If you swim far enough through the Grand Reef’s waters, you’ll come across a hidden grotto full of some amazing moray eels. As impressive as they appear, one cannot deny the incredible photos you can snag of them lurking from the crevices of the habitat they call home. These eels live with friends like the Balloon and Lion Fish behind the plexiglass of their designated reef area. Interestingly, moray eels tend to vary in appearance, either covered in spots or blended into their surroundings.

As the Grand Reef is this writer’s favorite aspect of Discovery Cove due to how many animal encounters are available here, I can say that readers will want to cover every corner of it. Those in search of its eels will want to swim along the right side of the Grand Reef as the tank is built into the reef’s walls.

Asian Small-Clawed Otter

The Freshwater Oasis has been a part of Discovery Cove since 2012. From its opening, it’s been home to one of the most adorable creatures you’ll find on the park’s property: the Asian Small-Clawed Otter. These clever critters can be found scampering, swimming, and playing with the rest of their romp at just about any time of the day. While guests can’t directly interact with them, the otters will sometimes swim right up to the viewing glass. Even when they aren’t up close, there are still plenty of moments guests can take advantage of for some cute photos to take home.

As the Freshwater Oasis is part of their habitat, taking in the sight of the Asian Small-Claw Otters is included as part of the Day Resort Package experience. In addition to their play times, there are also “enrichment sessions” that take place. These vary daily but can be found in the Discovery Cove app.

Geoffrey’s Marmosets

Discovery Cove’s Freshwater Oasis is also home to Geoffrey’s Marmosets. These playful, small monkeys are easily recognized by their puffy, white manes surrounding their tiny faces. Their habitat, Marmoset Island, features tons of bridges, houses, and hammocks for them to lounge, play, and leap between. A moat surrounds their open-air home that they may approach closely but never cross.

During certain hours of the day, guests can also speak with one of the resort’s zoological professionals who can inform them about the resident marmosets. These times, as well as their enrichment hours, can be found via the Discovery Cove app.

Parrots

Within the Explorer’s Aviary of Discovery Cove are hundreds of members of 12 species of birds. One of the most amazing types are Parrots. The most popular of these is the colorful Macaw, which can be seen in the blue and red varieties. However, there are many other parrots as well, like Sun Conures and Cockatiels. When they aren’t found in the free-flying sanctum, this writer will usually find the latter when floating along the intersecting streams of the Wind-Away River.

Guests wanting a more up-close encounter will want to opt for the Animal Trek upgrade. Like many of the other animals, the thirty-minute experience includes an informative photo session with one of Discover Cove’s Macaws. Additionally, there are also moments when one of these feathery friends can be found during an Avian Animal Connections session in the park.

Sloths

Of the list of nature’s wondrous creatures seen at Discovery Cove, one of the most unique is the Two-Toed Sloth. The park is home to both the Linnaeu’s and Hoffman’s varieties. While they don’t have a publicly accessible habitat, they can be seen during the park’s Animal Connection sessions and as part of the Animal Trek upgrade. During either opportunity, guests can ask the handling expert anything they’d like to learn about the leisurely critters.

The Two-Toed Sloth spends its entire life hanging upside down from trees and is incapable of walking. While guests of Discovery Cove aren’t able to hold or carry them, they are able to take photos with them.

Anteaters

Another one of the more uncommon animals that Discovery Cove is home to is the Southern Tamandua, or “anteaters” as they’re commonly called. Much like other animals found across their family of parks, these are usually brought in by the parent company’s conservation partners. Similar to the sloths, their habitat isn’t accessible to the general public. However, anyone wanting to meet a Southern Tamandua (and seriously, who wouldn’t?) has a few options. Southern Tamanduas are sometimes part of upgrades like Animal Trek and Trainer for a Day, like Celeste who is their newest resident. They can also be seen as one of the spotlighted mammals during the Animal Connections sessions.

