Universal Orlando Photo Connect & ride photos - complete guide

OI Center

In this guide, we’ll examine Universal Photo Connect in detail, and we’ll provide you with all the information about ride photos available throughout Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure.

We’d like to kindly advise you upfront that there is a lot of information in this guide, so don’t try to digest all of it on your first read through. But do take the time to review all the details and advice we offer before your trip because this program can be confusing to guests and Universal Team Members alike.

First we will discuss Universal’s Photo Connect service, and then we will discuss specifics about ride photos. Let’s get started!

Universal Photo Connect
Photo Connect is Universal Orlando’s program that enables guests to collect, view, and share photos, and also create one-of-a-kind custom memorabilia.

When you enter Universal Studios Florida or Islands of Adventure, you will be greeted by a photographer who will offer to take your party’s photo. As with Disney’s PhotoPass, the photographer will take a series of pictures and hand you a Photo Connect Star Card with a QR code. You may use the same Star Card throughout your day at Universal Orlando – at both theme parks and on all participating rides – but you do need to get a new card each day of your visit (unless you purchase the Star Card Package, as we will explain further down the page).

Unlike Disney’s PhotoPass, with Universal Photo Connect your pictures are not automatically available online. Instead, you are given the option to purchase individual prints or purchase the Star Card Package, which will give you online access to digital proofs of your images.

For guests already on-site, individual prints or the Star Card Package may be purchased at the standalone photo stores or ride photo locations. The standalone stores, better known as the Universal Photo Connect Stores, are located just inside the turnstiles at each park. The shop at Universal Studios Florida is pictured above, and here is the shop at Islands of Adventure:

A family checks out their photos.

When you step inside, a Team Member will ask for your Photo Connect Star Card. If you happen to have more than one card, they will be able to merge them. It isn’t necessary to stop at the Photo Connect counter immediately after your first photo is shot because it can take up to two hours for your photos to become available in the system. However, you must – repeat, you must – view your photos inside either park before the end of the day – Photo Connect cards are good for the same day only (again, unless you purchased the Star Card Package).

The only way to have the ability to view your photos online is to purchase the Star Card Package. The package covers multiple days and includes unlimited access to digital proofs of all of your in-park and ride photos.

Purchasing the Star Card Package
The Star Card Package currently offered at the parks can be bought at the Universal Photo Connect Stores or participating rides. It is $69.95 plus tax for three consecutive days, and it includes:

  • Unlimited access to digital copies of all you in-park and ride photos
  • Photo Connect Lanyard and Star Card
  • (1) 4×6 and (1) 5×7 photo print at the time of purchase or redemption
  • Smartphone Connectivity with the Amazing Pictures app – Android or iOS
  • Exclusive pricing on park photo prints – as low as $2.00 per print
  • ** These inclusions are always subject to change
What does “unlimited access” mean? This means that once you have included a photo as part of your collection during the period for which your package is active, you will be able to access that photo and view/download it at any time in the future using the Photo Connect website, which we’ll discuss in a bit, or the mobile app. In this sense, once your photos are part of your account, your access to them never expires.

What if there are ten people in my family, do we just need one package? When you purchase and activate your Star Card Package, you receive two Star Cards for that package. Using these two cards, you can add as many photos as you’d like to your account. So if you have ten people in your family, as long as you’re happy collecting photos in one account using two cards, you’re set.

PRE-PURCHASE OFFER: Currently Universal guests can pre-purchase the 3-day Star Card Package at this special website address: https://presale.amaz...otoConnect.aspx. What’s more, the online price is at least $10 less than the in-park price. Unfortunately, the website doesn’t give users any details about how long purchases are valid for, but we’ve been told by Photo Connect that they are good indefinitely (meaning the voucher you purchase today should be redeemable even if you don’t travel for six months or more).

1-DAY & 3-DAY EXTENSIONS: Although not widely advertised, guests on-site may purchase package extensions, one day for $24.95 or three days for $39.95.

