When the park opened, WORLD EXPO was designed, from a film production standpoint, to be an area devoid of telltale architectural details of a certain place/time. This enabled film productions to shoot in the area and dress it as any area of the world, hence the name “World Expo”.

From a theme park perspective, WORLD EXPO offered guests a taste of global foods at the International Food and FIlm Festival food court.

I agree with you that the Springfield area is incredibly well done and full of little jokes and quirky signs, reminiscent of the show itself. My only complaint about Springfield is that the power plant is missing. Even if it was just a mural on the blank side of the Simpsons ride (facing Kwik-E-Mart) depicting the power plant in the distance, it would still be better than a giant blank wall and NO power plant anywhere in town. If they could make it steam out of the top as well, that would be icing on the cake