Eastern Screech Owl

Among the many feathered friends you’ll make at the resort, the Eastern Screech Owl stands out among the rest. While they’re called “Screech Owls,” these birds have two kinds of calls that aren’t actually screeches. The first is called a “tremolo,” an even-pitched trill typically used between mates. The other is a “whinny,” which has been compared to the sound of a high-pitched, tiny horse. Their most recent Eastern Screech Owls is Henry, a displaced rescue brought in with his family by the Audobahn Center for Birds of Prey. While his family could return to the wild, he had to remain due to his beak not developing correctly. Thankfully, he now has a home at Discovery Cove with some of the best caretakers he could have happened upon.

Interacting with owls like Henry is minimal due to his species’ nature. However, this allows you to capture memorable moments through photography, making it a unique and enjoyable experience. Like many other animals at Discovery Cove, anyone wanting to meet Henry can have the opportunity as part of the Animal Trek upgrade.

There are tons of personality types out there and, as a result, not every plan fits all. Putting together an itinerary for one person can look very different from another, as Discovery Cove can be suitable for just about anyone.

The Adventurer

The Adventurer is the kind of guest who wants those once-in-a-lifetime experiences. They live for the thrills and love walking away with a story to tell. They want tales that will excite others. Guests who fall under this category can see the world from unique perspectives, partake in hands-on animal interactions such as ray feeding, and even stroll among some of the ocean’s most fearsome beasts.

When visiting Discovery Cove, the Adventurer will be at home in the Grand Reef, which is an incredible experience that’s included with the cost of admission. Guests don the complimentary snorkel gear and enter the 76-degree waters. Once in, they’ll find themselves swimming alongside vibrantly colored tropical fish and majestic rays of all sizes. Further into the Grand Reef, they can swim right up to tanks holding reef sharks, eels, and balloon fish. Those wanting to up the ante might be interested in the Shark Swim, which teams guests up with the resort’s experts as enter the habitat holding the aforementioned reef sharks.

As awesome as this sounds, however, it’s arguable that one of their best options is Discovery Cove’s SeaVenture upgrade. Starting at $49 per person, this option allows guests to equip astronaut-like diving helmets as they descend twelve feet to the Grand Reef’s floor and walk amongst its inhabitants.

The Vacationer

If you’re the go-with-the-flow type, this one will speak to you. The Vacationer abides by the tides of the day as schedules are less of a contractual “to-do” list and more of a set of guidelines for their experience. They define checking out of reality and checking into paradise. You can usually catch them swaying the day away in a choice hammock or carelessly floating along the most remarkable streams. Luxury is a fine art they’ve become connoisseurs of, and if a single phrase were to sum them up, it’s “work hard, relax harder.”

In our opinion, Serenity Bay or the Wind-Away River are the best places for the Vacationer. The resort’s most popular upgrade, The Signature Dolphin Swim, would be right up their alley. On top of what’s already included with the general admission price, guests will participate in a one-on-one swimming session and photos with the park’s resident dolphins for an unforgettable experience.

Consistently considered one of the highest-rated parks in Orlando, Discovery Cove is a hidden, tropical oasis within the hustle and bustle of the City Beautiful. It’s an all-inclusive escape from reality and a rare find in our corner of the world. The park is quite easy to explore independently, with plenty of opportunities to enjoy a self-guided visit. With that in mind, allow us to give you some pointers in maximizing your day from what is easily considered a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Arrive early

Discovery Cove is meant to be experienced at each guest’s leisure. However, there should be some emphasis on getting there early. Check-in at the resort begins at 7:15 A.M. Even though Discovery Coveis certainly never crowded due to its daily capacity limit, there are perks to entering the park early. Once settled in, you can leisurely enjoy your day. Please note that for upgraded experiences like the Signature Dolphin Swim, it’s best to schedule it in the morning. The reservation times for their upgrade offerings are given on a first-come, first-served basis. This means that the earlier you are, the better your return time options will be for those photos – more on that later.