1-DAY & 14-DAY PACKAGES – ONLINE EXCLUSIVE: Universal Photo Connect has now made available a 1-day and 14-day version of the Star Card Package, but – and this is a big “but” – the 1-day and 14-day options are only available online as a pre-order, not in the parks. To check out pricing and place your order, visit the pre-sale site.

ANNUAL PASSHOLDERS: You can also purchase a Star Card Package in-park for $99.95 plus tax, but it is good all year. Please note that this price nearly doubled in August 2014 to the current $99.95, but it’s still a good value. Annual Passholders can also use the pre-sale site to get a discount.

PRINTS-ONLY VERSION: Discontinued.

WET ‘N WILD ADD-ON: If you purchase the Star Card Package for your Universal Orlando visit, and you are also planning to visit Wet ‘n Wild, then you can purchase an add-on option for $20.00 that lets you add unlimited photos from Wet ‘n Wild onto your account. This add-on option isn’t advertised, so you’ll need to ask for it when you arrive at Wet ‘n Wild. (You can also purchase a photo package at Wet ‘n Wild as a standalone item, but we won’t get into those details here.)

Universal Photo Connect online
For guests who are using the Star Card Package, the online portion of the Universal Photo Connect service is fairly straightforward. All you have to do is visit UniversalPhotoConnect.com. The URL is also found on the back of your Star Card, and you will receive an email at the address you provide when you purchase the Star Card Package in the park.

Once you register on the site with your email address, you can access your photos by entering the code on the back of your Star Card. From that point on any photos added to your card will go directly into your online account. That being said, we recommend that you stop by a Photo Connect Store on your way out of the park each day you’re visiting. You just want to make sure all of your photos have been properly edited and placed in your account.

In addition to viewing and downloading standard prints, the Star Card Package also allows you to order a large variety of products from the website when you return home.

Posted Image
UniversalPhotoConnect.com.

Finally, there is an app available for iPhone and Android that will allow you to view and share your photos using your mobile phone. Keep in mind that full use of the app requires that you already have your Star Card online account set up, which you need to do on the desktop website.

Universal Photo Connect – important reminders
Before we discuss ride photos at Universal Orlando, let’s review several key points to consider when working with the Universal Photo Connect service:
1) There are less photographers available around the Universal Orlando parks than you may have seen at Disney World. You usually will find a Universal photographer at the front of each park and at the major character meet-and-greets (like Transformers, the Simpsons, and Shrek)…

Posted Image
Krusty the Clown & Sideshow Bob near The Simpsons Ride.

But photographers are not at every meet-and-greet, and they usually are not spread around the park in scenic locations like Disney is well known for doing. So if you want lots of photos to remember your trip, you definitely need to bring your own camera. Think of the Universal Photo Connect service as a supplement to the pictures you’ll be taking and as a way to get ride photos.

2) If you want to be able to view your photos online, you must purchase the Star Card Package. In the old system, purchasing any photo print would make all of your photos available online. This is no longer the case.

3) Only the 3-day and Annual Passholder Star Card Packages are offered on-site at Universal Orlando. If you’re interested in the 1-day or 14-day option, you must pre-purchase the package online.

4) Once you purchase and activate your Star Card Package, all photos added to your Star Card should be automatically uploaded to your online account. Nevertheless, we still recommend that you stop by a Universal Connect Store at the end of each day you’re visiting just to make sure everything is where you want it to be.

5) If you don’t purchase the Star Card Package, you must view and purchase prints the same day your photos are taken. Without the Star Card Package, any photos you have on your temporary Star Card are forfeited at day’s end.

That’s a lot of stuff to remember, isn’t it? Don’t worry – this guide isn’t going anywhere. Just be sure to bookmark it and come back once or twice more before your trip to review the details.

Now that we’ve covered Universal Photo Connect, we’ll talk about ride photos on next! Continue to page 2

Once a photo has been added to your online account, you have unlimited access to view/download it forever.

The service is very popular, and we consider it one of the best values in Orlando's theme parks.  The feedback I get about it is overwhemlingly positive.  My recommendation:  try it for sure! Just remember that you still want to bring your own camera to the parks because Universal doesn't have too many photographers stationed around, other than at the big character meet-and-greets.

