Orlando is famous for its theme parks and tourist destinations. When friends and family hear you’re heading for the City Beautiful, they often assume you’re Disney-bound or hitting up The Wizarding World of Harry Potter. They picture character dining and roller coasters and white, sandy beaches.

But there is another type of park many visitors don’t know about: Wild Florida. This incredible place celebrates a different type of magic – not castles and fireworks, but Everglades and exotic wildlife. With over 200 animals in their natural habitat, an incredible restaurant, and multiple venues to host your next special event, Wild Florida truly has it all.

So, then, let’s start exploring! Find out why you should add this incredible wildlife park to your next vacation itinerary.

1. Airboat tours

Airboat tours at Wild Florida

There is nothing quite like sailing along a marshland waterway, experiencing the natural Florida ecosystem right from within. On these Coast Guard-approved airboat tours, you can see native wildlife and foliage up close, with the wind in your hair and the river beneath your feet. The captains are trained to spot everything from gators to eagles, all to help you have the best airboat experience you can!

All airboat tour tickets include admission to the Gator Park and the hands-on alligator demonstration. Whether you choose to join a tour with strangers, book your own private boat ride (four-person minimum), or, even, hit the water at night for a whole new view of the swamp, you’re sure to have the adventure of a lifetime.

2. The Gator Park

Gator Park at Wild Florida

It’s not just gators that thrive in the warm, sub-tropical climate of Central Florida – over 200 species of local and exotic wildlife make their home in this incredible park, and this is your chance to get up close and personal with all of them! You can explore the habitats of lemurs and zebras and talk to the animal care team about what it’s really like to work with such amazing creatures.

You can visit the petting zoo, perfect for the younger children in your family, or you can take a peaceful stroll through the Hawk Swamp and look for roosting owls in the shade of the cypress trees. There is no better place to make a connection with these creatures we share our planet with – or to become a part of the conservation efforts to keep them thriving.

3. Animal encounters

Animal encounters at Wild Florida

If you’re not local to Orlando, there’s a chance you’ve lived in fear of the gators that theoretically run wild here in Central Florida. And while they are definitely deserving of their space, gaining a better understanding of these local beasts is a great experience for anyone. Not only can you go behind-the-scenes with these gators in an amazing, educational demonstration, but you can do yoga or paint alongside adorable sloths! You can even become an animal keeper for a day, if you’d prefer.

From tours to feeding and training, your day is never boring when you’re hanging around with lemurs and porcupines. Whether you choose to watch from afar or dine with a gator as your companion, these animals are sure to bring you a vacation you’ll never forget.

4. The Chomp House Grill

An all-day adventure wouldn’t be complete without an incredible meal. Be sure to cool off in this on-site restaurant with its taste of the swamp. Dig into a plate of smoked barbecue or mouth-watering pulled pork. Try some local catfish or, even, gator, if you’re feeling brave. With beautiful indoor or outdoor dining options, feel free to kick back and relax for as long as you like, and be sure to make room for dessert!

Theme parks can be a glorious way to spend your vacation, but there are other riches to be found here in Orlando. Wild Florida promises a lifetime of excitement and keeps its visitors coming back for more. Consider hosting your next birthday party, corporate event, or your outdoor wedding at this slice of natural paradise.

And if you’re visiting later this year, you’re in luck – opening in fall of 2019 is Wild Florida’s brand-new drive-through safari park! We don’t know much yet, but we can’t wait to experience it for ourselves. We hope to see you there, adventurers!

In the meantime, discuss this and all the other exciting Orlando experiences you have in addition to the theme parks in our OI Community Facebook group. And also be sure to follow Orlando Informer on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram for the latest news and tips at Universal Orlando, Walt Disney World, and other Orlando destinations.

There’s nothing quite like stepping through the turnstiles at your favorite theme park. You’ve planned your vacation for months and finally arrived in sunny Orlando! Whether you stay for a day or a week, there’s plenty of fun to be had for the whole family.

But then, eventually, it’s time to head home again. What do you do when you’re craving that theme-park energy but you don’t have another vacation planned for several months? How do you keep yourself going through the day-to-day mundane of your office job, or keep the kids excited about the next trip?

Well, I’ve got your at-home guide for getting that Universal fix! It’s almost as good as being there.

1. Universal’s online shop

Universal Orlando's online store
Universal Orlando’s online store

Of course, there’s no thrill quite like souvenir shopping while you’re on vacation. But, sometimes, you get home and realize you should have picked up that extra sweater – or, perhaps, you didn’t have room in your luggage for everything you wanted to buy. That’s where Universal’s online store comes in extremely handy!

From Harry Potter collectibles and treats to t-shirts featuring your favorite characters, you can have all the fun of the Universal parks mailed right to your doorstep. Be sure to take advantage of their bulk orders of Chocolate Frogs! They come in packs of four and are guaranteed to contain one each of the Hogwarts house founder cards: Godric Gryffindor, Salazar Slytherin, Rowena Ravenclaw, and Helga Hufflepuff.

2. DIY Universal Orlando treats

Starbuckcs Butterbeer Frappuccino
Starbuckcs Butterbeer Frappuccino (image: StarbucksSecretMenu.net)

Whether you prefer your Butterbeer ice cold, frozen, or (my personal favorite) piping hot, there’s a copycat recipe just ready for you to try at home. The internet is practically flooded with them! They may not taste exactly the same as they do in The Wizarding World of Harry Potter, but they may be just sweet enough to keep you going until your next trip.

Speaking of things that keep you going, did you know there’s a Starbucks Butterbeer Frappuccino? It’s not on their official menu, but you can have it made special the next time you’re getting your morning caffeine fix. Just ask for a Creme Frappuccino base with three pumps of toffee nut syrup and three pumps of caramel syrup, and top it all off with a caramel drizzle! If you want it to look particularly magical, ask your barista to line the cup with caramel drizzle, too. It tastes like what I’d imagine Hogwarts students drink while they’re cramming for finals. And it is divine.

3. Universal movie magic

Fathom Events
Fathom Events’s logo

We’re all aware of the big streaming services: Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime (and, soon, Disney+). You can usually find your favorite Universal Studios films on one of these platforms, if not all of them! (Well, except for Disney’s.) You can visit canistream.it to find out exactly where your movies are playing on the internet. However, streaming can get a bit tricky when your favorite service stops carrying a certain title. Besides, we already watch so much TV and movies inside our homes these days, why not get a little creative?

Since movie theaters started struggling with the introduction of streaming, they’ve found interesting ways to keep fans coming back. One of my favorites is hosted by Fathom Events. At participating theaters – be they AMC, Cinemark, or Regal locations – you can regularly find your favorite classics returning to the big screen for one night only, including fan favorites from inside the Universal parks. So, check your local movie theater and take part in the movie magic! Because there’s nothing quite like seeing Jaws or The Mummy back on the big screen again.

4. Dining out, Universal-style

Hard Rock Cafe at Universal CityWalk Orlando.
Hard Rock really does mean “all” – across the country

There are, of course, many restaurants within the Universal parks that are exclusive – you can’t find The Three Broomsticks outside of The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Hogsmeade, and you won’t be able to eat at Toothsome Chocolate Emporium and Savory Feast Kitchen anywhere but Orlando. However, many of your CityWalk favorites or in-park snacks can be found right in your hometown.

Most of the Voodoo Doughnut locations are in Oregon or Colorado, but you can also find one in Texas, as well as at the CityWalk in California. Auntie Anne’s and Dippin’ Dots are also extremely popular chains, with locations all over the country. As for the rest, I’m sure you can track down a Cinnabon, Panda Express, or Hard Rock Cafe near you!

The magic of the Universal theme parks is often indescribable and impossible to truly replicate. However, that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t enjoy yourself between trips. Take advantage of these handy tips to get your fix – at least, until the next time we see you.

