Shrek 4D at Universal Studios Florida will close on January 10, 2022 after an 18-year career, during which it welcomed millions of visitors. Shrek’s Ye Olde Souvenir Shoppe will also close, but have no fear – Donkey will continue to dish out digs from his wall even in the attraction’s absence.

As Universal continues to add an ever-bigger selection of new experiences for guests to encounter all across its resort, it’s had to shutter an ever-larger amount of older attractions that have since passed their prime: Terminator 2 3D: Battle across Time, Cinematic Spectacular, and Dragon Challenge, just to name a few of the more recent ones. Now, it’s time to add one more entry to the list, as the company has today announced that Shrek 4D will be joining its former brethren in the theme-park sky.

That the 4D movie is coming to an end should be no surprise to anyone, as it is older, remains only partially culturally-relevant, and is rather below the theming standards set by The Wizarding World of Harry Potter, which has become the de facto baseline for any new undertaking at Universal Orlando Resort. (In fact, when T2 3D’s termination was announced at the end of 2017, many a fan’s response was simply, “They’re closing that before Shrek 4D?” It’ll likely remain the most-asked question even now.) And adding to the film’s impending sense of doom was the fact that its sister attraction over in Universal Studios Hollywood was closed down in the summer of 2017 in order to make room for a new DreamWorks Animation-themed experience.

But even with all these detractions, Shrek 4D still has its own list of accomplishments, as well. Taking lessons it learned from Terminator 2 3D (ironically enough), Universal recruited the original cast from the source material and opted to create an experience that actually extended its story instead of simply rehashed it (sorry, Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey – for all the wonder and joy you manage to consistently conjure, you’ve been caught red-handed in this department). Debuting just one year before Shrek 2 hit theaters in 2004, the attraction serves as a sequel to the original 2001 film, showing how Lord Farquaad’s ghost lingers on to seek revenge against Shrek and Fiona; when he’s finally dispatched for good, it paves the way for the couple to get married, thereby setting the stage for the sequel. (While this narrative may not seem like much, it’s easily one of the strongest continuations of an originating mythology seen in the themed world.)

Shrek 4D at Universal Studios Florida
Shrek 4D at Universal Studios Florida

Adding to this is Shrek 4D’s worldwide popularity. Given the mammoth success of the overarching Shrek property (it still ranks as the second-most-successful cinematic animation franchise), Universal worked quickly to get the 4D experience into every one of its four theme-park locations around the world, starting with Hollywood in May 2003, moving on to Florida and Japan just a month later, and ending in Singapore in 2010 (which was just two years after the park itself opened and was alongside the release of Shrek Forever After, the fourth movie). It has since proven to be one of the more long-lived attractions Universal has in its global portfolio – even after the 17-year-old Orlando version is closed down, it’ll still be survived by its overseas counterparts, especially at Universal Studios Singapore, where it anchors an entire land devoted to the big green ogre called Far Far Away. And given DreamWorks Animation’s interest in monetizing its various properties as much as possible, the company even worked out an agreement to bring Shrek 4D to two non-Universal-owned parks: Australia’s Warner Bros. Movie World (where it enjoyed a five-year stint, from 2005 to 2010) and Germany’s Movie Park (2008 to 2011).

But worry not, Shrek fans – Shrek 4D will live on in different media, as the 3D film (minus all the in-the-theater effects, of course) has already seen release as a special feature on the first Shrek DVD, as a streaming episode in Netflix’s DreamWorks Spooky Stories collection, as a television special on Nickelodeon (look for recorded copies from 2007), and, even, as a comic book in a Dark Horse Comics miniseries from 2003. What’s more, with Universal’s purchase of DreamWorks Animation in April 2016, the two studios are already plotting how to rejuvenate the franchise – yes, even though four movies, a spinoff (that would be 2011’s Puss in Boots), various television excursions, a Broadway musical(!), and scores of other themed experiences around the world (highlighted by Merlin Entertainments’s Shrek’s Adventure in London) are already all on-hand, Shrek 5 is currently in some stage of development, with a projected release date sometime over the next few years and a newly-assigned mission to “reinvent” the property for a potential second round of franchise developments.

2020 was always meant to be something of an unusual year for Halloween Horror Nights, given that it marked the hallowed event’s 30th anniversary, but it was never supposed to be as strange as it turned out to be.

Thanks to the coronavirus pandemic, which disrupted the entire theme-park industry around the world for a full year (along with most other businesses, as well, of course), Universal Orlando Resort’s chief seasonal celebration was cut entirely and replaced by a smaller, daytime, more family-friendly event, replete with trick-or-treating and a scarecrow treasure trail. Additionally, by the time Halloween weekend came and went, three of the 10 proposed haunted houses for that year ended up being opened on at least a limited basis: Universal Monsters: The Bride of Frankenstein Lives, Revenge of the Tooth Fairy, and Beetlejuice.

Even though Horror Nights – with that grand 30th anniversary celebration – is back on for 2021, it, too, continues to find itself being impacted by the pandemic, starting with its so-called announcement season. While the traditional start month of March was still honored – that’s when we got the Beetlejuice 2021 announcement – what we’re seeing now is the advent of an all-hands-on-deck approach, revealing everything else in one fell swoop. (All of which isn’t to mention the little announcement that dropped last October, for Puppet Theatre: Captive Audience, making it the earliest ever.)

Yes, that’s right – nearly all of the Halloween Horror Nights 2021 houses have been unveiled in a veritable tsunami of information (and awesomeness). The various attached film and television franchises range from traditional horror to more general entertainment, providing a good variety and replicating the approach that Universal has fine-tuned over the past few HHN outings, when it introduced such properties as Stranger Things and Ghostbusters into the mix.

It’s too much to properly dissect in just this article, though, so we’ve decided to unpack them all in a whole series of posts (yes, even the already-revealed ones).

How do you celebrate the 30th anniversary of Halloween Horror Nights? Easy – you cook up a solid-sounding original entry dominated by the Pumpkin Lord. This house will take you through terrifying terrains such as a chilling cemetery and a haunted forest, where giant pumpkins – rooted in pure evil – are determined to follow their twisted tradition and sacrifice you to their gourd overlord.

Pumpkins, of course, have long been an icon for Halloween, generally, but they’ve also had a longstanding tradition at Horror Nights, specifically; so-called Pumpkin Heads (scareactors with, well, pumpkins for heads) have been popping up at a whole slew of haunts and scare zones since 2001, and, more recently, we’ve seen them invade the event’s exclusive food offerings (last event’s Pumpkin Patch Mini Doughnuts, inspired by Stranger Things) and, even, a headlining zone (2018’s mesmerizing Twisted Tradition, which, in turn, was inspired by the previous year’s Trick ‘r Treat theme). Given all this, it’s no surprise at all to see today’s announcement.

The Wicked Growth: Realm of the Pumpkin will join BeetlejuiceThe Haunting of Hill House, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, and Universal Monsters: Bride of Frankenstein Lives, HHN Icons: Captured, and more at Universal Orlando’s Halloween Horror Nights, which runs for a record-breaking 42 select nights, from Friday, September 3 to Saturday, October 31.

In keeping with the rest of this year’s Halloween Horror Nights “announcement season,” Universal has decided to go ahead and pull the trigger on its two live shows, revealing the fuller lineup all at once.

Here’s everything you need to know:

Halloween Nightmare Fuel

Situated in the Fear Factor Live stadium (which was the home of the Academy of Villains dance troupe from 2017 to 2019 and to Bill & Ted’s Excellent Halloween Adventure for some 25 years before that), this production delves deeply into Horror Nights’ mythology.

Details released so far on this show are limited, but Universal has promised there will be “nocturnal creatures, aerialists of the night, and frightful fire performers” featuring rock, metal, and electronica music.

Marathon of Mayhem: Carnage Factory

The addition of a lagoon show at 2019’s HHN, utilizing the technology and infrastructure of Universal Orlando’s Cinematic Celebration, was a major announcement – and a head-turning experience, instantly making it a fan-favorite element of the long-running event. (No, this wasn’t the first time that Universal made such a move – you can read all about the lagoon’s Halloween Horror Nights history here – but it was the first to be so dramatically employed, in both conception and execution.) It comes as no surprise, then, that the company is making the show a repeat occurrence for 2020.

Just as with the previous Halloween: Marathon of Mayhem, it’s possible you’ll see the intellectual properties that make up the new haunted-house roster be brought to life over the waters of Universal Studios Florida: The Haunting of Hill House, Beetlejuice, the Universal Monsters, and The Texas Chain Saw Massacre. It looks to be yet another “larger-than-life mixtape” that will make it to the top of guests’ Horror Nights lists.

This roster of live shows will join Beetlejuice and Puppet Theatre: Captive Audience at Universal Orlando’s Halloween Horror Nights, which runs for a record-breaking 42 select nights, from Friday, September 3 to Saturday, October 31.

SCarey: Horror in the Heartland announced for Halloween Horror Nights 2021 https://orlandoinformer.com/blog/scarey-horror-in-the-heartland-halloween-horror-nights-2021/ Thu, 12 Aug 2021 14:19:39 +0000 https://orlandoinformer.com/?p=122975 Welcome to sCarey, Ohio, where the horror in the Heartland resides! It's the latest original house for HHN 2021.

The post SCarey: Horror in the Heartland announced for Halloween Horror Nights 2021 appeared first on Orlando Informer.

How do you celebrate the 30th anniversary of Halloween Horror Nights? Easy – you do an anniversary house (yes, another one).

As the name might (kind of) suggest, SCarey: Horror in the Heartland will be a celebration of the event for its landmark 30th year, specifically focusing on Carey, Ohio, the real-life town that has served as the fictional basis for much of Horror Nights’s mythology. Over the course of the past 12 years (and, through retconning, for six years even before that), some two dozen mazes and scare zones have been set in – or have otherwise involved – the now-infamous location, and SCarey looks to be something of a greatest-hits encapsulation of most of them. (Here’s to hoping that the 2018 entries of Slaughter Sinema, a haunt, and Twisted Tradition, a zone, pop up!)

On June 12, park guests began to notice the “Welcome to SCarey: Horror in the Heartland” house facade being put up near Men in Black: Alien Attack! Two days later, the Halloween Horror Nights Twitter account seemed to make light of the situation with a tweet of rushing water that said “its [sic] just a little leak.” At any rate, we are happy to share now that, yes, this is an official house, and we hope you’re as excited about it as we are!

A classic in HHN lore, Carey is a real village in Ohio (about 90 minutes north of Columbus). As the story goes, Carey was the hometown of one of the Art & Design team members on the original (or at least very early) Halloween Horror Nights team. The designers chose its rural location and small-town feel to inspire some of the creepier settings of their ideas, in theory focusing a type of “origin” story that would build on itself over time, and so it has. Through the years, a number of HHN houses or scare zones have been set in this sleepy little haunt, which makes its inclusion for this diamond anniversary year both fitting and exciting.

Scarey: Horror in the Heartland will join BeetlejuiceThe Haunting of Hill House, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, Universal Monsters: Bride of Frankenstein Lives, and HHN Icons: Captured at Universal Orlando’s Halloween Horror Nights, which runs for a record-breaking 42 select nights, from Friday, September 3 to Saturday, October 31.

Case Files Unearthed: Legendary Truth announced for Halloween Horror Nights 2021 https://orlandoinformer.com/blog/legendary-truth-halloween-horror-nights-2021/ Thu, 12 Aug 2021 14:18:50 +0000 https://orlandoinformer.com/?p=132966 After a lengthy absence, the fan-favorite Legendary Truth is returning to Universal's premier Halloween event!

The post Case Files Unearthed: Legendary Truth announced for Halloween Horror Nights 2021 appeared first on Orlando Informer.

]]>
The 30th anniversary year of Halloween Horror Nights has provided Universal’s designers with ample opportunity to reference – and celebrate – the event’s hallowed past, and the latest original haunted house to be announced is by no means an exception.