Even if yours is a Day Resort Package, arriving early also has some additional benefits. Early guests will have ample time to find a locker, collect their complimentary equipment, and get changed. They’ll also have an opportunity to get accustomed to the park and sort out where they’d like to begin while grabbing a bite to eat before the waterways open at 9 A.M. If readers want my lead, I always start by drifting along the Wind Away River, but there’s nothing wrong with simply swaying into the day with a beverage and a choice hammock.

Know what to bring and what is provided

Included with the price of admission is a slew of entitlements. Guests are provided complimentary lockers, towels, and shower facilities, as well as vests, wetsuits, snorkels, swim masks, and floatation device rentals. During their visit, sunscreen is highly recommended for everyone as you’ll be outdoors for most of the time. While it is provided, we know some guests may prefer to bring their own, so just be sure it’s an animal-friendly option for the safety of the resort’s residents.

Speaking of what guests need to bring, it’s best to pack minimally and only take the essentials. This includes a government-issued identification such as a driver’s license or passport for everyone aged 18 and older, completed waivers for any minors in the family, and a credit or debit card that can be linked to the lanyard provided by the park at check-in.

Lastly, you’ll want to bring your bathing suit, along with a dry change of clothes. The latter is very important as Discovery Cove is still a water park by definition, and changing out of wet clothes will ensure your comfort as you head home. A submersible camera is also strongly suggested so you can take time to capture those cherished memories without having to worry.

Come Hungry

Meal budgeting is always a top priority when planning a park visit, and managing your appetite can make your overall experience even more enjoyable. Thankfully, Discovery Cove has you covered! The park’s centerpiece restaurant, Laguna Grill, serves breakfast from 7:30 A.M. until 10:30 A.M. after which they’ll serve lunch from 11 A.M. to 3:30 P.M.

During their operating hours, guests will be served freshly prepared foods such as eggs, bacon, and french toast sticks for breakfast. Lunch features burgers, sandwiches, and salads, along with some tasty side and dessert choices. Soft drinks, juice, beer, and wine are also available throughout the day to wash it down.

Guests also have the delicious option of Hibiscus Hideaway, which is available from 10:30 A.M. through 4:30 P.M. Enjoy a variety of flatbread pizzas and cool off with soft serve ice cream and Icees. If you are looking for something to snack on, head over to the Blue Bamboo Bar for chips, fruit, pretzels, and cookies. For the adults in your party who are over the legal drinking age, they can enjoy beer and wine included in their day at the day resort.

Personally, this entitlement never misses me. I arrive with an empty belly and make sure to take complete advantage of all they offer. I fuel up at Laguna Grill by filling my plate at least twice and snagging any snacks and beverages I desire in between. As a pro-tip here, I’d suggest arriving at the start of each meal time at the grill. Everyone is always welcome to find their own path to paradise, but it’s not uncommon for the middle hours of both breakfast and lunch to be busier.

Visit the Aviary in the morning

Located just past the waterfalls of Wind Away River is a hidden gem within the bliss of Discovery Cove. Explorer’s Aviary is an open area where various species of our feathered friends from all over the globe fly freely. This writer can spend literal hours just propped at the aviary’s bridge as I watch hundreds of vibrantly colored birds simply exist around me. I’ve even been lucky enough to catch some of them perched by the river’s entryway as I floated past Explorer’s Aviary.

Any readers wanting to maximize the opportunity for an Insta-worthy memory will want to stop in the aviary during optimum times. This means hopping over within the first two hours of Discovery Cove’s operation and grabbing one of their complimentary cups of bird feed.

Float along Wind Away River

Over at Wind Away River, guests are carried along streaming currents starting from a waterfall-draped cove, which transitions into a river flowing through a tropical rainforest. Guest will pass by Explorer’s Aviary and cruise by Freshwater Oasis, home to the resort’s family of Asian-Clawed Otters and Marmoset Island. Each has its own enrichment times, which can vary, but are presented within the Discovery Cove app – weather permitting, of course.

