The post Hurricanes and your Orlando vacation: 4 things to know appeared first on Orlando Informer.
]]>Given the fact that we’re now in hurricane season, it’s a good idea to keep the following points in mind as the Central Florida theme and water parks start to brace for potential weather disruptions:
Your safety is the top priority of every theme park in Central Florida. Due to this, they all have similar severe-weather cancellation policies in place.
With that said, however, none of the cancellation policies include airline tickets, car rentals, or vacation insurance; you’ll need to check with those specific parties for their own policies.
Did you purchase from Orlando Informer? If you purchased your theme park tickets from Orlando Informer and your trip is impacted by a named storm, please contact us directly so that we may assist you.
Kindly note that we are only able to assist guests who purchased from Orlando Informer.
If a hurricane warning is issued by the National Hurricane Center for the Orlando area, or for your place of residence, within seven days of your scheduled arrival date, you may reschedule or cancel your vacation package and most room-only reservations (booked directly through Disney) without any cancellation fees. Select special events and dining experiences may not be eligible for a refund.
Call 407-939-5277 for assistance.
If you are not able to arrive at Orlando due to an active named storm impacting your travel, you’ll be able to reschedule your vacation or receive a complete refund. This policy is for Universal Orlando’s hotels only and does not include theme-park tickets – but, in many cases, these tickets can still be used at a later date.
Reservations must have been booked a minimum of seven days in advance and canceled before 6:00 pm the day prior to arrival.
For further assistance, call their Guest Contact Center team at 877-801-9720.
In the event a named tropical storm or hurricane approaches Orlando, Tampa, or your hometown, the parks will reschedule or refund any vacation package and/or individual park tickets booked through SeaWorld Vacations, Busch Gardens Vacations, DiscoveryCove.com, SeaWorld.com, Aquatica.com, BuschGardens.com, or the call center.
Call 407-545-5550.
Perhaps chalk this one up in the “obvious” category, but outdoor attractions at all of the theme parks will be closed in the event of inclement weather, while outdoor entertainment will be moved inside or canceled.
Indoor attractions, including the haunted houses at Universal’s Halloween Horror Nights, continue to operate during severe weather. The only exception is the occasional occurrence of a queue or house flooding.
Busch Gardens Tampa frequently closes due to severe weather, but it’s extremely rare for the Orlando theme parks to do so. With this being said, it can happen if they are directly threatened by a hurricane.
The most recent example of this was Hurricane Irma in 2017; all Disney World, Universal Orlando, SeaWorld, and Legoland parks closed early on September 9 and were completely closed on both September 10 and 11, with a few of those parks closing a few days earlier than that (and/or reopening a few days afterward). Just a year previously, Matthew’s presence in the area forced all of the theme parks to close early on October 6 and remained shuttered for all of the 7th. A similar situation happened with Hurricane Charley in August 2004, and Hurricane Floyd prompted the parks to open late in 1999. Floyd ended up not having a large impact on Orlando; Charley, however, brought 145 mph winds. It would become the sixth most-costly hurricane in the United States’s history, according to the Insurance Information Institute. Prior to Charley in 2004, the last time Orlando took a direct hit was Hurricane Donna in 1960.
All of the theme parks’ attractions in Central Florida are designed with the threat of a hurricane in mind. This means that, if the worse came to fruition and the parks did close due to a direct threat of a hurricane, it’s unlikely for there to be a large amount of structural damage – the parks would likely reopen shortly after this worst-case scenario (as we’ve already seen).
If a hurricane is bound for Orlando while you’re staying at one of Walt Disney World or Universal Orlando Resort’s hotels, you may be asked to take shelter in your room. Historically, the staff has done an extraordinary job at keeping guests calm and informed. They’ll ensure everybody is fed and will, likely, put extra entertainment in place. In emergency situations, guests may be asked to gather in a large, enclosed space with no windows.