Follow the trail of a private eye as an investigation into the supernatural leads you into a dark world of ghouls and terrifying creatures.

Have you ever wondered how Halloween Horror Nights came to be? Not the marketing and design “came to be” answer – but the real story? Good news is you don’t have to wait much longer to find out. Bad news is the truth might be stranger than fiction.

Boris Shuster. Sound familiar? Die-hard Universal Studios Florida fans will recognize the name from a window display in the New York section of the park. Shuster entered the Horror Nights mythology in 2008, when he fought rogue psychiatrist Bloody Mary and survived. He is the founder of Legendary Truth: The Collective, an organization that studies the evil that perpetuates Halloween Horror Nights. It seems that Shuster has more to do with the now-popular event than he has admitted thus far, and this year we find out just how much he really knows.

Perhaps the most intriguing element of this haunt is its tie-in to Legendary Truth, a name that has been popping up at Horror Nights off and on over the past 13 years – and one that has become ever more intertwined with the event’s rich mythology. Legendary is an organization that is dedicated to researching all things paranormal, which means, of course, that it’s constantly in pursuit of HHN’s various goings-on, especially at the hands of its icons, those mystical (or, simply, deranged) beings that have come to be the protagonist of one event year or another. (Much to the chagrin of the long-term die-hard fans, these icons have become far less prevalent over the past decade, thanks to the ever-increasing success and top billing of the various intellectual properties that Universal hosts, such as The Walking Dead or Stranger Things.)

The impetus for this fan-favorite group came from a fairly surprising source: in 2005, a small, Easter egg-esque game was tucked away on Halloween Horror Nights’ website, helping to increase fan interaction and paying off in a pretty memorable way – a special, Halloween-night meet-‘n-greet with the event’s creators in Universal Studios Florida. The warm reception caused the company to expand upon the concept in fits and starts over the next several years, creating Legendary Truth in 2008 to help corral the overall experience and weave it into the mythos. (There was also advancement in the games’ sophistication, accruing both online and in-park components and utilizing RFID technology in order to allow a certain level of interactivity with various HHN elements, including the detection of “ghosts” at the theme park.)

The highlight of this eight-year experimentation was some pretty monumental physical – and, sometimes, virtual-reality – encounters. In 2010, just two short years after the organization’s introduction, an entire maze was devoted to the subject; called Legendary Truth: The Wyandot Estate, it had guests explore one of the most haunted mansions in the world, where some spirit seekers were attempting to extract the many ghosts trapped there using a specialized machine they had created just for the occasion. (Naturally, the estate was located in Carey, Ohio, the setting of many HHN experiences over the decades – especially this upcoming anniversary year.)

Though a physical house was never repeated, Legendary Truth increasingly found itself probing the boundaries of the virtual for Universal, either directly or obliquely. In 2015, the scavenger-hunt game culminated in a limited-run VR haunt, in which the obligatory goggles were issued as “safety equipment” for those test subjects that were going to enter a dangerous portal, which deposited them in – you guessed it – another creepy mansion riddled with puzzles to solve and infested with spectral invaders to evade. This, in turn, led to the first – and only, as it turns out – implementation of a premium haunted house at Horror Nights the following year: The Repository, which combined real-world environments and actors with virtual-reality elements. (The premise had guests joining a team of investigators and exploring a “centuries-old secret warehouse where mysterious artifacts have been collected and stored for hundreds of years.”)

Both Legendary Truth and upcharge mazes have been missing from the event ever since, making this year’s Case Files Unearthed: Legendary Truth a welcome addition – and, assuredly, one that will build upon the Halloween Horror Nights mythos in some fun (and scary) ways.

Legendary Truth house will join Beetlejuice, Haunting of Hill House, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, Universal Monsters: Bride of Frankenstein Lives, and HHN Icons: Captured at Universal Orlando’s Halloween Horror Nights, which runs for a record-breaking 42 select nights, from Friday, September 3 to Saturday, October 31.

The post Revenge of the Tooth Fairy announced for Halloween Horror Nights 2021 appeared first on Orlando Informer.

]]>
First, it was Beetlejuice. Then came Universal Monsters: The Bride of Frankenstein Lives. Now, it’s the return of yet another haunted house from 2020’s limited daytime showing: Revenge of the Tooth Fairy.

The scariest of the three mazes from last year, Tooth Fairy relied mainly on traditional jumpscares, but did so in a setting that was as creative as it was creepy: an old manor that had been overtaken by “yellow-clawed fiends” – better known as Tooth Fairies – who extract teeth by force from those who inexplicably aren’t willing to hand them over to the creatures. A storybook-esque narrative frames the whole experience, using both voiceover from a disembodied narrator and verses written out on the stately walls, which makes the proceedings all the more gruesome and chilling. Which isn’t to imply that the proceedings weren’t disturbing to begin with – these depictions of gore can best be summed up as “dental torture,” which is precisely what we did in our review from last year. It’s this interplay of story and scares that helped make this haunt the favorite of the Orlando Informer team in 2020, and we’re sure it’ll also help Tooth Fairy anchor the whole haunted-house roster for 2021.

Need a refresher on what Universal’s full description of Revenge of the Tooth Fairy is? No problem:

The innocent traditions of the tooth fairy hide a darker ritual. All children must give up their baby teeth to the goblin-esque tooth fairies or pay a gruesome price. Step into an old manor that has been overrun by yellow-clawed fiends who extract teeth by force. It’s an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth.

Revenge of the Tooth Fairy will join BeetlejuiceThe Haunting of Hill House, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, Universal Monsters: Bride of Frankenstein Lives, and HHN Icons: Captured at Universal Orlando’s Halloween Horror Nights, which runs for a record-breaking 42 select nights, from Friday, September 3 to Saturday, October 31.

It’s been an unusual season for Halloween Horror Nights so far this year, to put it mildly, with the continued fallout from the COVID-19 pandemic disrupting what would have traditionally been the event’s “announcement season.” But, hey, we’re still getting an HHN outing this year, unlike last, and having all of the scare zones be revealed all at once isn’t actually anything new – it’s been the standard operating procedure for at least the past few years.

So, what can we expect for the grand 30th celebration of Horror Nights? Five zones total, with three falling in the intellectual-property camp and the other two being original entries. Here’s everything to know:

30 Years 30 Fears (Avenue of the Stars, Production Central) – this little scare zone tends to operate more as a photo-op than an area filled with frights, mostly due to its location right at the front of Universal Studios Florida, and it seems like 2021 will be no different. But the theming for this year definitely sounds promising, celebrating the big anniversary; look for lots of candles and a big neon Halloween Horror Nights sign to mark the occasion.

Gorewood Forest (Central Park) – in another big reference to HHN’s past mythology, the Terra Queen is returning from her inaugural 2005 showing (just as the mythology foretold she would, 15 years later!). The land of Terra Cruentus is returning, as is the continuous Rituale de Blud, which the queen presides over in order to keep up the harvest of the sweet blood berries.

Crypt TV (San Francisco) – if you’re not familiar with Crypt TV, you now will be. Officially launched in April 2015, and with Eli Roth as a co-founder and Jason Blum as a backer, the company produces short horror videos, primarily for mobile devices, with the goal of creating its own Monsters Universe. Now, guests will be able to make their way past these scary denizens on the streets of the San Francisco backlot.

Seek and Destroy (New York) – The Controller (an alien overlord) is in search of a fuel source – conveniently, he can make fuel from humans. Nowhere is safe, and you’d better move!

Lights, Camera, Hacktion: Eddie’s Revenge (Hollywood) – a studio is in the process of filming a movie about Halloween Horror Nights. On the hot set, HHN Icon Eddie Schmidt and his chainsaw deliver a sequel to the 2009 scare zone of the same name and crash the production. In the process, he brings with him other HHN characters to wreak havoc and chaos.

This roster of scare zones will join BeetlejuiceThe Haunting of Hill House, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, and Universal Monsters: Bride of Frankenstein Lives! at Universal Orlando’s Halloween Horror Nights, which runs for a record-breaking 42 select nights, from Friday, September 3 to Saturday, October 31.

Like many in the traveling public, I fall into the category of the obese. Despite the label, I’m a very healthy guy (per my family’s doctor) who absolutely loves the Orlando theme parks, including Universal Orlando Resort.

Unfortunately, not all attractions are equally accessible to all body types. If you consider yourself a larger person, plus size, curvy, or even just big-boned, there are some factors you’ll want to consider as you plan the rides you’re going to tackle at Universal. (Keep in mind that my advice is written for guests who are a little larger – if you have any medical issue, don’t follow my advice and instead contact your doctor or Universal directly.)

I imagine the first thing that goes through many people’s minds when reading this is, “Why not just lose weight?” Obviously, that is an argument that larger people have to deal with all the time. For many of us, life is a constant struggle with weight, and it can be very difficult to drop the pounds. A lot of larger people have various genetic issues that make it nearly impossible to slim down, yet they can still be in strong health and have a desire to enjoy the parks as I do. Furthermore, “just losing weight” doesn’t apply when you fly many miles – and spend thousands of dollars – to get to Universal, only to find out that you won’t fit on Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey. As you might imagine, this experience is terribly upsetting.

The key to avoiding this — other than dropping a few pounds in the months leading up to your trip, if you’re able to — is knowing in advance which attractions may give you an issue.

Potential problem attractions at the theme parks

I currently weigh about 300 pounds and stand at six feet tall, with most of my excess weight in the belly. After many trips to both Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure, I know the rides that give a large person like myself the most issues:

Universal Studios Florida

Islands of Adventure

The vast majority of the time, the problem concerns the restraint system. Let’s take a look at this issue in detail, shall we?

Testing the test seats

Located near the attraction entrance, each of Universal’s thrill rides has a mock-up of the seats and restraints used in the ride vehicle. Many people mistake these test seats for a photo opportunity and will take pictures or simply sit in them for a while, but they do have a purpose.

If you’re larger, you can avoid a lot of potential embarrassment and anger further down the line by using these test seats to see if you can buckle or latch them. Keep in mind there are no “weight restrictions” on any of Universal’s theme-park attractions; instead, it comes down to how your unique body dimensions fit inside each ride’s restraint system. Two people may weigh the same, but one will fit and the other will not — which is why the test seats are so important.

The Incredible Hulk Coaster

The test seats outside of The Incredible Hulk Coaster offer an example of the roller coaster’s specially modified seats that have two buckles instead of just the one. In the photo below, the seat with the red straps is the modified option:

The Incredible Hulk Coaster test seats

There are three outcomes that can arise from your spin in the modified test seat:

 1. If you can fit very comfortably, with room to spare, you may be small enough to use the regular seats and sit wherever you like on Hulk.
 2. If you can buckle the test seat’s straps easily, you should be able to ride in the modified seats with no problem.
 3. If you fit, but just barely, you’ll need the help of another party member. Make sure you get seated first and have your companion push the restraint down enough until you can get it buckled. If it’s too painful, you’ll need to forego riding.

Here’s why this last point is so important: if you’re riding alone and can’t get the restraint on, you’ll be forced to ask an attendant to help. Sometimes, the team member will step up, give it a hard, gradual push, and get it successfully buckled. Other times, the employee will refuse — whether it be due to a lack of strength, or to simply err on the side of caution — and will ask you to leave the ride vehicle. If you bring your own back-up, you won’t have to take that gamble.

In case you need to take advantage of them, the specially modified seats are located in rows one, four, five, and eight. Although their exact positioning in each row is different – for example, it’s the second seat in row one, but the third seat in row four – you can easily identify them because their restraints have red straps and two buckles instead of one.

Dudley Do-Right’s Ripsaw Falls

If you’re near my size, I can gladly report that Dudley Do-Right’s Ripsaw Falls (and, for that matter, Revenge of the Mummy) will most likely accommodate you — but there can be some challenges.