While body-surfing along the paradisal stream, you’ll want to remember that Wind Away River’s depth shifts from time to time. Thankfully, there’s always signage alerting you beforehand. When it does, you may want to dive as there are unique photo opportunities, such as ancient statues and shipwrecked cannons beneath the river’s crystal clear waters. Here’s a pro tip: ensure you have a waterproof camera with you to capture some incredible underwater photos!

Make time to explore The Grand Reef

The Grand Reef is one of the best highlights of Discovery Cove. The underwater scenery and sea life here are stunning, to say the least. Upon entry, guests will find themselves in awe as they swim alongside several species of tropical fish and three types of majestic rays. Exploring the reef will reward guests with additional viewing tanks of reef sharks, balloon fish, and eels. Venturing to the Grand Reef’s bridges and walkways will also grant an incredible view and an opportunity for memorable photo ops. For an added family experience, a nursery pool nearby houses the younger rays, shellfish, and even shark pups!

This will be where guests will get the most out of their submersible camera as they’ll capture some of the best moments from their day. It isn’t everywhere that you can swim side-by-side with a massive Southern Ray or hundreds of schools of vibrant fish! The water is kept at a constant 72 to 77 degrees throughout the year, which can be cold for some guests, and the wetsuit will help acclimate to the temperature faster.

Make note of the times for animal meet and greets

In addition to all they offer, Discovery Cove allows visitors to see and learn about exotic and endangered creatures at their Conservation Cabanas. With two locations, an Island and Reef station, the resort’s experts will hold special animal encounters to educate guests about some of the park’s critter residents. They range from one of the birds from the aviary to mammals like sloths. The times can vary depending on the day, but guests can find this information via the Discovery Cove app.

This is one of the best ways for families to maximize their experience at the resort. During these times, guests can interact with the starring animal and ask the experts any questions that come to mind. During one of my last visits, my wife and I met one of their resident kinkajous and learned a lot about their lives and how they’re cared for.

Consider upgrades

It’s truly impressive to think about all the wonderful inclusions that come with your Discovery Cove admission. However, there are plenty of exciting opportunities to enhance your visit! Guests can extend the fun to the resort’s sister parks like SeaWorld or Aquatica, or they can do some amazing things right there on the property.

Offers such as the Signature Dolphin Swim package give guests the rare opportunity to partake in an interactive photo session with the resort’s dolphins. Anyone celebrating an occasion such as a birthday can have one of their trained dolphins swim up with a message on a celebration buoy for an additional fee.

Their Shark Swim allows the more adventurous guests to swim with several types of reef sharks and gain a better understanding of them via an informative video. The best part of this upgrade is that five percent of the proceeds benefit the Guy Harvey Ocean Foundation, which gives back to the beaches and oceans.

Possibly the most unique option, however, is the SeaVenture upgrade. Located in the Grand Reef, guests will go on a walking tour where they’ll see and feed some of its vibrant sea life in an awe-inspiring, up-close experience.

Guests who are more low-key but still want to indulge in some of the best also have great choices. Discovery Cove’s newest upgrade, The Flamingo Mingle, allows guests to take an early-morning stroll as part of the “flamboyance” of flamingos and assist with their feeding while they learn more about them. Similarly, they can also choose the Animal Trek upgrade, where they can partake in a private 30-minute tour behind the scenes to meet their birds and small mammals.

Guests can also expand their luxury offerings by renting a Day Bed or Cabana, or selecting a Premium Drink Package, which offers a full selection of signature, mixed and frozen cocktails.

Each of these ways is an incredible option. Wherever you land in the matter of maximizing your time, it’s sure to be the best day ever when you attend Discovery Cove.