We’ve found that these advertisements lead to a less-than-ideal experience for you. Like most sites, previously we were not able to assess every ad (and the advertiser behind them) you may see. Just as I wouldn’t recommend a company to a guest of my home without first checking it out, I don’t think that we should be sending readers of OrlandoInformer.com to third-party companies we aren’t familiar with.
Frequent OI visitors may have noticed this change a number of days ago. We’re already seeing terrific feedback – we’ve noticed a double-digit increase in the average amount of time a guest remains on our website and a substantial increase in the number of pages readers view. In an industry where most sites have chosen to place seven to 11 ads on articles with 100 to 300 words, we’re excited to offer in-depth content almost always over 600 words with zero advertisements. (And we’ll continue our longstanding practice of only publishing blog articles when there’s something to write about, saving the shorter blurbs for social-media posts.)
Removing ads isn’t the only action we’re taking to make sure you have a better experience when visiting Orlando Informer. At the beginning of August, we made the leap to an even better dedicated website server, which will ensure our site can load in a snap even when the biggest breaking news is published. In addition, we’re methodically combing through our almost-2,000 blog posts we’ve run over the past seven-and-a-half years to make certain that each article still provides value now. We’ll be updating or deleting posts that are out of date and don’t provide a comprehensive look at a moment of history. We expect this process to take a good amount of time, but we’re excited for the results.
We wouldn’t be able to make these changes without your incredible support. Whether this is your first time on Orlando Informer or you’ve been visiting the site for seven years, thank you.
The best way to support us is to simply stay connected – it’s free to you and helps us considerably. Here’s where you can find us, and what you can expect from each channel:
Thank you again, and we look forward to the next seven years.

]]>The post Carnival Graveyard announced for Halloween Horror Nights 2018 appeared first on Orlando Informer.
]]>Universal today revealed the fifth haunted house for this year’s Halloween Horror Nights.
Carnival Graveyard: Rust in Pieces is the combination of numerous carnivals and years of decay. Guests will be “trespassing” through this graveyard only to find themselves in the middle of bloody walls and abandoned rides used for torture. Carnies seeking revenge will be found throughout the original house.
The house joins the Halloween Horror Nights 2018 lineup in a time when urban exploring, especially of abandoned theme parks and carnivals, is at its height in culture.
Carnival Graveyard will join Stranger Things, Dead Exposure: Patient Zero, Trick ‘r Treat, and Slaughter Sinema at Universal Orlando’s Halloween Horror Nights, which runs for a record-breaking 34 select nights, from Friday, September 14 to Saturday, November 3.

]]>The post Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon to debut summer nighttime event appeared first on Orlando Informer.
]]>The celebration will feature Toy Story characters and is inspired by the Pixar short film “Partysaurus Rex,” which is part of the Toy Story Toons umbrella of shorts and which originally debuted in front of Finding Nemo back in 2012. Expect H2O Glow Nights to include “special lighting effects,” dance parties, and beach games – appropriate, since “Partysaurus” is all about Rex getting left in the bathroom and attempting to befriend the various bath toys there. As the cherry on top, all of Typhoon Lagoon’s attractions will be open during the event.
Tickets for Typhoon Lagoon’s first after-hours party will go on sale March 19 and will cost $55 for adults and $50 for children (ages three to nine), plus tax. Once on-sale, admission can be purchased by calling 407-939-1872.

]]>The post 9 breathtaking morning photos of Universal’s Volcano Bay appeared first on Orlando Informer.
]]>InstaMeets at Universal Orlando are always a blast. In the past, they’ve allowed us to give you a look at Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure after they close for the night and, even, Halloween Horror Nights houses, like last year’s American Horror Story and its original houses.
Minutes after taking this photo, guests diverged onto Waturi Beach to claim their base for the day’s activities. Until then, this picture gives a look at the serenity and uniformity of the beach.
For guests who don’t opt for premium seating or a private cabana on Waturi Beach, spots near umbrellas are a great alternative. This picture was taken between two umbrellas found on the beach and looking towards the crest of Krakatau.
Okay – admittedly, this one’s not as breathtaking as the other eight pictures. However, we couldn’t resist including this picture of a lizard trying to live his best life and soak up some rays of sun prior to the water theme park opening for the day.
The Reef is one of the leisure pools found at Volcano Bay. While it may not be as large or popular as the wave pool found at Waturi Beach, it still is home to epic views (including watching guests plummet from Ko’okiri Body Plunge) and multiple TapTu Play points.
Speaking of Ko’okiri Body Plunge, this close-up shot of the ride’s entrance sign features the slide itself in the distant background (it’s the red tube right at the top balcony of the Krakatau volcano). The signs around Volcano Bay are some of our favorite details in the park.
These gators stand guard at some of the bridges at Volcano Bay, while Kopiko Wai Winding River – well – winds below.
Runamukka Reef is one of the two (connected) kids’ areas at the water park. Similar to Camp Jurassic, one of the children’s play areas found at Universal’s Islands of Adventure, it’s home to surprising details and interactivity.
If you’re looking to make your visit to Volcano Bay special, we recommend considering upgrading to a private cabana. You can learn more in our complete guide to private cabanas at Volcano Bay.
TeAwa the Fearless River is one of our favorite ways to pass the time while waiting to hop on the next attraction. You’ll speed past and under Krakatau Aqua Coaster and more!
Ready to start planning your visit to Universal’s Volcano Bay? You can learn everything you need to know in our complete guide and history to the park!

