Aside from I love the fact that Universal can finally stick it to Disney (after being on the receiving end for so long) is this: I would be concerned of what can legitimately replace Marvel Island. The only For Sure thing is Star Wars, and that’s off the board. Marvel is an ever green that will be resonate with people for generations (same with Star Wars and Harry Potter). I don’t think Lord of the Rings has that and I’m not sure what does. They already blew the opportunity for DC characters (which would have been an acceptable trade out).

And good point Bill. Disney gets a cut of the profits for not doing a thing. Sounds like a winning deal to me.

They have the exclusive rights east of the Mississippi, and as long as they keep up their end of the contract, I don’t see anything changing. You have to remember – Disney gets a cut of Universal’s profits from the sale of Marvel related merchandise, plus the money they are paying for the rights. And the contract REQUIRES a certain amount of retail space for Marvel items, as well as a certain amount of marketing of Marvel in Universal’s advertising campaigns. Since Disney can use Marvel characters in California and their international properties, and they are profiting on Universal’s back in Florida, I don’t think they are quite as upset about it as some people think.