And until then, share your own personal Universal Orlando fixes with 80,000+ other vacation-planners in our OI Community Facebook group. Additionally, make sure you follow Orlando Informer on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram for the latest news and tips at Universal Orlando, Walt Disney World, and other Orlando experiences.

8 reasons you have to visit The Florida Mall https://orlandoinformer.com/blog/reasons-should-visit-the-florida-mall/ Thu, 03 Oct 2019 15:48:04 +0000 https://orlandoinformer.com/?p=115398 When I first moved to Orlando in 2012, it was common knowledge that The Florida Mall was the less-desirable shopping destination among our local options. ... The post 8 reasons you have to visit The Florida Mall appeared first on Orlando Informer.

]]>
When I first moved to Orlando in 2012, it was common knowledge that The Florida Mall was the less-desirable shopping destination among our local options. Compared to places like Mall at Millennia, Florida Mall was generally considered less-attractive, “sketchier,” and often not worth the time.

However, in the last few years, there have been major changes to not only the layout as a whole, but the mall’s available amenities and shopping options, as well, as the management and owners have gone above and beyond to improve the entire area. Now, here are just a few of the reasons why The Florida Mall has become an incredible place for all of your shopping, dining, and entertainment needs!

1. Valet parking

Valet at The Florida Mall
Valet at The Florida Mall

Originally meant to be a special offering during the holiday rush, valet parking is now a full-time perk of shopping at Florida Mall. At only $10 for the entire day, valet is one of the simplest ways to start your trip off relaxed and ready. No more driving around in circles, looking for an empty space. No more hiking in the Orlando sun, lugging your heavy shopping bags. Instead, you can simply drop off your vehicle and text when you’re ready to pick it back up again! (Pay on your phone when you request the car, including tip.)

Parking has never been easier. (And, as a bonus, if you have an electric car, they have specialty charging stations now available!)

2. The dining pavilion

Lemon Shark Poke at The Florida Mall

“Food courts” are so last year – instead, stop by The Florida Mall’s dining pavilion! It may have all the food-court classics, but it also has so much more.

From fresh smoothies and acai bowls to an indoor grilled-chicken food truck, you can find anything your stomach desires. Try the latest trend in raw fish with Lemon Shark Poke, or build your own perfect pasta at Spoleto. After your meal, be sure to stop by Carlo’s Bake Shop, where the lines alone are a testament to the bakery’s popularity.

3. Unique eateries

Sushi Yummy at The Florida Mall
Sushi Yummy at The Florida Mall

If nothing in the pavilion itself tickles your fancy, don’t worry! That’s just the beginning of the many amazing food options in The Florida Mall. Not only can you find a Buca di Beppo further in (one of only three locations in all of Florida), but also sweet and delightful finds like a gourmet churro shop and an entire kiosk dedicated to tiramisu.

My personal favorite, however, is Sushi Yummy: a conveyor-belt sushi restaurant right at the heart of the mall. Pre-made plates roll by you, color-coded by price, so you can grab whatever roll or appetizer catches your eye. It’s a unique experience, unlike any other sushi place in town.

No matter what you’re craving, I guarantee you can find it!

4. The Florida Hotel

Whether you’re in town for a night or a weekend, there’s something spectacularly convenient about a hotel that is attached to the mall. No more being a slave to room service for your dinner. No more relying on the hotel gift shop for your souvenirs. From business conventions to nerd events that are an absolute blast, there’s more than enough to set this lovely hotel apart from the rest of Orlando’s options. Here, you get the whole package!

5. Package pickup

Speaking of packages, let me share my favorite little-known secret about The Florida Mall: their complimentary package check. I don’t know about you, but I tend to shop a lot in malls. It’s great to have the variety, but the bag count can stack up fast – and, if you’ve valeted, it’s hard to get to your car and stow the loot sometimes. That’s why package check is incredible and makes you feel just a bit fancier.

Just head to one of the two locations: near The Florida Hotel or in front of Macy’s. They’ll hold anything you need and give you a ticket for pickup, freeing up your hands for even more retail therapy.

6. The Crayola Experience

Crayola Experience at The Florida Mall

For my 25th birthday, my roommate surprised me by taking me to the Crayola Experience. I had never heard of it before, but I am here to tell you that I, as a fully-grown adult woman, had the absolute time of my life. It is more than shopping – it is an interactive museum celebrating all that crayons can do. It may sound like a simple concept, but if you’re spending the day with your children (or easily amused grown-ups), you can kill hours at Crayola. Make your own melted crayon art! Re-discover the joys of coloring outside the lines! From field trips to parties, Crayola Experience is a wonderfully colorful alternative to a normal, boring shopping day.

(If crayons aren’t your cup of tea, there are so many other amazing, fun, interactive installments at The Florida Mall. Tap into your scientific side at The Slime Factory. Let your children roam in the incredible garden-themed play area. Craft your very own stuffed, fuzzy friend at Build-a-Bear. Take your daughter to the American Girl store for an afternoon neither of you will ever forget!)

7. Relaxation

Atomic Tattoos at The Florida Mall

Not only does this mall have multiple spa locations, their services are extremely affordable. No matter what kind of rest and relaxation you’re looking for, there’s something to help you unwind after a whole day of shopping, dining, and exploration – there are nail salons, specializing in everything from simple manicures to full acrylic sets and foot massages. There are table massages, ranging anywhere from 20 minutes (for those shoppers in a hurry) to 90 minutes. You can get your hair cut, colored, or permed at the JCPenney Salon, and, if you’re feeling a little more adventurous, there is even a tattoo parlor in the mall itself!

So treat yourself to a new look, a new feel, or some new ink. You deserve it!

8. Boft Photo Printing

Boft Photo Printing at The Florida Mall
Boft Photo Printing at The Florida Mall

Orlando is a city full of memories and magic. At the end of your trip, no matter how long it might have been, make sure you stop at the Boft photo kiosk in the dining pavilion. Send your favorite Instagram moments directly to the machine and print them on the spot! There’s no better way to immortalize your trip to the parks, the city, or the mall itself.

These are just a few of the amazing ways The Florida Mall has set itself apart, but I could go on. I could praise the all-year Christmas shop or The Winey Wench and their amazing wine slushies. I could tell you about the mini-motion-simulator pods that send you on a whole different kind of adventure or the complimentary wifi and wheelchairs. But, sometimes, discovering these gems on your own is more fun – so be sure to stop by The Florida Mall and find your new favorite store!

Once you do, share your thoughts with 80,000+ other vacation-planners over at our OI Community Facebook group. And also follow Orlando Informer on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram for the latest news and tips at Universal Orlando, Walt Disney World, and other Orlando experiences.

Food. It’s not only necessary for us to survive, but we as humans have turned sustenance into an art form. And then, in an obvious leap from there, we turned it into a sport.

It started off simple: a hot dog- or pie-eating contest here, a milk-chugging challenge there. It took a strange turn at one point, when the internet decided eating Tide Pods as a “challenge” was a smart decision – spoiler alert: it’s not – and then, as with all great sports, we started to televise them. With the rise of the Food Network and the overwhelming popularity of series like The Great British Baking Show, it’s no wonder that spotlights have begun to shine on restaurants around the world, showcasing their own best dishes and insane eating challenges.

Now, it’s time to point one of those spotlights to our very own Hard Rock Hotel in Orlando and The Kitchen Sink Challenge.

The Kitchen

The Kitchen at Hard Rock Hotel
The Kitchen at Hard Rock Hotel

First things first: let’s step into the ring! Welcome to The Kitchen, the delightful restaurant located at Hard Rock Hotel. For all-day dining joy, it’s well worth the visit! Choose from delicious omelettes or a breakfast buffet in the morning. Enjoy their Acoustic Brunch on Sundays, complete with live music and bottomless mimosas! For lunch, you can order The Kitchen Burger without the rest of its challenge buddies, or an incredible pasta dish. Dinner includes mouth-watering options from steak to salmon and everything in between, and you can top it all off with one of their fine wine selections.