This writer makes no secret of how much he loves this resort. Discovery Cove is a tropical oasis that’s seemingly secluded from the outside world. Discovery Cove allows their guests to feel like they’re on a blissful island where they can swim the day away with little care aside from what they wish to do next. This laissez faire-ness, I dare say, is one of the many reasons you may have found the perfect gift for anyone’s mother.

Still not convinced? Well, allow me to elaborate –

Discovery Cove is an all-inclusive experience

From the moment guests enter the property until they leave the resort, just about anything they’d require during their visit is provided at no additional cost. If you’re driving yourself, parking is included at Discovery Cove, which is always an appreciated bonus. Every guest admission includes the free use of either a wetsuit or vest (both of which are required during your visit), snorkel gear, animal-friendly sunscreen, towels, lockers, changing areas, and both indoor private and outdoor public shower facilities. The latter of which comes in handy as the park’s experts recommend showering prior to any animal interactions for their safety.

Also included during your day at the resort are both food and beverages of the adult and non-alcoholic varieties. Breakfast and lunch are served at Laguna Grill, where mom can indulge in such delights as freshly prepared eggs, french toast sticks, sandwiches, burgers, and desserts. Complimentary snacks, soft drinks, pizza, beer, and wine are also available at additional stands throughout the property.

Discovery Cove is a Hub of Memorable Moments

Of course, precious memories are among the best gifts you can give your mother, and Discovery Cove offers countless opportunities for them. Every inch of the property is picturesque and ripe with potential from sea to shore. On that note, you’ll want to make sure she has a submersible camera as there are ancient statues and shipwrecked cannons hidden within the depths of Wind-Away River’s crystal-clear waters. If guests don’t bring their own camera, don’t fret – several photographers throughout the property are standing ready to capture a cherished moment at the perfect spot.

Up on the resort’s sandy shores, the Conservation Cabana allows guests the opportunity to make a new friend of the endangered, exotic and avian variety. Here, they can meet and learn about several of the resort’s small mammals and birds during certain hours of the day. Guests also have the opportunity to feed and interact with the resort’s vibrantly feathered residents over at the Explorer’s Aviary.

My favorite spot to capture these memories is either at the entrance cove to the Wind-Away River or the Grand Reef. The latter is an excellent opportunity as guests are surrounded by hundreds of sea life. All around you are free-swimming, brilliantly-colored schools of tropical fish and various types of marvelous rays, so be sure to bring out your waterproof camera for those perfect pictures! The Grand Reef is also home to two of the park’s unique, purchasable upgrades that will give their guests an unforgettable experience.

Why not make her experience a bit extra?

Everything mentioned up to now is included with your Day Resort Package. That alone makes this a worthwhile gift! If you want to treat Mom to something even more amazing, Discovery Cove offers many enhancements to make anyone’s visit that much better. If you need a lead, we have a few suggestions here.

Their Signature Dolphin Swim Package is a classic bucket list option that offers guests the rare opportunity of an interactive photo session with the resort’s native dolphins. For an extra fee, Discovery Cove can have one of their trained dolphins swim up to Mom with a message on a celebration buoy wishing her a Happy Mother’s Day.

If mom is a thrill seeker, the Swim with the Sharks upgrade will be right up her alley. She’ll team with the park’s certified Aquarists to swim with over twenty sharks while gaining a better understanding of each species and their care at the resort. Adding to this already amazing upgrade, 5% of the proceeds are put towards the Guy Harvey Ocean Foundation, meaning mom gets a gift that gives back to the world.

Their SeaVenture add-on is honestly my favorite choice as it’s a one-of-a-kind experience. Guests descend to the floor of the Grand Reef for a one-of-a-kind walking tour where they’ll have up-close encounters with its sea life.

If yours is more of the mom who prefers a low-key experience, I’d also suggest Discovery Cove’s Premium Drink Package. This allows her to raise a glass of her choice of a full selection of mixed and frozen drinks to an incredible gift – and possibly a wonderful child.