Dudley Do-Right's Ripsaw Falls test seat
Test seats for Dudley Do-Right’s Ripsaw Falls

The Ripsaw Falls log vehicle fits up to five people in single-file accommodations, so it’s usually easy to get in. The problem occurs when you try to get out. The constant deluge of water makes the ride vehicle floors very slippery; when you attempt to exit the vehicle, you may have great difficulty, as I do, because the opening can be very tight for a large person, and it’s almost impossible to get your feet under your body to lift with your legs. If this occurs, you’re almost certainly going to need some help to lift yourself out. This can be a little embarrassing, so be sure to coordinate with that all-important party member of yours.

Revenge of the Mummy

The ride vehicle for Revenge of the Mummy fits me fine, but there’s a trick to it.

For the most part, I have little difficulty with this ride, as it features a mere lap restraint. However, the attendants will insist that the lap bar come far enough down that a light on the side of the vehicle shines. If you’re already seated, you may not have enough leverage to pull the bar down far enough to activate that light, and because of the way this ride is oriented, the team members will not be able to help you push.

But here’s my trick: Mummy’s ride vehicle seats four people in rows of four, with slightly more “leg room” (which can be Universal code-speak for “large guest room”) in the back row. Ask for that back row, suck in your gut as you sit down – quickly pulling the bar into place – and then exhale. This usually works very well, but be advised that this may be too tight for some riders (in which case you can just ask to exit).

Harry Potter and the Escape from Gringotts

This one seems to be the trickiest of them all. Since Harry Potter and the Escape from Gringotts‘s ride vehicle is extremely similar to Revenge of the Mummy’s, you’d assume that everyone who can fit on the latter will also be able to ride the former — this, unfortunately, isn’t always the case.

The Gringotts vehicle employs an additional shin guard, which seems to be what causes most of the problems (not just for larger guests, but also for those who are tall, regardless of their weight). Yes, that’s right – this one element might prevent you from riding, even if you can conquer all the other attractions on this list with minimal difficulty.

Fortunately, there are three rows per ride vehicle, with each subsequent row providing more and more leg room, so if you can’t fit into the front one, you’ll have some options. Unfortunately, there are no modified seats whatsoever, which means it’s the last row or bust.

Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey & Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit

Unfortunately, these two rides represent an insurmountable challenge at my current weight, and both are notorious for giving larger guests a hard time. I’ve slimmed down 30 pounds in an attempt to ride them, plateaued at 300 pounds, and still have no chance in the foreseeable future — mostly thanks to their (newer) restraint systems, which don’t use any noticeable ratcheting to close around their occupants.

I strongly advise you to check the test seats to make sure you fit before riding either attraction! There are few things worse than waiting an hour in line only to find out that you don’t fit, and then taking the embarrassing walk of shame to the exit as everyone looks at you. Once seated in the test seats, pull in the restraint (or have your companion push) until the three lights on the side turn green — only then will you be allowed to ride.

It’s important to note that shrubs have recently been added around the Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit test seats for additional privacy.

Need some help fitting better in Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey? This little trick might work for you: first, put your bottom as far back in the seat as possible before leaning backward, then pull down on the harness — this seems to allow it to click into place more easily. And if you’re having problems with Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit, remember that it has specially modified seats available in rows one and four.

A note about Forbidden Journey: when it first opened, this attraction was notorious for being nearly impossible for anyone over 220 pounds to ride. There were several reports in the media that made Universal look aloof at the time, causing the company some grief. As a result, Universal finally responded (nearly a year later) with modified seats that could accommodate some larger guests. Unfortunately, even with these changes, the ride simply won’t take guests with predominantly large chests. The only way to know for sure, again, is to try the test seats — if you can get the light to turn amber, you should be able to ride using one of the two outside seats in the ride vehicle.

Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure

Unfortunately, one of the newer additions to Islands of Adventure has been known to pose a challenge for larger guests. Test seats are located both inside and outside of the queue, and I highly recommend you check them out before committing to the often-lengthy wait for this ride.

Hagrid's Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure test seats
Test seats for Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure

Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure offers two different seating options: the motorbike and the sidecar. The motorbike has you position yourself just as you would on a real-life motorcycle, while the sidecar has a lap restraint setup similar to Harry Potter and the Escape from Gringotts. Depending on your proportions, you may find it easier to comfortably fit in one location over the other, so be sure to try out both.

Surprisingly, of the two seating options, I’ve found that the sidecar is more likely to pose a problem than the motorbike. Just like Gringotts, Hagrid’s sidecar has a shin guard that may cause difficulty or discomfort for both larger and taller guests alike. The motorbike, on the other hand, offers a little more breathing room, making it a bit easier to get that light on the restraint to turn green. Your best bet is to opt for the motorbike and employ the same technique as you would on Revenge of the Mummy: sit up straight and suck in your gut as you pull the restraint down. And, as always, when in doubt, ride with a friend who can help you out.

One more note about Hagrid’s Motorbike Adventure: remember how I said there are test seats both inside and outside of the queue? The interior ones are located quite a distance inside – just before you board the ride, in fact. Depending on your size, there’s a chance a team member will request you to hop into the test seat to ensure that you’ll be able to fit before boarding. If you can’t get the light on the restraint to turn green, you won’t be able to ride, so definitely be sure to take advantage of those outdoor test seats before you spend numerous hours in line.

Jurassic World VelociCoaster

The newest kid on the block at Universal’s Islands of Adventure is the “apex predator of coasters,” but is it one that guests of all sizes can experience? Jurassic World VelociCoaster is a thrill coaster that has to be experienced to be believed. The downside is that this ride is right on the cusp of being unfriendly to larger guests, and whether or not you can ride it will be on a case-by-case basis. The good news is that the unique ride seat for this coaster is forgiving in terms of leg room, and the lap bar maneuver is relatively simple and straightforward. The bad news is that even if you are able to ride, many larger guests have commented that the ride experience is incredibly uncomfortable.

Test Seat for Jurassic World VelociCoaster
Test Seat for Jurassic World VelociCoaster
Test Seat for Jurassic World VelociCoaster

As is the case with all the attractions on this list, the decision of whether or not you go is ultimately up to you. But first, let’s just get you on the ride and give you the option to decide. Just as is the case with Hagrid’s Motorbike Adventure, there are two ride test seats available for you to try out. Both utilize the green/red light system to indicate whether or not you are meeting safety measures while in the seat. One test seat is outside the attraction and hidden by shrubs to allow for more privacy, and the other is further in the queue, so if you become unsure later on you can double-check before officially getting on the ride vehicle and risking disappointment or embarrassment. When you get into the ride seat, sit as straight up as possible and pull the down the bar on the sides over your head. Pulling the restraint down in this way will allow your torso to widen and flatten a little bit, giving more room to adjust to the seat. After that, you can relax a bit and (in my case) even rest some of your stomach over the bar if you need.

Let’s say that you made it through all the loops and uncertainties of getting on the coaster. Now that you’re there, there’s something else to consider — the ride can be physically uncomfortable for larger guests to experience. VelociCoaster’s sheer intensity adds to the discomfort present in any rollercoaster, but the intensity in this ride is more notable than in others. Personally, this is a ride that I can squeeze onto but usually only get on if other members in my party really want to ride it, or if we have someone in our group who has never ridden it before. For a person of my size and stature, it’s rideable, but not overly enjoyable. That being said, if you can get on it, it’s worth doing at least once. There’s no other coaster like it at the parks.

Everything else at Universal’s two theme parks

Now, in addition to all the rides that we’ve just gone over, Universal also lists other attractions that may not be able to accommodate those guests whose waistline is 40″ or greater:

Universal Studios Florida

Islands of Adventure

However, I personally have been able to fit on all these, and I haven’t heard of any serious issues for other larger riders.

Do keep in mind that some attractions – such as Spider-Man, Transformers, Jurassic Park, The Simpsons, and Despicable Me – all use single bars that pull down across an entire row. Despicable Me and The Simpsons, in particular, can get a little tight when the restraint is lowered. Because of this design, your size may leave a small child with a lot of extra room. This can scare some children when the ride starts, so be advised.

What about Volcano Bay?

Since Volcano Bay, Universal Orlando’s water theme park, consists mainly of water slides, it’s an entirely different beast. Some of the rides here do operate on a strict weight limit, especially those that use a drop door to send guests careening down. If you exceed the weight limit, you can’t ride – it’s as simple as that.

Here’s what Volcano Bay’s restrictions look like:

In addition, there are a number of multi-person rides that have a total weight limit. I’m going to list these here, too, in case you had your eye on one of these, as well:

I will say that Universal seems to be constantly tweaking these weight limits (for the individual slides, at least), trying to get them as low as possible while still being able to maintain riders’ safety. Before you purchase your water-park tickets, take the ride over, and then wait in Volcano Bay’s “lines,” make sure to double-check with the company directly – it’ll potentially save you a lot of time (and heartache).

Finally, I’d like to point out that Universal uses the same fine-print disclaimer for each of the above rides: “This attraction may not accommodate certain people due to their body shape or size.” So just keep that in the back of your mind, as well.

Addressing our grievances

What happens if you have a condition that makes weight loss nearly impossible, and you simply can’t ride the attraction you want? All you can do is complain to Universal. Before I moved to Orlando, I went to Universal Orlando Resort shortly after it modified the Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey restraints so I could ride for the first time. Unfortunately, I didn’t fit into the seat. I’d spent over $1,000 on my flight, room, and food just to experience the new Harry Potter attraction, and I was unable to do so. This upset me, especially when I thought about the fact that I didn’t have any trouble fitting on any of the rides at Disney, and some of them are very intense, as well.

Needless to say, I went to Guest Services and complained. To their great credit, they apologized and gave me a total refund for the admission to their parks. They told me they hear this complaint a lot, and they will take it into account in the future. Not long afterward, I spoke with a Universal engineer away from the parks, and he told me that they had factored this into the design of Harry Potter and the Escape from Gringotts. If this is correct, then it means that negative feedback from larger people helped influence Universal’s design for a ride to make it more accessible. I was glad to hear this, and, hopefully, it bodes well for the park’s future.

Plan ahead and have a blast!

If you’re a larger guest, it’s best to expect some problems with a few of the rides at Universal. If it’s the first time you’ve heard of these issues and you’re planning on going to Universal Orlando within a year or so, then take that time to start dieting and exercising – maybe you can use this problem as an incentive to drop a few pounds before taking your big trip to the resort. I know this is easier said than done (I’m living proof), but just walking regularly will condition you to be able to at least navigate the parks without being overly fatigued or needing a scooter (don’t get me started on those things!).

If you don’t have the time to lose weight before your vacation, or if you just can’t reach an ideal weight, then use my tips – just remember that, even with all my information, you might not be able to get on certain rides. As long as you’re prepared for that potential disappointment, you can still have a fun time at this awesome resort!

Realistic expectations while visiting Orlando’s theme parks with a child who has special needs https://orlandoinformer.com/blog/realistic-expectations-visiting-orlando-theme-parks-developmentally-disabled-child/ Fri, 01 May 2020 17:20:00 +0000 https://orlandoinformer.com/?p=123932 Our 10 best tips for having a fantastic time at Disney, Universal, and SeaWorld with a special-needs family member.

The post Realistic expectations while visiting Orlando’s theme parks with a child who has special needs appeared first on Orlando Informer.

]]>
You’re very excited about your decision to travel to Orlando and experience a thrilling time at the theme parks with your family member who has special needs! I have a teenage son with severe autism who absolutely loves the parks.

Throughout our visits, I’ve learned that the key to having a fun and successful vacation is to have realistic expectations. Here are my top 10 pieces of advice to keep in mind while embarking on your Orlando adventure.

1. Plan it out

Realistic expectations include a plan. The basics of budget, hotel, food, transportation, and your family member’s special needs must all be considered in advance. Do you need a room that does not have direct access to the outside if your child is an “escape artist”? Is your family member on a gluten-free diet? Will you be driving to Orlando or flying? If you are flying, are you relying on available park transportation or renting your own? Are taxi rides something you’ll consider if your special-needs relation cannot tolerate crowded buses or boats?