Or, if you’re feeling brave, you can do the Challenge.

The Challenge

Kitchen Sink Challenge at The Kitchen
Good luck with that!

In the summer of 2012, Universal’s Hard Rock Hotel launched their Kitchen Sink Challenge. At first glance, it seems simple enough: one burger, a side of fries, a fried pickle, and a single slice of The Kitchen Sink Cake. You just need to finish it all in under 30 minutes. Simple, right?

Wrong. Oh, so very wrong. Not only was it a full year before anyone could defeat the challenge – Nick Ranieri, you are a hero to us all – but, to date, only 12 people have slain the beast. Why is it so difficult? Well, let’s look a little closer at all the pieces of the puzzle.

The Kitchen Burger is an $18, 10-oz Angus beef patty, topped with cheddar, bacon, lettuce, tomato, chipotle horseradish aioli, and onion rings, all on a brioche bun! It’s already incredibly filling all by itself, even without the side of fries and the fried pickle. But then there’s the cake – a delicious monstrosity of chocolate and cream.

The Kitchen Sink Cake takes 31 steps to create. Each slice weighs three pounds and has seven layers: brownie, devil’s food cake, vanilla cheesecake, pecan pie, chocolate chunk cookie, vanilla chiffon, and peanut butter crunch – all held together with rich buttercream frosting between each layer, and smothered in chocolate ganache, chocolate chips, chocolate sauce, and Heath bar crunch. Oh, and a scoop of vanilla bean ice cream, just in case your sugar rush wasn’t already reaching coma-inducing levels.

The prize

As with most restaurant challenges, your reward for finishing within the allotted 30-minute window is fairly straightforward: your meal for free and bragging rights. If you can’t, you just have to pay $18 for your burger and $22 for a slice of the best cake you’ll ever eat. But if you manage to defeat the behemoth? Your name goes down in history in the Hard Rock Hall of Fame. You’ll be among legends, to be praised for generations to come – at least, among certain circles.

But, hey – what an experience! Try it out next time you’re planning your Universal dining. Who knows? Maybe you’ll beat the record for fastest time (currently set at less than 11 minutes). Maybe you’ll barely finish with seconds to spare, and pull off your legendary win just under the wire. Or, maybe, the monster will get the best of you, and you’ll have to try again one day, when you’re older and wiser.

No matter how your challenge ends, just trying is a win in my book. So step up to the plate and take a swing at The Kitchen Sink Challenge, located at the Kitchen restaurant on the ground floor of Hard Rock Hotel.

Whether at The Kitchen or somewhere else at Universal Orlando, share your favorite culinary experiences (or challenges!) with 80,000+ enthusiasts at our OI Community Facebook group.

And be sure to follow Orlando Informer on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram for the latest news and tips at Universal Orlando, Walt Disney World, and other Orlando experiences.

At the end of January, I was invited to attend a special event at Disney Springs. The venue was Frontera Cocina, a delightful Mexican dining experience created by celebrity chef Rick Bayless. The restaurant itself has been a staple of Disney’s dining/shopping/entertainment district since 2016, and I myself had eaten there once before. I enjoyed it but was also wary of trying new flavors; instead, I stuck to the tastes that I knew. However, after last week’s event, I think I’ve changed my tune. The night was a chance for Chef Bayless to unveil his new menu, Taste of Mexico City, and a chance for me to realize what great chefs can truly do.

We all have flavors we shy away from – things we tasted in our past that just didn’t settle right, or foods we’re too nervous to try. I have been guilty of avoiding entire dishes simply because they sound like I may not enjoy them. But when you are invited to try a new menu, you try everything on it. It was with mild trepidation that I tasted the first few dishes, but I quickly realized: this is flavor done right – every accent, every spice. Every new plate brought before me was a surprise, and I can’t wait to share all of them with you.

Let’s dive in, shall we?

1. Shrimp Ceviche Tostadas

Crispy corn tostadas topped with Florida Pink Shrimp, sun-dried tomatos, crunchy jicama, olives, serrano chiles, fresh lime, cilantro, onion, avocado (contains shellfish)

This new starter was the first surprise of the evening for me. Generally speaking, I don’t care for cilantro – I find it overpowering to the point of ruining entire meals – and these beautiful little monsters were absolutely covered in it. I took the first bite just to say I’d tried it and instead found myself falling completely in love with this appetizer. Instead of overwhelming the shrimp and avocado-topped corn tostadas, the cilantro complimented it perfectly. No one flavor stole the show. Even my plus-one, who despises avocado and all that touches it, polished off an entire piece by himself, and loved every bit of it.

If I had to make one adjustment, I could do with more of the shrimp, and a bit less of the jicama. Overall, however, it was a hit, and I will definitely be ordering it again.

2. Winter Green Ensalada

Shaved black kale, Arcadian lettuce, grilled pineapple, toasted pepitas, Cotija cheese, red onions, jicama, roasted tomatillo-serrano vinaigrette (contains dairy, seeds)

I generally avoid salads that are purely plant-based, preferring to have some sort of chicken or steak. However, this surprisingly-spicy salad was a delight.

3. Three Chile-roasted Brussels Sprouts

Brussels sprouts at Frontera Cocina
Three Chile-roasted Brussels Sprouts at Frontera Cocina

Crispy bacon, Cotija cheese (contains dairy)

Go ahead and file this under “vegetables I never would have tried if I weren’t being polite and sampling the whole menu.” Brussels sprouts have always been fairly high on my “no, thank you” list, and while I still would never order them willingly, the flavors themselves were actually delightful. The inherent texture of the sprouts is a personal turn-off for me; however, I realize that not everyone has the same aversions.

If you like Brussels sprouts, I’m sure you’ll love these bacon-and-cheese goodies. Just don’t ask me to share.

4. Swordfish Al Pastor

Swordfish and plantain rice at Frontera Cocina
Swordfish Al Pastor at Frontera Cocina

Grilled swordfish with “pastor” flavors (red chile, garlic, achiote), plantain rice, smoky pineapple-chipotle salsa

I have never enjoyed plantains – each time I’ve tried them, they’ve come across a bit too sweet, or a bit too slimy. This entree, however, taught me once again that the right flavors, in the right combination, can revolutionize a dish and change even the pickiest eater’s mind. I’ve always been a fan of swordfish, but the plantain chunks mixed in with the rice absolutely transformed the entire fish. It’s not a dish I’d dare try and make at home, but I have definitely found my go-to meal next time I visit Frontera Cocina.

We asked the chef about the plantains and discovered that they are actually a personal favorite of his, but most American consumers won’t try the fruit. So, he and his partner do their best to incorporate it into their meals in more subtle ways. Their plantain race is a staple of each of Chef Bayless’s restaurants, and it is incredibly worth trying.

5. Pork Belly Tacos

Pork belly tacos at Frontera Cocina
Pork Belly Tacos at Frontera Cocina

Crispy pork belly, smoky bacon, grilled knob onions, black bean refritos with queso fresco, guacamole, red onion, cilantro, three chile-agave salsa, served with warm corn tortillas (contains dairy, pork)

This dish was another cilantro surprise for me. The option to build your own taco is always a safe bet at Mexican restaurants, especially for those people who may be hesitant to try new things. I would suggest, however, trying at least one bite with everything before making your decisions; the black bean refritos were delicious, and the pork itself stood out even on its own.

6. Mexican Chocolate “Flan”

Flan at Frontera Cocina
Mexican Chocolate “Flan” at Frontera Cocina

Dark chocolate (made panna-cotta style) with Mexican cinnamon, golden sweet plantains, cajeta caramel, toasted almonds, spicy cinnamon sugar (contains dairy, nuts)

As with the Brussels sprouts, I had a hard time getting over the texture of the custard. That being said, the flavor itself was almost good enough to make up for it. My dining partner adores flan, and he devoured almost the entire thing. I think it’s safe to say, if this is your particular brand of dessert, you won’t regret finishing off your incredible meal with this dark-chocolate treat.