MASTER FAQ INDEX

What are the current benefits to purchasing a Star Card package?

These are the current benefits:

  • Unlimited access to digital copies of all your in-park and ride photos.
  • Photo Connect lanyard and Star Card.
  • One 4×6 and one 5×7 photo print at the time of purchase or redemption.
  • Smartphone Connectivity with the Amazing Pictures app.
  • Exclusive pricing on park photo prints – as low as $1.99 per print.

Please note these inclusions are always subject to change.

Can I buy the Photo Connect Star Card Package from the UK?

Yes.  When you make the purchase on the pre-sale site, you'll receive a voucher via email, which you'll then exchange for your actual Star Card Package when you arrive at the park.

I'll be visiting Universal Orlando several times over my 14-day stay.  Can this be used across all 14 days?

If you purchase the 14-day package on the pre-sale site, yes, you can use it as often (or as little) as you'd like during the 14 consecutive days the package is activated; it doesn't matter how many times you actually enter or exit the parks.

Are there any Photo Connect stores outside of the theme parks?

Yes, there is now a Photo Connect store in the transportation hub near the security checkpoint. This is the hub most guests walk through from the parking ramps to CityWalk.

Are there any photographers outside of the parks?

Yes. Usually -- and especially in the morning -- there will be a photographer at the Islands of Adventure lighthouse and the Universal globe both. The likelihood that they will be there really depends on how busy the parks are when you visit.

Does the package include the hard copies in the little frames that you can get after the rides?

As of right now, two photo prints are included with the package (subject to change), but frames are extra.  Unless you just mean the paper frame that's more like a folder for protecting the photo -- that's included with the print.

In the star card details, it says you get unlimited downloads of your pictures -- but what does that mean?  Can I download them to my iPad, or print the pictures off?

It means you have access to the photos saved to your online account indefinitely, so you can view/download/print them yourself as much as you'd like, forever.

Yes, you can download to your iPad or anywhere else that has online access.

Yes, you may print your pictures, once downloaded, as much as you'd like.  They're not watermarked or anything.

Your last question is the only one I'm not sure about. I'd give Amazing Pictures (the company that handles Universal's photos) a call and ask: 1-800-368-6386. But, remember, if you get the prints-only version, you don't get online access to view/download your photos after you leave the parks.

Can I purchase the package online early?

Yes -- there is no expiration on the voucher, so you can buy it as far in advance as you'd like.  Just in case there is a policy or package change, however, I wouldn't recommend buying it more than, say, six months in advance.

I don't want to waste valuable time at park opening getting the Star Card set up.  What should I do?

When you first enter the park, if you get your photo taken by a Universal photographer, you'll be given a temporary Star Card.  You can use that temporary card really as long as you'd like your first day.  But at some point, probably the first time you get a ride photo, you'll want to get your Star Card package set up -- then they'll merge the photos on your temporary card with your new Star Card account.

Can the 14-day option only be purchased online in advance?

That's correct as of right now, though I imagine, down the road, all options will be sold at the parks.

What happens if I buy the package in advance and Universal ends up changing something?  Can I "exchange" it for the new package?

I imagine they'd give you a fair credit for your purchase, but it really is impossible to predict how they might change it and what they'd do for folks who had already made a purchase.

But I wouldn't worry too much about this.  Bottom line is if you use it to its full potential, the Photo Connect Star Card packages are an incredible value, and I don't see that changing even if they make some minor tweaks to the benefits, price, etc. :)

I'm an international traveler.  Do I pick up my Star Card at my (on-site) hotel or in the parks?

You can redeem your pre-sale at any Photo Connect location, although there aren't currently any in the hotels.  It is recommended that you stop by the CityWalk hub location before heading into the park because it will be less busy.

We're using child swap but still want to have all four of us in the same ride picture.  Can the Team Members Photoshop us all into the same pic?

I wouldn't expect this.  What the Team Members do is add backgrounds to bluescreens, frames around the edges, and clip art -- in other words, fairly basic editing.  They don't actually change anything in the "photo" part of the photo, if that makes sense, like adding guests, changing expressions, whitening teeth, etc., etc.