These are potential situations that are easy to overlook in your eagerness to get to the parks, but thinking (way) ahead can go a long way in ensuring you have a smooth trip.

2. Know your limits

Realistic expectations include being aware of how much you can do in a day. Before leaving home, you and your family will need to understand that it just isn’t possible to do everything, and that’s okay! A willingness to forgo some attractions or, even, particular theme parks will be necessary.

It’s a good idea to go back to your hotel to rest or take a swim to cool off in the middle of the day; then, after dinner, head back out to the parks. Even if your child doesn’t nap, he or she will get a break from all the stimulation. Of course, you know your child best – sometimes it might be better to stay until dinner-time and make an early night of it.

3. Catch (and coordinate!) those Z’s

An out-of-this-world handshake from a familiar friend

Expect to keep a similar sleep routine. Is your family a group of night-owls, or are they up before the sun? Keeping a coordinated sleep schedule on vacation will help minimize family members’ crankiness.

Furthermore, my mother-in-law always said “go a day, rest a day” regarding her vacations. This may not be practical in your situation, but spending long hours at the theme parks each day of your vacation can be exhausting. Prioritize and value your downtime in the midst of the excitement – you’ll have more energy for the fun that’s yet to come!

4. Mark your calendars

Use a schedule to help with transition issues and your special-needs family member’s expectations. We use a calendar and write what park we are attending each day. While on vacation, we put the calendar in a prominent place in the hotel room, and my son knows what to expect. This helps alleviate some of the anxiety that may arise from a big day.

Naturally, plans may change, but this gives everyone a good starting point. If your child can’t read, use pictures of the theme parks’ major symbols. Social stories on the subject of what will happen while on vacation may also help your family member.

5. Beat the heat

Expect it to be hot and that you will experience afternoon thunderstorms from May through September. Although, on the other hand, don’t let the weather stop you – put on your ponchos and keep going if it’s raining. On other days, don’t forget to put on sunscreen and a hat before you leave your hotel.

Drink plenty of water (much more than usual!) throughout the day to stay hydrated. If the heat becomes a little overwhelming, find somewhere in the air conditioning or shade to cool off as soon as you can. Heat can heighten anxiety and induce meltdowns, so you may even find it helpful to map out a few “emergency cool-down” areas before your trip.

6. Know your crowd

Having a blast over the holidays!

Expect crowded conditions if you are planning a vacation during the summer months (mid-May to September), during the week of every major US holiday (especially Christmas), or during the months of March and April. (See the OI crowd calendar to learn more information.) If your family member with special needs can’t handle crowds, try to plan a vacation during the off-peak times. Personally, our favorite times to visit the theme parks are early December and early January, but there are other low-level crowd days during the year.

7. Get those steps in

Expect a lot of walking – it is not unusual to put in three to five miles in a typical day. If your family is not used to moving that much, start a walking program at least a month prior to your vacation. Wear sturdy shoes while visiting the theme parks. Check your special-needs family member’s feet often, especially the first day – he may not be able to tell you he’s getting a blister. (This amount of walking should be kept in mind when deciding to bring or rent a stroller for your younger child, as well.)

8. Pick up your passes

A vital factor for realistic expectations is a clear understanding of the guest assistance passes that each park or resort – Walt Disney World, Universal Orlando, and SeaWorld Orlando – provides. You can pick it up as you enter the respective theme park, but be aware that each is different both in appearance and how it can be used.

Be certain you clearly understand how the passes work. You can learn all about Universal’s here.

9. Prevention is key

Expect that your child will exhibit behaviors like she does at home. For some, the behaviors may be more pronounced because you are in a new location or your child is overstimulated. Know the triggers and warning signs of a meltdown and be on the lookout for them, if possible. Be mindful in not letting her get too hungry, thirsty, or tired, as these factors can contribute to potential meltdowns. If it’s at all feasible, try to remove her to a more isolated location and work with her behavior as best you can.

10. Become comfortable with comfort zones

Character meets can be really fun but also aren’t for everyone!

Have reasonable expectations about meeting characters and riding attractions. Some kids are terrified of large costumed characters; try not to become disappointed or pushy if your child won’t stand next to Goofy. Depending on the child, you may find it helpful to show him pictures and/or videos of characters engaging with other children, to allow him to become more comfortable with the process. This also applies to the attractions, as POV-style ride videos may help prepare him for the real thing.

Conversely, some children are dazzled by their favorite characters and may become upset when they have to leave them. And some can’t cope with all the stimulation of a ride, whether it be good or bad; therefore, take a break while the rest of the family goes on it. Others, like my son, want to experience one specific attraction repeatedly, so be prepared to factor this aspect into your plans, as well.

All things considered, your trip to Orlando can be a magical experience for everyone in the family as long as you keep these realistic expectations in mind. Please remember to thank those team members who happily go the extra mile in providing accommodations for you and your loved ones (we’ve found them all to be very courteous).

I hope you and your family have an amazing vacation! And then, when you get back, I hope you also share your experiences with 100,000+ other theme-park fanatics in our Orlando Informer Community on Facebook.

After years of speculation, planning, and unforeseen delays, Universal Beijing Resort is officially open to the public! So what’s Universal Beijing Resort like? On the one hand, the contents are what you’d expect, featuring such greatest hits as The Wizarding World of Harry Potter and Minion Land (the themed area that was designed for Universal Studios Japan and will soon be exported to Universal Studios Singapore); on the other hand, however, there are a few surprises in there, including both original locations and souped-up versions of tried-and-true concepts.

It’s worth taking just a moment to go over all these developments – not only may this foretell the possible future of the company’s very first theme-park resort, here in Orlando (as we’ve been saying for the past year-and-a-half now), but it’s also enough to get any theme-loving fan’s heart rate up. What could possibly be better than that?

Oh, yeah – there’s one final reason to pay attention to Universal Beijing Resort: there are a few fun Universal Orlando Resort cameos that pop up, including The Toothsome Chocolate Emporium & Savory Feast Kitchen, the Red Oven Pizza Bakery, and oh, the Volcano Bay water theme park. In Hollywood, the introductory land will feature a Mel’s Drive-In and Universal Music Plaza stage (imported from Florida) and a “Lights, Camera, Action!” show co-hosted by directors Steven Spielberg and Zhang Yimou (adapted from Japan). It just may be that the future of these two Universal destinations really will be intertwined.

Universal Studios Beijing’s Lands

The Wizarding World of Harry Potter - Hogsmeade at Universal Studios Beijing
The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Hogsmeade at Universal Studios Beijing

Universal Studios Beijing will consist of seven different themed lands. While this may be one less than what either Universal Studios Florida or Islands of Adventure currently has on hand, they look to be bigger than their American counterparts, and will likely feature more “immersive” isolation from one another, as well (although not quite as much as what is hinted at in the early concept art of Epic Universe, the currently-under-construction theme park in Orlando).

Here are the seven lands and their attractions:

Jurassic World: Isla Nublar – this “larger than life” area seemingly boasts all-new experiences that are nonetheless inspired by (at least the layout of) Islands of Adventure’s Jurassic Park. Expect to encounter velociraptors, ankylosaurs, tyrannosaurs rex, and, of course, the Indominus Rex.

 • Jurassic World Adventure – A river adventure taken to a whole new level. Guests will see many of the dinosaurs they have come to respect and fear in the many years of the Jurassic Park franchise.
 • Raptor Encounter – Come face to face with life-sized Velociraptors. Don’t worry – they won’t bite! (At least, we hope.)
 • Jurassic Flyers – Much like Pteranodon Flyers at Jurassic Park, Jurassic Flyers will take guests on a birds-eye view of Jurassic World.

Transformers: Metrobase – the first-ever Transformer-themed land in the world sees Metrobase, a city-sized robot, set up shop in an Energon-rich location in China. The two rides hinted at in the announcement materials include Transformers: The Ride – 3D (which was originally created for Universal Studios Singapore and Hollywood) and, apparently, a re-skinned clone of The Incredible Hulk Coaster (which should prove to be interesting!).

 • Transformers: Battle for the AllSpark – See if you have what it takes to defeat Megatron. Your job is to help Optimus Prime keep the AllSpark safe, if you can.
 • Decepticoaster – A high-speed coaster on an impressive track, Decepticoaster takes you through the Decepticon Driller to show you how it harnesses the power of Energon. Hang tight!

Kung Fu Panda Land of Awesomeness – this entirely indoor theme-park land(!) recreates Legendary China from the film series. Although there is clearly an emphasis on rides and shows, there also seems to be an equal one on food and drinks – perhaps Universal is hoping this will strike a chord with Asian audiences the same way that Harry Potter has with American park-going ones.

 • Kung Fu Games – Take a gander at some fun carnival-style games in this section of the park. Show off your prowess in whatever way you can – through speed, accuracy, or sheer power!
 • Kung Fu Panda Journey of the Dragon Warrior – Join forces with Po and the Furious Five to help defend the Valley of Peace from Kai, who has escaped from the Urn of Eternal Imprisonment.
 • Carousel of Kung Fu Heroes – Choose a hero and hop on for the ride! This charming little carousel will take guests for a sweet spin.

WaterWorld – the famed stunt show from Hollywood (and Japan) is making its way to Beijing, becoming the anchor of its very own land. Although we don’t yet know what, exactly, this expansion will entail beyond a show, we do at least know that it’ll include “dining and other entertainment offerings.”

The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – the fourth iteration of Hogsmeade looks to most closely mirror the Japanese version, which doesn’t include Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure but which does boast an actual Black Lake, situated right next to Hogwarts Castle. This could also be the most beautiful Wizarding World take yet, if the video is anything to go by – the trees lining the way to Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey are snow-covered, although this could simply be the byproduct of the park’s geographical location (it’s approximately the same latitude as Washington, DC) and not new, enhanced theming.

 • Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey – This seems to be a remake of the one we are all familiar with. Guests will be taken on an unusual tour of Hogwarts Castle and the grounds.
 • Flight of the Hippogriff – Another remake of the one at Universal’s Islands of Adventure. Take your family on this short but sweet coaster after learning how to properly approach and respect one of the most beautiful of magical creatures – the Hippogriff!

Minion Land – the second Minion Land looks to be inspired by the Universal Studios Japan original but, possibly, featuring all-new rides (plus a copy of Despicable Me Minion Mayhem, of course). If we had to place a bet, our money would be on this part of the park being the traditional kids’ corner, thanks in no small part to the official description stating that it’ll feature “fun for the whole family.”

 • Loop-Dee Doop-Dee – Described as a “family friendly coaster,” this cute attraction will take families for a loop-dee-doop before catapulting them through the Super Silly Creature’s mouth!
 • Super Swirly – Think of the “One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish” ride at USF. Get in a ride vehicle at Super Silly Fun Land pier and enjoy a 360 view of this section of the park. This attraction is friendly for guests of all ages.
 • Despicable Me Minion Mayhem – A remake of the popular attraction we all know and love, this experience will take guests through Gru’s house and train them to become part of the minion army!

Universal Studios Beijing features – for Universal – a peculiar design, with nearly half of its themed areas hugging a traditional central lagoon and then roughly the other half being placed behind them; in this way, Jurassic World sits on the opposite side of the water from the entry Hollywood (just as in Islands of Adventure), even though it’s the second land you can journey to in the park. When combined with Epic Universe’s layout, it would seem that the company is really interested in experimenting with and tweaking its overall approach to design.

The general layout of Universal Orlando, which features a central CityWalk that branches out to the two theme parks, looks to be perfectly mimicked here in Universal Beijing, right down to the parking lot leading to Universal CityWalk Beijing via covered walkway. Although it’s hard to get a good, hard sense of scale, it would seem that this newest dining/shopping/entertainment district fairs a bit bigger than Orlando’s 30 acres – it’ll even include a forested park area that runs parallel to the complex’s main dining and retail drag.

Notably, CityWalk at Universal Beijing Resort is the first Universal resort to have a metro or subway station onsite. Two subway station lines connected to expressways, airports, bus lines, and the greater downtown Beijing area as a whole make Universal Studios Beijing the most conveniently publicly-accessed Universal Studios park in the world. The park also has parking facilities to accommodate more than 10,000 vehicles.