7. Cafe de Olla Sorbet

Sorbet at Frontera Cocina
Cafe de Olla Sorbet at Frontera Cocina

Mexican coffee, brown sugar, cinnamon, clove, orange zest

Throughout the entire evening, with dish after dish, Chef Bayless proved that the right artist can craft incredible flavor combinations. He can surprise and delight, and leave you eager for the next course. This dessert, however, brought the night home in a way I can only attempt to describe. Upon reading the initial list of ingredients that were supposedly used to craft this sorbet, my initial thought was something along the lines of, “Oh, great – so it will taste like one of those things, or none of them.” Allow me to just say, for the record, that when I’m wrong, I am oh so very wrong.

Not only was every single flavor easy to pick out, they complimented each other in a way that can only be described as absolute witchcraft. Some, like the cinnamon, were immediately apparent to me. Others, like the coffee, lingered on the tongue as a delightful aftertaste. This delicious sorbet was a reminder that cooking is, in fact, a science.

If I had to choose only one of the dessert options, this would be my vote – no hesitation.

While the Taste of Mexico City menu will be sticking around for awhile, the seasonal options, including the winter salad, Brussels sprouts, and my new favorite sorbet, will only be available for a limited time. However, no matter when you plan your next visit to Frontera Cocina, there’s bound to be something to intrigue and delight your taste buds. I know I can’t wait to order the swordfish again, and I am absolutely eager to see what Chef Bayless has in store next.

It is an often-overlooked skill, being able to weave your flavors just right. Many dining patrons forget to savor their meals these days as they hurry home or get back out and shop. But Frontera Cocina urges you to sit back and enjoy yourself. Their incredible cocktails say, “Relax. This place is for celebration.” The guitarist serenading us throughout the evening could transport anyone back to Mexico with merely a song, and he was well worth listening to. Even the decorations, simple but colorful, are meant to make people feel at home. That night, we sat in the back and watched the rest of Disney Springs pass us by. We enjoyed the view, the company, and the Taste of Mexico City. It is an experience I wish on everyone. Do stop by when you get a chance, and experience flavor done right.

It’s easy to picture summertime in a paradise like Orlando. In fact, the image that most often comes to mind when people imagine themselves vacationing in Florida, and visiting a place like Walt Disney World Resort, is “summer break.” The Dole Whips, the sunshine, the crowds, the oppressive heat… what’s not to love?

In all seriousness, I do adore Disney World at any time of year. However, while you may have your heart set on a June excursion, might I offer a humble suggestion? Come join us in the fall – specifically, September and early October. Take a journey with me and find out why!

1. Drop in attendance

Fall decor at Magic Kingdom
Okay – the streets won’t be THIS empty, but still.

While trends in crowd numbers vary from year to year, there’s historically a drop-off in park attendance at the start of the fall – kids are back in school, adults who have vacation time for the summer have gone back to work, and the major holiday season hasn’t begun yet. Many cast members and locals won’t even consider visiting the parks for fun until mid-September, when wait times often drop to 20 minutes per ride rather than two hours.

Without the extra tourists flooding the streets and filling the queues, guests and cast members alike are in a much better mood. People are friendlier, parade viewing is better, and you may just get a chance to ride everything you want in one day. Plus, if you plan on attending any of the special events that fill the fall calendar at Disney World, September is the perfect time to do it.

2. Favorable weather

Fall decor at Magic Kingdom
Another beautiful day in paradise

Speaking of things that can improve your mood, the difference in temperatures between July and September is astonishing. It’s no secret that Orlando is warm-to-hot all year round; however, the fall definitely lends itself to cooler days and breezy nights. Most of the hurricane season has passed, and even when it does rain, it is more likely to cool down the area rather than just making it hot and muggy.

So bring a sweater – you may actually find yourself needing it in the evening.

3. Epcot International Food & Wine Festival

Epcot International Food & Wine Festival
The majesty that is Food & Wine

Certainly one of the best-known special events that Walt Disney World hosts, the Epcot International Food & Wine Festival has become a staple of fall in Orlando. For some people, it’s the only chance they’ll ever get to try such mouth-watering treats as the cheddar cheese soup in Canada, since La Cellier Steakhouse is extremely popular and fairly expensive. Furthermore, during Food & Wine, small samples of some of Epcot’s most famous dishes are available outside of the restaurant walls – and, in addition, extra countries lend their tastes to the festival, leaving you free to eat and drink your way around the world with your dining passport in hand.

As if that wasn’t enough, Food & Wine also brings music into the mix – fall is filled with an amazing lineup with the Eat to the Beat concert series. And Epcot also plays host to some amazing workshops, classes, and seminars during the event. This park was always the more educational of the four at Disney World, but the experience is only heightened during the autumn months. You won’t want to miss it.

4. Halloween magic

Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party at Magic Kingdom
Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party at Magic Kingdom

I could (and have, quite often) go on and on about the joy that is Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party. Each year, Magic Kingdom plays host to my absolute favorite Halloween event in Orlando, and puts on the greatest parade I’ve ever seen on television or in person. Whether you’re travelling solo as an adult, or toting your entire family along with you, Not-So-Scary has something special for everyone. The characters themselves dress up in Halloween costumes, making their meet-and-greets that much more special. Adults and children alike are encouraged to take full advantage of the many trick-or-treating stands scattered throughout the park, and this is the one time a year when grown-ups are encouraged to come dressed up. And, even better, the event has an attendance cap.

Hard-ticket events can be pricey, but, in the end, I think this one is worth it. The parade runs twice each party night, and I’ve found it’s best to ride everything I want during the early viewing, and camp out late for the second one instead. Shorter ride lines, followed by better parade viewing? Win win!

If you are only able to pick one season to visit us here in Orlando and live out your dreams at Disney World, I think it’s pretty clear that fall is your best bet. So book your rooms for the end of September, and be sure to pack a scarf! I hope to see you at Magic Kingdom, all dressed up in costume this year, or share a drink with you at Food & Wine. See ya real soon, pals!

Picture the scene: you’ve been playing and adventuring at Universal Orlando Resprt all day. You’ve ridden your favorite roller coaster, met your favorite character, and filled your bags with souvenirs. What would be the best icing on the cake that is this perfect day? Actual icing.

I believe no vacation is complete without dessert (and no day, for that matter), so why not satisfy your inner child a bit more and give in to your sweet tooth? Here’s my list of the top five sweet treats at Universal, to help you find just the right cherry to top your amazing adventure with. (Warning: may contain actual cherries.)

1. Butterbeer

Butterbeer at The Wizarding World of Harry Potter
Cheers, muggles!

The Harry Potter-verse is, in my opinion, the literary gift that keeps on giving. The books helped shape my entire childhood, the movies were visually stunning, and the theme-park realization of the Wizarding World is better than I could have ever dreamed. And one of the greatest things to come out of the wizarding lands is the dining! I could honestly write an entire article ranking every dessert in just Harry’s wondrous world, and it took every bit of self-control I had to only include two on this list. However, I would be failing you as a reader if I didn’t talk about Butterbeer, that sweet drink we all read about and longed to try when we were first introduced to The Three Broomsticks in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.

Not only is it non-alcoholic, allowing your kiddos to enjoy it, but it is available in every variety imaginable. Cold, frozen, hot, ice cream, fudge… give it time – they’ll be selling Butterbeer-flavored coffee. (But, please, actually give us that, Universal.) My personal favorite will always be hot. It’s the way we all imagined it when Harry took his first sip. It is, in fact, the original description:

“Ron came back five minutes later, carrying three foaming tankards of hot Butterbeer.”