It's a cool idea, but just a bit beyond their services.

If I were to redeem my pre-sale voucher at CityWalk, can I still get my free prints at Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey?

Yes, you can.  Universal currently offers a free 5x7 and a free 4x6 with the Photo Connect Star card.  However, at Forbidden Journey, you can choose to get an 8x10 for free, as they do not currently offer 5x7 or 4x6 prints there.

I arrive on a Saturday but won't hit the parks until Sunday.  Can I still activate my package at CityWalk that day?

Yes, you can redeem your pre-order at the new CityWalk location in the transportation hub.  All you need is the email that you used to pre-order the Star Card.

What are the QR scan thingies?  Do you scan them with the Star Card app or with something else?

The Amazing Pictures app.  Doing so will unlock exclusive borders for you to use on your own pictures -- and you can have these printed off as a 4x6 at any Photo Connect location for $1.99.

I will be at the parks for two non-consecutive days.  Can I purchase the one-day package online, use that on my first day, and then, when I come back a few days later, purchase the three-day extension for only $24.95?

Yes, this is true.  You can pre-order the one-day Star Card online, and then extend your Star Card for three more consecutive days at any time for only $24.95.  Remember, these prices may change at anytime, but, for now, this is a huge deal for the extension.

How much does it cost to purchase individual photos at the end of the day if I don't purchase the Star Card package?

The in-park prints range from $19.95 to $39.95, depending upon size and location.

If you are a member of the Photo Connect Star Card, you can get discounted prints in the park:  4x6 prints for $1.99, 5x7 prints for $5.00, and 8x10 prints for $10.00.

How late is the new CityWalk transportation hub location open?

Hours vary, but, as of right now, it's currently open one to two hours after the parks close.

Can I adjust any photo from the parks at the CityWalk hub location?

You can view and adjust any Photo Connect photo at this location except for Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey and Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit.

I read somewhere that there was some type of deal where you can get unlimited print for a one-time $25 fee.  Is this true?

It was, but it's no longer being offered.  The current deal is 4x6 prints for $1.99 for Star Card members.

If you buy the one-day package, can you still take advantage of the in-park prints at the discounted price?

All the packages have the same benefits (discounts on prints, etc.).  The only difference between the packages is the length of days you can add photos to your account while visiting the parks.

That's a long way of saying yes, if you have the one-day package, you will be able to get discounted photo prints for that one day.

Are there photographers at the on-site deluxe hotels for either their character breakfasts or evening character visits?

No.  The only time photographers are present at the hotels is for the Grinch character breakfast during the holidays.

I already have a personalized card for my current annual pass Star Card account, but I will be purchasing another one.  Will I be able to link the old one to the new package?

Yes.  Just let the Photo Connect Team Member know, and he will make sure they connect it to your current account.  You can also get more of the personalized ID cards at Jurassic Park or Men in Black for only $5.00.

As a part of a family of two, I believe the photoconnect to be a great value because otherwise I wouldn't be in any of my vacation photos. UOR should add more photographers throughout the park though, it's hard to find them sometimes and I can only have so many pics with the T-Rex in the background!

Any word of photo ops in Diagon Alley other than the "fambus" broom photo and Gringotts on ride photo?

I agree LucyK! They definitely need more photographs. I personally think PhotoConnect is an outstanding value considering once your photos are in your account you can access them indefinitely. At WDW your access is only for a limited time after spending a large amount of money. This is definitely the best value for this service out of all of the theme parks.

Not a huge deal, but there is a small flaw in the whole system that does pop up every now and then... If a photo is added to your card that isn't yours and you want it removed, you have to call the support number. The in-park Colorvision staff is unable to remove added pictures on your Star Card.

I am looking at doing this on this next trip. When we were there 4 years ago I never saw a photographer from the parks so I hope since I am paying for these we will see more photographers
They are starting to add more people to the staff. The problem is the photos are run by a third party color vision. If nothing else it is worth it for the ride photos.