CityWalk previews revealed a few installations we are familiar with: Toothsome Chocolate Emporium & Savory Feast Kitchen, an original Universal creation that has easily become the flagship eatery here in Florida, CityWalk Red Oven Pizza Bakery, and Bubba Gump Shrimp Co., the longtime mainstay on both American coasts.

The missing item in this CityWalk comparison, of course, is the presence of a second park. When this first phase of Universal Beijing opens within the next two years, it’ll sit on just 420 acres of the 1,000 or so that have been earmarked for the resort – meaning that at least one additional park, whether theme or water, is already on the way. (Let’s put this size in context: until just recently, when Universal purchased the real estate that it now calls the south campus of its Floridian empire, 1,000 acres was some 20% bigger than Universal Orlando Resort.) The only question is what, exactly, that second park would be – and the video coyly shows Volcano Bay lurking in the background, sitting more-or-less next to Universal Studios Beijing. While there is, again, no way to tell whether this is a placeholder background element or a tease of future development, it’s nonetheless exciting to see that the water park may make an international sojourn in the very near future.

Universal Beijing Resort’s hotels

The final item in Beijing’s long-awaited rollout is also the least talked-about, but it nonetheless provides some interesting fodder for our fevered fanboy imaginations.

We have known that there were going to be two on-site hotels for quite some time – one themed to Universal itself (for the very first time) and the other a new Nuo Resort, a chain of lavish properties themed to Chinese history. Now we have a much better idea of what to expect from each, starting with the fact that, Universal says, they’ll both offer “incredibly immersive experiences through the perfect blending of unique stylish designs and historic and cultural features.”

The Universal Studios Grand Hotel will have as its theme a contemporary interpretation of Hollywood’s Golden Age, offering classic Spanish architecture and a celebration of Universal Pictures’s “century-long contribution to the film industry” (read: expect to see a lot of movie memorabilia, perhaps in a Hard Rock Hotel fashion). It’ll consist of 800 rooms, making it just slightly larger than Portofino Bay Hotel, and will, most notably, take a page right out of Disneyland Paris’s book, perching itself right at the front gate of the theme park (which is a bit different than Epic Universe’s apparent hotel, which will be situated inside of the park, towards its very back).

Nuo Resort Hotel – Universal Beijing Resort is only 400 rooms (making it noticeably smaller than any of the Universal Orlando hotels) and sounds as if it’ll be an ultra-luxurious affair: recreating China’s ancient royal garden, it’ll have “the feel of a private retreat,” creating an island of tranquility “amidst the fast-paced energy” of Universal Beijing. It can be spotted in the artwork just off to the side of both Universal Studios Grand Hotel and Universal Studios Beijing, with a waterway that’ll connect it to the others (perhaps offering a private entranceway of some kind in the process?). And just in case you missed the point of Nuo, Universal throws in one last description of it feeling like a “palatial resort” before ending its press release – if it were situated in Florida, it might represent an ultra-deluxe category, sitting above the premier designation of Portofino, Hard Rock, and Royal Pacific Resort.

Last week, Universal Orlando Resort kicked off the 2018 new-attraction-offering cycle by grand-opening Voodoo Doughnut and Fast and Furious – Supercharged. Throughout the three-day celebration there was confetti, explosions, and lots of new details dropped about the future. If you missed it, no worries – we’re here to breakdown the important stuff. Starting with…

Confirmed: Universal Studios Florida to debut a new nighttime spectacular in summer 2018

Fireworks at Universal Studios Florida
Ready for a new kiss goodnight?

While discussing Fast and Furious – Supercharged, Senior Vice President of Universal Creative Thierry Coup let it drop that Universal Studios Florida would see the replacement of Universal’s Cinematic Spectacular later this year. Over the past few months, the park’s lagoon and neighboring Central Park have both seen an extraordinary amount of construction in anticipation of the yet-to-be-named offering.

New Harry Potter coaster to be impressive

This is kind of a given, but in discussing the new offerings coming to the resort, Thierry Coup didn’t mince words when talking about the 2019 addition. “This is one of the most-themed coasters ever,” he gushed to the gathered media.

Baron Voodoo makes first, potentially last appearance

Voodoo Doughnut
CityWalk’s latest addition and our newest addiction

To help ring in the official opening of the first Voodoo Doughnut on the east coast – and Universal CityWalk’s newest eatery – founders Tres Shannon and Cat Daddy (Kenneth Pogson) were joined onstage by Baron Voodoo, the mascot on the famed pink boxes. This marks the first and only time the Cajun character has made an appearance at any of the eight Voodoo locations. Unlike Professor Doctor Penelope Toothsome, who can regularly be found at her namesake greeting guests, Baron’s appearance seems to be a one-time treat (for now).

Fast and Furious – Supercharged to go international

Coming soon to a new park near you… that is, if you live in China

It may not be in the same vein as Tokyo Drift, but Universal Creative explained during a presentation that they had so much faith in Universal Orlando’s newest attraction, it would be getting opening-day billing over at Universal Studios Beijing. The move, which some questioned via social media, will likely be well received due to how well The Fate of the Furious did at the Chinese box office (it did better over there than here in the US).

Aventura Hotel’s Bar 17 Bistro to feature millennial-friendly food and beverage

During the Loews Hotel presentation, guests were offered a number of tastes from around the five on-site hotels. In addition to that, the new Aventura Hotel (slated to open in August) was represented by two flavors: Marrakech Lamb Skewers and a Zen Mojito (a twist on a refreshing classic). True to the promise that the rooftop Bar 17 Bistro would offer small plates along with specially-crafted cocktails, the lamb skewers were a delicious appetizer that paired well with the mojito.

Hungry yet?

There was a lot to celebrate, but the year is far from over – in the upcoming months, we have so much more to look forward to as the parks continue to open new experiences.

But, at least for now, 2018 belongs to Universal.

With spring in full swing, some of us are focused on getting our swimsuits ready for summer vacation. If you’re planning a trip to Orlando, chances are you’ve thought about checking out one of the five water parks in the area. But which one is right for you?

We break down the best of the best to give you a better idea of where to show off those washboard abs (or washboard abs t-shirt).

Best thrill slides: Universal’s Volcano Bay

Krakatau Aqua Coaster
Wooooooooooo hoooooooooooo! (photo: Universal)

Orlando’s newest water park is home to some of the most extreme slides in Orlando. Resting towards the top of the 200-foot-tall Krakatau Volcano are three drop slides. The first two, Kala and Tai Nui Serpentine Body Slides, take you on a fast and winding adventure down the volcano. Ko’okiri Body Plunge, meanwhile, goes straight down 125 feet at a 70-degree angle.

In addition to those three heart-pounding rides, Volcano Bay is also home to Ohya and Ohno Drop Slides, two slides that shoot you out four feet and six feet (respectively) above the surface of the water. Honu (of Honu ika Moana) is a thrilling raft ride with high slide walls that takes you for an exhilarating, if not seemingly gravity-defying, journey. And, finally, Krakatau Aqua Coaster – although not a traditional slide – is a must-do attraction at Universal Orlando Resort; this thrilling water coaster uses linear induction technology to shoot your raft up and down a track that runs in and out of the volcano that it’s named for.

Best wave pool: Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon

Typhoon Wave Pool
Surf’s up! (photo: Disney)

In some categories, the difference between winner and runner-up is razor thin. Here, it’s not even close – Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon is known for its signature wave pool. Touted as North America’s largest, this pool routinely cranks out swells of up to six feet. It’s powerful enough that, before the park opens, guests can take surfing lessons.

If you love a good wave pool, you’ll be blown away by your experience at Walt Disney World’s older water park.

Best family-friendly park: Aquatica Orlando

Lazy river at Aquatica
Doesn’t matter how old you are – this is awesome (photo: SeaWorld)

SeaWorld’s Aquatica has been consistently rated as one of Orlando’s top water parks by a number of publications over the years. With a diverse line of attractions, including large water play areas for kids, Aquatica has something for everyone in the family.

One of the signature attractions that will delight children and adults alike is Dolphin Plunge, a water slide that gives you a look inside a Commerson’s dolphin’s habitat. In addition to that close encounter, there is also Loggerhead Lane, a lazy river that puts you next to fish and other marine wildlife.

Most relaxing: Discovery Cove

Discovery Cove pool
A water park unlike any other (photo: SeaWorld)

Out of all of the water parks in Orlando, one remains a best-kept secret despite being considered one of the best park experiences in the world. The all-inclusive Discovery Cove is a stark contrast from its competitors, replacing a park’s traditionally loud and exciting environment with a more tranquil and easy-going one. Once checked in with the staff, you’re free to relax, explore, eat, and drink, all at your leisure; it expertly blends the wonder of nature with the serenity of a spa. And added upgrades like SeaVenture (think snorkeling meets scuba), a dolphin experience, swimming with sharks, and stingray feeding make the day even more incredible.

Best food: Universal’s Volcano Bay

Jerked Mahi-Mahi Sandwich
Water park food will never be the same

Although Discovery Cove comes incredibly close with its gourmet food and all-day drink and snack selection, ultimately Volcano Bay wins with its robust menu and unique offerings. Hawaiian ribs, coconut-crusted fried chicken, jerk-seasoned mahi-mahi, and sushi are just a few of the dozens of food options available. Over 21? Enjoy a Vol’s Fire Punch from the Dancing Dragons Boat Bar or Ko’okiri Plunge from the Kunuku Boat Bar.

Best value: Aquatica

Slides at Aquatica
First one down wins! (photo: SeaWorld)

This, too, is a no-brainer. With tickets starting at $49.99 if you buy in advance (and $59.99 at the gate), Aquatica is the cheapest water park in the area. In addition to being a great value, Aquatica is also consistently growing, having added two rides in the last four years (including Ray Rush, which opens later this year).

The ride selection, along with the price, make Aquatica the go-to park to visit if you’re looking for a great value.

The good news is that, regardless of whichever Central Florida water park you visit, you’re bound to have a great time. Throw on your flip flops, grab a towel, and we’ll see you out there!

For almost 10 years, Universal Orlando has challenged itself to think outside the normal theme park fare and create food and beverage offerings that are as unique as the other experiences they craft. Since then, we’ve seen addition after fantastic addition become part of the new norm, and it’s been delicious. Gone are the days of the slushie – long live the Toothsome milkshake.

That said, is there a line? Can too much of a good thing really be a thing? What started out as a harmless joke in the office quickly mutated into a real-life experiment that would have even Victor Frankenstein himself say, “Calm down, bro – it’s a little much.”

This week, we took four Voodoo Doughnut doughnuts and paired them with four other resort favorites. The following was done without professionals and under the supervision of nobody. Viewer discretion is advised.

1. Mango Tango on top of Margaritaville’s Mango Margarita

Doughnut on a margarita
Must be 21-years-old and up to enjoy this madness

Sure, it sounds disgusting, but imagine our surprise when we realized the tastes play fairly well together. The strong, sweet, and tangy notes of the doughnut go well with the subtle flavors and refreshing taste of the margarita. If you’re going to brave one of these concoctions, we recommend trying this one out.

2. The Loop on top of the Jolly Berry cotton candy from Honk Honkers

Voodoo Doughnut on cotton candy
Spoiler alert: if you hold this upright, the results are on you

Is it normal? Nope. Practical? Not even a little bit. Easy to eat? Hahaha.

That said, does it make for a pleasing photo? Absolutely… but just don’t try eating both at the same time. Contrary to popular belief (when consulting a room of seven-year-olds), a giant helping of spun sugar is not best enjoyed with a doughnut covered in Froot Loops. We made it halfway through the incredible mountain of Jolly Berry cotton candy, and five bites of the doughnut, before we started to realize the error of our ways.

3. Bacon Maple Bar on top of a Frozen Butterbeer

Maple Bacon Bar on Butterbeer
Riddikulus!