This is the truest form of the beverage, and I cried from pure fandom joy the first time I tasted it. Hot Butterbeer is, unfortunately, only usually available from November through February. So take advantage of it while you can, and enjoy the colder renditions the rest of the year – they’re just as sweet, and perfectly refreshing. Cheers, witches and wizards!

2. French Toast Muffin

French Toast Muffin at Universal Studios Florida

(Note: this item was available at the late Beverly Hills Boulangerie, though we’re hopeful that it’ll pop back up on the menu of its replacement venue, the Today Cafe. Until we find out for certain, we’re keeping this listed here, if only for posterity’s sake.)

I often find myself on Hollywood Boulevard around breakfast time – you might, too, if you start your day on the Universal Studios Florida side, rather than Islands of Adventure. Next time you’re heading into the park, stop by Beverly Hills Boulangerie first, and try my favorite item on the menu: the French Toast Muffin. It looks simple but is surprisingly flavorful. I stumbled upon it by accident one morning and have exclusively bought this scrumptious gem ever since. Move over, blueberry – there’s a new king of muffins in town!

It may be the best-kept secret of the breakfast pastries. Even other team members across the parks don’t know it exists, but they are always thrilled when they finally try one. And if you really want to kick your day off with a sweet fix, add a dipping cup of hot syrup! Because why not have dessert first?

3. No-Melt Ice Cream

No-Melt Ice Cream at The Wizarding World of Harry Potter
So many delicious options!

It’s easy to get lost in the familiar sweets brought to life within The Wizarding World of Harry Potter. We’ve already mentioned Butterbeer, of course, but then there’s Chocolate Frogs, Cauldron Cakes, Sticky Toffee Pudding… one day I will eat my way through all of them and die happy. However, for right now, my favorite of any treat behind the candy counter at Honeydukes is a little-known gem: the No-Melt Ice Cream. It’s not a dessert we’d have read about in the books, so a lot of people are inclined to ignore it in favor of the more recognizable Pumpkin Pasties.

I’m here to tell you don’t give in! No box of Every-Flavor Beans will ever compare to this. It may look like just a tiny swirl of ice cream, but it’s basically a cup of pure icing and joy. There are currently five different flavors, but my favorite will always be the chocolate. It’s dotted with M&Ms and topped with a cherry, and it tastes like thick, decadent brownie batter. This dessert is everything I never knew I wanted as a child, and now that I’m an adult spending my own money on sweets? I buy one every chance that I get. After all, I need to make up for some serious lost time.

4. Honk Honkers cotton candy

Honk Honkers at Islands of Adventure
Honk Honkers at Islands of Adventure

Seuss Landing is full of bright colors, whimsical patterns, and the very spirit of childhood. They have Who-sized doorways for the shops, and even the trees are unique. So, it stands to reason that one of the most creative, delightful desserts in all of Universal would be found right here, at Honk Honkers: cotton candy. Oh, I’m sorry – I should have said, “The small planet of customizable spun sugar that could immediately spike a family of six into a near-comical sugar high.” These things are gigantic. I couldn’t finish one, and my friend couldn’t finish one. In the end, I think I shared with eight people and still threw part of it away. But that isn’t because I didn’t enjoy it – it’s simply because they do not skimp on portion sizes.

It isn’t just a giant sweet monstrosity, however. You can also get it mixed with candies of your choice, and you can have the entire thing wrapped on a giant lollipop rather than the traditional paper cone. I added Nerds, rock candy, and mini-marshmallows in mine, and I regret absolutely nothing.

5. Toothsome Chocolate Emporium

Candies from Toothsome Chocolate Emporium and Savory Feast Kitchen
It’s impossible to pick just one. We’ve tried

Yes, I do realize this is an entire restaurant, and not a specific dessert. There is, however, good reason for my including the entire location: I have yet to try a single candy, milkshake, or baked treat from Toothsome Chocolate Emporium and Savory Feast Kitchen that is not an absolute delight. Whatever your tastes, there is something for you at this steampunk-themed confectionery and dining experience. Their artisanal milkshakes are extravagant and creative, their imported chocolate bars from Europe are surprisingly good for a theme park, and I could absolutely live on their selection of bite-sized truffles.

There is also, I believe, something to be said for ambiance when it comes to food choices. Yes, the flavors are divine, but the whole building is a joy to wander around in on its own. If you want to elevate your dessert game to the next level, the Chocolate Emporium is definitely the way to go!

There are so many other places to satisfy your sugar cravings at Universal; CityWalk itself is lined with classics and old standards like Cinnabon and Dippin’ Dots, as well as new favorites like Voodoo Doughnut. This list barely begins to encompass the truly fantastic desserts that Universal Orlando has to offer. So, spoil yourself a little. Grab a gourmet cupcake, raise a tankard full of Butterbeer, and treat yourself!

Walt Disney World Resort has long been a place associated with children. Families take their vacations to Magic Kingdom, field trips flood the parks, and spring break is heralded by thousands of teenagers and 20-somethings escaping school. There is, of course, nothing wrong with this. But I have always believed that Disney Magic is for children of all ages – and, sometimes, that includes being a child at heart.

It seems that more and more adults are embracing their own passion for Disney, taking themselves to Magic Kingdom in their 30s, 40s, and onward. I wholeheartedly endorse this behavior and believe you should never lose the part of you that thrives on adventure and character dining. However, there are plenty of times when the grown-ups just want a chance to kick back and enjoy some adult entertainment at Disney World. With Pleasure Island long gone, many people think they have to leave property to have a good time as a legal adult nowadays – but they couldn’t be more wrong.

Here’s my personal list of the top five nightlife options that adults can still enjoy at Walt Disney World.

1. AMC Dine-In

AMC Disney Springs 24
AMC Disney Springs 24

As a kid, movie theaters were always a treat. I would have been thrilled with a bag of popcorn and a soda for my concessions – throw in a candy bar, and it was pretty much the best day of my life.

As a “big kid,” however, I’ve found that my tastes have upgraded (somewhat), and there is no better place to enjoy the perks of adult movie-going than AMC Dine-In at Disney Springs. Not only does the theater have assigned seating (what – I don’t have to get there two hours early just to get a good spot?), but the food is also miraculous. I’ve ordered three-course meals at their establishment while watching the latest blockbuster and enjoyed myself every single time. Grilled salmon, loaded tater tots, steak and rice bowls, and I can have wine delivered to my seat? Where has this place been all my life!

The lobby also features a full bar, so you can enjoy yourself even while you wait to be seated. Perfect for date night, group hangs, or even treating yourself to a lovely evening, I cannot recommend Dine-In enough. You deserve to do dinner and a movie like an adult.

2. The Edison

The Edison at Disney Springs
The Edison at Disney Springs

One of the most popular spots in Disney Springs since it opened in January 2018, The Edison is unique in that it requires a dress code, and a minimum age requirement, after 10:00 pm – any nighttime guest must be over 21, and there are absolutely no flip-flops or baseball hats allowed. Not only is the food to die for, but there is entertainment galore, from aerialists to stilt walkers.

The Edison is, we hope, reinventing adult entertainment for The Walt Disney Company, with their themed dancers, contortionists, and more. The entire restaurant is 1920s-themed, allowing you to embrace your imagination while still having the time of your life. The hand-crafted cocktails are so spectacular, you may have trouble ordering just one. So put on your flapper dress, doll, and pour yourself a bottle of hooch! This Industrial Gothic watering hole is the perfect place for you.

3. Disney’s BoardWalk

Disney's BoardWalk
Disney’s BoardWalk beckons

Two of my favorite places on the BoardWalk are 21 and over. First, there’s Jellyrolls, one of my absolute favorite bars in all of Orlando. It’s the perfect place for that casual Friday-night vibe, but with a twist! In this case, it’s the incredibly talented dueling pianists that grace the stage every night. Request your favorite tunes or let the musicians choose their own; either way, I promise you’ll have a great time. As a bonus, singing along is absolutely encouraged! (Don’t feel comfortable enough to join the public karaoke? Don’t worry – the bar can take care of that.)

