TWISTER... Ride It Out at Universal Studios Florida

OI Center

Posted Image
Twister... Ride It Out at Universal Studios Florida.

Location
New York.

Restrictions and access
None; has Express Pass access.

Two sentence insider summary
Based on the 1996 movie starring Bill Paxton and Helen Hunt, this indoor, walk-through attraction allows you to experience the creation of a real-life tornado right before your very eyes and ears.

Fear factor
4 out of 5. High rating because the tornado sequence is very loud.

Wait times
If you ever see a wait time longer than 10 minutes, call me.

What you wish you knew before you experienced it
The end sequence demonstrates what happens when a tornado strikes the small town of Wakita, Oklahoma. Like T2, there is a boom at the end!

OI fun fact
Bill Paxton and Helen Hunt refused to be in the same room when the video was being filmed for this attraction (who knows what they were fighting about). If you pay attention you will notice that they are never in the same camera shot.

I read about Jimmy Fallon deal as a replacement.  Having no clue what that would entail, leaves me very not enthused.  Although anything done well will be just fine.  Anyone clamoring for Jimmy Fallon, I'm not sure.  Realistically what could be there or like to be there.  The end deal for Twister was good, it was the painful everything else.  Maybe a nice special effects fully interactive attraction somehow really putting you in the middle of the action.

Something to keep in mind when discussing replacements for Twister: The attraction is completely surrounded. Even rebuilding the same sized building would be a mess, due to Rip Ride Rockit. When Universal was deciding what to replace it with, this was a huge consideration.

Definitely something you notice its entrenched and can't spread out.  So if you figure they just gut the innards, knock the walls down, and make an empty space.  Something like a stage, seating sounds doable and budget friendly.  Or, how about since USH closed House of Horrors, just appease the masses and give us a year round House of Horrors  as the replacement.  Then it can be used at HHN expansion during that time of year.

Now there's an idea I can get behind! House of Horrors was my favorite attraction at USH. So much fun.

Sadly, I don't think it attracts enough guests or sells enough merch to make it past the drawing board..

The potenially cheapest option is not a ride per say, but the building could become a Universal museum? Is there actually any rumour as to what may replace it or just closing speculation?

It would be nice it whatever replaces it is something I can actually enjoy. Something not too loud or scary would be right up my alley, but I know I am in the minority on this.

A classic monsters area would be cool since I heard a rumor that they might be closing down the Classic Monsters Café.

Wasn't it mentioned that a museum might be going into the Gardens of Allah?

I'm not sure there is enough room for that.

Well, USF is all movies. What about a similar attraction, something a bit more modern? Any big disaster movies that are Universal owned? Day After Tomorrow, Cloverfield, War of the Worlds, etc?

I'd be sad to see it go.  I know I'm in the minority but I still like it.  But whatever they replace it with the air conditioning will be still be nice.  I don't understand why Disaster and T2 won't be replaced first.

Terminator has new content coming.

Disaster has a huge capacity, and it's replacement is probably a bit bigger than what they want for '15.

By new content, do you mean they are going to update it?

No, I meant the franchise is having new content.

I'm hoping for a good Dark ride. That building looks too big for a Museum even if it means less of a gift shop than a typical dark ride. Something like the Fast and Furious attraction that's coming USH next year.

Alas. That would be a great attraction, imo. Then they could retire that god awful just so so bad Sindbad show to have a newer, more modern stunt show.

T2 also has a large capacity and puts though a lot more people then you would think. And has one of the coolest stors in the park for its dump.
While I have no first hand sources saying anything about a Jimmy replacement, it would not shock me. He is HOT right now, and it would be very easy to do in a short period of time in the current space and even layout they have.

In the States maybe, but I dont think most international guests would be interested in anything Fallon.

Totally agree, it was only when he did the "live from Universal" I even noticed it's on TV over here.

And at that, it's on at stupid O'Clock on the CNBC news channel (which nobody watches).

It sounds like they just want a replacement "thing" which is good, but I can't see Fallon pulling in any Non-US visitors :)

Agree with these comments, I don't see it catering much to the international tourists at all. Now the haunted house would be amazing.

I love Jimmy Fallon, but I have to agree with you here, Lainie. He's not well-known anywhere else and a big bulk of guests do come from outside the US. That's a big gap in the clientele. Not to mention, are kids even aware of who Jimmy Fallon is? My students are but they're teens. They wouldn't go see a Jimmy Fallon attraction while at Universal. Especially with RRR behind it!

Yet another reason you and Marty2010 need to move to the USA - so you can embrace some American cultural icons...  :)

I have no idea who Jimmy Fallon is...I've heard of him, but I couldn't point him out in a lineup. All these late night TV personalities blend into one IMO.

Twister does show its age, I'm surprised the video footage is still holding up but the ending was good. I'd like something similar, an effects type presentation. Something interactive using explosions and SFX would be great.