We’re still on the fence about this one, and probably will be for a while. On the one hand, the salty flavor of the bacon works as well for the Butterbeer as the maple doughnut it sits on. On the other, however, the combination as a whole brings sweet to a whole new level. Regardless, this photo made our dentist cry.

Let’s say, for now, both are incredible treats that are a must-try (on their own) during your next trip.

4. Voodoo Doll on a Toothsome Red Velvet Milkshake

an abomination
We were so preoccupied with whether or not we could, we didn’t stop to think if we SHOULD

If there was ever a photo or food pairing that came off as extra, this would be it. Period.

A rich milkshake topped with a big cupcake – and a giant doughnut. What’s interesting about this marrying of madness is that the two share a delicious raspberry component: the swirl in the shake and the filling in the doughnut. The shake itself is light enough to eat with the doughnut; however, all bets are off when you try incorporating the cupcake or the frosting on the top of the shake.

It was clear after the fact that this was a step too far. Next time, we look forward to enjoying both separately.

The post 8 movies you should watch before visiting Disney World appeared first on Orlando Informer.

]]>
If there’s one thing that The Walt Disney Company truly excels at, it’s storytelling. Generations have grown up, fallen in love, and shared Disney’s stories with their children for almost 100 years. Most of these stories start out as a film project from Walt Disney Studios, Pixar, Lucasfilm, Marvel (jeez, they really do own everything) and then make their way into consumer products and experiential tie-ins. Being in Central Florida, the latter is what generally gets us excited, because experiential tie-ins almost always include Disney’s swath of world-famous theme parks.

So while you’re planning your Walt Disney World vacation, it might behoove you to watch a Disney movie (or two)… you know, for research purposes, and to best prepare yourself for your experience. Or something like that.

What should you be watching before your trip? Well, let’s break it down by park, selecting two films for each one.

Magic Kingdom

Without a doubt the toughest park to pick just two movies to watch before visiting, Walt Disney’s magnum opus is home to a ton of characters. So, how do you pick which ones matter the most? Do you go by intellectual property footprint? If so, you could make an argument for Beauty and the Beast (Enchanted Tales with Belle, Festival of Fantasy parade appearance, Be Our Guest restaurant, and the “Be Our Guest” scene in Mickey’s PhilharMagic). Do you go by what is most relevant in today’s pop culture? Moana, Anna, and Elsa spring to mind here.

Bottom line, to get this right, we did a lot of thinking and even more justifying.

Cinderella (1950)

Cinderella transforming
68 years old and still magical

Super-short film summary: girl with really bad luck turns it around with a fairy godmother and a killer set of heels.

Magic Kingdom Hub
It may be his world, but her castle is the star… at least, according to my six-year-old cousin

Why watch? A classic Disney tale for a classic Disney park, Cinderella puts you in the right state of mind to experience Magic Kingdom while also threading parallels between the two. First, the big one: Cinderella’s Castle. The focal point of the park is one of the most recognizable icons in the world and features Cinderella’s Royal Table, arguably the most famous character dining experience at the entire resort. It is also home to the Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique, where parents can turn their children into princesses. And outside of the castle, Cinderella has a presence in both a meet-‘n-greet and in the Festival of Fantasy parade.

All of that said, its footprint wasn’t the entire reason we picked this movie. With classics like Sleeping Beauty, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Peter Pan, and others fading into the backdrop of time while newer stories and franchises dominate the mainstream, it’s a strong representative of the past for a park that embodies nostalgia. Cinderella is about an ordinary person getting to experience something extraordinary, and, for most, that feeling comes alive when you first set foot onto Main Street, USA.

Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003)

Jack Sparrow at the wheel of a ship
They see me rollin’, they hatin’… patrolling, they try to catch me ridin’ dirty

Super-short film summary: Romeo and Juliet without the tragic ending and with Johnny Depp on his way to a Jimmy Buffett concert.

Pirates of the Caribbean
One ride scene that helped inspire a billion-dollar franchise

Why watch? Over the years, Disney has tried a handful of times to work its magic on live-action stories based off of themed attractions from their parks – with very little success. In fact, in a world where Tomorrowland, The Haunted Mansion, and Tower of Terror exist, there’s only one live-action film based on a ride that breaks the curse of sub-par films: Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl. Originally released without the trademark Walt Disney Pictures production logo, the original Pirates was a huge gamble Disney took to appeal to the male (and older) demographic. It wasn’t until the gamble paid off that Disney started attaching its logo to the sequels.

What makes Pirates a must-watch is that it allows younger (and, in some cases, older) generations to connect with more modern characters and, therefore, make the classic ride (and, ergo, perhaps others) more enticing to experience.

Epcot

Unlike Magic Kingdom, Epcot’s character integration is less heavy-handed (and for good reason). With science and international culture taking a front-row seat at Walt Disney World’s second theme park, characters and intellectual properties (for now) serve as a themed enhancer rather than the main show. With that said, there are still a few titles that can better prepare you for your day at the park.

Finding Nemo (2003)

Finding Nemo still
Believe it or not, it’s a kid’s movie

Super-short film summary: a reinterpretation of every parent losing their kid at a mall in the 90’s.

Bruce and Nemo
If you can’t name the two fish in this photo, you should watch the movie (photo: Disney)

Why watch? If you have to watch one film, this is it. The Seas with Nemo & Friends is part dark ride, part discovery center, part 5.7 million gallon aquarium, and part interactive show with a totally rad CGI turtle – all rolled into one giant experience. The dark ride is one of my personal favorites – a calming, fun, family-friendly attraction that minimizes the basic premise of the film and plays it out for guests. At the end of the attraction, guests exit into The Seas, where they can view dolphins, sharks, turtles, and fish in a simulated habitat meant to inspire and educate. Catching the movie beforehand will allow you the opportunity to call out to the characters that are sprinkled throughout the attraction.

Frozen (2013)

Elsa
Be honest… you’re singing the song in your head right now, aren’t you?

Super-short film summary: a tale of two sisters; one dealing with boy troubles, the other with ice powers.

Norway in Epcot
Do you want to get a FastPass? We can save time an hour or two…

Why watch? When Maelstrom in the Norway Pavilion of World Showcase closed in 2014 to make way for an all-new experience revolving around Disney’s blockbuster hit Frozen, guests and employees alike were apprehensive of the change. However, infusing a bit of the Norway-inspired Arendelle into the land helped generate new interest, and now those who fell in love with the Frozen characters can experience them in an environment that is both inspiring and educational.

Can’t deal with that? Then you know what you can do.

Hollywood Studios

Hollywood Studios is in the middle of a re-envisioning, with a healthy chunk of the park currently closed for two giant projects set to debut over the next two years. When completed, the makeup of the park and the overall experience it provides will be drastically different than it is now. So, what should you watch to help get ready?

Toy Story (1995)

Buzz and Woody
One is a hard-nosed lawman, and the other… is a hard-nosed lawman

Super-short film summary: Disney-Pixar’s version of Child’s Play.

Slinky Dog Dash at Disney World's Toy Story Land
Slinky Dog Dash at Disney World’s Toy Story Land

Why watch? With Toy Story Land opening this June, now is as good a time as any to (re)familiarize yourself with Buzz, Woody, and the gang before stepping into their world. With the future land serving as home to Toy Story Mania, Slinky Dog Dash, Alien Swirling Saucers, and Pizza Planet, along with a slew of film characters and call-outs, it’s best to brush up on your toy knowledge before trekking through Andy’s backyard.

Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens (2015)

The Force Awakens
A long time ago, in a galaxy divided by people who are still arguing about “The Last Jedi”…

Super-short film summary: Episode IV: A New Hope for millennials.

Millennium Falcon Ride
A look at what to expect from the new Millennium Falcon attraction (photo: Nvidia)

Why watch? With the numerous projects that Walt Disney World has on-hand for the next five years, none are quite as anticipated as Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge. This incredibly immersive land is rumored to raise an already-high bar on theme-park quality by providing guests a next-level experience. With two rides and new immersive dining and merchandise options, along with an all-new hotel experience, Galaxy’s Edge will make Disney’s Hollywood Studios one of the parks you have to visit in 2019. These rides, however, aren’t based on the original trilogy, like the first Star Tours attraction was (or, even, the attraction’s refurb that integrated the later-released prequels); this land will be firmly rooted in the newest, still-ongoing trilogy – so expect storylines and characters to call back to The Force AwakensEpisode VIII: The Last Jedi (which came out last year), or the still-untitled Episode IX (which lands in December 2019).

Animal Kingdom

Moreso than Epcot, Animal Kingdom provides a number of experiences and areas that are connected to characters from popular movies. From Up to A Bug’s Life, Finding Nemo to Dinosaur, several intellectual properties are featured throughout the park. However, there’s only two you really need to focus on:

The Lion King (1994)

The Lion King
Apparently, the secret to life is that if you eat enough bugs, you won’t worry about anything

Super-short film summary: Hamlet for kids!

Festival of the Lion King
If you miss this show, did you even really go to Animal Kingdom?

Why watch? The Lion King is arguably one of the top three Disney animated classics of all time. Not to be outdone, Festival of the Lion King is arguably the best show on property. Performing songs from the classic film while infusing choreography and stunt work, a troupe of humans and animals wow guests of all ages. If you haven’t seen this show yet, definitely make this a must-do the next time you take a trip to the House of Mouse.

Avatar (2009)

Avatar characters
THEY HAVE… tails. The Na’vi have tails, and that is all

Super-short film summary: Smurfs + Pocahontas = highest-grossing film ever.

Pandora at night
Seeing Pandora during the day is incredible, but, at night, it’s breathtaking

Why watch? Avatar, although not a Disney film (yet), is a movie that has inspired the biggest change to the park in its 20-year existence. Pandora: The World of Avatar opened last year and is regarded as one of the most immersive theme-park environments yet. However, if you’re unaware of some of the story elements that goes into the land, you may not have as much fun or be confused by the bioluminescence, blue people, or the tree that squirts water on you (actually, that one still confuses me). The isolated area is home to two rides, a merchandise location, and quick-service dining, so study up.

Depending on your hierarchy of vacationing, food quality and selection is probably one of the top considerations when planning a trip. Although Universal Orlando has received praise most recently with its theme park food (i.e. Butterbeer, Krusty Burgers… basically anything Wizarding World– or Simpsons-related), it’s Walt Disney World that still carries the title of best food overall.

With that said, why, exactly, is it the best? Well, let’s take a look at five restaurants that blow our minds.

1. Monsieur Paul

Monsieur Paul dining rool
No talking candlesticks, but you won’t mind (photo: Disney)

The only restaurant to make our list that is actually in-park, Monsieur Paul is an upgrade to an already-impressive dining experience. Located behind Chefs de France in the France Pavilion at Epcot, Monsieur Paul provides luxury in ambiance, service, and, yes, menu offerings. Try ordering (and pronouncing) the Pavé de Flétan Poché (butter-poached Halibut) or the Filet de Boeuf Grillé (grilled beef tenderloin).

Reservations are hard to come by, and this is just one reason why (photo: Disney)

A Prix Fixe three-course menu is also available to those not looking to dine à la carte. After dinner, you can take a slow walk around World Showcase, ride Living with the Land, or catch IllumiNations: Reflections of Earth.

2. Victoria and Albert’s

Victoria and Alberts at Disney World
This is definitely bucket-list worthy (photo: Disney)

Hardcore Disney World fans knew it was only a matter of time before this restaurant showed up on the list. For those who have never heard the name before, Victoria and Albert’s is the only AAA Five Diamond dining experience in Orlando (and only one of three in Florida)! Located in Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort and Spa, Victoria and Albert’s offers an experience that is second to none in Central Florida.

Friendly reminder: licking the screen does nothing (photo: Disney)

With dishes like Miyazaki Japanese Beef and Seared Maine Diver Scallop with Roasted Cauliflower, along with the intimate elegance that the restaurant exudes, it’s evident that this isn’t your average dinner spot. If the flavors and the ambiance don’t drive that home, the price will. Want to really live like royalty? Spring for the exclusive Chef’s Table, where a 10-course tasting menu with wine pairings will run you over $400 a person.