After you’ve finished singing your heart out, don’t forget to put on those boogie shoes and head next door to the Atlantic Dance Hall. It’s one of the best night clubs in town, and everyone is there just to dance the night away. And, if you do your research, you may just be able to find one of the many groups who goes dancing on the regular and join up with them. Local teachers are known to take their adult students for a spin around the floor, and they just may be willing to teach you a thing or two, as well. In addition, they’re currently gearing up for their New Year’s Eve extravaganza, so you can hip and hop into 2019 like a pro!

4. The Basket

Food at Disney Spring's Wine Bar George
Yes, I’ll take that basket, please (image: Disney)

If you haven’t just wandered aimlessly around Disney Springs, you might have missed The Basket at Wine Bar George. Often open until as late as 2:00 am, this quick-service gem allows you to craft your own specialty picnic basket, complete with all your favorites. Build your own to-go feast, complete with cheese, bread, meat, desserts, and, even, incredible wine. The Basket has taken date night to a whole new level and allows you to set up a delicious meal wherever you like.

Want something a bit more romantic than just parking it in Disney Springs somewhere? The Basket is conveniently located right across from the boat docks that can ferry you (for free) to Saratoga Springs Resort & Spa or Old Key West Resort. So pack up your basket, grab your date, and try a new take on classy late-night dining.

5. House of Blues

House of Blues at Disney Springs
House of Blues at Disney Springs (image: Disney)

And, finally, let’s bring it home with a classic.

I would be remiss if I didn’t include Disney World’s famous concert destination, House of Blues at Disney Springs. With its mouth-watering soul food and refreshing drinks, you can enjoy your favorite bands after a long day of park hopping and souvenir shopping. Check their show schedule to find out their concert lineup, and join them at the bar for their daily happy hour. All ages may be allowed in, but let’s be honest grown-ups… we all know this place is for you. So kick back and enjoy it, because this is a kind of nightlife magic you don’t get anywhere else in town.

The magic doesn’t end when the parks close, and it shouldn’t have to end when you turn 21, either. At Walt Disney World Resort, they’re creating new ways for the adult clientele to enjoy themselves after hours, so take advantage of it. Whether the relaxing picnics are more your style, or you prefer to dance until your feet go numb, there’s something for everyone after nightfall at Disney – just remember to tell everyone all about your after-hours adventures in our OI Community.

Nothing beats the thrill of starting your vacation. You’ve saved for months or years to visit that perfect destination. You’ve planned every moment down to the last detail, and made your ideal itinerary of can’t-miss restaurants and experiences. It’s finally time to pack your bags and hit the road – Universal Orlando Resort, here you come!

Now, perhaps, you’ve got plenty of change to spare, or maybe you’re doing the whole trip on a budget. Either way, your bank account should never limit the memories you’ll be making. Here’s my personal list of five inexpensive (or free) ways to make your Universal vacation absolutely unforgettable.

1. Concerts

Universal Studios Florida Summer Concert Series 2011
One of Universal Studios Florida’s many concerts

Performances at the Music Plaza stage (located by the Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit roller coaster [wow, that was alliterative]) aren’t every day, but if you’re lucky enough to plan your trip around a favorite group or event, you can have an amazing concert experience for just the price of park admission! Mardi Gras and the Holidays celebration both host an excellent lineup each year, although they aren’t the only occasions where the stage is used. And even if you don’t want to brave the lawn itself, you can hear (and often see) the concerts from anywhere in the surrounding area.

There are fantastic shows and musical experiences all throughout the parks – the Blues Brothers, Celestina Warbeck, the Frog Choir – but these concerts are a specialty. Doesn’t your vacation deserve something a little extra?

2. Shutterbutton’s

Shutterbutton's Photography Studio at The Wizarding World of Harry Potter - Diagon Alley
Time to get your move on

Have you ever wanted to create your own wizard photograph, as made famous by the Harry Potter franchise? Of course you have. They’re not just pictures – they walk and talk and wave hello! It’s so much more satisfying than an everyday still photo and simply more interesting than a home video.

Good news for you witches and wizards out there: Shutterbutton’s Photography Studio in The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Diagon Alley is here to make your dreams come true. This shop inserts you and your party into 12 unique scenes from across the Wizarding World, and allows you to immortalize your experience in a way no other souvenir does.

Now, at first glance, this may not seem like an option that belongs in the “inexpensive” category, as the entire cost of the session is $85. However, there are six people allowed in each scene, and if you split the tab evenly, that’s less than $15 per person. All of you will have access to the final product, and it’s the perfect gift for those adult birthday trips, bachelorette parties, and graduation outings.

3. Mini golf

Hollywood Drive-In Golf at Universal CityWalk Orlando
Hollywood Drive-In Golf at Universal CityWalk Orlando

When you’re travelling through CityWalk, you can’t help but pass by (or over) Hollywood Drive-In Golf – it’s right outside the Cinemark movie theater, and it is absolutely darling. Perfect for those families with little kids, it’s less than $20 a person, and you can often find discounts if you order your tickets online. (CityWalk itself is also free to visit, and even parking is free after 6:00 pm!)

In addition, CityWalk in general is completely worth visiting. You spend what you want to, on dining, shopping, and entertainment. Maybe you’ll find that perfect little gift in one of the stores, or maybe you’ll just enjoy window shopping along the waterfront. Perhaps you’ll stumble upon your new favorite dining experience. Maybe you’ll find you have the budget for the Blue Man Group, on a night when they’re available on Groupon (no, really – it happens!).

4. Behind the scenes

Revenge of the Mummy's queue
Revenge of the Mummy’s queue holds many secrets

There is much to be said for the detail that Universal puts into its rides and various atmospheres. Unfortunately, so much of it goes unnoticed by everyday guests. Lucky for you, the team members are always eager to share their favorite bits of trivia about their show, ride, or venue. At one time, Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey allowed tours through Hogwarts Castle, led by its students; while the addition of Express Pass access to the ride has ruled that option out, the employees are still incredibly knowledgeable about the inside of the queue. Ask them to tell you about their favorite part of the castle or about the Horcruxes hidden in Dumbledore’s office – the team members are incredibly well-trained in the Potter-verse, so let them show it off to you!

The Wizarding World is not the only fandom that’s represented in the parks. You can take official tours of Men in Black: Alien AttackRace through New York Starring Jimmy Fallon, and Revenge of the Mummy, or, if those are unavailable (usually due to crowd levels), just ask any of their ride operators to tell you all sorts of details. Fans don’t only visit the parks – they work in them. Chances are, you can find out some amazing gems just by talking to the right team members and asking them questions about their favorite parts of Universal Studios Florida. It is completely free to have a good conversation, and you may leave with more magical secrets than even we know.

5. The happiest holidays

Celebrating Grinchmas in Seuss Landing
Celebrating Grinchmas in Seuss Landing

I have mentioned this before in previous articles (and will continue to do so because I am passionate about them), but the annual events provided by Universal are absolutely astounding – and, more importantly, many of them are free with your ticket.

Grinchmas takes over all of Seuss Landing from November until the end of the year, and the Who-liday Spectacular show runs almost all day. There are extra parades, shows, decorations, and more that simply litter the streets, bringing an extra level of excitement to your trip; The Magic of Christmas at Hogwarts Castle, the holiday-themed projection-mapping show in The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Hogsmeade, is magical in a way I can’t describe and simply has to be experienced for yourself. Even Celestina Warbeck has a holiday show now, and Hot Butterbeer is freely available on both sides of the Wizarding World.