Hi Guys

Looking for a little help and information. I was reading an article on this site regards the Photo Connect at Universal and I had a couple of questions I hoped someone could help me with please.

We don’t travel to Orlando until the end of September 2014 from the UK. We would like to buy the Photo connect 14day Package.

1.       Can we buy this online from the UK?

2.       We will be visiting Universal & Islands OA several times over our 14 day stay, can this be used for all the visit over the 14days?

Thanks you for your help and advice in advance.

I'm not 100%, but I believe the answer to 1 is yes.

The answer to 2 is also yes.

Excellent. I was wondering about this too.

I live in South America and had no trouble buying the photoConnect, got the voucher on the email within minutes of my purchase.

I bought the Star Card package for 3 days online (got $10 off). Are there any photo connect stores outside the gates? Would love to get the package activated before we go in. Also, is there a photographer outside the gate to take pictures?

We've bought the package & are looking forward to using it.

I have read somewhere (Cant recall where) that there is also an option to have all your photo's printed off at a Kiosk for a flat fee of $25.

Can anyone confirm this?

 Lucy,

In addition to getting Photo Connect and bringing your own camera my advice is to not shy away from asking fellow vacationers to take a picture of your family. I can't tell you how many times I've been approached by people at both Universal and Disney asking me to take a photo, and I have gladly snapped a picture every time. In most cases, they reciprocate and everyone gets a good photo. Selfishly, it makes me feel good to do something even so small to help make someone's vacation better. And I'm just paying forward what other nice people have done for me and my family during our trips.

I have this crazy 'I don't want to bother other people on vacation' thing going. I have no problem offering to take their pictures but when it comes to ask someone to take mine I feel so shy I end up not asking, it's silly, I know that and I'll try to remember your words when I'm at the park.

There is not photo connect locations outside the gates.

Usually, and especially in the morning, there will be a photographer at the Islands of Adventure lighthouse and the Universal globe outside of each park's respective gate.

Purchased PhotoConnect last time and my only regret is not doing it sooner! We had so much fun with it! Like some have mentioned above, it is so nice having photos with everyone in your party included. It was also nice not trying to "avoid" the photographers as we often do lol This time we were excited to see them and get as many photos as we could.

Really love The Simpsons couch photo op, as well as E.T, and the Transformers. Also, it's great for the on ride photos as well.

The main reason I had gotten interested in purchasing a PhotoConnect was because I knew we were going to be on a Mardi Gras float and wouldn't be able to get any photos on my own. I know they always have park photographers there taking pics of the people on the floats, so that is what peaked my interest. Before that, I didn't know how much was included with it, such a great and fun value! With PhotoConnect we were able to get 10 photos from the parade.

I should mention I encountered two "glitches". The photo we had taken outside of Universal, near the globe, never got added to my account and my on ride Forbidden Journey photo didn't either. For Forbidden Journey myself and a friend had ridden single riders, so we were on different cars. His photo got added to the account, and even though the photo person said both of our photos would be on there, only his was. Bit of a bummer, especially the Forbidden Journey photo, but I am still beyond happy about the product!

The photo connect star card is up there in one of the best purchases I've ever made. The price is so reasonable especially if you are an annual pass holder. My boyfriend and I would just go on rides over and over again and pose for the camera in a million different ways. We got some amazing pictures and access to all of them immediately on my phone the second we left the photo station.

Agent J agree with you 100% (especially about not avoiding the photographers). We also liked the service the workers would provide like when I had my eyes closed on the MIB photo, no problem they added sunglasses as well as themed borders, lasers, lights etc. And you have a copy of all photos available to download whether they were photoshopped or not.

The immediacy of receiving the digital images is great as well if you're interested in updating your friends and family on social media as to how the trip is going. Those ride photos speak louder than a thousand words. Slap one of them up on Facebook and watch the jealously ooze from your friends and family.

 PWT,

I received mine pretty quickly although I can't say I checked immediately following a ride (as I'm not married to my phone). But when we took a break and sat down in the park, they were there. Every day I would do a Facebook recap for the people back home and I had all my photos from that day to use if I would like.