3. California Grill

California Grill menu
The obligatory “I’m about to have a better night than you are” picture

Without a doubt my favorite restaurant on property, California Grill is set atop the 15th story of Disney’s Contemporary Resort. Boasting a seasonal menu, incredible sushi, and breathtaking views of the Seven Seas Lagoon/Magic Kingdom area, this spot is perfect for almost any occasion.

Dragon Roll at California Grill
If you think you’ve had a Dragon Roll before, think again (photo: Disney)

Arguably the most impressive draw to California Grill, however, is that it offers its guests a one-of-a-kind view of the Magic Kingdom fireworks display. If you plan well, you might even get to experience perimeter fireworks from the unique vantage point. Talk about the ultimate dinner and a show.

4. Yachtsman Steakhouse

Yachtsman Steakhouse
Yo ho, yo ho steak (photo: Disney)

Some days call for a great steak, and when those days come calling, Yachtsman Steakhouse has you covered. Fiercely compared by some to Epcot’s Le Cellier Steakhouse, Yachtsman actually ranks higher on the Zagat survey for food and service.

Don’t even think about putting A-1 on this (photo: Disney)

From Waygu Strip Loin to Prime Ribeye Steak and a Porterhouse cut for two, Yachtsman is a beef lover’s paradise. Located at Disney’s Yacht Club Resort, this top pick is conveniently located next to Epcot and Disney’s Boardwalk, which solves the age-old question, “what do you want to do after dinner?”

5. Capa

Capa at the Four Seasons
How to impress a date in 60 seconds or less (photo: Four Seasons Orlando)

If you thought California Grill was next-level dining, you haven’t met the new kid on the block. Nestled atop the Four Seasons Resort Orlando at Walt Disney World is Capa, the hotel’s Spanish steakhouse. Seventeen floors up, this is the highest full restaurant on Disney World property. Being that high up does have its advantages – namely, views of Epcot, Hollywood Studios, and Contemporary Resort/Magic Kingdom. If you plan correctly (or just have dumb luck, like we did), you can enjoy bits of each of the three parks’ firework spectaculars at the same time.

Capa at the Four Seasons Orlando
This could be you! You know, with a reservation (photo: Four Seasons Orlando)

Outside of the view, Capa boasts a diverse and exotic menu with flavors supported by a wine list that has earned the restaurant a spot on the Top 100 Wine Restaurants in the US by Wine Enthusiast magazine. Enjoy Cangrejo (king crab) from the raw bar or an Iberico Pork Chop from the grill. Whatever you pick, the food is sure to be as unforgettable as the view.

We all love the theme parks – it’s our little slice of escapism and joy right here in the heart of Florida. As fun as the parks are, however, sometimes you need an escape from your escape. Next time you’re looking for Universal-style fun with a twist, give one of these a try…

1. Check out the pool

The pool at Cabana Bay Beach Resort
Come on in, the water’s fine

On-site resort guests get access to not only their hotel pool, but the other pools, as well. Not sure which one is going to be your favorite? Try them all out in a day-long pool adventure.

2. Galaxy Bowl at Cabana Bay Beach Resort

Galaxy Bowl at Cabana Bay
We won’t judge if you use the bumpers

Check out Universal Orlando Resort’s only bowling alley, located at Cabana Bay. If you work up an appetite (or thirst), there’s an attached restaurant and bar area. Plus, cosmic bowling takes place at night!

3. Kitchen Challenge at Hard Rock Hotel

Think you have a big enough stomach? (photo: Universal Orlando Resort)

One pound of fries, a giant bacon-and-fried-onion-topped cheeseburger, one whole fried pickle, and a three-pound slice of cake make up this food lover’s dream/nightmare. To take part in the challenge officially, the meal must be completed within 30 minutes.

(More on Hard Rock Hotel.)

4. Musical della Notte at Portofino Bay Hotel

Every night around sundown, listen to live entertainment serenade you from the Portofino Bay Piazza. If you’re 21 and over, enjoy a drink from The Thirsty Fish during the performance.

(More on Portofino Bay Hotel.)

5. Get a taste of Volcano Bay with the Cabana Bay lazy river

After playing in Cabana Bay Beach Resort’s two pools, relax at the hotel’s very own lazy river. Cabana Bay is the only on-site hotel with its own lazy river (and bowling alley), which makes it a must-visit.

6. Play 18 holes at Hollywood Drive-In Golf

Choose between The Haunting of Ghostly Greens or Invaders of Planet Putt for a great time for all ages at CityWalk. Can’t make up your mind? Opt for a double feature and enjoy both courses.

7. Spend some time at Pat O’Brien’s

Pat O'Brien's at Universal CityWalk
Dueling pianos are always a good decision

Enjoy a famous Pat O’Brien’s Hurricane while listening to dueling pianos play hits from various genres. Have a request? Make sure to roll up a tip with your request sheet to help guarantee you’ll hear it.

8. Pamper yourself at Portofino Bay Hotel’s Mandara Spa

Relax with a Balinese massage or a Mandara signature facial. The spa also comes complete with a fitness center for those who are looking to stay in shape.

9. Experience Sapphire Falls’s Caribbean Carnaval

Caribbean Carnaval at Sapphire Falls
Believe it or not, this is a dining experience

Enjoy all-you-can-eat (and drink) food at this dinner show that brings the sounds and energy of the Caribbean to life. Check out our exclusive review of this weekly offering for more.

10. Try a rum tasting at Sapphire Falls Resort’s Strong Water Tavern

This guy knows what he’s doing

One of Universal’s newer on-site hotels is home to a rum tasting that starts at $18 and features three different samplings from all over the world. Request to sit at the Rum Lab for a more in-depth experience.

February 17 through April 15, 2018, guests visiting SeaWorld Orlando can take part in the returning Seven Seas Food Festival.

The festival, in its sophomore year at the park, is designed to offer guests an expanded selection of unique tastes. Touting over 180 items, including specialty food, brews, wine, and spirits, the food festival is spread across the park in 35 locations. And if the food weren’t enough, SeaWorld is bringing a number of bands to help entertain the feasting fans. Currently, the performance schedule looks like this:

 • 2/17 – Bachman and Turner
 • 2/18 – Larry the Cable Guy
 • 2/24 – Jacksons
 • 3/3 – Huey Lewis & the News
 • 3/4 – Chris Young
 • 3/10 – Daughtry

Additional performances – Eli Young Band and El Gran Combo, for example – have also been teased.

During a media preview that was held last night, we sampled bites inspired by cultures worldwide. A favorite among the crowd was the new Bacon-Wrapped Sweet Plantain ($4.99) from the Brazillian Market; the snack may sound like two tastes that really don’t go together – until you remember that bacon goes with everything.

Bacon Wrapped Plantains from SeaWorld
Plantains? Great. Bacon? Awesome. Together? The taste you never knew you needed

The Shrimp Mac and Cheese ($6.49) from the Florida Market is also a fun treat if you’re looking for something small but hearty. Want something fresh instead? The new Crab Cake ($6.49) from the Carribean Market is definitely worth a try.

Crab Cake from SeaWorld
Licking the screen will not work, so don’t even try it

On the sweeter side of things, the Dark Chocolate Guinness Mousse Parfait topped with Baileys-Infused Whipped Cream ($4.49) from the Mediterranean Market is a solid choice, while the Key Lime Martini ($4.49) from the Florida Market is less of one. Key Lime lovers may be thrown off by the dessert’s sweetness instead of the traditional creamy tart that’s expected.

If you’re looking for a refreshing dessert to help beat the heat, the Hawaiian Pineapple Dream Cake ($4.49) from the Polynesian Market is served chilled.

Hawaiian Pineapple Dream Cake from SeaWorld
We swear we’re not trying to make you hungry

One of the unique things that separates the Seven Seas Food Festival from events like Epcot’s Food and Wine Festival is the option to pre-pay for the dishes and drinks you’re interested in trying: the Food and Beverage Sampling Lanyard allows the purchaser to enjoy five, eight, or 15 food and drink samples for a flat rate. Packages range from $30 to $60, and the lanyard is valid for the entire run of the event. If you’re a SeaWorld annual passholder, this lanyard is a fantastic idea; with food and beverage pricing ranging from $3.99 to $9.99, and depending on how often you visit, the lanyard can save you money by dropping the average cost per item. For example:

 • A five-punch Sampling Lanyard averages each selection to $6
 • An eight-punch Sampling Lanyard averages each selection to $5
 • A 15-punch Sampling Lanyard averages each selection to $4

And did we mention it works on any food, craft brew, wine, or specialty-drink sample option? Yeah, it’s a decent deal.

SeaWorld’s Seven Seas Food Fest runs weekends through April 15th.

Like we explained yesterday in another post, Valentine’s Day is a hard holiday. The expectation, the hurdles, the trouble – it can be incredibly overwhelming for even the most well-intentioned person. Fortunately, out of all of the Central Florida hotspots, Universal Orlando Resort makes it incredibly easy to “win” Valentine’s Day.

What makes Universal Cupid’s favorite stomping grounds? One of the most diverse experience offerings and a general disregard for reservations make the resort guest- and (we hope!) romance-friendly.

So, how can you win Valentine’s Day? We break down five life scenarios to give you the inside track.

1. The first date

A first date is never easy (or, at least, it never starts off that way). Add to that the stress and expectation of a first date on V-Day, and you’ve got a whole new ballgame. Fortunately, Universal is built for just such an undertaking.

Break the ice at Islands of Adventure and see who screams louder when riding The Incredible Hulk Coaster. From there, continue your park lap into The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Hogsmeade (insert “where the magic begins” joke here). Once you’ve completed your time in-park, it’s on to CityWalk for dinner. Toothsome Chocolate Emporium and Savory Feast Kitchen is a fun environment with a diverse menu, sure to please even the pickiest of eaters.

After you’ve split a milkshake for dessert, head over to Hollywood Drive-In Golf to play 18 at one of two incredibly well-themed mini-golf courses.

Not ready for the night to end? Head over to The Groove and dance until it’s time to go.

2. The lovers

You’ve had your first date and a few after that. Life is pretty incredible. You look at your significant other and you know that it’s only a matter of time before s/he is yours forever. Simply put, you want this one to count.

The fun for you starts at Universal Studios Florida, where you challenge each other to Men in Black: Alien Attack (the winner gets a massage at the end of the night). After you’ve walked around the lagoon and stolen a few glances, it’s time for dinner.

The outside of Emeril's Orlando
BAM!

Emeril’s is the only restaurant in CityWalk that requires reservations, but it’s one you should attempt to get into. If Emeril’s is booked up, head up the road to Antojitos Authentic Mexican Food for tableside guacamole and handcrafted margaritas. Wrap up the evening in each other’s arms while the dueling piano team at Pat O’Brien’s serenades you.

3. The married couple

Mr. and Mrs. has a nice ring to it (no pun intended), and life has been good. Before kids come into play, you want to make sure you have made memories that will last the rest of your life. Start with a glass of wine at Portofino Bay Hotel as you take in the incredible view and ambiance of Universal’s most luxurious hotel.

Exterior of the Portofino Bay Hotel
Questa visione impallidisce in confronto a te, amore mio

From there, walk down the garden path to Hard Rock Hotel, where your dinner at The Palm will be sure to be unforgettable. Heading back into CityWalk, you talk about stopping off at Rising Star (you’ve heard it’s fun), but you have a curveball up your sleeve – you both walk to Sapphire Falls Resort, where you have a nightcap at Strong Water Tavern. It’s there that you surprise your loved one with a room for the evening to end your perfect night.

4. Married with children

You think about that last date night you two had alone and can’t help but smile… that is, until you feel a tugging on your leg. “I need to go to the bathroom!” Sighing but still smiling at the same time, you grab your child’s hand and walk him to the restroom in The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Diagon Alley. Tonight is the first Valentine’s Day you and your partner are getting alone in years (thanks, Grandpa!), and neither of you is letting it go to waste. As soon as grandpa and your little one(s) are gone, it’s over to NBC Sports Grill & Brew for an early dinner.