Mardi Gras brings a whole different flavor to the parks, with music, beads, great food, and massive dance parties breaking out in the streets. This one is also included with your park ticket, so there’s no reason not to join in the celebration!

With all of the amazing holiday events spread throughout the year, any vacation planned around them is sure to be unforgettable.

Bottom line: talk to everyone. There are secrets down every street of these parks, and people are eager to share them. Find out what your barista’s favorite secluded spot is. Ask your attractions attendant where they prefer to watch the parade. Talk to photographers about their best photo poses, and take your concierge’s advice about where to find dinner. Ride the free water taxis. Take your time as you stroll through the parks or CityWalk. I guarantee there’s a new memory hiding around every corner, just waiting for you to find it.

And once you do, be sure to share it with tens of thousands of other vacation-planners in the OI Community. While you’re at it, you can also follow Orlando Informer on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram for the latest news and tips at Universal Orlando, Walt Disney World, and other Orlando destinations.

The holidays are fast approaching. Vacation budgets are beginning to compete with turkey budgets, Christmas lists, and the cost of flying across the country to visit family. How are you supposed to collect memorable souvenirs from your Universal Orlando Resort trip without breaking the bank?

Well, have no fear! I’m here to do the work for you. Even if you don’t have to fight with the holidays, this list of budget-friendly treats and trinkets is just the thing to make sure your vacation doesn’t drain your wallet.

1. Picture frames

Picture frames at Universal Orlando

There are countless adorable photo frames in every style imaginable. Universal prides itself on bringing your favorite movies to life, and that includes the still shots. As a result, they’ve really stepped up their souvenir picture-frame game – you can find anything from stylish photo clips to the “your face goes here” type, where you insert yourself into a famous movie scene. From Minions to magic, there’s something here for everyone.

Many of them can be a bit pricey, but there’s one that I particularly adore that rings up at just under $10: the 4×6 Scene Clapper frame. It’s simple but unique, and the perfect home for your favorite park memories to live forever.

2. Collectible pins

Collectible pins at Universal Orlando
Collectible pins at Universal Orlando

Pins have become a staple of theme-park shopping over the last decade. When I was a kid, I never saw this sort of phenomenon in any park I visited; now, however, the demand for backpack and lapel adornments has created a wave of gorgeous, affordable pins and buttons. Again, you have to double-check your pricing, but most of them range from $7.00 to $9.50, and they are absolutely stunning. These pins are easy to pack away in your luggage (or decorate it with), and they come in every flavor of fandom.

My personal favorites are the Harry Potter Hogwarts house-inspired pins. They’ve got everything from simple Ravenclaw banners to the Hufflepuff house crest. Pick one up and showcase your house pride, wherever you go!

3. Shot glasses

Shot glasses at Universal Orlando

Collectible shot glasses have been a souvenir standard for as long as I can remember. They are in every airport and major landmark, they are easy to store and display, and they’re incredibly affordable!

Start your own collection, or add to your existing hoard, with a Universal Studios shot glass. Just wandering around the shops, I found seven I wanted to take home with me, the most expensive of which was only $9.00. And, even better, they have a whole personalized series with names on them for exactly $10 each! Although, as with collectible key chains, maybe avoid them if you’ve got a less-than-common name…

4. Stamped coins

Pressed coins at Universal Orlando
Pressed coins at Universal Orlando

An oldie but a goodie, Universal has kept the tradition of pressed pennies alive with is beautiful stamped coin machines. This may seem like an overdone classic, but I think the beautiful simplicity of coin collecting is becoming a lost art.

For 51 cents, you can get your favorite design, and for only $6.95, you can also pick up the Universal Studios collectible coin album! That’s less than $8.00 to start up a tradition that your family can continue for years to come.

5. Jewelry

Jewelry at Universal Orlando

Want a more subtle way to remember your vacation? Luckily for you, Universal has a surprisingly amazing collection of bracelets, necklaces, and earrings in its larger gift shops. These aren’t the branded, themed ones that have your favorite characters on them, but maybe that’s not your thing! Maybe you just want to take a small piece of Orlando home with you, and these darling accessories are the perfect way to do it.

My personal favorites are a pair of star earrings that would have made our Hollywood icons swoon, priced at only $9.95. What a perfect way to feel like the superstar you are. Marilyn who?!

Bonus: Stationary

Exploring the shops while I picked out my favorite options for this list, I was constantly amazed by how many adorable stationary items there are in every area of the park. I was constantly surrounded by adorable character pens, notebooks, pencils, decorative journals, and more for $10 and under! Even better, they have them for every fandom and every need – children who just want to doodle, students who need school supplies, and adults who want to add a whimsical touch to their office can all find something amazing in paper products.

Budget should never get in the way of you and your family remembering your trip forever. I could go on and on with this list of affordable souvenirs – candy, bookmarks, tiny Pop vinyl keychains – but I promise there are even more hidden gems just waiting for you to discover them. So, head on out to the parks, and come home with a piece of the glitz, glamour, and magic for yourself.

Known for its thrills and adventure, Universal Orlando Resort is the perfect place to start the greatest adventure of your life! Whether you love to surround yourself with movie magic or you just enjoy Butterbeer, we can find you the perfect place to pop the question.

1. Ride photos

The Incredible Hulk's engagement ride photo
This is one OI couple’s real engagement photo! See their story here

Universal is famous for its larger-than-life roller coasters and groundbreaking attractions. Does your partner have a favorite? Learn where the ride cameras are and use it to your advantage! Be warned, however: most of the bigger coasters at Universal have metal detectors now, and you are required to leave everything in your locker… meaning you can’t take a “show the ring on the ride” picture. But you can get creative with t-shirt reveals! Print “Will you marry me?” on a shirt and open your jacket right at the perfect moment. No risk of losing the ring, and no risk of security accidentally outing your plan early, as they discover the ring with their equipment – although, you know, if that’s how you want to get it done, I’m not judging.

Whether you choose to pop the question amidst the glitz and glamour of Hollywood or framed within your favorite film, Universal Orlando is the perfect place to shoot that opening sequence. Lights, camera, action!

2. Early access

Sunrise at Islands of Adventure
What can beat this setting?

If you’ve never gotten early access to one of the parks, you are truly missing out – there is almost no one there, the streets are empty and quiet, and the lighting is phenomenal. Something about pre-sunrise theme-park lights always feels magical to me. This is the perfect time of day to take advantage of a little private moment in the park, before the crowds and the heat set in.

(To take advantage of Early Park Admission, make sure you’re either an annual passholder or staying at one of the on-site hotels. Check dates and times with your concierge to make sure early admission is available on your planned date, and have fun!)

3. Pure ambiance

Exquisite

Chances are, if you’re not just visiting Universal for the rides, there’s a fandom you or your partner adore. The Simpsons? Men in Black? Harry Potter? All are represented, and all have their own unique sections of the park.

The immersive nature of Islands of Adventure, specifically, can grant you the opportunity to feel like you’re visiting the world itself and make your proposal that much more magical. Every part of The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Hogsmeade is a worthy photo op for a Potter-head proposal. Dinosaurs roam the land in Jurassic Park, serving as the perfect companions for your big moment. And everything in Seuss Landing is just so joyously colorful, it would make anyone’s day!

Become a part of your favorite story forever, and let the movie magic do the rest.

4. One-of-a-kind

Did you know you can get specialty engravings done on coins at The Lost Continent‘s Mythical Metals? It’s true! Just pick your material and engraved design, and the fine craftsmen will provide you with an incredible wearable medallion that you helped create. Look into the symbolism of the available designs – there is sure to be something that catches your eye and which would make the perfect companion piece to your intended’s ring.

Not only that, but right across the way is Historic Families, where you can find your ancestor’s coat of arms! Nothing says romance like handing your family crest to your partner and saying, “I want this to be your symbol, too.” And, no, I’m not being sarcastic – I would literally burst into tears, it’s so charmingly perfect and unexpected.