]]>The post Volcano Bay removes almost 30 food choices appeared first on Orlando Informer.
]]>When it opened in May, Volcano Bay featured far superior food offerings when compared to Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure. This change begins to make the offerings more comparable to the other parks.
Items that were removed include a variety of tacos, Poke Poke Bowls, a large amount of specialty burgers, most barbecue options, glazed chicken, ribs, mahi sandwiches, and more. Hot dogs, corn dogs, loaded nachos, and a bacon cheeseburger have been added to fill the void of these 28 removals.
More healthy choices, such as the variety of salads and wraps, seem to be the area of the offerings least modified. Volcano Bay’s six salad options, sushi, turkey wrap, veggie wrap, and more continue to be served.
It’s currently unclear if the menu for private cabanas has changed as well. The menu featured multiple exclusive options.
As for why the decision was made, it is likely that a smaller menu will allow for more efficient service and help guests choose what to order faster. This should keep lines at all food venues as short as possible.
You can find a full list of what has been removed and added to each restaurant below. Visit Orlando Informer’s guide to Volcano Bay for everything you need to know before you visit.

Also on April 6, Race Through New York Starring Jimmy Fallon will officially open at Universal Studios Florida.
The commercial mentions a lip sync battle with Shaquille O’Neal. Additionally, it is likely that Vin Diesel will not only promote the next Fast & Furious movie, but also the Fast & Furious: Supercharged ride coming to Universal Studios Florida next year.
Tickets to the taping were distributed for free, with availability dwindling within minutes. There has been no official information released as to what stars will be joining Fallon until now. It’s likely that we will hear about more celebrities in the coming days.

]]>The post TECHNICAL REHEARSALS: Race Through New York Starring Jimmy Fallon appeared first on Orlando Informer.
]]>A soft opening, also referred to as a technical rehearsal, is an opportunity for guests to experience an attraction or show prior to its opening date. Some effects may be missing or not fully operational and the attraction may close or open at any time. The ride officially opens on April 6.
Virtual queue kiosks have been set up, but so far they have not been utilized. On its first day of testing, guests were able to walk directly into the first (of two) rooms where they wait to ride.
Upon entering the ride, guests are handed a plastic colored card. The color you receive represents which group you are a part of. When it’s time for a group of guests to move upstairs, the room is lit with the color. This carries on for the second room; when your color is shown, it’s your time to ride.
The first room acts as a museum of sorts, showing you memories and items from the past and current hosts of The Tonight show on NBC. The room is open, and while it is loud, it is equally beautiful.
After climbing a gorgeous staircase, guests find themselves in the second room. This room is even more interesting than the first. Guests have plush chairs to relax in while waiting to ride. There are large tablets with Tonight Show-themed games on them.
The best part of the second room (and possibly the entire ride) is the large stage, which features performances from the Ragtime Gals and Hashtag the Panda. The Ragtime Girls know a plethora of songs and each performance varies. This was easily the highlight of Race Through New York’s first day and a crowd-pleaser.
After much anticipation, guests then enter a very short line to retrieve their 3D glasses (dubbed Racing Goggles) and hear a short safety rap (not a typo). Then it’s on to the main ride, which seats 72 guests per ride. There are several long rows of guests. The ride itself is very similar to Depsicable Me: Minion Mayhem, except instead of separate ride vehicles, it is all one large vehicle.
The ride’s motion profile, for now, is very gentle. Sources familiar with the matter tell us it may be amped up prior to the ride’s opening. The ride itself is very funny. Look for a full review once it opens on April 6.
Orlando Informer will have continuing coverage of Race Through New York Starring Jimmy Fallon over the coming month. Check out our ride page for more pictures and information. ]]>Universal Orlando has begun testing “photo validation technology” at select attractions for guests with unlimited Universal Express from an on-site hotel, Orlando Informer has learned.
The test began today at Cat in the Hat. Instead of guests having to present their express pass ticket to a team member, facial recognition software tells the team member if they have express or not.
Since on-site hotel guests are already required to have their photo on their express ticket, no extra steps are required by the guest. Guests are able to opt out of this test by visiting guest services.
Dependent on how this test performs, expect to see it expand to other attractions and eventually possibly every attraction. If it works as intended, it will provide an added convenience for guests and expedite entry into express lines.