Inside of Rising Star
Ready or not, you’ve got next

Beelining to AMC CityWalk, you sit down eagerly to a movie that doesn’t involve a talking mouse or yellow tic-tacs. After that, it’s on to Rising Star to finally check that off your list. You both sip on your drinks while dancing along to the band playing when it hits you both – you smile at each other, kiss, and know that you’ve made it.

5. The bachelor/bachelorette

You’ve got your entire life ahead of you, and you know that. Today is just another day, but your friends have made it feel like such a big deal. So you’ve decided to have a night on the town with them to show you’re fine all by yourself.

Fat Tuesday frozen daiquiris cart.
Frozen daiquiris are the quintessential good decision/bad decision

Fat Tuesday kicks off the night while you walk around CityWalk planning your evening. Your walk is cut short by the fun look of the Lone Palm Airport, and you decide to grab dinner there. While eating your meal, you have an important decision to make: singing or dancing? Whatever you decide, that’s your next move. Head over to Rising Star or Red Coconut Club and close the place down.

BONUS: The divorcee

Lone Palm Airport at Margaritaville
As some people have claimed, there’s always a woman (or man) to blame

We’re sorry! Congrats! Feel free to use whatever response is applicable. To help smooth over this rough patch, we’ve built up a list of drinks that might make the day more tolerable:

(Please don’t forget to drink responsibly!)

February 14th – arguably one of, if not the, most contentious commercial holidays around. If you’re in a relationship, it’s a day filled with expectation and pressure; if you’re single, it’s a day of irritation and bitterness. Regardless of what side of the rose you fall on, though, you can still have an amazing day.

So whether you’re in a relationship or running solo this year, let’s take a look at the seven ways you can have your best Valentine’s Day at Walt Disney World.

For the lovebirds

If you’re in love and looking for a day sure to impress, these three ideas will knock your partner’s socks off.

1. Dinner at California Grill

Nothing says “take their breath away” quite like dinner at the Contemporary Resort’s most notable restaurant. Taking up the 15th floor, this exclusive restaurant is only accessible via private elevator. It features a seasonal menu, with noteworthy sushi and an impressive wine list.

Sushi at the California Grill
We know what you’re thinking and the answer is no, you can’t live here. (photo: Disney)

However, the true magic lies in the view. Schedule your meal wisely, and you could finish just in time to catch Magic Kingdom’s Happily Ever After fireworks extravaganza (if you have an earlier reservation, you can always come back with your receipt). It’s a view that will make you fall in love, in more ways than one.

2. Wine Walk at Epcot

Have some extra time (and cash)? Epcot offers guests the opportunity to travel the world and experience a variety of cultures for one price in the Epcot Wine Walk. For $32, a guest is given a passport that entitles her to six two-ounce pours of wine across three participating locations: Germany’s Weinkeller, Italy’s La Bottega Italia, and France’s Aux Vins de France.

France Pavilion at Epcot
Valentine’s Day + Disney + Paris?! This may be too much. (photo: Disney)

Can’t finish all of your entitlements in one day? As the French say, pas de soucis (no problem) – you can always come back to drink them up later.

3. Stroll along the Disney Boardwalk

The Disney Boardwalk provides you with a choose-your-own-adventure-style of experience. Consisting of dining and entertainment options (such as bike rentals) that are all set around an intimate lake environment, the Boardwalk can easily become a half-day excursion. Walk along the waterfront hand in hand, grab a drink at AbracadaBar and dinner at Cape May Cafe, and wrap up with dessert at Beaches and Cream – it’s a night that will ooze romance all by itself.

“Do you believe in magic? I didn’t until I saw you…” – the worst pickup line ever (photo: Disney)

Ice cream too vanilla for you? End the night with dancing at the Atlantic Dance Hall or finish up with a cocktail at Jellyrolls, Disney World’s only dueling-piano bar.

For the bachelor and bachelorettes

Today isn’t just for those in love – it’s also a great excuse to get out and have some fun.

4. Bongos at Disney Springs

Immerse yourself in the Cuban spirit at the Disney Springs cafe owned by Gloria and Emilio Estefan. Enjoy live entertainment, dancing, and an authentic menu while sipping on a Luxury Mojito. From there, you can take a stroll around Disney Springs and catch all the live music, or hop across the street and take in a movie at AMC Disney Springs.

5. Community table at Trader Sam’s Grog Grotto

Inspired by the “head” salesman that can be found on the world-famous Jungle Cruise, Trader Sam’s Grog Grotto at Polynesian Resort is arguably the best-themed bar on property. The bar stools sink, each specialty drink comes with its own gag, and the bartenders are as personable as the attraction’s skippers.

Trader Sam's Grog Grotto
Sometimes you wanna go where everybody is a tourist. (photo: Disney)

One of Sam’s best-kept secrets is actually its biggest – the center table. Most people consider that a table for large parties looking to relax when, in fact, its primary purpose was to serve as a community table for multiple parties. So, instead of swiping right, actually turn to your right and introduce yourself to the person sitting next to you. It’ll make for an interesting – dare we say extraordinary? – night.

6. Drinking around the (Epcot) world

This should be your break-glass-in-case-of-emergency plan, and, in all good consciousness, we can’t recommend this one unless you’re with friends. Drinking around the world at Epcot has been a challenge that many have attempted and few have completed. However, if done responsibly and properly, it could go down in history as one of your best Valentine’s Days ever. Eleven countries, 11 drinks… think you’re up for the challenge?

Mexico Pavilion at Epcot
Pro tip: if you’re going to attempt this, start here.

(That’s a trick question – Valentine’s Day is on a Wednesday this year. If you’re seriously considering this, wait until Saturday and text your friends. Unless you’re on vacation – in which case, go nuts… but please drink responsibly)

Fun for anyone and everyone

Whether you’re with that special someone or with a bunch of special someones, there’s always one thing that brings everyone together:

Photo of two people enjoying a drink at Splitsville in Disney Springs.
Bowling and billiards and fish bowls – oh, my! (photo: Disney)

7. Splitsville at Disney Springs

It doesn’t matter if you’re single or taken – bowling is a social activity that works for most. Splitsville is a restaurant, bar, and bowling alley all rolled into one, which could cover all your bases at the same time. Not feeling the menu? Enjoy an hour on a lane and then head down the road to one of Disney Springs’s newest restaurants.

Sponsored Post: our friends at The Escape Game asked us to write this. Prior to any communication, we were big fans and had already completed every escape room that they offer in Orlando.

I love the parks – they were what brought me to Florida in the first place. But after six years and countless visits, I just last year started to yearn for a new experience. Enter escape rooms, the new entertainment craze that has become a favorite for weekend game nights, double-date nights, and team-bonding exercises. Taylor, Zoey, Matt, and I tried our first escape room last April. Since then, we’ve done 30 of the experiences across the Central Florida area. Yeah, I know – we’re obsessed.

What is great about escape rooms is that they usually have all of the storytelling and theming you have come to love and expect from the parks, but with tons of interactivity. You are immersed in an environment where you can actually touch the props. Now, with that comes a new standard and a new level of expectation. It’s not like a ride experience, where you can say, “Well, the story was rough, but the ride was exciting.” With escape rooms, every aspect of the experience plays into another, and all need to be equally strong in order to make it worth your time and money.

In Orlando, one of the escape rooms that provide that kind of strong experience time after time is The Escape Game Orlando. Recently recognized by TripAdvisor as the number-one escape-room company in the country (as well as the number-one escape room in Orlando), TEGO is my overall favorite experience in town. (True story: when we were first approached to cover The Escape Game, we had already tried – and completed! – all five rooms.)

Why we love The Escape Game Orlando

So, what makes TEGO worth your time and money? Simply put, they are masters at crafting a memorable experience each time. Each of the five rooms they offer is designed with meticulous detail and comes complete with a story that puts you and your team’s mind into the heart of the action. I’ve experienced escape rooms that will cheat the environment by throwing up a wall decal meant to look like a bookcase, or – my personal unfavorite – put you in the criminal mastermind’s leisure room that wouldn’t pass for a five-year-old’s game room. At Escape Game Orlando, the environment is key in fully immersing the player in the story. No shortcut has been made or expense overlooked to provide incredibly rich and detailed environments – for one of my personal favorite games, The Heist, they even had two custom-made busts created and sent over from Greece!

Even when a room doesn’t call for traditional theming, the team figures out how to make it work. I remember being hesitant about trying Mission: Mars because one of their game guides had explained earlier that, “It’s our newest and most technologically-advanced game – it’s almost all screen-based.” Being someone who is a huge fan of the practical sets and effects that the other four rooms showcased, I thought my enjoyment would take a hit. Simply put, I was wrong. The room is one of the most unique I’ve ever played in, and it employs games and scenarios that are cutting-edge to the industry.

Mission: Mars Escape Room
Mission: Mars combines new and classic concepts for a great experience

Story is equally important, and, in my experience, some escape rooms like to start with elaborate narrative set-ups that can be hard to keep in mind, let alone actually grow upon you in the hour you have in a room; what starts out being a well-intended amplifier becomes a tragic detractor. Each story at TEGO gives you enough to put you and your team’s mind into the spirit of the game without getting overly confusing. You’re able to enjoy the story, the environment, and your team without losing your mind for an hour over how Clarabell knows Clarence and if they knew anything about the Scroll of Tosika.

The staff rounds out the experience, making great game guides. Never played an escape room before? Your game guide will monitor your progress via camera and microphone and offer help should you request it (your team gets three clues!). In every experience we had with The Escape Game, our guide was incredibly personable and helpful. They became the Charlie to our Angels and enhanced our games for the better.

All in all, The Escape Game Orlando is a great escape-room experience for die-hard fans and first-timers alike. If you’re looking to try something new, or hoping to escape (pun 50% intended) the busy theme-park crowds, you’ll want to book this I-Drive must-do.

Our Escape Game Orlando rankings

Madison Korn is an avid theme-park and escape-room fan. Taylor Strickland is the owner of Orlando Informer. Together with Matt Korn and Zoey Masters, they have completed 30 escape rooms. So how did the rooms at TEGO rank?

Madison’s rankings:

 1. Gold Rush
 2. Mission: Mars
 3. The Heist
 4. Prison Break
 5. Classified

Gold Rush is my go-to for newcomers and veterans alike. The rooms are incredibly well-themed, are played out on several levels (figuratively and literally), and have games and surprises that are sure to get everyone in the group having fun. If you have to do only one, I highly recommend it.

Taylor’s rankings:

 1. Mission: Mars
 2. Gold Rush
 3. The Heist
 4. Prison Break
 5. Classified

I really love Mission: Mars because of the technology and approach behind it. There’s a part of the scenario that really gets your blood pumping, and, for me, it’s the most memorable experience I’ve ever had in an escape room.

Our Escape Game Orlando insider tips

So, how can you master the fun of your escape room experience?

Madison’s top tips:

 • Escape rooms generally have a higher capacity than the party you show up with, which results in you getting paired with another group during the experience. For some people, that’s not a big deal. If you’re not a fan of making fast friends, though, consider getting a large group of acquaintances together before booking a room (or book an empty room minutes before its scheduled start time).
 • Make sure you get your entire team on board with using a hint before asking for one; hints are ultimately what keep you from failing when you’ve hit a wall but should be used sparingly, due to the limited number given.

Taylor’s top tips:

 • Designate an area of the room for used or discarded items and, once you’ve opened a lock or used a prop, put them there. It will help keep you organized so you can focus on the next puzzle!
 • Double check every inch of the room before asking for a hint – you never know if there’s a small key or clue hiding in plain sight.

The Escape Game Orlando pricing, depending on experience, ranges from $31.99 to $37.99. For more on Escape Game Orlando, including how to make reservations, please visit their site.