5. Rising Star

The Rising Star stage, sans live musical backup… and an engagement ring

CityWalk, Universal Orlando’s entertainment district, is an incredible place, full of fantastic dining and great shopping, but my favorite “experience” in all of CityWalk is the Rising Star karaoke bar. Not only do you get to take the stage and serenade the patrons, you are joined by a full band and backup singers.

So get up there! Grab the mic and sing your partner his or her favorite song. S/he’s sure to be amazed by your show-stopping declaration of love.

6. The globe

Universal Orlando’s iconic globe

There are fewer more iconic photos than in front of the giant, spinning Universal globe right outside Universal Studios Florida. It sits at the heart of a beautiful water feature, and it is one of the most popular places to snap your souvenir photos.

7. Caricature artists

Scattered throughout both theme parks, you can find some incredibly talented caricature artists, ready and willing to capture your vacation in animated style. If you really want a quirky and memorable proposal story, slip your artist a note, asking them to draw you proposing. When your partner says yes, not only will you have a creative story to tell, but you’ll have a one-of-a-kind memento capturing the moment like nobody else!

8. Annual events

Vamp '85: New Year's Eve at Halloween Horror Nights 2018
I do!

If you want your proposal to have that extra air of glitz and glam, consider staging it during one of the many annual events that Universal puts on throughout the year. Halloween Horror Nights is a favorite for all those couples who enjoy the terror and gore (and, honestly, if you’ve found that special someone who enjoys horror as much as you, keep him or her!). The Grinchmas event grows bigger and brighter each year, so why not let the true spirit of Christmas flavor your special day? There’s even Mardi Gras, filled with fabulous music, amazing dancing, and more fun than you can imagine.

Each and every extravaganza is worth the time and would make the perfect backdrop for your special day.

When you think of a Walt Disney World Resort proposal, one of the most popular and evocative images is, of course, in front of Cinderella Castle. While that is a beautiful idea, the odds of being able to get exactly the photo and the moment you want are extremely slim.

But don’t lose hope! I’m here to share some equally magical moments that you can turn into the opening chapter of your own personal fairy tale.

1. Dessert fireworks

Happily Ever After fireworks at Magic Kingdom
The prefect backdrop to your very own Happily Ever After

If you’ve never experienced one of the fireworks dessert parties, you are truly missing out. My personal favorites are Magic Kingdom (on Tomorrowland Terrace) and Epcot (anywhere in World Showcase). The dessert parties are hard-ticket-reserved events, which means only a limited number of people are allowed in – you are guaranteed to not have an unreasonable number of guests around you, allowing for just the right combination of intimacy and “awwwww!”

All-you-can-eat dessert, fancy drinks, and a beautiful fireworks backdrop? I call that a win! Not only that, but the employees who work the dessert parties are, in my experience, wonderfully helpful and accommodating. Some of the most magical moments I’ve ever experienced were during dessert parties, and I still owe the best Disney memory of my life to the team running Epcot’s dessert extravaganza during the International Food and Wine Festival.

2. Resort room surprise

The staffs at Disney World’s various resorts are truly wonderful. If you want a completely private moment, plan ahead with them. Whatever you provide, they will arrange it in the room while you’re out; flowers, ring, a framed photo of you two together – if there’s a scene you’d like to set in your hotel room, let the front desk know, and they’ll do their best to work with you!

In fact, you can take it one step further with Disney Floral and Gifts. This branch of the company specializes in delivering special packages right to your room. You can pre-order embroidered Mickey ears and champagne or, even, a tiara to make Cinderella jealous! The possibilities are endless, and the perfect way to sweep your partner off their feet without worrying about a big public display. Crowds aren’t for everybody, so why not make your special moment a quiet one, between just the two of you?

3. The greatest treasure

Pirates' League at Magic Kingdom
Of all the treasures contained here, the greatest is yours

Scavenger hunt proposals have become very popular lately. Lucky for you, Walt Disney World has several interactive scavenger hunts already built in! My personal favorite is A Pirate’s Adventure: Treasure of the Seven Seas. It’s fluffy fun, there are several different map options, and you’ve got the obvious tie-in of “you’re my greatest treasure,” or something like that (I’m not here to write your proposal for you – just to tell you where to stage it). However, make sure you do the research ahead of time. Each map follows a slightly different path, and I wouldn’t want you to end up in a final location you weren’t crazy about.

If you need a personal recommendation, I have to say that the ladies and gents who work the Pirates’ League near the Treasure of the Seven Seas hunt are wonderful human beings and, in my experience, are always happy to help make some magic for the big kids inside all of us. Get yourselves a celebratory pirate makeover with the League after your partner says yes!

4. The train station

Main Street train station at Magic Kingdom
Next stop: the rest of your life

Another fine example of “great backdrop with fewer crowds,” the Main Street, USA train station in Magic Kingdom is a perfect place to pop the question. Often nearly empty, and with tons of helpful Ops cast members nearby to help snap the photos, I can’t recommend it enough. The views of Main Street and Cinderella Castle from the station are breathtaking, and they’re a perfect place for proposals and follow-up engagement photos alike.

As a bonus, if you propose around the holidays, Main Street is always beautifully decorated, making your proposal backdrop extra magical.

5. Holiday parties galore!

Holidays at Magic Kingdom
It can’t get much better than this

And speaking of holidays, they are some of the best times to visit the parks, especially Magic Kingdom. Hard-ticket events, as I mentioned, are a great way to ensure that your chosen proposal spot won’t be completely jam-packed with crowds. Whether you take your partner trick-or-treating during Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party or treat them to a surprise snowfall during any of the Christmas events, there’s a perfect special experience for every couple. The trees at Magic Kingdom are magnificent at Christmas – and, if you’re sneaky, you just might be able to slide your ring box underneath with the rest of the presents.

6. Dining magic

Coral Reef Restaurant at Epcot

The restaurants all across property are well-accustomed to helping make proposal magic happen. Whether you want a bottle of champagne sent over with the ring in a glass, or a special “Will you marry me?” dessert, call ahead to arrange your particular brand of magical dining. Just make sure you’re careful if you choose a location that features characters – they are not allowed to be anywhere near the proposal while it’s happening, in case something goes wrong. But of course nothing will go wrong with your proposal, because you’re being smart and are planning ahead.

Want to get really fancy with it? Rumor has it that if you book with Coral Reef in Epcot, you can arrange for a scuba diver to assist with your proposal, swimming by your table with the “Will you marry me?” sign.

7. Ride photos

Knowing exactly where ride cameras are can be a marvelous thing. No suspicion is raised by insisting on riding your partner’s favorite attraction, and some on-ride proposals make for amazing photos.

A word of caution, however: do not lose the ring! There is no guarantee you’ll be able to get it back. Tie it into the case. Use a prop ring for the photo and keep the real one tucked away for after. Wear a shirt with “Will you marry me?” and unbutton your jacket to show it during the ride. There are so many options to make sure you protect the most important piece of jewelry you’ll ever buy in your life.

8. The Cinderella treatment

Carriage ride at Walt Disney World
One of Disney’s legendary carriage rides. Image: Disney

This last one is a classic for anyone who grew up watching Disney movies or romantic comedies – or both. It is, of course, the horse-drawn carriage rides at Port Orleans and Fort Wilderness Resorts. Each half-hour ride takes you and your partner through a quiet and idyllic scene, perfect for another intimate proposal. Reservations are highly recommended, but the setting could not be more charming. Make your lord or lady feel like the royalty they are from the seat of their own private coach. Want to make it even more interesting? Each carriage gets decked out with lights and garlands every December, turning Christmas carriages into sleigh rides.

No matter how you choose to pop the question, it is sure to be one of the most magical days of your life. Let the joy and pixie dust of Walt Disney World keep you company, from your own Once upon a Time all the way through to Happily Ever After.