The top story on Orlando Informer in 2016 may be a surprise for those not paying close attention. News of Toothsome Chocolate Emporium & Savory Feast Kitchen in March created a tornado of excitement. Our post detailing the initial announcement was shared almost 25,000 times. Our coverage leading to the opening of the restaurant reached over 2 million people on our Facebook alone.
We closely monitored the construction, providing updates along the way. When the restaurant soft opened in late August, we spent almost 9 hours over the first three days at the Emporium. We captured hundreds of pictures and sampled almost every offering on the menu. At the end of the first week, we chronicled the good and the not so good moments of the restaurant.
The months of coverage all led up the epic quest to try every Toothsome milkshake in one sitting:
Our next most popular story in 2016 revolved around Universal surveying different possibilities for future holiday offerings. Specifically, the option of a Harry Potter Yule Ball had over a million people talking and almost 8,000 people sharing the initial rumor.
And while Universal offered its normal holiday activities this year, who knows what is being conjured up for 2017…?
In a very surprising, albeit brief, test, Universal allowed all guests over 56″ in height on Pteranodon Flyers for the last hour of operation each day in the middle of March. Normally, guests over 56″ would need to be accompanied by a child between the height of 36″-56″. The news spread rapidly, especially among annual passholders, being shared over 7,000 times.
As quickly as the test began, it ended a few weeks later at the end of March.
The first half of 2016 was filled with details about the new ride opening at Universal’s Islands of Adventure, Skull Island: Reign of Kong. With the first look of Skull Island in February receiving 4,800 shares, the ride was heavily anticipated. Later in March, the ride vehicles for the colossal ride were released. Finally in May, Universal revealed Kong himself.
Our fifth most popular story of 2016 was published yesterday. (Yes, it’s that exciting!) Sources and evidence all points to The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Hogsmeade receiving a nighttime show in the first half of 2017.
You can see a glimpse of what the show may look like, along with other juicy details in our original story.
Universal didn’t stop at one new ride this summer. The Incredible Hulk Coaster roared back to life with new ride vehicles. The fan favorite returned just as popular as when it closed, getting rave reviews.
Race Through New York Starring Jimmy Fallon details were revealed and shared over 3,000 times. Opening in Spring 2017, guests will be able to send personalized thank you notes and meet and dance with Hashtag the Panda. (And that’s all before you even get on the ride!)
Providing a first look and later releasing a second look, Volcano Bay news took the internet by storm. Universal’s water theme park was revealed to have queueless ride technology, interactivity, a staple aqua coaster, and more. Tickets are on sale now and the park opens by June 1.
Last but certainly not least, Universal Studios Japan‘s Super Nintendo World gave us a inside look at what could be coming to Universal Orlando in the years to come.
2016 was a lot of fun, but 2017 should be even better! Make sure you don’t miss any of the big stories of the new year by following us on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and joining our Facebook group and mailing list!

The expansion to Universal Studios Japan is expected to cost over 50 billion Yen (roughly $433,016,500). For comparison, The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Hogsmeade at Universal Orlando’s Islands of Adventure is believed to have cost roughly $200 million. Diagon Alley at the neighboring Universal Studios Florida is believed to have a cost of around $256 million. To build this vast area, Universal Creative will use part of the park’s parking lot and undeveloped land.
Featured in Super Nintendo World will be characters and themes from the “Super Mario” series along with other popular Nintendo franchises.
